Why aren't there more space JRPGs?
Anachronox.
Because its harder to make than fantasy
>>4009156It's hard to make a space adventure without going full on science fantasy like Star Wars. Best you can get is Traveller.
sorry, you're stuck playing Infinite Space again
>>4009184You dont have to put that much into it. Final Fantasy IV, VII and Robotrek all had some space time.
Why does this dude spam retarded jRPG threads constantly? Like, he doesn't have anything to say about games, why post?
>>4009156Because Xeno a shit
>>4009229you could have used Star Ocean instead, the most spacebait JRPGs that barely used space as a setting.
>>4009156normalfags don't like sci-fi, a lot won't touch fiction unless it has tolkienslop elements
>>4009156PLAY COLONY SHIPit's like AGE OF DECADENCE in spacegreatest RPG of the 20s don't remember anything from the story cuz the dialogues seemed AI generated
>>4009339>greatest RPG of the 20s?
>>4009339It's not ai generated, you bot
>>4009345well it felt like that to me>>4009341problem?
>>4009304What I love about star ocean 4 is unlike all the other games in the series, it's an actual Sci fi jrpg. You even get your own ship to explore the galaxy with mass effect style. You can really feel all the money pumped into that one by Microsoft to get it to be a timed exclusive for them, when you compare the production quality of 4 to the rest of the series. The drop from 4 to 5 I hear is astounding. Also 4 has the best girl in the whole series
From a certain perspective, Kingdom Hearts is a space JRPG.
>>4009156space is too big. name one setting you think in a game that is big. space is way bigger than that. and then double it, space is even bigger than that, and then bigger even than that. it's just too big.
>>4009841Jeez, and I thought it was a long way down the road to the chemist, but apparently that's just peanuts in comparison.
>>4009859think about how big a peanut is, and then quadruple it. next, think about that huge peanut and then think about how far you could throw it at your peak physical form, then quadruple that distance. space is at least twice as big as that.
>>4009862Zeno proved that throwing peanuts is impossible.
>>4009995And you need mental Pepto to clean you out.
>>4009862Find it amazing then how we are seeing the light from objects that are getting close to the so called Big Bang in reference to co moving distances of greater than the accepted age of the universe.
>>4009156japs don't really care about space
>>4011076Because they would lose face?
>>4009156If you're going to go somewhat realistic the space setting lends itself to a lot of black void and samey space stations. If not you might as well do fantasy.
>>4011691Just because it's a space game doesn't mean it has to all be in space. You can explore the planets, and even space stations themselves can have variety and be very sovlful.
>>4009184Its not.
>>4011945It is in context. Well, modern context. Pre New Cinema, that what gave us SW, etc. and really, pre space race, space WAS fantasy.
>>4009156Define "Space RPG".
>>40095864 is literally unplayable3 is peak ludokino
>>4012756This but the other way around
>>4012387>"Space RPG"An RPG, in Space.
>>4015942In THE Space anon.
>>4015942the "space" part could just be windows dressing...
>>4016647Big window
>>4009156Expensive setting
>>4016647And what isn't? All kinds of environments can be boiled down to just being a background texture you drop the characters onto, not unlike a stage for actors to play on. It's all in the presentation.
>>4016769... something where the "space" part is important?
>>4009586I think this is what annoys me about 4. It's exactly what I wanted from the series but it's also completely retarded and I could do very much with having the option to leave half the cast on their own god forsaken rocks.
>>4016795Which based on all the JRPGs that have a space theme, only Xenosaga has a placement
>>4011945Its definitely doable but at a certain point you are just reskinning fantasy because no spells or melee is inherently lame which a good space RPG that's an actual space RPG would be guns only.Star wars is just space samurais with space wizardsDune is just space feudalism with space witchesWarhammer 40k is literally just reskinned space fantasyEven mass effect which least didn't have melee still created space magic with """""""bio""""""" abilities
>>4016833What’s Namco x Capcom?
>>4009156I llay Ostranauts. its a space scavenging sim. it has some RPG mechanics.i am extremely generous any time a game takes a stab at classical mechanics, and this game does. it doesnt have orbits or gravity (not really, gravity is mostly a vidual difference) but objects do move and stop according to the rules of Newton.i cant think of a single jRPG that is ever set in space and does anything interesting with it. also i dont know this, but maybe the japanese arent crazy about space like america is or can be.
>>4017060>i cant think of a single jRPG that is ever set in space and does anything interesting with it.Phantasy Star is your best bet, I think.
>>4016769>All kinds of environments can be boiled down to just being a background texture you drop the characters ontothey don't have to be. There are multiple reasons why "medieval" fantasy is the most popular for RPGs (and no, not "normalfags won't play anything else"). Decentralized kingdoms, melee combat, lawless zones, wilderness zones, and a wide variety of monsters and mythical creatures that fit cleanly into such a setting. A Space Opera setting is often similar to fantasy, but with interplanetary travel and space stations instead of dark age kingdoms separated by hostile wilderness. The nature of interplanetary travel can be significantly different from traditional travel. though it's often treated somewhat similarly to seafaring. Either way you have some emphasis on vehicles for long-distance travel. Interplanetary travel also allows you to easily combine arbitrarily exotic environments and societies into a single setting. A world that would be jarringly random as medieval fantasy might work fine in space.
>>4017151Xenogears a shit
>>4017431Xenohaters just exposing their IQ every time they post
>>4017436Shit game
>>4017440name one good game
>>4016835that's just SRWOG which is still largely in the Earth Sphere or Endless Frontier or La Gias, depending on installmentwhile there are plenty of space colonies and the Moon is inhabited (by moon knights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CrYf9zyfpg), it hasn't gotten past Pluto yet
>>4024051https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxubemTvXlY
>>4024009Phantasy Star, Inb4 any retort.
>>4024053Didn't play but Xenogears is a masterpiece, sorry
>>4024053>Inb4 any retortthis anon won
>>4009156I don't know. Japs like to tap into myth and medieval stuff so I think that's probably a big reason why. There also just aren't a TON of JRPGs, not ones worth your time anyway. The people saying it'd be too big or hard are funny. We're talking about video games, you don't have to worry about practical sets or whatever. All it takes is a good skybox and an illusion of distance. The only difference between "lava zone, forest zone, ice zone" and "lava planet, forest planet, ice planet" is the skybox.
>>4017431Xenogears isn't a space RPG.
>>4024361Planetary Fantasy
>>4024129>>4024361Indeed, it’s shit.
I am gooning to XB2 MOMO right now
>>4024053Better than Unc Megami Tensei at least
>>4009156Because Itoi pussied out and scrapped the space exploration element from Earthbound. Now some mediocre fangame beat him to a punch before unveiling the idea.
>game has space in the title>barely about space
>>4024624>game only had traction because some deranged furfag millennial turn a pathetic ip post-op tranny
>>4024624it's weird because Land Christening takes place entirely in space
>>4009156For some reason space is a curse for RPGs, western and eastern. It's where they go to die.
>>4017060>i cant think of a single jRPG that is ever set in space and does anything interesting with it. also i dont know this, but maybe the japanese arent crazy about space like america is or can be.Only one that comes to mind is Infinite Space.
>>4017060>i cant think of a single jRPG that is ever set in space and does anything interesting with it>>4009158>Anachronox.
>>4025790That's not Japanese THOUGH
>>4025792It’s a JRPG.
>>4025812JAPANESE RPG.What did you think the J stood for?
>>4025842I know what JRPGs are. Anachronox is a JRPG. You would know this, if you had played it. There’s only like one other anon on this board who has tho
>>4025842Jank
>>4025848It wasn't made in Japan, by any Japanese devs. It is by definition, not a JRPG
>>4009156>>4009184>>4009312>>4009841>>4011691>>4017151Honkai Star Rail says hello. Highest grossing gacha game and it's just a normal 4 niggers in a JRPG with swordsmen and dragons, but set on jupiter sized worldships, space las vegas casino ringworlds, and in greek worlds simulated by a supercomputer. Basically DBZ or animu warhammer 40k. No need to overthink it. Yoshi-p: "uh i don't know if the next final fantasy will be turn based or not, our research says turn based does not sell" eat shit.
>>4025848I've played anachronox, it's a very charismatic rpg. I recall getting soft locked somewhere and quit because I knew the game ended on a unresolved cliffhangerbut that must have been over 10 years ago, I need to play it again.
>>4026538>Hoyoslop
>>4025760careful who you give those flowers to, anon
>>4009156We need to bring back Buck Rogers.
>>4026538anybody who takes gacha games seriously is a retard
>>4028733pulp sci fi was so cool
Space exploration is not a "default" setting for most cultures. By and large the idea of space exploration is ingrained in cultures who actually made steps to exploring space. This is not a value judgement
>>4009156Space setting hasn't been popular with the Japs since the 90s. I can't even remember the last space anime to come out of Japan besides Space Dandy, and that came out in 2014.
>>4029808This
>>4026538To be honest HSR's space setting doesn't really do it any favors nor is it really utilized. If you are gonna go science fantasy without ever utilizing the science, you can generally get a better "plot" by writing a story that is fantasy on the surface and is slowly revealed to be science fantasy, like in utawarerumonoGames like HSR that are science fantasy on the cover but spend the entire story either being antiquity fantasy or urban fantasy are just going to disappoint people
>Anachronox>made by Ion-fucking-Stormsay no more, thanks for the recommendation senpai
>>4030529Hope you like it. You’re gonna love the sequel.
>>4009156WHY ARE ALL JRPGS SET IN EITHER HIGHSCHOOL OR SHIT WESTERN FANTASY RIPOFF WITH BAD DIALOGUE AND WINY TROPE CHARACTERS
>>4030591Pretty sure Persona is like the only major jrpg set in high school.
>>4030594How could you forget True Love and FF8?
>>4030606FF8 isnt in high school its a military academy and the characters are all graduates who are now employees. Never heard of the other one, i assume its some indieslop that obviously doesnt count
>>4030594hahaTrails of Cold Steel Valkyria Chronicles 2Hourai HighSMT if...
>>4009229So are you asking why there aren't more space JRPGs or are you asking why there aren't more JRPGs where you go to space at some point? Those are two different questions
>>4030591because high school was the last time the majority of japanese people were happy.
>>4030607>FF8 isnt in high school it’s a military academy and the characters are all graduates who are now employees.Did you play the game? They’re mostly 17 year old students. Quistis is 18 and an instructor.
>>4032298Can you read? They are graduates made employees. The age doesn't matter.
>>4009304>you could have used Star Ocean instead, the most spacebait JRPGs that barely used space as a setting.Exactly! It's annoying how they could go to an entire planet and they only stuck to like 3 maps/areas in that planet.
