What's the best game for being an alchemist? I've thought about trying out one of the Atelier games, but I really don't like girly anime stuff (although I'd be willing to make an exception if the gameplay is good). I'd rather play as a wizened old wizard. Wanting something where the focus is on alchemy rather than the alchemy being a side mechanic.
Morrowind.Comedy option: KC:D
>>4002816I guess there is an alchemy system in ADOM, and it's probably best meddled with as a Wizard. Wrath Of The Righteous has a reasonably robust potion-brewing system, including a powerful Alchemist class, you can brew potions as any spellcaster if you want to... Kingmaker has a good item crafting mod for it, which obviously can be used to make potions. BG2 has HLAs for making potions but the mods to revamp / expand them are probably mandatory for your fantasy. Pillars Of Eternity 1 & 2 both have robust crafting systems for making drugs, potions and explosives. Dragon's Dogma 1 & 2 can involve making medicinals and draughts in an herbalistic / alchemical manner, and you can customize your character to be as wizened and old as you like, including something basically no other game has: you can customize your *posture* and *walking gait* to actually move like an old man, too.
>>4002816I wish more games had alchemy. I like physically brewing potions in Kingdom Come, but I like how potions work in The Witcher. Those two systems need to get married and produce a baby. .
>>4002879ADOM alchemy is trash unless they fixed it later. I never, ever learned a recipe worth knowing.
>>4002816>something where the focus is on alchemy rather than the alchemy being a side mechanicYou aren't going to find many RPGs where the focus is on crafting potions, like that isn't even fun. Like Darklands has alchemy, but it isn't a "focus".
Kamidori Alchemy Meister :^)
>>4002901It gives you access to some of the most useful potions (extra healing, gain attributes, booze, and to a lesser extent blindness and cure poison), as well as on-demand fireballs that can be used without needing PP or any spellcasting ability at all. Sure, it's possible to get fucked over with bad RNG recipes but it's vanishingly unlikely that all of your recipes will be useless. It's one of the most useful skills in the game, used correctly.
>>4002816>I really don't like girly anime stuffi like anime grills and i am het.
>>4002879>you can customize your *posture* and *walking gait* to actually move like an old man, too.I'm going to have to give Dragon's Dogma another chance.>>4003035That's cool, I guess. Anime chicks all look like they have down syndrome to me.>>4002995There are the Atelier games (and maybe Rune Factory), but like I said in the OP, I haven't played them and they're kind of out of my wheelhouse.
>>4003036>. Anime chicks all look like they have down syndrome to me.grills are best when they're almost retarded meme.
>>4002816Atelier is what you want but it has to be a good one. Or Mana Khemia which is a spinoff. You should watch a video on them but it's either that or Morrowind and if you get Morrowind you'll have to mod it so it's good. There's this one mod that lets you throw potions as throwing weapons and another that lets you use them as mine-traps. Amongst other things
>>4002897Both are pretty barebones. I would know I played a green witcher only.
Return to Krondor
>>4003160Which Ateliers are the good ones? Are any of them challenging from the get-go? JRPGs tend to lose me because a lot of them have frequent very easy battles in the beginning.
>>4003620>any of them challenging from the get-go?HIGH IMPACT SEXUAL VIOLENCE Atelier Totori supposedly need a walkthrough if you wanna get all the ending in a decent time. the Arland trilogy all got time limits IIRC.
>>4002897The potions in KCD suck ass, but the potions in Witcher 1 were awesome. You're basically doing steroids and they last for 30 minutes. As you learn more recipes, you become increasingly overpowered. My ideal game would start you off as a normal human, but you become a force of destruction so as long as you have potions coursing through your veins.
I’m playing my first ps3 era atelier rn and I can feel it feminizing my brain by the hour. It’s great :3
>>4005541>feminizing my brainNo such thing. That's why trannies beat women in chess.
>>4002816Try Elder Scrolls 1, the excellent custom magic system is close to that
>>4002816I fucking love alchemy in Skyrim. The "minigame" of discovering all possible effects was fun, and then figuring out the best combos. Such a perfect system.
>>4003696>My ideal game would start you off as a normal human, but you become a force of destruction so as long as you have potions coursing through your veins.literally any "buff" character in an RPG
>>4005583>start you off as a normal human, but you become a force of destruction so as long as you have potions coursing through your veins.
>>4005594>go to bar>order sujamma>become over poweredCool alchemy system, boomer. Totally not a shitty game.
>>4005610>Totally not a shitty game.This but unironically
>>4005610>gets oneshot by any random Nord with a warhammerBetter luck next time, n'wah
I played Atelier Ryza and enjoyed it for the alchemy alone - it's an actual system where the same base item can have different properties and crafted components especially.Working backwards from the item I want to craft and crafting all the components with specific properties was a lot of fun.The combat isn't good but it's serviceable.I tried the sequel though and I could beat every single non-boss encounter with a single item use that I didn't even put particular effort into
>>4003036They're similar to each other in a lot of ways, but there are definitely ways in which they're distinct. I think you might want to start with DD2 unless you like a more austere, dated feeling. They both have the posture / gait thing for character creation, and their item crafting is very similar, it's the world content that's different. DD2 is a fully completed and polished game. DD1 ... is charming, but relatively empty.
>>4005610You realize that Boomers never got into gaming, anon? They were in their forties by the time Morrowind came out, and very famously they never entered gaming culture in any statistically relevant numbers. Morrowind is a Millennial thing, maybe a few of the youngest GenX. Those are the Boomers' children, just so ya know.
>>4003006I thought "gain attributes" was the one recipe guaranteed to be available, and it's unlocked with max skill or whatever? Like, you *always* get that recipe, regardless of whatever else is generated on that run. And it's generally considered the most important and valuable thing in the game, to the extent that it's often deemed game-breaking cheese by the community.
>>4003005Unironically a very good game.>>4002816Ascend From Nine Mountains has a very robust crafting system.
>>4003696>Add an option to just buy (with a markup) potions, but in exchange you'll be dealing with this motherfuck.
>>4005782>You realize that Boomers never got into gaming, anon? They were in their forties by the time Morrowind came out, and very famously they never entered gaming culture in any statistically relevant numbers.Millennials got into PC gaming because their boomer dad had a PC in the house, dingus.>t. played Morrowind with my dad
>>4005780How much content reuse is in Ryza 2? I’m hesitant to play it when there’s 20 other ateliers that have no risk of that
>>4005845Your personal anecdote is irrelevant. Idiot.
>>4006021No my childhood was the same way. Dad had Diablo 1 and other 90s games
>>4006021>Your personal anecdote is irrelevant. Idiot.Who do you think kept the cRPG industry alive through the 80s and 90s? Boomer dads, moron. Who had money to buy PCs? Boomer dads with jobs. Did you think that the industry sprang into existence in 2002, fully formed? Where do you think the term “dadgamer” came from?
>>4006035>>4005845millenynells dun exist.anyway, my boomer dad hates vidya. my mom play causals though.as for introduction, my youngest Gen X uncle bought an IBM clone back in the day. i too am Gen X.yes boomer made the earliest RPGs and stuff. but i never met a single hardcore boomer gamer .or community. not online . not IRL. bored moms playing XXXX variant of "puzzle blocks' don't count.
>>4006055Gaming wasn't mainstream among boomers. Boomer gamers would have mostly been people who were computer nerds. If you didn't fit into that niche, you probably didn't play games. My parents don't and never did; pretty much none of their friends/family from that generation did either. But none of these people read fantasy novels, watched Star Trek, played wargames/tabletop RPGs, or had any tech- or science-related hobbies that would have made computer games relevant to them. If you weren't in that sphere, games were basically considered kid stuff.Meanwhile, just about everyone in my generation and below has played at least some games, even if it's just FIFA or Tony Hawk or Halo.
>>4006159My grandpa is 80+ years old and he was addicted to Age of Empires in 1997
>>4006159>Boomer gamers would have mostly been people who were computer nerds.Correct.>Meanwhile, just about everyone in my generation and below has played at least some games, even if it's just FIFA or Tony Hawk or Halo.Gaming used to be a fringe nerd hobby, just like the tabletop games and fantasy novels you mentioned. It’s true that those things became more common and popular among younger generations, but “[hobby] was more niche at the time and only popular with nerds in [generation]” and “[generation] famously never got into [hobby]” which is the claim that started this reply chain. If it weren’t for those nerds, none of those hobbies would’ve been carried on down to the younger generations to get into in the first place.
>>4006324*are fundamentally different statements
>>4005783The potions you gain recipes for are always the same, it's only the order which is randomized - you're correct that Gain Attributes is always last (skill level 100), Assassins get the recipe for Poison first, everything else is random. But the reagent potions required for each recipe are semi-random and will change every game; every potion has a rarity from 'common' to 'very rare' and the recipe for Gain Attributes always requires two of the rarest potions. So one character your recipe might be Potions of Youth + Potions of Longevity (both of which can themselves be made through Alchemy), which means in the course of a game you might get 20 or 30 Gain Attributes - incredibly good. The next game the recipe might be Potions of Cure Corruption + Potions of Ultra Healing, either of which are vary rare and extremely useful, so you might only get a few Gain Attributes out of it.Either way it's still a very, very good skill, I'd rate it as one of the best in the game.I don't think it's considered game-breaking in and of itself, for various reasons. Certain characters (specifically potion merchants) can do an absolutely insane amount of scumming to max out their stats at level 1, but that's hardly normal gameplay.
>>4002866The alchemy system in KCD really does make you feel like you're doing real ass alchemy, not just picking items from a list and crafting potions.
>>4013126
>>4002816If you decide to try Atelier I can vouch for Atelier Sophie, the games all handle the alchemy aspect in different ways, and Sophie handles it in a sort of tetris puzzle fashion.>>4003006ADOM character holding two potions of water: "I'M GONNA DO IT! I'LL BLOW THIS PLACE SKY HIGH!!"
https://wiki.kingdomofloathing.com/Pastamastery .https://wiki.kingdomofloathing.com/Cocktailcrafting .i forgot Kingdom of Loathing has lots of crafting. crafting(mostly ramen and drinks) is needed to beat the main quest in a decent amount of time.https://wiki.kingdomofloathing.com/Advanced_Saucecraftingi guess sauce crafting is the real "alchemy" in this game, but it works best with ramen crafting which is already powerful by itself.
>>4006510>Certain characters (specifically potion merchants) can do an absolutely insane amount of scumming to max out their stats at level 1, but that's hardly normal gameplay.Tell me more of this
>>4002816Morrowind if you want godly steroids Oblivion if you want a poisoner who can rapidly restore health and manaKingmaker if you want a bomberman
