Pokemon might be among the most unnecessarily complicated/convluted, but also doesn't mean it's the most complex. Most of the interactions between types don't make sense to begin with. Fortunately each types in Pokemon have their own gimmicks (Grass resisting grass status moves, flying types not being affected by entry hazards, electric types not being able to be paralyzed, fire types with burn, ice types with frozen, poison, etc) which combined with the dual type system and abilities make the whole thing pretty deep.

It's certainly deliberately designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible.

The strength of Persona and SMT games are in their well-designed encounters and scenarios typical of Atlus fashion, but the battles are pretty meh on its own (think a PVP situation, it will be just a basic fight). Vengeance and P5Royal added traits which is a good start but it's still far behind Pokemon.

With 18 types, there are 171 possible two-type combinations. That gives the system a huge number of possible defensive profiles.

So:

18 X 171 = 3,078 possible type interactions.

That's just elements, then you've held item effects, 1000 different moves many of which have unique quirks, and the Pokémons static ability. Now pick 4 moves per Mon (limited choices are more strategic than a game like FF where everyone gets to be a skill monkey), and there's invert 1000 mons.......

That's a shit ton of variety and depth.

Of course the official games waste all of this, but fangames unlock its real potential.
