Why does Icewind Dale 2 feel so different from the first game?
>>
>>4024084
It's 3rd edition.
>>
Different version of infinity engine, that supposed to be better but end looking like ass.
>>
>>4024096
Nah, the entire pacing is completely different. IWD1 felt like a cozy, linear D&D journey, whereas IWD2 feels like a series of massive combat arenas.
>>
>>4024084
They're hack n slash slop from a dying company
>>
>>4024084
It was rushed out in like 6 months with no passion, no soul, no imagination, no fucking thought whatsoever beyond trash mobs thrown at you willy nilly. Bravo Sawyer!
>>
>>4024100
there was nothing that changed the way it renders backgrounds or paperdolls, they just upgraded the rule engine to 3rd edition and changed the UI, art direction was also very similar
>>4024359
baseder is a fucking hack and they obviously re-used severed hand for that reason but I actually appreciated coming back there
>>
>>4024084
>Why does Icewind Dale 2 feel so different from the first game?
Because it's vastly superior?
>>
>>4024359
It was a rushjob, but that there was no passion or soul is a retard-take.
Have you tried taking the cat with you?
>>
>>4024512
>Because it's vastly superior?
I never played IWD2. What makes it better?
>>
>>4024805
IWD2 isn’t better, unless you really love (a halfassed and janky implementation of) 3rd ed rules and absolutely hate 2nd ed rules. It does have some nice music though. Targos theme is great.
>>
>>4024084
Hud, bugs and >>4024096
>>
>>4024103
The Heart of Winter expansion for Icewind Dale got a lot of complaints for being too too short and released an extra dungeon DLC for free to make up for that. They didn't want that to happen again so they filled the sequel with combat.

Icewind Dale 2 feels like a horrible meta focused mod.

IT"S FUCKING EXCELLENT!

Really captures the the feel of the town and gets you in the head space for a grim adventure full of wonder.

It's a beautiful piece of music.

Coupled with the wonderful and evocative character portraits it really draws you in for adventure.
>>
>>4025460
It is. Iwd2 gets worse second half imo. Still great game.
>portraits
Thabk god for ai, as devs will never copy that style. Larian tried to emulate the bg2 pictures, at least the background.
>>
>>4025406
Sawyer said that since there had already been four Infinity Engine games plus three expansions it made sense to tune the difficulty up because there just wasn't much incentive for most people to want more of the same.
>>
>>4025588
>Sawyer said
This guy is a fucking hack and has no idea how to make fun games.
>>
>>4024084
It's an absolute slog up to the goblin fortress
Also the way XP is balanced, a single character will perform better than a party of six
>>
>>4024084
i need to replay it with the EE mod because my "vanilla" playthrough made it look really bad compared to modded BG2, 3e+ dnd is liquid shit and so are derivatives like pathfinder
>>
> bad
> bad
> bad
> bad
Weird because I remember nothing wrong with it. Aside from having to play the 2000s version
>>
>>4025183
fuck that place in particular
>>
>>4026659
>It's an absolute slog up to the goblin fortress
The beginning through the goblin fortress is the best part of the game.
>Also the way XP is balanced, a single character will perform better than a party of six
This is only true if you modify the xp-per-CR table to get full XP. Otherwise, your XP is scaled to the average effective character level of your party, and if you solo without modifying the table you’ll rapidly start getting little to no XP from kills due to being overleveled relative to monsters’ CR.
>>4026732
It’s not a bad game, it’s just not great.
>>
>>4026677
I like 2EE, but get ready for people to enter this thread to shit all over it.
>>
>>4027139
>I like 2EE, but get ready for people to enter this thread to shit all over it.
I would've liked it if it didn't add so much dumb shit. Modders almost never have the self-restraint to avoid fucking with stuff just because they can.
>>
>>4027224
You don't have to install all the components. The base mod by itself is mostly for stability in modern systems, widescreen, buxfixes, and quickloot.
>>
>>4027375
>You don't have to install all the components. The base mod by itself is mostly for
>mostly
I just don’t trust them to not add garbage I don’t want in the “core” version of the mod. The only feature I really cared about was area looting, anyway. Can already get the vanilla game stable and widescreen on a modern rig with a bit of (admittedly tedious) tweaking.

>Can already get the vanilla game stable and widescreen on a modern rig with a bit of (admittedly tedious) tweaking.
I was mostly able to do so, but the edges of the fog of war remained blocky, not smooth. EE took care of that for me.

How is the EE mod?
>>
>>4027224
3E is a severely flawed system. Mods do not have to obsess over the base game, and especially not a base game where most of the class roster is pointless.
>>
IWD1 vs 2?!
>>
>>4029364
1>1EE>2EE>2
>>
>>4029734
1 > 2 > 1EE > 2EE
>>
>>4029734
So the EE mod of 2 is better than Vanilla?
>>
It's an incredibly small and autistic thing but IW1 and 2 had and still have some of the best inventory/menu sounds in gaming.
That weighty fucking sword noise when picking one up and putting it down against is delightful.

the inventory item icons and character is way too small, BG1/2EE is much better
>>
Different studio
Different rule set
Different priorities
Different art style
What do you mean, it's pretty obvious why they don't feel the same
>>
>>4031425
I think so, but you should play both. Also, 2EE greatly increases difficulty if you install all the mod options.
>>
>>4031468
Any guide for what i should install and what shouldn't
>>
>>4031458
>the inventory item icons and character is way too small
It was designed for 640x480, dingus.
>>
>>4024084
global warming turned the fricking troggs gay
>>
>>4024885
i played the game a year ago, what was the extra dungeon DLC? that castle you get teleported to?
>>
>>4031793
You should read the descriptions of the mod options on their github.

>>4031825
Yes, that was Trials of the Luremaster.
>>
>>4024827
IE is just garbage in general, I get they wanted to capitalize on 3e but they really should've tried to shoot for a more modern 2e adapted specifically for the infinity engine.
>>
>>4028341
>3E is a severely flawed system.
Flawed to the point that fixing it involves banning the core classes. It did a lot of things right in terms of granularity and higher=better consistency in numbers, but the actual balance of the game is FUBAR.

>there just wasn't much incentive for most people to want more of the same.
I think most people just want to explore funny maps and find rare Axe of Kellogs Frosties that does funny thing to this boss, or that race of creatures, and have this funny extra bonus x,y,z.

That's what made Baldur's Gate 2 so cool even to those of us who never played D&D before.
>>
>>4039985
>game developer doesn’t understand what his customers want
Many such cases
>>
IWD1 is like a traditional dungeon crawl. Whereas iwd2 takes more of a leaf out of the expansion for IWD1, trials of the lure master, than it does the the base game or heart of winter. Trials of the lure master was like a puzzle dungeon crawling experiment and 2 is an expanded form of what they where trying to do there. Theres no other wrpg quite like it.

It also has a fantastic plot, whereas the original one has kinda a mediocre one.
>>
>>4024084
3rd edition mechanics coupled with the fact you don't go back to previously explored areas. You are pressing forward instead of going back to Kuldahar after an adventure.

>>4024805
Addition of skills and feats make team building more interesting, letting you customize characters even more.
Class mixing is much more lenient and class restrictions are not stupid. Thanks to these, thieves are not a burden to your team.
Storyline is more engrossing with one or two events that might actually burn into your memory unlike IWD1.
IWD2 also doesn't have a piece of garbage expansion that makes the whole experience worse (Trials of the Luremaster).

I consider the second game vastly superior as well. The first one is probably the worst RPG I've finished.
