Titan Quest. The new DLCs make your experience worse (though only Ragnarok can't be skipped), but the original game + Immortal Throne are incredibly comfy to play through and enjoy the art direction.

Just putting the controller down and standing still in the plains of Whiterun during a light rain, gazing across the distant landscape while Far Horizons plays is more satisfying than 99.9% of games ever made.

Playing games from my childhood don't comfort me, it's just a reminder that I can never go back and they don't have the same impact they did back then.
These days the only comfort games are ones with persistent multiplayer because I can log in and feel like other people actually exist somewhere out there. But I guess with AI they could all just be bots now so even that is gone.

I am not fond of that period of my life and I much more comfortable in the modern day. The titles themselves don't bring comfort, but I love seeing new titles in a similar vane and creating pieces inspired by said titles.

FF5. A couple of years ago on my birthday, nobody called me. None of my friends and none of my family. I genuinely thought about killing myself, but decided to play FF5 instead. Dunno if it was the right choice or not, but it's still an incredibly comfy game for me.

That's the beauty of Skyrim. I can do RPG stuff, quest around and bash skulls and whatever I feel like, but I can also just wander aimlessly taking in the views and music and thoroughly enjoy my time with it. It offers so much, whenever I want.

Unc jamz.

I remember trying to like this tune more than I actually did in high school. Because DJ Shadow was popular with hipster musicheads and this was the only track of his I kinda liked except the unkle track with Thom Yorke when it was released. I kept trying to see what the fuss was about with DJ Shadow besides the cool name, and there just wasn't a lot there at the time.

https://youtu.be/kEqGdGAgAjw?si=9e1l16liiykvORIC

DJ Shadow was in UNC-le.

Anyway, VIDEOGAMES.

I wanted to put on a game where I could just wander around, take in the vibes and not worry about having to deal with any kind of forced event or altercation. And it's especially true with this one - you never get forced into any kind of combat situation unless you specifically go to mission areas. I mean, you might get jumped by thugs in a Downtown alleyway, but that's such a minor and easily avoidable encounter anyway.

>and feel like other people actually exist somewhere out there
Or you could just go outside and remind yourself why you don't go outside to begin with when other people will inevitably remind you of their existence first hand. Happens to me every now and then.

>birthday
A serious question. Why do people care about some arbitrary daily cycle number simply because it so happens to coincide with the number of the cycle their meat unit got first exposed to the outside elements or spawned, if you will? I don't think I ever """celebrated""" that happening past the primary school nor did I ever considered that significant in any way. Is it really that important?

>Why do people care about some arbitrary daily cycle number simply because it so happens to coincide with the number of the cycle their meat unit got first exposed to the outside elements or spawned, if you will? I don't think I ever """celebrated""" that happening past the primary school nor did I ever considered that significant in any way. Is it really that important?
Entirely dependent on context. From a passionless, philosophical, cynicism that is awaiting the heat death of the universe? Perhaps not.

From the standpoint of human psychology? Most definitely. Identity is destiny, and if someone adopts the attribute of their identity that their very identity itself isn't even so much as worthy as the same celebration that all other humans get? That is a fast track to accepting and capitulating to very unfavorable circumstances in life.
You have to ask yourself, "If I'm not worth it to me, who am I worth to in order to do the thing I need to get done?" Most people in that predicament to ask that question turn up a, "No one."
Very few good things come from this mindset.

If nothing else, a birthday should be a celebration that in spite of all the adversity, you looked it square in the eye, spat in it's face, and made it one more year.

I am that anon. And well, your question is entirely irrelevant to my anecdote. I never said I was "celebrating" my birthday. I was literally at home alone. It's just that nobody called me, yet every year I am shamed and chastised if I don't call my brother/sister/mom/dad/whatever on their birthday. And it's not like the suicide contemplation was a spur of the moment thing; it had nothing to do with the fact it was my birthday. I've been contemplating suicide for years at this point. But the way I was being treated on my birthday was extremely hypocritical of my family, and basically just confirmed that they don't consider me an equal.

>it so happens to coincide with the number of the cycle their meat unit got first exposed to the outside elements or spawned, if you will?
As someone who regularly uses reddit, this is the most disgustingly reddit sentence I've seen in a while. My family may hate me, and I may be suicidal, but at least I don't say shit like this unironically, lmao.

I didn't say that. I said I get chastised if I don't. Apart from my mom, I actually have the best track record of not forgetting my family's birthdays.

Stop trying so hard to read everything in the absolute worst faith possible just so you can be a dismissive cunt. Fuck, I'm a suicidal redditor who only has cats and video games in his life, and even I don't do that. Thanks for making me feel better about myself, anon.

Good choice. Happy super belated Birthday anon. I truly appreciate you anti-nihilists to counterbalance the rest of this board: >>4048791 >>4048391

For me then: FF4, D2, most of the bigger ARPGs like Dragon's Dogma, Titan Quest, Grim Dawn. I still haven't actually played 5 since I didn't play 2 and 3 yet either but I know it's where the job system originated which I love in Tactics.

Later it was running builds in Kingmaker and Wrath, might still go back to Wrath.

For me now: BG3 with a carefully cultivated set of mods to balance out items, classes, and feats and also add a great amount of extra battle and item content that is so well placed and on theme it's almost like expanding the story. Honestly like a whole extra game's worth, the modder called Fade really knocks them out of the park along with a couple of others.

I could almost infinitely roll builds and different parties to see all the ways this game can play out like this, and the tactical demand is in a great place with on tactician + honor ruleset on.

Discomfort game:
>World of warcraft retail
Almost feels enough like the real rpg it used to be to suck you in sometimes but then hits you with modern slop and grinding soul away and dealing with cliques and toxic personalities for a raid/mythic schedule just to have your progression become garbage again on the next live service update. And crafting still sucks since post WOLTK.

>FF4
One of mine too. And I generally try to crank it out in day. Usually takes about 10-12 hours for me. I like a quick comfort game.

Others I like...
>FF1
Only the original black background NES version. All the remakes monkey with the math, and everytime they figure out how to make the game worse. either do some form of 2 to 4 fighters, with maybe a redmage and/or blackbelt, or 2 black belts. Sometimes I'll try a completely oddball party.

>Chrono Trigger
I generally go with the big hitters, Ayla, Chrono, Frog, the Robot (I always rename him). I love Ayla because she can steal.

>Final Fantasy Adventure/Secret of Mana/Legend of Mana/Visions of Mana
I love getting lost in the mana worlds. Pretty much any of the Mana games, except trials. Nothing against trials, it's just not one of my comfort games.
