They're all good but I'll go 8>9>7.

I think the reason I liked 7 the least was because the story is so famous I knew everything that was going to happen from the start.
>>
VII>VIII>IX

They are also part of my Top 5 for the series and the only ones, which also includes VI (before VII) and V (between VII and VIII). That said, I generally agree with any and all complaints and critiques lobbied at VIII; I simply love it in spite of all that.

1. 8
feels revolutionary, political atmosphere is huge, anti-grind game, hated because you have to think for the first time in a ff game, characterization is shit though and the story surrounding the characters is lame. Incredible music and symbolism. Only ff where unlocking ultimate weapons/abilities/GFs feels like you achieved something.
2. 9
love letter to ff fans. Most technically competent psx game ever. Game feels small though compared to 8 and even 7. World is incredible up until you leave the mist continent and then it feels empty and the game is basically over (four dungeons - iifa tree, desert palace, oeilvert, ipsen's castle, an optional city, then you go to terra and then the final dungeon, which is just a shitty staircase with boss fights). Lots of the abilities feel pointless and you'll never use most of them. Three or four ultimate weapons you don't get until the last dungeon and vivi's one is like five screens away from the final boss. Also, Vivi's ultimate weapon is the only way to unlock his final ability. Story is simplistic but not a bad thing. The sidequests are very limited and the chocograph shit is tedious.
3. 7
best story with philosophical ramifications. Feels technically inferior to 8 and 9. Shit load of extras to do.

I'd argue that Cloud and Tifa is the most awkward romance in FF.
At least Squall and Rinoa acknowledge their attraction to each other.
Cloud is too depressed all the time and being with Tifa seems to just make him remember all the trauma he has. Tifa acts like a mom who pushes him around.
Sure you can say the lifestream scene the most intimate couple scene but it also felt more like a therapy instead of both showing love to each other. Platonic at best.

There's only been two FFs that I didn't enjoy and that is TA and X-2, and X-2 was so awful it killed any desire I had to continue on in the franchise.

1. VII*
It is the best in the series and it has yet to be topped.

2. Tactics
Excellent TTRPG. The whole presentation is awesome.

3. IV
This is the first FF I've ever played and I've loved it ever since. I come back to this game at least once every few years, if not playing it then watching someone else play it.

4. X
The last true FF game in my book. Was really cool that the summons actually fought in battle and weren't just a big magic spell. Really like the setting and the bittersweet ending. Probably one of the best moviegame RPGs ever made.

5. IX*
It's not the best, but there's something nostalgic about it and while I absolutely hate the speed of the battles and the stealing mechanics, there's still a certain charm about this one. Really sucks that the plot starts losing gas just after the Outer Continent.

6. V
I didn't used to like this one very much but it's grown on me. The job class system is really fun.

7. VI
I didn't used to like this one very much either, but it's grown on me too. I always liked it more than V up until semi-recently. I do like how the WoR opens up.

8. VIII*
It's a lot of style over substance, but it has style in spades. Not the best, not the worst.

9. III
I've never actually finished this one because everything this does, V does better, but it's neat.

10. I
Again, I've never actually finished this one but that's because I've never owned the game and so I get so far and then the game would either go back to a friend or back to the rental store. Hope to one day go back and finish this.

11. Tactics Advance
Tactics is just a really hard act to follow up to, and I hate the "chore" feel to the "missions" in the beginning of the game. The law system also is annoying. Never finished, never had a desire to finish.

cont.
>>
>>4015974
12. II
The leveling system is neat on paper. I hate the execution. Haven't finished, don't plan on picking it back up.

13. X-2
I hate this game.
I absolutely hate this game.
I hate how the assets are recycled. I hate how they assassinated Yuna's character. I hate how they made Brother a total creep. I hate how you have to get 100% to get the best ending. I don't like either New Yevon or the Youth League. The tone of the game is completely off. I don't understand why we have Payne when Lulu is right there.
... the only saving grace this game has is the job class system, and while it has it's moments? It is not enough life support to keep me engaged. While I didn't expect an experience that was even as good as X? I expected something that diminish what X did, and this game diminishes X. I try to forget this game exists.

That was illuminating, sincerely.

Y'know, for a long time I noticed FF4 takes a lot out of Star Wars and repurposes it. A short, non-exhaustive list:
- Red Wings? X Wings.

- Kain and Golbez being mind controlled? Jedi Mind Trick.

- Golbez uses lightning powers to steal Fabul's crystal? Force Lightning.

- Golbez's dismembered hand stealing dwarf crystal? Darth Vader's lopped off mechanical hand.

etc.

The question I have for you is do you know of anything else plagiarized in FF? I'm dying to know of anything I've missed in the other FFs, even FF7. You're the only other anon I've read that is at all jazzed about this sort of thing that wasn't just in a screenshot or something

Most people who love FFVIII don't even know why they love it. They've likely just been won over by the game's atmosphere and aesthetic. Which is entirely understandable; the game has amazing atmosphere and aesthetic, and there's a lot of nuance and charm in the character interactions and dialogue, especially in the early parts. I'd argue FFVIII is actually one of the best in the series in terms of worldbuilding and immersion. If you're the kind of person who loves to get into character, search every nook and cranny, and obsessively chat up every NPC, there's a lot to love here. It's just that very little of it actually has to do with the gameplay or the narrative that drives it.

Since the most tangible components of the game are so obviously flawed, fans who want to glaze it will make erroneous claims that the romance is one of the best in gaming (it's not) or that there's hidden subtext that actually makes it a masterpiece (there isn't). FFVIII is obviously rushed as hell, and while it may contain individual elements that seem profound or clever, everything is so slapdash and half-baked that the game is ultimately less than the sum of its parts. In a vacuum, a lot of the character/story elements are fairly interesting and have a lot of potential. But in reality, the game is a slog and most of the characters are just window dressing for a fairly generic "quiet, broody guy gets the passionate, bubbly girl" self-insert fantasy.

>there's a lot of nuance and charm in the character interactions and dialogue, especially in the early parts
In fact, if you are the kind of person who really spends a lot of time combing the environments and NPCs for details, there's a good chance that's why you were ultimately disappointed in the game; disc 1 is chock full of things that seem like setups for long-term plot points and/or character growth. But after disc 1 it's like the game completely forgets all of it and just sends you pinballing around a mostly-empty world map just to get things over with.

One of the aspects that stood out to me after my last playthrough was just how good the game cultivates the "school hangout vibe" that is popular in Japanese culture. It's almost on the same level as Persona, in a more subtle way. Despite not having names, pretty much all of your fellow students are unique and recognizable, and many of them have "arcs" that continue throughout the game if you're willing to keep checking up on them. The game ultimately does a phenomenal job of "anchoring" the player to a very specific place in this fictional world. It's just a shame that pretty much none of it matters or materially improves the quality of the gameplay or story. Arguably, it clashes with it, since giving that much of a fuck about the school and the students in it is completely out-of-character for the protagonist; from Squall's perspective, it literally makes more sense to just ignore all this work the devs put in and just go from objective to objective.

Y'know, I think I just had an epiphany. For the longest time I thought Zidane was sourced from Goku, and I think he still is. After all, he is an alien, he was born to kill an entire planet, but was raised to be good by his adoptive parent and had total amnesia to his original purpose. Supposed to be evil but raised to be good. Also he's got a tail and when he goes trance he turns even more monkey like. So seems pretty close.

... but that doesn't explain elements like Zorn and Thorn, and then it kind of just hit me. Disney's Hercules has a similar set up, not exactly the same, but similar, and Hercules has got Pain and Panic, two comic relief villains. Maybe that's where Zorn and Thorn came from?

I'll partially disagree with you here, FF8 does contain a lot of sub-text but it ultimately goes nowhere. The game was rushed and became a victim of the cutting room floor as a result. But I dare say that it is also one of the games saving graces, because the world was so well developed and has so many loose ends it leaves the mystery and wonder to the players imagination. Coming at it from a purely critical perspective I can understand your conclusion but I think

>Arguably, it clashes with it, since giving that much of a fuck about the school and the students in it is completely out-of-character for the protagonist; from Squall's perspective, it literally makes more sense to just ignore all this work the devs put in and just go from objective to objective.
