Rebirth was fine mechanically but the story has been raped so hard I have no interest at all in how it ends.

Sephiroth has figured out that he can escape defeat in the main timeline by changing events in others. Ultimately he still needs to hijack the lifestream to combine all timelines into one so he can rule over everything as a god. As of Rebirth, it seems Aerith is aware, and somehow pulls Cloud into another timeline to give him a white materia because the one in the Remake timeline was used up trying to stop Sephiroth from raping Cloud near the end of the first game.For what it's worth, Rebirth actually does a great job of explaining the Gi and how they were responsible for the creation of the black materia.
