I played Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Advance, loved both. I played Advance Wars 1 and 2 and also enjoyed both. I played a random Fire Emblem GBA game and liked it but I can't recall much about itWhat should I check out next in the strategy/tactical RPG realm? Fire Emblem and Disgaea are well-liked but they have so many entries in each series that it seems daunting to just pick one and dive in (and idk if I want to go one by one starting at the beginning)What would you suggest for someone who's not a complete virgin to the genre but only had one real boyfriend and he used a condom?Side question: what is the general distinction between strategy RPGs and tactical RPGs? Are they supposed to be synonymous or are they used interchangeably out of ignorance?
>>4020391You should always go with release order in any series. Also make sure to play La Pucelle Tactics before any Disgaea game as Disgaea is the spiritual sequel and has several references to it.
>>4020391Really obvious answer but...Tactics Ogre is to FFT basically what Soul Calibur is to Tekken. That is to say, extremely similar game designs as it is expected. If you liked those games it is a safe bet. It does some things worse and some things better.
>>4020575>Tactics Ogre is to FFT basically what Soul Calibur is to TekkenWhatFFT was Square poaching the guy behind TO to make a not-sequel heavily inspired by itTekken came out multiple years before Soul Calibur
>>4020578I was just trying to make a point that they are similar in how they approach the genre, like how the namco games approach 3D fighters. Calm down.
>>4020391>what is the general distinction between strategy RPGs and tactical RPGs?Granularity and scale for the most part. Tactics are about small-scale fights with a lot of tiny moving parts, while strategy is more long-term planning and management. For example, Jagged Alliance 2 has elements of both, tactical fights in decent-sized sectors and the long-term strategy of amassing the wealth needed to tackle the final area. FFT, Fire Emblem, Disgaea, and Vandal Hearts are Tactics, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is Strategy. Basically; tactics is about winning battles, strategy is about winning wars.Personally I recommend Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre, OB is a bit dated but really good once you get into it. If you want something a bit more straightforward, the Shining Force series from the 90s is worth checking out.
>>4020391Fire Emblem is like Pokémon, the rom hacks are better than the official games.Play Sacred Stones Reforged.
>>4020391ARC THE LAD COLLECTION!!!!!!Play that shit with a guide....There is alot of shit you can miss if you don't Also...Alright here's the thing>play with a guide....It's straightforward but there are TEENY TINY details that you can miss if you aren't careful that will make the experience much better>romanicing stones, always check the mailbox at arc's house no matter what You can easily miss a romancing stone you can never get>do every challenge at amidar, you can get summons that way>do the forbidden dungeon before you finish the game. You can get a character that will make the game easier, and add much more story>ARC 2Don't be eager to move the story along, whenever a hunter's mission is available DO IT.Play monster arena, catch a bunch of bullshit monsters and complete the basic arena shit, the prizes are worth it. Also you can train your main party too once you have done that in the endurance match option.Made the final boss my bitch.Play NIS series in ORDER >NIS seriesplay in order>rhapsody>la pucelleplay the psp version or PC>disgaeapc or psp>phantom bravepc or wii>Makai kingdompsp>disgaea 2\pc or psp>prinny can I be the hero?>soul nomad>disgaea 3Vita version or PC>prinny can I be the hero? 2>Zettai hero project>disgaea 4>disgaea D2>disgaea 5Quality of life makes it hard to return to other games after the fact. Also story.
>>4020585>I was just trying to make a point that they are similar in how they approach the genre, like how the namco games approach 3D fighters. Calm down.FFT and TO have a specific relationship that Soul Calibur and Tekken do not (they're designed by the same guy, and FFT is derivative of, and subsequent to, TO, which goes beyond "they play similarly and if you like one you'll probably like the other"), hence it's not a very good analogy. That's all.
>>4020391Fellseal is indie fft. Bad graphics, decent class selection, serviceable itemization. Pathbreakers, the devs second game is coming this year. That's about it in the fantasy section, the rest is either scifi or roguelite trpg.
>>4020713>which goes beyond "they play similarly and if you like one you'll probably like the other"Well we mostly care about that here.
>>4020832This is what happens to you poor kids after they remove analogies from the SAT
>>4020833You are just being pedantic
>>4020833There's always been a heavy IQ component.
>>4020391Tactics games are not real RPGs
Trouble shooter
Pedantics in RPGs are so dumb since they didn't even try to be reasonable at all
>>4020391Play fire emblem in release order from the one you left off which means>Sacred Stones, doing one route is fine>Path of radiance>Radiant dawn>Skip shadow dragon unless you care for the story connects with the next title>New mystery of the emblem>awakening, just keep in mind this is easily the worst entry in the series if you’re in it for the strategy aspect>Fire emblem fates conquest, you can skip birthright its worthless, revelation is optional if you want the full context of the plot >You can skip shadows of valentia but this is a nice grinding game if you’re in the mood for it>Fire emblem 3 houses, i recommend only doing one route but its fine doing all 4 if you enjoyed it, verdant wind and silver snow have the most satisfying conclusions and explain the most about the overall story>Fire emblem engage, if the story gees too bad to tolerate just skip it, the gameplay of this game is top notch and the best in the series so its worth experiencing for just thatIf you want to experience the older entires:>fire emblem binding blade, plays just like the gba game you played but harder>thracia>you can try geneology but like valentia, awakening and birthright this is a poor strategy game and more of a game for the story>all other games were remade, gaiden is the original version of valentia and shadow dragon and new mystery both have remakes listed above
SRW Z is the best isometric japanese tactics game
>>4020391Try Triangle StrategyI was a huge fan of it
>>4021767without verticality it wouldn't even scratch Fire Emblem level of strategic depth
>>4022320SRW is not really a strategy game and its more about the fanservice and hype moments. Its fine if you want to play something easy and falls under the category of srpg like FFT or if you’re a super robot fan.
