I keep stubbing my toe on rpg maker every time I decide to give it a shot. The latest thing to do so was finding out that leveling and certain aspects of combat and character progression (exp and stat growth) have a sort of hard-coded scale built in. Like 10 is always going to be a very small number to my understanding. Are there any good reference materials for this sort of thing? I can accept not getting to use my preferred number scale as long as I understand the numbers they have in place.

There's some unique features it can use that I haven't really heard of being used outside of Yume Nikki fangames. Larger charsets, easier implementation of custom fonts, event cloning across maps, map editing commands, unrestricted colors (though its still not visible in editor)

I for one I'm coding but using the AI as a js tutor/expert to teach me along the way, but that's only because I want to learn. I'm otherwise making everything else, from music to sprite work, because the soul comes through in all of them, and gaem is this era's opera as the most complete form of art, but I frankly don't see how the player will perceive code as part of that complete experience (other than cases where it gets in the way as bad coding) separately from mechanics or how easily your flow from node to node of the game's 'diagram'

I've finally reached the point where I need to decide what to do for the battle backgrounds in my game. I'm at a crossroad between:1) Classic style environments that fits the area. That my first choice but it would make me draw SO many pictures (at least 5-6 per main area due to some maps being inside, some on roofs, etc...) and I'm really don't have much experience at drawing backgrounds so it's daunting.2) Having some abstract kind of background like you can see in a bunch of games (OFF, Deltarune, Earthbound, etc...). Would be easier to make and much faster to implement but I have no idea how to go about doing something like this. Do you guys have some examples/references of games that pull it off well? Also I'm using 2k so I can't have animated backgrounds sadly.Which path should I follow?

Apparently, when use the [label] and [jump to label] event commands it's possible to create an invisible typo with a trailing space. >Jump to Label: "End">Label: "End ""End" =/= "End "because there's an extra character. Sturdy/Focus Sash/Endure effect checks wouldn't be impacted either way since the former only cares about "does HP == MHP?" while the latter two don't care at all when HP hits 0.The only time the values get the *100 treatment is exactly when the values are being displayed. You're already doing an HP * 100 / MHP to get a percentage for drawing bars and such, so doing it * 10000, then storing the resulting xxx.yy into v[x] and v[y] (v[x] / 100, v[y] % 100) is no extra effort.

You should look into getting the Maniacs Patch set up for 2k3 if you want a little more versatility. Okay, so I'm spaghetti-ing together a little SRPG system in RM2K, or at least seeing if it's viable. Map movement, enemies moving around, detecting collision... all going a-okay.But here's a real sticking point: rather than the classic my-one-guy-damages-you-and-your-one-guy-damages-me system a la Fire Emblem, I'm having the combat use the turn-based DBS. So you have twelve units to pick from and can divide them up however you choose into different parties (of up to four units each.) Likewise, the 'enemies' on the map represent enemy squads of one or more members. The game makes tracking damage/MP usage/status effects on the player characters between battles extremely simple. Not so much for enemies. I'm thinking of regularly running checks to update variables that track the HP/MP of every foe in each enemy party, in case they get damaged fighting one group of player characters and then start a new battle with another group later. This would also mean having every permutation of its members as enemy groups, since if one foe is killed and three others remain, that should be reflected next time you engage that particular group.Am I off my rocker here? Is there a better way to do this? Keep in mind I'm definitely sticking to RM2K's default battle system (call me a masochist) and I'm no eventing whiz but I know a thing or two. This just feels so hack-y.

RPG Maker 2003 might genuinely have the worst battle system functionality I've ever experienced in my life, even with the Maniacs Patch>Want to make an enemy gimmick where it counters the damage dealt back to whoever hurt it>Troop events all trigger at the start of an action, meaning you can't do any events after a target takes damage>Use Maniacs Patch to work around it>Still an imperfect solution since Control Battler: Damage Pop doesn't give you the ID of who dealt the damage>Control Battle: Targeting can get you this information, but isn't perfect since actors can overlap their turns before doing damage, making the information inconsistent>Trying to store this information until Damage happens would be a tedious nightmare since you'd have to keep track of every skill that's damaging just to know if the information is worth keeping>Only other solution is to force every battle to be in Wait mode so turns can't overlap>This still doesn't work if everyone uses a basic attack, since for some reason these aren't tracked properly during Targeting so you can't stop ATBs from going up and potentially cause turns to overlapThe fact the only true solution to this is to make a completely custom system out of Common Events sickens me. I have a CBS for a different project that I'm fine working with, but for this specific thing I'm complaining about, I thought I set my ambitions far back enough that I wouldn't hitting any hard walls, but I got proven wrong and I've never been more infuriated. I hadn't considered that playing an animation in battle would not only stop the ATB, but that any actions chosen during it would wait for the animation to finish playing before handling each action in sequence. This has broken open a bunch of stuff I wanted to do in my other systems, but had wrote off because the Wait command worked inconsistently with each of the Control Battle commands. This always happens as soon as I give up hope.
