This game should not have been allowed to bear the name Baldur's gate.

Don't get me wrong : it's still a solid game but story-wise Larian made very little efforts to connect it to the Baalpawn saga.
Even worse, it blatantly allows itself the luxury of ridiculizing two of the most beloved characters of the franchise.

Can we finally admit the truth?

>Can we finally admit the truth?
I’ve been saying this since the game came out.
I’ve also observed that the majority of BG3 fanboys either didn’t play, or played but disliked, the original games.
>>

I enjoyed BG3, and I think it's a worthy follow-up to BG2, but I agree that it doesn't have much of anything to do with the previous games. The connections it did have felt tacked-on and were handled poorly.

Only way BG3 could have been worse is if it had been RTwP

>Only way BG3 could have been worse is if it had been RTwP

Rtwp is just TB in disguise.
>>

I agree.
It's not even a CRPG. It's available on Playstation and Xbox. Completely going against the "C" of the genre name
>>
>>4038803
I mean that´s probably intentional so that people could just jump in without having to play 25 year old games beforehand. The decision certainly payed out for them as the game became insanely popular even with people that usually don´t play CRPGs. Not even Dragon Age Origins can claim that kind of accomplishment. You can totally tell BG3 was made to be an approachable game, it has production values no CRPG has ever had, ever, mechanics are as simplified as possible (5E) and is disconnected enough from the previous games so it can be enjoyed independently. In fact, if you don´t play the dark urge the whole baalspawn thing is rendered almost insignificant to the plot. They are just very scary mad people doing scary stuff.

It's significantly worse. I do appreciate the combat toggles and sliders in 1/2, but I would never use them because it's baldurs friggin gate and that sucks.

The only thing it has in common with Bhaalspawn Saga is it happening in vicinity of Baldur's Gate. It also lacks cohesion (especially in Act 1 that is glazed for whatever reason, but I blame it on Larian sucking at designing believeable overworlds, D:OS2 also has this problem with the clusterfuck that was Reaper's Coast) and solid ideas for plot or characters, it felt like being designed by a bunch of 12-years old kids that just crammed into campaign whatever they thought was cool. Also, I am eternally angry about long rests being broken on release despite bug being known in EA for a year or so to the point that I couldn't start Act 3 due to CTDs and just dropped it altogether.
>>
Of course it was always just a shameless cash grab. The only thing it has in common with BG are some characters.
>>
The truth is you're just supposed to play The Dark Urge, and if you didn't, you played the game wrong (and it particularly shows in act 3 if you compare it to a custom origin playthrough). The game also makes no attempt to tell you this

This. So much this.
>>
oh boys look, he said "Larian". that means he knows what he's talking about.
>>
>>4038803
I've agreed with this take since the early access era. It's very obvious that Larian just wanted to do their own thing and figured slapping "Baldur's Gate" on the cover would help it sell. They were completely correct. If it had been Divinity: Origin Sin 3, the game would not have gotten the media attention it did. Now that they have gotten their "game of the year" recognition, they can return to Divinity and rely on their studio name to sell the game. I imagine they will use the same mocap and voice acting style, which is really what drew all the accolades for BG3.
>>
>>4038803
BG3 has the most reactivity to character creation since Arcanum and for that it will always be one of my favorite games.
It's baffling that a game with so much reactivity couldn't just let you answer a quiz at character creation to answer things like "who did the Bhaalspawn romance?" Dragon Age: Inquisition even made a whole character creator to allow Hawke to show up. But apparently WOTC is incredibly autistic about Abdel Adrian which probably explains the character assassinations of Viconia and Sarevok.
>>4039599
Even if you don't like the game, "shameless cash grap" is a wild take for a game that took this much time and effort to develop and is as large and long as it is. That new Warlock game is going to be an actual cash grab.

Do you feel the same about Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance

It's the best RPG ever made, it's just sad that vrpg can't admit it

>It's the best RPG ever made
Zoom zoom spotted. It’s not even the best Larian game, much less best RPG of all time
>it's just sad that vrpg can't admit it
This board is overrun with retards who have only played two RPGs in their life and glaze BG3 as the greatest anything ever, and despite the games widespread popularity and critical acclaim, have a delusional view that they’re the small minority of tasteful connoisseurs, while the unwashed plebeian masses just don’t appreciate the beauty of a transsexual dating simulator.
>>
I'm impressed how Larian sold one of the most disgustingly woke games ever made to chuds and made them defend it.
>>
>>4042042
They're too deep into their millennial doomer arcs to stop now

The story is a complete mess
It feels complete at the end of act 2. The cult and tadpoles mysteries are revealed, it just needs a final boss and it's done. Then they remembered the name of the game and had to tack on act 3 which is just the plot from the first game.

>Do you feel the same about Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance

It basically defined the genre of console hack 'n' slash and had ground- breaking graphics and water physics for the time.

But it didn't put a "3" at the end of it's title so it's basically just a spin-off.
>>
>>4043268
I’ve never played the DA games and would buy a bundle of them for 20 bucks. The publisher actually raised the base price of the games from 30 each to 40 each (down to 30 on sale). For 20 year old console spinoff ports. Absolutely fucking delusional.
>>
>>4043355
Gotta cash in on that hoping some retard buys the wrong game money
>>
>>4038855
So, do you think that the game would've been significantly less successful if it didn't have the Baldur's Gate name? As you mention, it's a 25 year old game and it's so disconnected you can enjoy it independently.

They could've just called it Dungeons & Dragons: Rise of the Absolute or Forgotten Realms: Dawn of the Absolute, or something else.

The Dark Alliance games at least have the excuse of coming out pre-social media when it probably actually moved the needle for sales. I know I rented one of them because it had the BG name and would've ignored it otherwise.

NTA but I definitely do.
BG3 sold a ton at the initial early access, at least on par with other CRPGs. That was primarily driven by BG1 and 2 fans who were interested, rather than Divinity/Larian fans. That allowed them to reinvest the funds into the game, develop more content, and revise a lot of the visuals. It payed off in them having what is definitively the best-looking CRPG ever. Say what you will about gameplay, story, characters, etc., but the visuals and mo-cap are top tier, which is the main thing that drew in the casual players that bumped the game into GOTY territory.

I followed the game in early access, on this very board, and there was little discussion about it elsewhere on the internet outside the more ardent D&D circles. When the gameplay trailers dropped with the bear sex and other stuff, discussion fucking exploded all over the place. The visuals really captured everyone's attention, and a lot of video game streamers and reviewers started talking about it to further amp things up since everyone had to give their "take" on things. That brought in a lot of people saying shit like
>the upcoming sequel to the CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED Baldur's Gate series
so they could have more shit to talk about and speculate on how connected it would be to the previous two games.

So there were multiple stages at which the name drew people in and amplified the attention the game was getting. I doubt it would have reached that critical mass it needed at various points if it were just something like "D&D: Rise of the Absolute" (which would have been a good title).

must be tough, living with a simple mind like that and not being able to appreciate the patricians' combat system.

On the bright side, Beamdog never got to make BG3
