Am i crazy or does is the UI in this game hurt to look at? It feels like the UI looks fine at a surface glance, but has a bunch of tiny things all adding up. I'm just a few hours in and already got a whole list of things I wish I could fix:

- The exp tally screen with the giant flag waving behind is torture
- It's hard to tell the units class visually
- The floating spinning cards everywhere. There's so much shit all over on the battlefield
- The floating HP bars are essential for gameplay, but now there's another layer of shit all over everything. I had a look back at Triangle Strategy screenshots and the HP bars there were 1/3 the size. Or in Disgaea 5, they're at the player's feet so they don't cover shit up and give a better sense of place to each character
- The little pointer thing above your highlighted square is higher than it should be, so it looks like you're always highlighting the square above you. You have to rely on the ground color, which isn't contrasty enough and sometimes gets fucked by:
- The camera angle makes higher elevations match things behind it pixel-perfectly so it's hard to aim at the right unit in those cases
- The top down view would be good. Except that it zooms back and forth to isometric for every action you take. It's unusable except for a quick position check
- In the party menu, my characters are organized by level. The horizontal spacing is too damn wide so instead of "Lv3, Lv4, Lv5", it reads like "Lv, 3Lv, 4Lv, 5Lv"

After day 1, my eyes physically hurt but I figured it was because of that early level with the heavy rain and constantly lightning flashes (lmao). Halfway through day 2, I'm grinding in this normal city map pic related and can feel it starting already. I've played a bunch of TRPGs and never felt this before, even some cheap low budget ones on the DS.

Another screenshot, i missed it in the first one but you also have the action selection menu in the center of the screen covering up even more of it

Giant fucking flag waving around like crazy instead of a normal solid background

Also note the blue grid makes it look like the ceiling of that building lines up with the lower surface floor next to it. The classes along the bottom all looking samey. You can't even see the main character in the center of the screen and the hand cursor above him is pointing at the unit above him

I liked the UI in the PSP version honestly.
I just hated the changes to stats and leveling.
Reborn just made it all worse, despite reverting back to the old leveling system
>>
>>4022224
i never played the older versions but i can already see here, that pointing down glove cursor is in the right place vertically and is easily distinguishable from what's behind it

this is nice too; the action menu is in the upper left and doesn't cover gameplay

"-44 pts 100%" here is also better on the psp. Good visual clarity and the HP/MP bars below aren't crowding it like in Reborn.

psp has the giant flag exp screen, noooooooooo

This is better too though. Decent spacing and nice solid shadows below each unit

psp still has cards spamming the field. HP bars look better. classes are still samey. So it's a lot better overall but still not great
>>
>>4022242
>psp still has cards spamming the field
Nah but those cards are not randomly spawned on the field. They only spawn as a loot, which is exactly what the original PSX/SNES/Saturn version does as well

The ones I agree with you. The rest don't bother me.
>>
>>4022224
The PSP version looks more crisp yeah.
>>
>>4022224
They had little space and had to be innovative
>>4022212
Never saw it like that once
>>
>>4022273
Snes doesn't have cards
>>
>>4023000
Wrong. It has stats increasing cards.
>>
>>4023000
They have though as >>4023048
said.
please replay the game again or just check youtube, grandpa

It does hurt my eyes

Can you have 100 characters in this and get to level 100? Otherwise, they messed the spacing and font selection.
>>
was Tactics Ogre Reborn by the same developers as Ivalice Chronicles?
>>
>>4041215
Units is 100, level is 50.
>>
>>4046398
the spacing is still bad. It should be narrower until the character is level 100.
>>
>>4022224
I've had this game on hold for far too long. The reborn version put it back on the menu. But since I'm a stickler for good UX/UI, I kinda have my doubts about this version now.
I'm not sure what version I should play now. Reading the thread, I'm leaning towards the PSP version.
What did that version different for leveling?
>>
>>4022212
The shitfilter hurts the most.
>>
>>4046644
PSP version is notorious for having a very stupid leveling and loot system.
You basically level the classes instead of the characters. And that sounds good when you can take a new recruit and instantly make them a level appropriate class you often used, but the other side of the coin is when you get a new class that starts as level 1.
It's a really sore spot in that version along with other design choices that are dumb.
That said, it is my favorite version between the 2 if we involve mods that fix the many flaws.
I would say if you can stomach weird decisions and maybe looking up mods that fix it (if you are emulating), go for it.
Reborn plays differently and is more streamlined and is the easiest choice for most people. It's way less charming to me but I can see why people can'tbe bothered to mess around with the PSP version.
>>
>>4046733
I actually like that concept from the sound of it. Can you grind repeatable battles? Otherwise, I might give the PS version a whirl
>>
>>4046802
In PSP you have random encounters on the maps you land on.
Those were replaced with training in Reborn which is a fake battle where your units can't die.
If you're up for discovering just how dumb the PSP version gets with some half baked mechanics you can have fun treating it like a game design lesson. At least its mechanics work as intended even if they are comically unbalanced. I would strongly advice looking up cheats once the honeymoon period is over though. No reason you have to suffer the crafting system not being 100% accurate for example, or enemies stealing your loot.
