Hello, I wanted to pitch something that I saw /vm/ do. Basically, they go through dead/unpopular mmos together as a group and make a thread to discuss them. I thought it would be a fun way for us to try games we typically wouldn't and find legitimate hidden gems. This thread is to gauge interest and give you an opportunity to shill a game you wanted to try or think is criminally underrated. Only rule is that it should have <500 reviews on Steam to really be considered obscure. Once we get five recs, we can hold a vote. To that end, I'm recommending Cardaire, a short, Yu-Gi-Oh inspired RPG where you build a deck and go on a tournament arc.
>>4009047i can't stand the artstyle clash between UI and the environments, but ofc I wanted similar styled games to what OP mentioned. (a yugioh single player RPG like forbidden memories, nightmare troubadour, sacred cards)now we need a Pokemon one
>>4009047>>4009303Overworld looks hella..cheap, can't pintpoint exactly why
>>4009047While that seems cool you might want a better rule to include rpgs outside of steam.Maybe pick a review site like metacritic or backlogdd? Also including rom hacks could be dope
>>4009047You want a clique here? take it to /vg/
>>4009047>log on to /vrpg/>see that stupid smiling slime on the pin>cuteness aggression instantly triggered>urge to bully intensifiesIt would be a disaster
>>4009469same rule can apply to those sites if the review count is low enough>>4009505god forbid we try to talk about video games
>>4009047Considering I sometimes post a copypasta of games including this on /v/, I feel legally obligated to support this project. As long as we actually play video games and we don't spend time with retarded shit like social movie nights, then we'll be infinitely better than MMOD.
>>4009631recommend something
>>4009633Why don't we pool a few games and make a vote?
>>4010161that's what I'm trying to do but no one's recommending anything
>>4009460I can tell you why. It's because every tree looks the same (they look shitty, too) and was lazily copy-pasted all over the place. The character models look stiff and out of place. There's a lack of shading in the grass, roads and water, making it all look flat.
>>4009047>Once we get five recs, we can hold a vote. And then what?
sounds fun. I recommend Excaliburian. It's freeware.
>>4010229Then we would presumably vote on a game to play around the same time. Like a book club.
>>4009047Anon you really should've prepared ahead of time at least a small list to get things going, it's easier for people to recommend stuff when they see that the project might go anywhere.Anyways, I recommend the Dungeon Traveler series, only the second game is on steam but it fits your requirement of sub 500 reviewshttps://store.steampowered.com/app/1901620/Dungeon_Travelers_To_Heart_2_in_Another_World/
>>4010229we play them and post our experiences in the thread for a set period of time. probably 3 weeks. >>4010323Maybe. I was worried people would feel choice paralysis if the list was too big. So far the choices are>Cardaire>Excaliburian>Dungeon Traveler 2 Just need 2 more recs and I'll start the strawpoll. If we don't get to 5 in 2 days, we'll just vote on these 3.
>>4009047I would suggest throwing this out in a popular rpg thread on /v/ or starting a thread with one. also it's a hard sell to get people in on buying unknown games. you'd have to do f2p ones, or easily pirateable
>>4010567I'll just upload whatever we pick in a mega for the thread
The OST is pleasant. Simple As and Duel 2 are my favorites.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvyG8YSVTlQI struggle to think of other shorter RPGs. Helen's Mysterious Castle might be a fun group play. It's only a few hours long.>>4010323I have a few fledgling hours into DT2 and I think something like it in length is highly ambitious.
>>4010925Added to the list. Just need one more.
>>4009047This game has been on my wishlist for a while, but I don't know if it's even worth picking up on sale. It looks really rough.I just checked and it looks like they are making a sequel that is vastly improved so I'll just wait for it I think
>>4011185It's fun. And fairly short. I personally have a little over 13 hours after beating the game but that does not include the post-game content which was added later.
>>4011185It's fun. And cheap. just keep an open mind.
Okay, time's up. https://strawpoll.com/7rnzVXjDanOAgain, don't let price dictate your decision. I'll just find/buy it online and share the files in a mega.
Oh and voting closes in 3 days.
As it turns out, Cardaire's never been published anywhere but Steam. For the people who already voted it in, let me kmow if the 4 dollar price tag is that big of a deal and we can redo the poll. Unless someone can link me a guide to remove Steam's API so I can upload it anyway
>>4009460A lot of overworld elements seems to be sloppily copypasted from Gen IV and V Pokemon titles, that's why.
Okay, I'm calling it here. We're doing Helen's Castle. It's also only ever gotten a steam release but it's... 2 bucks. I'll be more careful about only including games we can reliably get for free in the future but it's 2 bucks. We'll do this game for a week. Chronicle your playthrough and add your thoughts here. If the 2 dollar price tag's a dealbreaker, just wait until next week and add your recommendation for the next poll which will be vetted more.
>>4013083>Chronicle your playthrough and add your thoughts hereYou might wanna make a new thread in /vrpg/ and /v/ with the winning a game and link it here so more people are aware of the project + attracts more players
>>4013083Sounds fun. I'll start later or tomorrow.
>>4013106And here is a download for HMC. It's from cs.rin and the game filesize is super fucking tiny. I keep getting spam detection so I can't paste the link.
>>4013085/v/ doesn't talk about vidya but sure>>>/v/742668464
And we're off, with the stock RPG Maker music
she's so dopey
AND ILLITERATE
this weirdo fucking follows you if you go to the bottom of the screen
This game's sound design is super good
she looks too proud for someone who just killed a level 1 slime
>>4013217Not a lot of people visit /vrpg/ maybe even less go to /vm/ so thats just how we do things there...Plus, a lot of people (me included!) joined the /mmod/ through posts on /v/ so they 100% work
>>4013217Ah I missed it or I would have bumped.
HMC is rather on the shorter end so to any newcomers, don't feel scared about joining in.https://howlongtobeat.com/game/36591
DON'T GET CAUGHTApparently there is a BAD endhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1LWfIx6tkdb9v03mgcVE-zMAUrqMKIEclLCLYzjF1DSA/and a GOOD endhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1mM0XesI2NpkJidlYf8sWo8DJPSOCRm9mROfDScH1gtY
A villain with priorities.
Hello from /mmod/ how is this going?
also from /mmod/ going to check this game out
woooaah so many of us from /mmod/ this is awesome!
aieeeee where do i heal
>>4014371You get a Heal spell fairly early on. Otherwise, block to reduce damage or die to respawn back at your house with a full hp bar.
>have to be silent when you wander through this boss's area (no running or pot breaking)>because he's TRYING TO READ A BOOK, NIGGA
The dialogue is funny.
:) ?
I picked this one up from the Steam sale. Haven't given it a go yet, but I'll see if I can get to it this weekend. Good thread.
>>4009505Why would anyone want to hitch at that autistic hellhole?
I like the fact that this game just begins abruptly instead of boring me to death with an overly long introduction. You're just immediately dropped into the game and begin fighting monsters within about a minute. Other than that, I don't think this game is really for me. The waiting mechanic is neat in theory but makes the early battles feel like wars of attrition. Almost every JRPG I've played has a snooze-inducing early game filled with extremely easy or simple battles. Probably comfy for some people, but it's not fun for me.
>>4015583upgrade your weapons bitch.
>>4015583You don't level up and gain stats. Your experience goes toward leveling your weapons/spells/etc. Focus on leveling your Longsword as much as you can at the start. If you're not ending a regular fight within a few moves then something has gone terribly wrong on your end.
>>4015583I hate the waiting mechanic too I kept playing for a bit but some mobs you have to wait 3x in a row >>4015627How do you start with a sword? I got a bow to start with
>>4015843Explore and find weapons. If you're lost, the googledocs above give you a good guideline of where to go.
>>4009047I'd honestly love to do something like this for story heavy RPGs, but segmented into several chapters/stopping points with enough time to catch up for non-NEETs. as much as a novelty this sounds, organizing something like this would be total hell on 4chan
>vrpg has finally discovered SA-Tier Lets Play Threads after 20 years
>>4017092What’s next, Gamequoter?
>>4017092>>4017161Kinda wanna see game successions come back.We had a few fire emblem threads in /v/ where people passed saves around, was fun
>>4016561maybe dare to dream for once, bitch
>>4013083when's the next game? is it every 2 weeks like mmod
>>4018289We can just start the process now. It's 2 weeks but technically 3 for the one week voting period. EVERYONE START POSTING UR RECS AND KEEP THE RULES IN MINDhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/1961970/Akumi_Wars/This game is by the Adventure Quest Worlds artist
>>4018572My recc:https://store.steampowered.com/app/521620/Alchemist_Adventure/>There are no strict alchemical recipes, so you will be able to make your own unique potions and explore the possibilities of the rich alchemy system. The game is currently on sale on Steam as well.
>>4015597>>4015627>>4015843Thanks for the advice anons. I played a little more after upgrading weapons. I think this game is just a little too minimalist and simplistic for me. Still, it was cool to branch out and play something that wasn't my normal kind of game.
Adding in Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands: https://www.gog.com/en/game/deathbulge_battle_of_the_bandsThis shill vid got me interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfVdiQUAlqk
>>4018572>>4020620Meh, seems like a crapshoot with what? Two people playing the first game. I'm one but last week had me drowning in two other games and I do need to put aside some time to finish Helen's game this week at the latest.
>>4020928Yeah no one's really trying. Might just be a failed experiment.
>>4020928>>4021808Tbf theres no voting structure like mmod or when we start on new game. This anon just said post your recs >>4018572
4chan is a not a suitable place for a joint-bookclub.
so do we have a vote for the next game?
>big plot cutscene>sky shifts from cheery blue to dusk afterwardLittle things like that are neat
>>4023174
>>4022768Well, I'll keep things going for the hand full of people who are interested. We'll keep it small and focused. But if you want this to succeed, make sure to post about your experiences frequently. https://strawpoll.com/bVg8BNkq1yY
>>4023292Seriously, don't forget to advertise on faster boards.../vrpg/ is too small and too niche for this project to get more people, the few of us still here prob all came from /mmod/And most importantly NEVER GIVE UP!!!
>>4023292Voted. Will take me a minute to actually start playing got to wait for my neetbux to come back in
>>4023292Voted - I like the idea and will start playing along with the next game.
>>4023637I'll post the game file when voting's done on the 29th
>>4023292>make sure to post about your experiences frequentlyI would strongly suggest people give HMC a(nother) shot. You can finish it in an hour or two. It is a criminally short game with above-average writing -- that is to say there is a level of noticeable effort; it is a translation but there were no unclear moments that I can remember, and the prose upholds some rather funny humor. The ending does a cool segment where near about everybody you meet comes back to help, including old 'bosses' that you even control while they fight off a terrifying boss-foe.
erm what the heck
sup
...not really? your music is baller tho
This crazy bitch really MADE IT ALL UP????Holy fuck this is unnerving
!
man, that last act was something else
he is LITERALLY me
>>4024354Alright done. Fun game, I liked the twists and ending segment. It ended being really unique. I'm glad this was recommended.
>>4024514The inn... is too much...
>>4009047>cliqueslop
>>4024520Glad you had a good time. I'm glad I caught this thread because it motivated me to go back and actually complete it this time.>fag who first recommended the game
>>4024794>cliqueschizo
>>4024956go back to your /vg/ tranny clique
I'll likely just be making a new thread for each game we play from this point on just to make it easier for people to know what we're currently playing.
>>4025142how about you fuck off and let anons play some games together do you also say the minecraft anons are a clique you dumb faggot
>>4025142We're not even playing multiplayer games so we won't have to deal with their faggotry (for example: some of them only make characters to take pictures with each other instead of to play the actual game). Or off-topic shit like movie night.
>>4024956>>4025155>>4025521Why the fuck are you guys giving him (you)s?Just ignore him ffs, let his pathetic ass bump the thread and leave
>>4025542Are you one of the anons who pretends that the MMOd group has no inner core?
Alright no one's voting anymore so I just made the thread:>>4025771
helens mysterious castle was so fun I wish there was more >>40257785 more days until get my neetbux to start this but how is it so far
>>4027511It's pretty fun! Definitely a mish mash of a lot of different assets but the combat animations are very satisfying and the skill system leaves a lot of room for customization. Very rough around the edges in some areas though but it's a good time.
