I see Wizardry, I see Elder Scrolls, I see oodles of various JRPGs, but naught a single Might and Magic thread...outside of Heroes III, what's ye lot's take on the series as a whole?(Pic is from one of the spin-off games, the puzzle battler one)
For me, it’s Dark Messiah
All base M&M games (except mm9) are excellent. Even the first one. They were doing proper game design shit that no one else would figure out for years. Like in MM1, you can use the keyboard to easily tab navigate through your characters. Good luck finding that anywhere else in the 1980s
MM1 also had open world and side quests ten years before anyone else did. The whole game is so well balanced and fun, I could go on forever about it
I think what sets the series apart is, they understand that a game should be fun and intentionally design for that. Combat sfx in MM1, archery in MM3, flying around like a god dropping meteors in MM6. You don’t get stuff like this in games like Bards Tale, it’s all just purely mathematical PvE. Which isn’t bad but something is missing.
>>4047012I tried to play MM1 and 2 several times now but it's too outdated even for me, loved the series from MM3 onwards though.
how do i into the series as a noob? homm3?
>>4050686Depends on what you want. The HoM&M spin-offs are strategy games; if you want RPGs, you have to go for the M&M series. M&M3 is fine as a starting point, as long as you're willing to keep a copy of the manual/guidebook open on your second screen. If you want to start with something more modern, I'd say it's a toss-up between 6 and 7.
>>4050812Do not use a guidebook zoomer. MM3 is easy

>>4046905Ooh I actually really enjoy that puzzle battle game. The other games in the series just confuse me. I remember renting one as a kid and expected either a turn based game or action rpg and it was neither. Something on the PS2 I think. Turned me off of the franchise.
>>4050968> play spin off game> “this isn’t what I expected the main series to be like”???
Are there any HoMM-likes that play more like King's Bounty? More focus on RPG elements, less focus on empire building. The early missions of both Songs of Conquest and Olden Era gave me hope before returning to the classic turn-based strategy gameplay.
tried the tutorial for the demo of Olden Era... ...feels good. and I mean, access to four of the current game's factions (out of currently six), best thing you can do currently... ...and I THINK there's hotseat gameplay?fer factions, it's just Temple, Necropolis, Dungeon, and Schism that's in the demo, with buying Early Access giving you Growth and Hive. Then again, Sseth made a video about it already, so there's that.
>>4059635ok, so Olden Era's demo does NOT have Hotseat... ...still, it's quite a bit it has.
so Ubisoft finally put in the actual version of Heroes 3 on Steam... ...only to ship it with just the launch executional file, and nothing else.Quite the derp.Problem has been fixed already.Me, I got it on GoG.
>>4055255Yeah this is what I'm looking for too.
