it's fun only when you have the right situation, which is like a total of 10 minutes of the game. Magic feels super weak and lame except when you cast the nuke-tier spells, and you can only get those off in a boss fight and you hope your pawns can protect your for the 3 minutes of casting that it takes.

For me, it's Nethack. Actually good magic, enchanting, alchemy, wands, rings, spellbooks, everything.

>See item you don't need?
Polymorph it until it turns into something good or explodes. Combine weak potions until you get the ones that permanently increase health, mana, and stats. Enchant dragon scales into full dragon plate armor that doesn't interfere with spellcasting, polymorph every unneeded magic armor until it's everything you want for a godly invincible doctor doom armor set.
>Hungry?
Polymorph yourself into a person who isn't hungry. Or cast stone to flesh on a boulder
to make a giant meat boulder and eat some of it.
>About to fight some dangerous bullshit?
Polymorph yourself into a female cockatrice, lay a bunch of eggs, then throw them at enemies to turn them to stone which is basically an instant kill that nothing can resist. Or just cast finger of death on shit, who cares. Use cone of cold to cause an explosive chain reaction to delete a room of enemies, or use it to create a bridge to freeze a path across a lake. Or just case levitation, or just dig under the floor and bypass the level.

Fuck it just cast magic mapping to reveal the room, detect treasure to find the good shit, teleport straight to it, then teleport to the next staircase go to the next level and just do that. Loot the whole world in 10 minutes.

Compared to Oblivion or Morrowind I never really liked Skyrim's weapon slot magic. I think it encouraged them too much to keep the effects simple in nature. It's basically the one thing I liked more in Oblivion. Though when you say "modded" that means basically anything is on the table from effects and mechanics from previous games to bimbofication so who really knows what that means
>>
>>4029658
He means bimbofication
>>
>>4029658
I always wished I could just increase the DPS of the basic fire/lightning/frost attacks. I had a mod with a laser beam kind of like that, but it was too powerful and just one-shotted everything instantly.
>>

>>
>>4026423
That's orko from heman
>>
>>4029893
It's pretty much down to drugs or maybe one or two pieces of uniquely enchanted items if you go vanilla iirc, but it's not super dramatic. You can stun lock basically every enemy to death with magic easily by just using the dual wielding perks, but that can still take a while if you're playing on a higher difficulty. Personally I tend to revert to spamming calm spells and invisibility to not have to deal with shit outside of dragon fights when I go full caster. I don't know what the solution would even be without completely changing how the game works, but difficulty in that game is just sort of boring
Really, I don't know if it would even be wrong to be one shotting everything instantly in that game when you consider how bullshit smithing and enchanting is for damage.
>>
>>4029897
It's incredible that so many complainers are unaware of those potions.

>>
>>4029897
>>4030474

>>
>>4030711
It's not the only option
>>
>>4030713
OK autist fag maybe I didn't articulate every disappointing options.

The bottom line is that it doesn't scale anywhere close to the way melee scales.

If you're a melee character with top weapon skill and blacksmithing, you will be laying waste to enemies and in general feeling like an absolute badass in a way that just does not fucking happen with magic. It doesn't require enchanted equipment or poisons or buffing with potions to reach that level of general effectiveness, although you can also stack many of those things on top of your already fantastic melee powers if you want to. While the warrior is casually splitting heads open, one-shotting enemies right and left with his axe, an arch mage with buffs and a goofy mask whittling away the bandit's health a little bit faster than way back at level 1.
>>
>>4031088
>If you're a melee character, you will be laying waste to enemies and in general feeling like an absolute badass in a way that just does not fucking happen with magic
This is what a brainlet barbarian thinks, but it's the opposite.
>muh damage
Yes, melee does more damage. Magic has range and AoE.
That's just Destruction magic. A proper mage will also be incapacitating, crowdcontrolling and summoning and banishing daedra without taking a scratch.

Whenever someone shits on Skyrim's magic, you can be sure they're a dumb scrub whose idea of good gameplay is grinding passives until they can oneshot everything without straining their peanut brains.
>>
>>4031450
Retard. You aren't telling me anything I don't know. You can't read. The entire conplaint began with an "I wish..."

I think those basic stream attacks like flamed are fun to use. I am disappointed that you can't make them stronger. I use a comparison with blacksmithing and melee to emphasize the point.

At no time did I ever intend the criticism to apply to all magic in skyrim. Though frankly Skyrim combat does mostly suck as a whole and it's always embarrassing to see people defend it as being anything more than a way to basically play pretend like a 6 year old with his action figures.
>>
Skyrim gameplay is fine. It works. It's not really deep but desu I'm not looking for deep gameplay like dmc in an RPG. Every le epic Skyrim combat overhaul mod just turns it into extremely janky dark souls and I just wonder why people even bother at that point, prob have a better time playing kc:d
I'm looking for character building and immersion.
Which Skyrim is alright at.
Magic sucks not because it does low damage. It actually kinda fucks when you're throwing dual fireballs that like stun every other cast, and you pretty much have infinite mana with enchanted gear.
It's just the lack of spells, a lot of spell effects got turned into shouts I think because the devs wanted the player to be more in the middle than full mage or warrior.
Doesn't help that master spells have long ass cast times which make them unfun even though the energy beam lighting spell melts shit
>>
>>4031466
>I think those basic stream attacks like flamed are fun to use. I am disappointed that you can't make them stronger.
You can make them stronger, and you get the expert level wall of [element] spells with an extra component with added damage.
Your complaint is about not being able to mindlessly cruise through the game with a novice spell and grinding.
>>
>>4031470
I think the biggest problem I have with destruction magic is that in order to make it have a progression without redundant spells they spread out any real variety of spells too much. There's no reason there couldn't have been a high level version of those continuous damage spells or a low level version of the runes or whatever.
>>
>>4032124
>There's no reason there couldn't have been a high level version of those continuous damage spells or a low level version of the runes or whatever.
The reason is you get a high level version by drinking a potion. You can cast runes at novice level, but it's costs more.

If you absolutely need something to complain about: the damage of runes can't be increased. I don't know if unofficial patches touch that.
>>
>>4032163
I don't think alchemy should be the only significant way to increase spell damage other than like some perks and maybe one or two magic items (though maybe I'm thinking of mod stuff, I don't remember). Every other game has just had stronger versions of spells that cost more mana, so I don't know why you're so bent out of shape about someone seeing this as a flaw for skyrim. Obviously enchanting can trivialize the cost a bit too much, but that's a different issue than just having to click on shit too much to kill it.
>>
>>4032163
>the damage of runes can't be increased
Nevermind, I tested and potions do increase their damage. Maybe it was that the perks don't increase them.
>>
>>4032170
>other game has just had stronger versions
"but it was different before" doesn't mean shit, you would have to explain why it was better.
You could do that, and my response is that I prefer Skyrim's way of augmenting spells via perks, dual casting, potions, poisons, and equipment.
I mean look at Oblivion's pointless spell menu clutter.
>>
>>4032210
You think using potions and poisons aren't clutter? Unless you're using the white phial every day, that also means you have to add a regular cycle of harvesting shit and crafting just for basic combat. The latter means you're even going through the trouble to hit something with a weapon first. How much quick menu navigation would that be per enemy? Also I wouldn't even count equipment since it's such a non-factor in spell damage, just your ability to spam them.
This shit is why I just use pacify for most fights as a caster. At least if you get all the perks for that basically nothing outlevels the level limit for that. The only downside is quest writers clearly don't want to acknowledge the existence of that spell so you sometimes have to murder people
>>
>>4032218
>you have to add a regular cycle of harvesting shit and crafting
You can just buy (or loot) them, and I rarely feel the need to use them myself except for tougher boss fights.

Yes, this is exactly the disappointment. The point of Skyrim is to have fun, there's no meaningful challenge to the game. Having some higher level continuous damage spells would have made the game more fun.

you can roleplay the game if you imagine being the summoned hero mage units. they even have unique skills , can equip stuff and cast their own spells separate from the "Master of Magic".
>>
>>4026423
When it came out, this was amazing, there was nothing like it. I wish there was a remake, I'm sure it's dated to hell.
>>
>>4040340
Example of my favourite spell:
>Similarly to Intestinal Vaporization, Bovine Intervention can change the tide of a battle very quickly by causing the quick death of a powerful creature, and yielding Blue Souls from the death of the creature, without the need for a conversion. This results in quick acquisition of the enemy creature's souls by an enemy wizard.
> Casting Bovine Intervention results in a cow flying out of the ground, then landing and killing an enemy creature. The cow will reach a very high maximum altitude and will remain high in the air for a while, often much above the visible field of battle unless the player's view is pointed upwards, until it plummets and kills a creature. There is a similarity between the casting effects of Bovine Intervention to other James' spells, which will sometimes result in a wizard being completely oblivious to Bovine Intervention being cast. Bovine Intervention causes a small earthquake around the area in which the creature died, resulting in nearby units and wizards being knocked over - providing the perfect time frame to rush in and capture the blue souls.
>>
>>4027215

I have been wondering about this. Maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places for my wizard fantasy. Maybe RPGs are fundamentaly incapable of delivering the "powerful wizard" experience. You are basically almost always reduced to being some kind of elemental damage ranged DPS fool.

Maybe games like
>Age of Wonders 4
>Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era
>SpellForce: Conquest of Eo

are the thing I'm really looking for. But I didn't touch them so far, because I kinda dislike strategy games and the micromanagement they are always obsessed about.

Only in terms of the theater of weaving magical spells I'll agree. The spells in Dragon's Dogma are spectacular and incredible. In terms of actual gameplay however its just holding down a button, watching a bar fill, and then watching a fancy action play out, there is very little to master, very little thought, and it ends up being very repetitive.
