I liked it and I want more of it.

play JA2 1.13
>>
>>4017091
Play Silent Storm
Play UFO: Enemy Unknown (X-COM: UFO Defense)
Play Dead Hand
Play Battle Brothers
We don't have enough tacticool games with granular action points.

What do you expect? Aside from Grizzly for obvious reasons, there's a lot of general dialogue asserting men and women aren't the same, and also AIM is a mostly-white pool of mostly-Western mercs killing black Africans.

his spiel against communism when talking to Chimurenga was funny

Reeeeeeeeeeeee you can’t just acknowledge biology

it was fun

Are there any newer games like this? The JA2 visual puts off my zoomer tastebuds like FO2 does. Wasteland 3 was ok but I'm looking for something with more tactical depth.

OwlCat Games ironically if you want turnbased
Aliens Dark Descent if you want real time

I mean I already know I didn't like FO2 despite the gameplay because of the visuals.

What has the dev been up to since anyway?

Remaster for their city builder + new features. Just released last year so they're probably working on their next new project now.

I didn't like Kingmaker much
Any chance I will enjoy Rogue Trader?
>>
>>4017091
I just started playing it recently, and it's a lot better than I expected. It actually seems like a worthy successor to JA2. I was sort of expecting it to be more like the newer X-COM games: polished and streamlined, but missing a lot of what made the originals fun.

>>4017303
I really should get around to trying Silent Storm at some point. I've been aware of it for ages, but every time I've been in the mood for that sort of game, I've ended up replaying JA2 or X-COM instead.

>>4017338
Said Africans also aren't portrayed in a particularly positive way. An awful lot of them are superstitious, tribalistic, violent retards, not just victims of foreign powers exploiting their resources.

>>4017523
Pretty much all the complexity in Owlcat games is in the character/team building. Combat itself tends to be extremely simple, in part because Owlcat absolutely sucks at encounter design and enemy AI. I wish they would make a game that wasn't so ridiculously long just so they could spend time making encounters that aren't completely forgettable.
>>
My only real complaints with JA3 so far are that the enemy AI has some abusable weaknesses (which was also true in JA2 and is probably inevitable to an extent in this sort of game) and that it feels like Barry doesn't have any competition if you want to start with an explosives expert. There are viable reasons to pick and choose among other types of specialists, even if one of them is probably the most optimal choice overall, but there aren't any other explosives experts in Barry's price range, and the ones that are 3-4 times as expensive as him are arguably still less good.

>which was also true in JA2
JA2 1.13 improves this significantly, if you haven't tried it.

>it feels like Barry doesn't have any competition
Barry was also god-tier in JA2. I'm OK with that, it's more fun if the game's not perfectly balanced.
>>
>>4017091
maybe /vst/ would have some recommendations

>JA2 1.13 improves this significantly, if you haven't tried it.
It seems like I recall the AI still having some pretty significant weaknesses, but it has been a while, and my memories of the original and 1.13 blur together a bit. It seems like there might have been some option to at least make them less eager to march into Overwatch Hell or something.

>Barry was also god-tier in JA2. I'm OK with that, it's more fun if the game's not perfectly balanced.
Yeah, I don't think the mercs need to be especially well-balanced, and I'm fine with Barry being a really good pick for his price, I just wish there was another decent starting choice in his niche for variety's sake. I think you could make a pretty good argument for, say, Livewire being overall better than the other cheap mechanic mercenaries, but the others still offer things she doesn't, and I like having those choices.
>>
>>4020733
Didn't Barry not know how to swim in 2? IIRC this was a drawback in water maps, since he couldn't join the rest of the team in swimming around an obvious choke point.
>>
>>4021013
You're right! I had no idea there were non-swimmer mercs. I guess it never came up during my playthrough.

>>4020733
Fair enough. I've seen some mods that make Deedee Bombastic recruitable, so you're not alone thinking there aren't enough choices.
>>
>>4017091
Playing through JA2 Stracc on Ironman now it's seriously my favorite game ever. Glad to hear JA3 is passable, something about it I can't put my finger on puts me off and I never picked it up.
I guess I just know in my heart it can't beat JA2
>>
>>4017507
Menace lacks the RPG features, and belongs on /vst/, but is the most obvious comparison. Underrail isn't new but I find it scratches the same tactical itch

should i play it?
>>
>>4032651
Yes, and dont be afraid to play on hard-mode if you've already played a granular action-point crpg.
Also you WILL need to have team with all the specialties.

Picrel would be your primary Teacher to learn others Agi and Dex.

Nigger, that is actually the weakest part of the game, unless you go with a wholly custom party.
>>
>>4020733
1.13 also adds in a bunch of mercs from both JA1 and WF.

>Must need to adjust too many of setting option or otherwise game bad, very bad!
Unironically this. I thought 1.13 was cool like 15 years ago, but when I tried to play it recently, what I really wanted was a mostly-vanilla experience with some small tweaks and features. Unfortunately, 1.13’s “mostly vanilla” preset still changes too much shit for my liking (often arbitrarily and incomprehensibly), and it just wasn’t what I wanted.
>>
>>4017091
the shitty humor ruined entire game for me
>>
>>4017329
ngl I'd rather have a trigger warning and then the game actually does and says what it wants, than a world where games just don't want to touch shit that's "problematic" at all out of fear of offending.
When Persona 3 was getting a remake everyone was screaming about how they'd change this and that. They didn't, they put a trigger warning at the start, didn't apologize at all with "it reflected a different time" like the Yakuza 3 remaster did, and left the script untouched.
