So, I'm about to get started with making the action system for my first person, slow-paced real time dungeon crawler. The idea currently is that holding a face button, then pressing a movement button while it's held will perform that specific action when the face button is released. So, you press X on it's own, and you do a standard sword slash. You hold X and tap Up before releasing, and you might do a quick jab. X+Right does a disarm, so on.Using the whole D-pad with L and R, this means that you can have up to seven different actions per button. The idea is that X is for your weapon skills, or primary attacks, Y is for magic skills or secondary actions, A is for items and interaction, and B is for state changes (like drawing your weapon, sneaking, scanning for points of interest nearby, or using special detection methods dependent on your skills)I'm just wondering if anyone's tried something like this before, and can you give some advice on either making it not suck, or doing it in a different way? The big thing I want to do is give the player the freedom to create a spell, potion, enchantment, or even weapon skill to do anything, sort of like if Morrowind's spell crafts were even more broken, and extended to doing different attacks.Thusly, I'll need the player to have the freedom to think "Well I'll probably never need this, but what the hey, I'll at least memorize this one, because you never know." and then they do need it. I'm hoping it'll stop the usual trap of just using their big damage move because they don't want to have to fiddle with menus switching to debuffs or status effects.
>>4009361>So, you press X on it's own, and you do a standard sword slash. You hold X and tap Up before releasing, and you might do a quick jab. X+Right does a disarm, so on.The thing I worry about with this (if I'm understanding it right) is that you won't be able to use your joysticks at all while performing a combo, since you're having to press both a face key and a movement key. So you won't be able to move or aim at all. The best control setup idea I have for this is that instead of using face keys, just use triggers & shoulders. For example, R2 for a regular slash, and then combos would still be movement keys. That way, you can aim your combo with right joystick but can't move since your thumbs off left joystick. This makes the most sense to me because I don't think you'd be running around while preparing a crazy spell or something. But I like this idea, there's a ton of interesting stuff you can do with it.
>>4010266>you won't be able to use your joysticks at all while performing a combo, since you're having to press both a face key and a movement key. So you won't be able to move or aim at all. Well on second thought... you could use all of your fingers to move your left joystick, right joystick, and face keys, and movement keys... But that's so weird kek. I've never played a game before where you feel you'd have to do that.I guess you could do this same thing with my control setup idea, so that you can control your left joystick too while comboing, but you could make nerf it by making movement speed slower. Not sure what you think though.
>>4010266Yeah, the idea was to just use the movement inputs for that. If you're already holding one, It won't cancel it out unless you let go.I realized after a while theorizing this that it's more or less what Elden Ring does with item selection. Hold the interact button, and your D-pad becomes an item select, or press a shoulder button to change your weapon grip. the difference is that that system is only for items, not your main attacks, and the D-pad is exclusively used for items and menu controls rather than movement. I'm hoping my game will be slow and simple enough to make that kind of thing work. I really like the idea of the player having that many skills ready at any given moment.I wanted the game to have a much more retro feel, so I'm challenging myself to see how closely to an SNES controller I can keep the controls at. At least by default. I'm not going to force tank controls for turning on everyone. I'll probably just be mildly disappointed if/when most players change that setting. I know first person dungeon crawling RPGs were more of a PC thing, but I still feel like it'll make for a fun experience.
Specced out a turn-based combat system that I want to test before implementing in Godot. Is it fine to spin up a completely random combat simulator to see how long combat takes/what boosts/penalties matter? Or should I implement a basic AI?
>>4006578I need to come to term with the facts, that no matter how I write my RPG, story, characters, it is going to suck compared to what I've envisioned.Heck it might simply just suck, no "compared to the ideal version" is necessary.
>>4006579bro i cannot play Mongol 2 on steam plz fix
Took a bit of a break from development, but I'm working on some proper characters now. (Sprite on the right is scrapped)
Recently released chapter 8 for free of my fantasy martial arts text based game, it's about up to 1,000,000 words now due to branching.www.auraclash.com/adventureMade a modding system for it that I'm excited to drop for chapter 10, should let people experiment more with the framework I made to let people make their own games.
demo went live a bit ago but haven't really posted it aroundmight as well shill it heredreamrouser.comhttps://lonelyskull.itch.io/dreamrouserwondering if i should post it in the undertale/deltarune fangame threadit's not really a fangame, but for obvious reasons it's not not one either
new game is going slow, but its going>>4015549screenshot looks good. whats the game about? your itch page is pretty barren considering how good the pic is
>>4015558"what if the crackpot theory I had about the SURVEY_PROGRAM eggs came true?"or in other words deltarune-like with more focus on secrets
>>4015423>advertise custom content requests in game to bring in more patreon subscribers>receive 40 waifu requests>shut off benefit immediatelyI am in writing debt and my game is now gooner city. Bury me somewhere nice and do not repeat my mistake. Currently adding pic related as the hot big sister to a rival-friend.
>>4016309>receive 40 waifu requestsI enjoy the waifu bits like every other guy, but you are already having a massive undertaking here, and we need more heroic battles, uses for different abilities/chi types, and deadly rivalries.Plus, if there are too many new waifus, you run at the risk of more established waifus falling out, and getting no content, despite someone getting invested in them much earlier in the story.
An earlier quest in my game has a part where you can advance it by overhearing a conversation. It seemed like a good way to help out the player if they don't find the next clue, I went through some work to script it as well. Now I am starting to think that is more restrictive? It makes it harder to avoid the quest if people know it is there, and want to do other things around the map.
>>4017245Do you have a quest journal type item? You could have something that keeps track of all your quests and give hints on how to continue them.
>>4016309How many of those requests are lolis?Or rare fetishes
I have no fucking idea what I'm doing when it comes to implementing turn-based combat
>>4015549couple of things>Walking animation's first frame should be with the legs extended. Right now if you time arrow keys you just kind of slide, and you slide at the start of moving>The battle scene looks really cool. I'm not a fan of undertale stuff (dodging etc) but I really like the presentation/3d effects>could just be because I have a shitzillion tabs open or an issue with loading the game in the browser in the first place, but I get small stutters when changing battle states sometimes (menu selection -> dodging phase)>You may want to include an alternate hint for the flower color puzzle. I thought I matched it with 1 left 2 mid 2 right but I have slight r/g colorblindness. didn't take me long to solve it but it could be a point of frustration>I do not care for the gay frog but I'm not the target audience for this>some of the attacks that come from the sides on Belladonna (the paw swipes) may be too fast to evade if you're on their side of the arena when they spawn. It would be fine on a second attempt, probably.
>>4018161Yeah I implemented the journal system after some trouble. I'll have to double-check if I managed to catch every quest's every stage, but it's there.
How do you test your game? how do you know all the stats are in tune with the player's expected path?
>>4019984put it on early access and enjoy the free qa labour
