What's the oldest RPG you've actually beaten?
>>
Wasteland I think? It came for free with Wasteland 2 on steam so I did a playthrough.
>>
>>4001792
I have gone through series like Ultima, Wizardry, Bard's tale etc for the sake of trying out everything.
The oldest one I played at the time it actually released was Eye of the Beholder 2 with my brother
>>
>>4001792
I beat the first Wizardry but it was the PS1 port. If it doesn't count because of that, then the first Final Fantasy on NES.
>>
>>4001792
Sword Quest for DOS?
or the DBZ Cards RPG for Famicom. (Dragon Ball Z: Kyōshū! Saiyajin (1990))

ok SaGa 1 was older.
https://www.mobygames.com/game/5936/the-final-fantasy-legend/

and Sword of Hopey Changiness.
https://www.mobygames.com/game/19538/the-sword-of-hope/

if adapted app for gamebooks count then... 1984.

>>
Rather than the oldest, which would be Leygref's Castle, though I don't know if it even qualifies as an RPG, the oldest game I consider actually good that I've beaten is Pool of Radiance.
>>
>>4001819
trivia: Sword of Hope's dev is still publishing RPGs as of 2025.

Just beat Akalabeth from '79. It was made by a teenager as a hobby project, so it's pretty barebones. But by God I beat a Balrog to death with my bare hands.
>>
OG Famicon DQ.
If Adventure counts, then that. I've played a lot of Ultima 4, but haven't beaten it.
>>
>>4001792
Phantasy Star I on the master system, played it last year, enjoyed it more than I thought I would
>>
Beneath apple manor, a decent roguelike for the apple ii.
>>
>>4001933
how can it be like rogue when it predates rogue? :P
>>
>>4001792
Actually finished? Final Fantasy 6 and Fallout, which released in 94 and 97
>>
>>4001960
Roguelike as in the roguelike genre. Not like "rogue the game".
>>
>>4001792
Probably the original Final Fantasy. I'd say Dragon Quest 1, but I've only beat the Game Boy Color version.

I've tried Wizardry and stuff, but never got far. I've also ascended in Nethack, which is older than Final Fantasy, but it's been updated so much over the years that it's not the same as playing the original version.
>>
>>4001792
probably Dungeon Master 1?
Give how it came out on December 15, 1987.
It was ahead of time as fuck though, so it's almost as if doesn't count, functionally it's more like a 1991-2 dungeon crawler.
>>
Played? Probably Wasteland on DOS
Finished? Probably FF1 on NES
>>
>>4001792
Akalabeth by Lord British. Someone made a J2ME port, so I've spent a shitton of time grinding it out on my Samsung.
>>
>>4001792
dragon quest
probably the only ancient game i ever could play because it is baby simple, doesn't really feel like a game from 1986
>>
>>4001985
apple-like
>>

?????

probably og pool of radiance

Related comes to mind. Quest for Glory 1 EGA if you're counting that as rpg too I guess.
>>
>>4001792
For the nes ff1 multiple times with different character types. Ultima and dragon warrior I got near the end but havnt finished. I didnt really like having to repair my weapons in ultima and on dw I just got distratcted and when i went to play again I had no idea what the last objective was.

Some of these old games are grindy but they are such a vibe. Feels like going back into some ancient time. I beat some of the final fantasy games for gameboy as well. One was surprisingly a lot like playing zelda with tools like a hookshot. The other let you morph into different monsters by absorbing the ones you beat. Must have been the precursor to saga frontier with Rici? I think it was.I played some mud style old ones as wellbut cant remember the names.

Depending on how ports are counted, either Wizardry or Dragon Warrior/Quest.
>>
wizardry proving grounds and ultima ii
>>
>>4001792
I don't think Pixel Remaster FF1 counts so it's Fallout

Any CRPG prior to that is just too archaic for me. I've tried Ultima, Might and Magic & Dark Sun and In the end, I just end up filtered.

>Any CRPG prior to that is just too archaic for me. I've tried Ultima, Might and Magic & Dark Sun and In the end, I just end up filtered.
The PC speaker is the great filter.
>>
>>4003695
Dark Sun has a great MIDI soundtrack, can't be that. It's probably graffix.
>>
>>4003699
>Dark Sun has a great MIDI soundtrack, can't be that. It's probably graffix.
I was thinking about how, even though I grew up playing DOS era early 90s games, by the mid-late 90s, when I went back and tried to play shit like Wasteland, I got filtered and just couldn't do it.
I think clunky interfaces is a big part of it, moreso than graphics, personally. Speaking in general, I haven't played Dark Sun specifically.
>>
>>4003699
Graphics is what drew me to it. It's been a while since I tried it out, don't exactly remember what turned me off but it definitely wasn't the graphics.
>>
>>4003705
Dark Sun is almost entirely mouse-driven, the UI was a big inspiration for BG1, so it can't be that.
>>4003706
Might just not have jived with the beginning, where you are enslaved.

Same but I played the C64 port. But I played it in like 1990 or so, after having played the Ultima 3 port on NES.
>>
>>4003699
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought basically nobody that played these games when they were new had a Roland midi setup. They had cheap adlib/soundblaster cards or nothing. Middle class and even lower middle class kids with hand me down office 486s and Pentium 1s.
>>
>>4008422
Yeah, I remember the PC speaker giving way to the soundblaster era. I don’t know anyone who had a Roland setup like that. I had never even heard one before, before watching a video and was blown away by how good it was.
>>
>>4008431
AFAIK they basically left midi as an option because the musicians they hired that didn't know shit about programming would make the roland mt-32 soundtrack with legit samples, then the nerds would come in and try to downgrade that to soundblaster. And the game reviewers DID have midi setups and would jerk a game off for it, and they would have midi setups in the Babbages at the mall they'd use to demo games.
>>
>>4008436
>the nerds would come in and try to downgrade that to soundblaster.
ACKSUACCLLY FM Synthesis can in theory create ANY sound including the MIDI samples used in MT32. just that most game devs don't have the budget to hire IQ 200 sound engineers to do it.
>>
>>4008547
Just use an infinite number of Fourier series, bro

Me too.

In an era where most games I pick up I just wind up dropping midway through, PS1 actually managed to hold my interest long enough to make it through the whole thing. Sadly, all future PS titles did nothing for me.

As far as the thread question goes, probably Final Fantasy 1.

Ultima Underworld

and it was awesome
>>
>>4010619
I consider PSIV the best one in the series, and I love the FM bass (ontopic ITT!) in the intro:

>>
>>4001793
Still have my original disks for it. It's been on every computer I've owned since it was ported to PC.

Oldest I've beaten was King's Quest 1.
Played a few older text adventures like Zork but never beat them.
>>
hack, but it was the nds port in the early 2010s so im not sure if anything significant was changed
>>
Probably FFIV.
Everything that I have tried from the 80's hasn't clicked with me.
>>
>>4001792
Zork 2
>>
Dragon Quest 1, Final Fantasy 1, and I nearly beat Phantasy Star 1, but it sucked so hard that when I checked GameFAQS for how much more I had left, which was like a dungeon or two, I just put it down. I wasn't about to grind out money to buy a third vehicle and then aimlessly wander around.
>>
>>4003695
>>4003699
Its everything. Controls, UI, graphics, and sound.
>>
>>4001933
Nice.
For me it was EAMON on a Franklin computer. Not sure you can 'beat' that game though.
The first one I actually finished was the original Bard's Tale
>>
>>4001792
That pre ultima game alakazam or wtf it was called. When it was new and sold in a sandwich bag- living in Houston during that era had benefits.

I’ve gone through every major crpg store from the 80s and 90s.
>>
Wizardry and Dragon Quest 1 I've only played ports and remakes of, so it'd be Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei, which came out a couple months before FF1.
>>
>>4001792
Perihelion on amiga. I've played some ultimas and goldbox games but never finished them.
>>
>>4001792

The GBA port of Crystalis
