I think original DeS is absolutely worth playing for its historical relevance and weird experimental design but it's also probably the single most overrated game in the series.

It's a trial and error game for people with depleted self worth. When the player eventually overcomes the obstacles the game puts up, it simulates a sense of accomplishment and makes the fan believe they have some sort of value as a person. It's a very clever set up IMO.

The remaster just kinda came and went, okay cool graphics this is sick, but wait the game is clunky af and the bosses are babby tier and the PVP is all kinds of unbalanced and retarded, and that was that

It was the first souls game for most people. I've personally enjoyed the Dark Souls series more, which in my opinion had a much stronger art direction and theming than Elden Ring. that to me feels very scatter-brained with its ideas in comparison.

There are a small handful of people that will fight to the death over their stance on DeS somehow being superior to every other Souls game.
Like I said, the game's neat, there are a lot of cool ideas an interesting boss concepts, but the game is unpolished the builds lack diversity and it's generally inferior to its follow ups.

Phenomenal world and level design and the most memorable selection of bosses will do that, yes. Plus it just feels so clean to play, all your defensive options feel great and there's actually a reason to swap around armor depending on the fight (meanwhile armor is just pointless in DaS2 and medium rolling is practically just as good as light rolling in 3 and ER so why would you ever go light outside of pvp cheese). Everything is just so elegantly and deliberately designed. The only Souls game that comes close to being as generally good is DaS3 but DaS3 just lacks that nonlinearity that makes 1 so damned good.

The main thing I dislike about about DeS is how floaty the impacts feel, both on you and on the enemies. I'm not terribly keen on all the gimmicky boss fights either, they might be ok thematically but they make for boring gameplay.
The problem with DS1 is that it's unfinished. Demon Ruins & Lost Izalith are just a boring mess.
My favorite in the series is the least RPGish one, Sekiro. A very lean & tight package all around.

Yeah, I think generally it's not a great feeling game. A small but kind of funny nitpick I have is that, despite the numerous areas with verticality, you have no meaningful way of engaging with enemies under you thanks to the game lacking a plunging attack. With that context it's actually really funny that DaS1 went out of its way to show off its new plunging attack, almost as if the devs realized this was genuinely a flaw in DeS.

I appreciate what they do for shaking up the gameplay, and honestly I really do wish some puzzle elements were kept moving forward. It feels like, by the time we reached ER, the gameplay had devolved into a very formulaic pattern of spacing, rolling, and reacting to openings.

I'd agree, I think those might be the weakest parts of DaS1. That said I do think people overstate the whole "last third of DaS1 sucks" thing, Duke's Archives are still a good dungeon and the DLC areas are great.
