Why aren't there more space JRPGs?
>>
Anachronox.
>>
Because its harder to make than fantasy
>>
>>4009156
It's hard to make a space adventure without going full on science fantasy like Star Wars. Best you can get is Traveller.
>>
sorry, you're stuck playing Infinite Space again
>>
>>4009184
You dont have to put that much into it. Final Fantasy IV, VII and Robotrek all had some space time.
>>
Why does this dude spam retarded jRPG threads constantly? Like, he doesn't have anything to say about games, why post?

What I love about star ocean 4 is unlike all the other games in the series, it's an actual Sci fi jrpg. You even get your own ship to explore the galaxy with mass effect style. You can really feel all the money pumped into that one by Microsoft to get it to be a timed exclusive for them, when you compare the production quality of 4 to the rest of the series. The drop from 4 to 5 I hear is astounding.

Also 4 has the best girl in the whole series
>>
From a certain perspective, Kingdom Hearts is a space JRPG.
>>
>>4009156
space is too big. name one setting you think in a game that is big. space is way bigger than that. and then double it, space is even bigger than that, and then bigger even than that. it's just too big.
>>
>>4009841
Jeez, and I thought it was a long way down the road to the chemist, but apparently that's just peanuts in comparison.
>>
>>4009859
think about how big a peanut is, and then quadruple it. next, think about that huge peanut and then think about how far you could throw it at your peak physical form, then quadruple that distance. space is at least twice as big as that.
>>
>>4009862
Zeno proved that throwing peanuts is impossible.
>>
>>4009995
And you need mental Pepto to clean you out.

If you're going to go somewhat realistic the space setting lends itself to a lot of black void and samey space stations.
If not you might as well do fantasy.
>>
>>4011691
Just because it's a space game doesn't mean it has to all be in space. You can explore the planets, and even space stations themselves can have variety and be very sovlful.

And what isn't? All kinds of environments can be boiled down to just being a background texture you drop the characters onto, not unlike a stage for actors to play on. It's all in the presentation.
>>
>>4016769
... something where the "space" part is important?
>>
>>4009586
I think this is what annoys me about 4. It's exactly what I wanted from the series but it's also completely retarded and I could do very much with having the option to leave half the cast on their own god forsaken rocks.
>>
>>4016795
Which based on all the JRPGs that have a space theme, only Xenosaga has a placement
>>
>>4011945
Its definitely doable but at a certain point you are just reskinning fantasy because no spells or melee is inherently lame which a good space RPG that's an actual space RPG would be guns only.
Star wars is just space samurais with space wizards
Dune is just space feudalism with space witches
Warhammer 40k is literally just reskinned space fantasy
Even mass effect which least didn't have melee still created space magic with """""""bio""""""" abilities

I llay Ostranauts. its a space scavenging sim. it has some RPG mechanics.
i am extremely generous any time a game takes a stab at classical mechanics, and this game does. it doesnt have orbits or gravity (not really, gravity is mostly a vidual difference) but objects do move and stop according to the rules of Newton.
i cant think of a single jRPG that is ever set in space and does anything interesting with it. also i dont know this, but maybe the japanese arent crazy about space like america is or can be.

Phantasy Star is your best bet, I think.
>>
>>4016769
>All kinds of environments can be boiled down to just being a background texture you drop the characters onto
they don't have to be. There are multiple reasons why "medieval" fantasy is the most popular for RPGs (and no, not "normalfags won't play anything else"). Decentralized kingdoms, melee combat, lawless zones, wilderness zones, and a wide variety of monsters and mythical creatures that fit cleanly into such a setting.

A Space Opera setting is often similar to fantasy, but with interplanetary travel and space stations instead of dark age kingdoms separated by hostile wilderness. The nature of interplanetary travel can be significantly different from traditional travel. though it's often treated somewhat similarly to seafaring. Either way you have some emphasis on vehicles for long-distance travel. Interplanetary travel also allows you to easily combine arbitrarily exotic environments and societies into a single setting. A world that would be jarringly random as medieval fantasy might work fine in space.

I don't know. Japs like to tap into myth and medieval stuff so I think that's probably a big reason why. There also just aren't a TON of JRPGs, not ones worth your time anyway.

The people saying it'd be too big or hard are funny. We're talking about video games, you don't have to worry about practical sets or whatever. All it takes is a good skybox and an illusion of distance. The only difference between "lava zone, forest zone, ice zone" and "lava planet, forest planet, ice planet" is the skybox.

Space exploration is not a "default" setting for most cultures. By and large the idea of space exploration is ingrained in cultures who actually made steps to exploring space.

This is not a value judgement

To be honest HSR's space setting doesn't really do it any favors nor is it really utilized.
If you are gonna go science fantasy without ever utilizing the science, you can generally get a better "plot" by writing a story that is fantasy on the surface and is slowly revealed to be science fantasy, like in utawarerumono
Games like HSR that are science fantasy on the cover but spend the entire story either being antiquity fantasy or urban fantasy are just going to disappoint people

Exactly! It's annoying how they could go to an entire planet and they only stuck to like 3 maps/areas in that planet.

>ctrl+f
>no Star Cruiser
>no Star control
shameful... and this is supposed to be an RPG board?
>>
>>4046278
Great examples of the inherent tension between space settings and rpgs. Both of those games veer toward other genres.
>>
>>4046278
Dunno about the other but Star Control has just about zero RPG elements - it does have customizability (mothership, escort fleet), but all of it is trivially reversible and therefore doesn't count.
>>
>>4046304
To be fair, it's not scifi videogames fault that retards associate dice rolling RNG from D&D as the only way to properly "role play"
>>
>>4046414
The roleplaying must come from within you. Dice rolling is just to provide some mechanics for adjudicating results of actions.
There are a large number of “RPG” players who do not roleplay, for whatever reason, which is always funny
>>
>>4009156
Same reason there aren't many space WRPGs, normies crave the familiar and that means generic fantaslop.
>>
It's more that people only really care about stories that deal with other people. Human drama and Human concerns.

Human-scale events.

Space is too huge a subject. It's beyond the grasp of most people to care.

This is why the most popular sci fi media always boils down to either interpersonal drama on a ship, completely overshadowing any spacey part of the work, or sword fights on the surface of a planet. It's something we instinctively understand, but more importantly, it's something we give a shit about. Planets exploding is just beyond our scope of concern.
>>
>>4046414
DnD + derivatives, well their players, make a difference between ROLEplay and ROLLplay.

>>4046664
Scale can be a factor:
* Interplanetary (single system) can still be manageable.
* Interstellar (multiple systems, single galaxy) tend to be where dev have to chose between RPG or Space Sim.
* Intergalatic (multiple galaxies) ?
>>
>>4046414
"Dice-rolling" is a (nearly) essential part of what an RPG is. The kind of roleplaying you are talking about is just play-acting. Not what RPGs actually are, holistically.
>>
>>4046424
It happens because RPGs aren't mainly about roleplaying and never have been. They're called roleplaying in the context of wargames like Chainmail, bringing with it loads of assumptions about what the actual gameplay is. The 'roleplaying' is a sliding scale which can be quite minimal and still count.
>>
>>4047363
>>4047363
>"Dice-rolling" is a (nearly) essential part of what an RPG is.
Not at all. All you lose by getting rid of dice-rolling is indeterminism, which is only beneficial if the bredth of mechanics and/or scenarios lack necessary variety to keep players engaged that way.
The primary hallmark of RPGs is the plethora of stats with a noticable degree of continuity and highly varied skills/abilities/perks/whatever, whose extreme distributions (among the viable ones) require the players to adopt substantially different playstyles / problem-solving methods (roles).
>>
>>4047390

Stopped reading here, RPGlet
>>
>>4047463
Of course you did. I already held you in contempt so this changes nothing. You are inferior to me in knowledge and intellect.

Because people prefer to buy fantasy RPGs. Much harder to be a SciFi hit than a fantasy hit.

My big problem with sci-fi JRPGs is they don't ever actually use the fact that it's sci-fi in interesting ways other than a few examples like Xenogears/saga. A lot of them are just "run around with sword but magic is called something different".
You visit a planet and its all just one biome and you only do one thing on each planet before moving to the next. It's no different from visiting The Forest of Fairies to get the Gem of Nature and then going to The Volcanic Wastes to get the Magma Crystal, you're just visiting Gaea for the S.E.E.D. Module and Gehenna for the Fireproof Exosuit.

I like Outlaw Star where magic WAS a thing, but mages in the past used up most of the galaxy's mana and so some people take the tiny bits that are left and forge it into bullets to fire spells from caster guns. And then there's the Tao wizards who use not-magic based on the fact that Tao mysticism is 100% real in the setting.

But it doesn't feel like fantasy in space, it feels like the wild west in space, except the chinese beat us to the space race.

i mean that's sort of the point of both genres. fantasy pulls from tradition and legend, scifi is much more free and allows for a good deal of speculation and novelty

the real issue with gamers and designers alike is that they don't like novelty. i got it back in the 80s and 90s when video games themselves were novel, i don't really get it anymore
>>
Like >>4016833 said the problem is most RPGs in space are just fantasy RPGs, but in space. If your thoughts went to "space elves" you kinda missed the point of using space as a setting

>>
>>4105659
on one hand that's fair, on the other hand: people play jap games all the time without issues.
>>
>>4104913
Well, like >>4046664 said, the scale of "space" is too large for most humans to care. The fate of planets and stars is beyond human concern, and human-level stories and events are not greatly changed by being on a space ship/station as opposed to a village or city on Earth. The only difference in this context IS the set dressing.

You can certainly make scifi space stories that focus on the science and the theory and the grand cosmos, plenty have been done, but you will find your audience small and niche and hyper critical. This is why you don't see more of them, it is the path of most resistance and you have to just be a super scifi nerd to have the resolve to carry through with it anyway for passion.
>>
>>4009156
Fewer story writing cliches to fall back on.
You have to do a lot of pencil pushing to explain how shit works in your space setting, while you can just shrug and assume nobody really questions a fantasy one.

Space settings also have a lot more logistical hurdles to overcome for drama. There's no reason information doesn't travel at the speed of light, so any sort of real drama ends up being very contrived. There's also a bit of a setting/tone mismatch, where your badass level 70 with maxed gear can be trivially killed by a level 1 engineer with access to the airlock terminal, that fundamentally distresses the power trippers.

But, the lack of as defined genre conventions to lean on, really takes precedence.
>>
>>4105636
If you want discussion you have to start discussion you can't just drop a game with no commentary and expect anyone to jump in and start commenting, especially if they haven't played it before. That's just a basic failure of communication and understanding human nature and has nothing to do with genres or tastes one way or the other.
>>

>>4029980
You're missing the reason why sci-fi art is like that now: autistic children demanding everything be real, even in their fantasies. You're blaming artists, when the truth is that they're just trying to pay rent and that means they have to obey the market pressures applied to them.
You are that market pressure. Your demands are what determines what artists do. You're the ones to blame. You're the problem.

Scifi 'fans' have become super critical in recent times I guess because they have a complex about their nerd interest being seen as immature. Its a problem with a lot of hobbies and special interests where posers have infected the fandom and only want to be associated with the subject matter if it's seen as serious and realistic

But it IS shit

It's hard to ignore that, apart from treating space like oceans and planets like continents to colonize, a lot of the fanciful, hypothetical technology of early science fiction writers has come to pass, along with things they didn't even consider.

since you lot are so lazy i've taken up the mantle of having ai translate the game.

it wasn't me. i still love /m/ designs. and since this is about nippons RPGs, they still use "unrealistic" design. though i think the newer designs are ugly. most realistic mechs i love are from old skool Battletech and they copied a bunch from japanese Macross.

yeah I will, don't worry. it'll help that i'm also a native german speaker.

Xenosaga Episode I started out really strong. The Woglinde is a dope ship design and the Elsa / Durandal are good too. But with space stuff you gotta go big or go home. The areas need to be bigger or it doesn't sell the illusion at all. Kinda the same issue Elder Scrolls has

So it turns out the game is actually pretty big and proofreading all this will be a pain. I've fixed the vast majority of things that stood out to me. From the little proofreading I've done, about 90% of the game has been translated flawlessly. The remaining 10% consist of mostly liberties the AI took when translating, making it more of a localization. I've spotted only two instances of actual mistranslations in a rather large sample size.

Compared to machine translations of, say, a Japanese title, this is night an day. I would not feel bad releasing it in the state it is now and patching things up later, especially as more eyes may look upon this. Is this something y'all would be interested in, or do you refuse to play this unless the translation is 100% flawless? Also, should I just post this here? Because I fell like this game would deserve its own thread.

i have no idea. is this another autistic slavic game with penis monsters like FearHunger? then i am not interdasted. but you should release it anyway. more humans playing it , more feedback on which translations are clearly wrong.

or make it something like a closed beta and send the download link to a few people who also do translations ,and are willing to playtest it.

>is this another autistic slavic game with penis monsters like FearHunger?
Absolutely not. It's got humor and good, fair gameplay. Tons to find and discover. It's not a horror title, though it can get autistic. In a good sense. Also, it's German, not slavic.
>but you should release it anyway. more humans playing it , more feedback on which translations are clearly wrong.
Yeah, I'll check a few more things and get a release ready.
>or make it something like a closed beta
No thank you, that's way too much trouble and effort than what I'm willing to put into this.

Look I'm not asking for the Xelee Sequence here where it goes so far in the hard aspect of hard scifi that the characters are basically characters and more a way of expanding the setting, but using the justification of "the audience isn't big enough" is basically just an excuse for no one to even try.

Read the Foundation trilgy, it's hard science fiction and yet the focus is primarily on humans and the society they inhabit, and keeps it to that even on a galactic scale. In fact the only reason it doesn't work in RPG form despite it being a series where the heroes always win because they're more clever than their opponents rather than being stronger, is because it's more a collection of vignettes rather than one large unifying narrative for the most part.
>>

Legend of the Galactic Heroes, despite being basically the Napoleonic Wars IN SPACE, actually has most of those things in some form despite being written in the 80s

Nearly all of our current technology is just a refinement of shit we developed in the 40s and 50s that has only recently been allowed commercially because the military has even better secret shit that makes a smartphone look like an 8-track player.

Major science fiction was written nearly exclusively by intel spooks who didn't "predict" or make up anything, they simply took what they already saw behind the curtain and stuck it in a setting of plausible deniability.

The show has almost nothing to do with the books. Hell even Asimov's continuation of the series in the 80s because he needed the money, while bad, is still more in the spirit of the original trilogy.
>>

>because the military has even better secret shit that makes a smartphone look like an 8-track player.
No sometimes it's because some shit is better staying fiction.
It's not that we can't figure out flying cars, we basically figured that out in the 50s, the reason we dont have them is because what do you think would happen if we took modern traffic with human drivers and put it in the sky? It would turn every Friday rush hour into 9/11 times a thousand.
>>
>>4105735
In common practice, Space settings (especially space opera and soft sci-fi) are a way to restore an unknown frontier to a setting. The modern world is mapped to the last acre complete with satellite imagery, GPS and deeds to every parcel of land, internet everywhere. Some remote places exist, technically, but not in the way they did a millenia ago.

hover cars? they will probably work as badly as hover shoes. if you mean actual flying in the sky, probably too expensive in terms of fuel cost. helicopters are probably cheaper to make. army guys just don't wanna fix what isn't broken.

this is a very strange take

for one thing most SF writers were left wing, anti-government, anti-military, or all three. most speculative tech is portrayed as negative or with unintended consequences

the military (and CIA) like to cultivate the idea that they're beyond bleeding edge, but the truth is much more mundane and also much, much more sad.

do you know COBOL? few people do, it's a programming language that predates C, Prolog, and Pascal by over a decade. it's incredibly old, clunky, outdated, impossible to troubleshoot and a nightmare to maintain

but if you know the language you can pull down $200,000 / year working for the military because there have substantial amounts of tech that continue to rely on it

in fact COBOL itself was meant as a stopgap language to provide a service to the DoD before the real language could be completed. but then DoD pressured them not to because they didn't want to upgrade, and they've been using it for 60 years now

the reason SF is so good at predicting tech - and the same reason why there should be more space JRPGs - is that when you ask a creative person to speculate they tend to approach it by extrapolating human nature and think it "ok how would this REALLY work?". games can make that 100x better because you could control the tech yourself

that's also why a lot of fantasy JRPGs can be bummers when the question of "how could this magic work? how would it change us?" is "idk just works and there's really no notable changes". SF usually has to make some sort of sense

they should have used Bill Gate's QBASIC if they wanna be cheapskate.

i made some primitive games in qbasic
they were very simple, but it's an easy programming language.
