I'm new to this genre, what RPG has the best story in the genre in your opinion and why?

>>4020340>sheathVagina.
>no serious repliesWhat a useless fucking board.
>>4020748that's gratitude for ya
>>4020334not FSN.i should play the Prisma Illya game for NDS.
>>4020748blame zoomers. everything is parody or satire; nothing is honest or genuine. nothing can be legitimately good, only ironically so-bad-it's-good.
>>4020334I gotchu senpai!XenogearsMorrowindPlanescape: TormentFinal Fantasy 7
>>4020748JRPGs don't deserve serious discussion. What is there to discuss, anyway? The same "4 niggas in a row" battle system each use? The same character levelling economy based on grinding? The same handful of archetypes used in every story? It's just the waifus left, and you have /a/ and /v/ for that.
>>4020334I can say with full confidence that Fate/stay night is garbage.
>>4020340close enough to the original pitch
>>4020334Dragon Age Origins and Final Fantasy 10
>>4021000Hi there! You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making! Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

>>4020334what game?
>>4021153it's a VN; Fate/Stay Night
>>4020748OP started his thread with an image from some anime semi-porn "game" that isn't even close to an RPG, of course it's going to immediately get derailed.
>>4020748I expected better from /vrpg/ too in the past but if you've browsed even RPGCodex serious threads about JRPGs are going to be derailed by ironic weebs who think that everything is a joke.

RPG storylines are worthless.RPGs as a genre are about the player becoming so immersed into their character that they embrace whatever story is in the game. It was far more valuable to me getting so invested into my baulders gate bhaalspawn Character that I had to actually stand up and walk back and forth to weigh my options.Far more than some storyline that's only worth a wiki binge
>>4021698Good for you, Anon. Not what was asked for, and thus, completely irrelevant to the thread.
>>4021706I answered he question the only proper wayThe storyline is worthless, the games ability to make you invested in your own avatar is the important bit.Go read a book if you just want a story, fantasy books are massive at the moment.
>>4020334>what RPG has the best storyGeneforge 1 & Geneforge 2
>>4021698>>4021709You're looking for an RP session, not a video gameVideo games have systems that you have to use, not something you want full control in>The storyline is worthless, the games ability to make you invested in your own avatar is the important bit. Also that's not the game's storyline, you're just making your own fanfic>Go read a bookOP is asking for video game story, not a book. Video games have a more capable storytelling potential than books.>inb4 books let you exercise your imagination moreThat's why you should go write your own book. The one you think is superior than all those games you think whose stories are worthless.
>>4021720It's an RPG, the entire point is immersion and being invested enough in the story via your character eyes. It's the whole strength of the genre and video games itself. The story is just the thing that your character follows.Sorry you missed the point, and yeah if all you care about is a story.Go read a book any generic 4/5 will clear any """"masterpiece """" video game story easily in details and character depth.
>>4021721>It's an RPG, the entire point is immersion and being invested enough in the story via your character eyes. Then just say that you don't agree with the label "JRPGs". >It's the whole strength of the genre and video games itself.Wrong. Someone else finds the story of a game is enjoyable then you are still going to say their opinion is worthless because you think stories have to be told in a certain way for it to have any "worth".You think that RPGs should always be a larp session because the term originated from DnD.>Go read a book any generic 4/5 will clear any """"masterpiece """" video game story easily in details and character depth. Not really. Books don't have ludonarrative harmony
>>4021724This is by far the dumbest reply I have received all year.
>>4021725Likewise

>>4021698>>4021709>>4021721Agreed. Every story enthusiast needs to swallow the /lit/ truth and create their own "stories" within RPGs through gameplay. Satisfy your cravings for "good stories" through books.
>>4021810Peak midwit
>>4021817>The ones who actually read books instead of chasing mediocre stories by failed "authors" are the midwits.>The ones who are capable of turning any game into an immersive experience through the power of imagination are midwits.Nah, we're fine.
>>4021753I sorta liked Redemption, but three halves of the story is just world of darkness metaplot infodump/wank, and the love story is not enough to make up for the vampire theater melodrama.
Persona 2 and Phantasy star IV>>4021010Are you blaming zoomers for an internet culture that that's actually older than the majority of those zoomers?
>>4021810Pretty weak for 4chan, looks more like a reddit text
>>4021819Yes, criticizing the artistic value of any narrative game a priori without engaging with its actual merits, treating books as an abstract, objectively superior category, again, without providing any criteria or analysis, relying purely on status, and finally, trying to look sophisticated by magnifying toys (Pokémon) that act as a mirror. Yes, I’d say that is the exact definition of a midwit attitude. What’s the point of putting effort into writing something when the consumer can just project whatever they want onto it? Is it fiction, or a Rorschach test?
>>4021825We are highly confident this text is entirely human.
>>4021827If you make a mistake you are ESL, if you don't make any and articulate with precision it's AI. But entering into the merits instead of changing the topic? It is as if the /lit/fags were allergic to honesty
>>4021824Two options are presented to you:>4chan>RedditYou can only pick one.
>>4020334Disgaea
>>4021825No story in a 'video game/RPG' can compete with a decent book, let alone a good one. >I couldn't care less if you don't read, Mr John Video Games/RPG. Keep consuming stories written by authors who are bound to be limited in their creativity and forced to deliver the same bland narratives. The 'midwit' is you.
>>4021893Now that's what I call a solid argument! Thanks for enlightening a humble plebeian like myself.
>>4021893>a decent bookPost three.
>>4021709>I answered he question the only proper wayNo, you answered the question like a tranny, with grandiose ideas of your own opinions. Either that or as a troll. Distinction without a difference, though. They both amount to the same thing: Your opinion is worthless to anyone with two braincells to cause friction.
>>4021893Ludonarrative harmony.Where is this in books? Tell me.>inb4 "books don't need it", proving dishonesty
uhhh so i personally loved the psx era of FF and i think most of them belong on a best stories list but FFX and IX as games stand out to me (i never touched 7 out of all the FF games because i dont know)my friends loved wild arms, legend of dragoon, suidoken IIlots of people like FF tactics and it seems like one of the most political FF outside of 12. chrono trigger, Xenogears, vagrant story and valkerie profile were always talked about in my era of gamingi liked parasyte eve and its made a comebackpeople mention planet torment a lot when giving suggestions post disco Elysium
>>4022205Suikodens yes, FFs no.and PE's plot was game original. nothing to do with the book or the movie plot.
>>4021893P:ST is better than most books ever made though
>>4022198desu you're just an aphantasia npc
>>4022205these are 'decen't but still cringe as fuck. this is basically the *best* games have to offer. honestly, it's pathetic. i used to be a storyfag, too.
>>4022356Define cringe, and tell me what books aren't cringe according to you
>>4022360There's a lot to complain about. You can start with arguing that the likes of JRPGs are just a string of cutscenes in between random nonsensical battles that have nothing to do with the plot. Your 'potential' as an interactive platform? Unrealized. Your game? A movie in disguise. It's laughable. A lot of those are my favorite games but I'm not going to praise the medium they're on as a superior platform for story delivery. That would be objectively false. The likes of Planescape and Disco, on the other hand, suggest a degree of interactivity that's limited. It is "cringe" when something that's supposed to function doesn't simply because the option wasn't programmed in. Not to say you can't enjoy them for what they are but it feels very disheartening to come up with ideas that can't be pursued. The world becomes shallow and 'gamey' when the illusion becomes apparent. Also, it is *always* going to be cringe when you encounter the likes of technical limitations like invisible walls and obstacles you can't climb over. The limitations of the medium are self-evident.
>>4022371Can you tell me in which movie you have control over the pacing? Where you can take your time reading the dialogue? Or in which movie you can explore a genuinely existing, dimensional world, rather than a simple background? (No, movie sets are not this, because it's only what the director chooses to show you, effectively a backdrop, not a livable world). You can talk to the inhabitants, inspect the buildings. Movies cannot replicate this kind of environmental storytelling. Gameplay consists of this too, not just combat, and even there, a character using specific moves, specific attacks, or animations can convey something that isn't said in words. Example: even before the game tells you "they are connected to you" you'll already feel it if that character shares the same attack pattern as someone else.>It is "cringe" when something that's supposed to function doesn't simply because the option wasn't programmed in.I don't understand your point, does an RPG necessarily have to have an open ended story where you can change the course of events through dialogue? If a JRPG doesn't set that as a goal, why should I consider it something it "fails" at doing, when it never aimed to do so in the first place?Anyway, maybe unrelated, but just to say: this whole realism thing makes little sense. Is it realistic for a character in a book to launch into an extremely long monologue while, plot wise, they're sitting in a tavern? Nobody in real life would ever do something like that
>>4022353>desu you're just an aphantasia npcSee you cannot provide any honest arguments.Who cares about your opinion since you cannot do anything to convince the other people about it.>aphantasiaMore like you thinking everything is worthless since you cannot imagine you having any value in it because of your simple-minded brain.
