There was recently a huge sale on the Atelier series on Steam, anyone else pick up a shit ton of games? I bought the entire Dusk, Arland, and Ryza DX series. Playing through Firis right now, 100%'d Sophie a month ago.

>QOTT: What did Gust mean by this?

Nah, I'll pirate them
I ain't paying a cent anymore for any games until the ram crisis is solved
Assuming I will need to pirate in the first place given my massive backlog

game dev have tiny pp

Rorona port is broken, it freezes for like 2 seconds every time it has to load text because of a major programming fuckup and nobody has been able to fix it properly as of last week when I checked yet again. Sophie however works.

I picked up Alyshia (whatever the blonde girl in green was) a couple years back but just couldn't get into it at all

Good luck with Firis, I just replayed it and it's tedious as fuck, the time limit is a whatever (pretty much impossible to fail) but once you pass the exam and the game opens up it's just bumming around a massive map hoping to trigger the next character event. And you can't fit the full party in your tiny tent, so you have to swap them in and out. And you can't duplicate anything, so have fun remaking that 999 quality Velvetis that you need for your 999 quality weapon or whatever. 999q crimson stones require making an intermediate 600 or 700q crimson stone because that's the only source of high quality gunpowder, ugh. Well, at least you can use a catalyst to make 4x crimson stones at once.

Some zoomer just made a fix for the menu lag and crashes in both Arland and Dusk games, but it's AI written, so who knows if it breaks something later on, worth a try though, and he's still working on it, so you can report bugs

Does quality even affect equipment in Firis? I haven't noticed a difference so far. I definitely agree that it feels tedious, especially the proficiency shit. I think a ton of the game had to be sacrificed in order to try to force this open world thing to work and I don't think it was worth it. The story is basically non-existent and the pacing is awful. Shit just kinda happens to you and it all feels disjointed. Why is Firis just letting whatever Johnny Come Lately into her tent? Why have the only two party members that have joined me so far aside from Liana not even had proper cutscenes introducing them?

>Does quality even affect equipment in Firis?
It affects all resonance traits (you get a bit over 200% stats at 999q), plus a couple more post-exam traits like Zeal Factor and Happy Heart. Also the effects of Gunade Rings fully scale with quality, so don't make sloppy ones. Though ironically it's impossible to make a 999q Gunade Ring, so just do your best.

>The story is basically non-existent
As compared to? This is Atelier. The shitty part about Firis is that all party members except for Liane are optional, so every single cutscene is just Firis & Liane + whoever's event this is. But basically there are multiple town hubs and each has its own story arc. And then the post-exam half has a fuckton of character events (pre-exam you're limited to only 1-3 per party member) and 10+ endings. It is all non-linear though, so it feels meandering and disjointed.

Lydie & Suelle mostly goes back to the Sophie formula, no open world, permanent party members.

I know Atelier games dawg, my first was Rorona. The story of Atelier games may not be "the chosen one goes to slay the dragon" kind of shit, but they all have an overarching narrative and they all have progression that makes sense.
Everything in Firis just feels incidental. You randomly get a knock on your door from a guy you've never seen before, he gives you a key, you fix it for some reason, he joins you and Firis seems to have no qualms letting some strange man she just met sleep in the same tent as her. Heintz or whatever his name is (the characters are so forgettable I literally don't remeber his name) you literally just talk to him once and suddenly he's in your party. But not really because you have to visit an inn or tavern first. But you recruit him before you even know what an inn or tavern is. And the game doesn't tell you what an inn or tavern is when you recruit him, only when you recruit the other guy.
Overall I view the game as like Monster Hunter Wilds. They tried shoving an open world mechanic into the game and it doesn't fucking work at all. Ryza they managed to make it work for (for the most part) but that trilogy also suffered for it. Then Yumia comes out and tries to lean even harder into the open world shit and it's by far the worst Atelier game.
I'm still enjoying Firis for the most part, but you're being bad faith if you say "this is Atelier" when someone complains about its story.

Heintz and Revy are on the road to the first village, try getting a bit further. In particular, there's a lot of story in the port city (Flussheim), but apart from that, most of the story threads are in the post-exam half of the game, the game has 11 party members (not counting Firis) + about another dozen characters with additional events, but all of that opens up only after the exam.
https://www.neoseeker.com/atelier-firis/faqs/2823340-taatmj-event.html

Sophie & Plachta join the party after the exam and their story from Sophie 1 will continue, and Luard will be back too, in the form of the homunculi (Meklet & Atomina). All of this is a setup for Lydie & Suelle where their arcs will conclude (decisively, no more cliffhangers). Also, Firis is a major character in L&S and most of the events from Atelier Firis will be referenced, so try to complete as much as you can from the guide I linked above.

Atelier Firis has a lot of iffy game design, but Lydie & Suelle is arguably the best game in the series (alchemy, combat, music, story are all perfect and the MC's are brats rather than the boring goody twoshoes), so try to push through it.

I already have a shitton of Ateliers, yet I've only ever played Totori on the Vita (god knows how long ago). I love the atmosphere of the games, just finding the time to play them has been a challenge. Starting with Totori didn't help because god getting the various endings was a chore that I didn't have enough energy to complete. Wish I started with Sophie (and on a device that wasn't so criminally underclocked).

i just got atelier sophie but i have no idea what i'm doing

Just sit back and enjoy the ride, there's only one singular missable achievement and there's no time limits. Talk to your allies, explore new areas, do plenty of requests to make money and get tickets. The one singular missable achievement has to do with Monica, just pay attention and you won't miss it.

at this point, i might as well emulate the old editions...
>>
>>4064230
Technically there's another missable achievement, you need to craft a philosopher's stone before beating the final story boss (the achievement will pop during the ending sequence though, that's why it's missable, you can't rewatch the ending).
>>
>>4064599
Oh right, forgot about that.

Firis is my third-favorite game in the series behind Totori and Meruru, but those are fair complaints. Gust didn't do the greatest job of thinking through how to combine the open-ish world and mobile base with their usual character interactions and such.
>>
>>4064784
I'm not gonna do the usual 4chan shit of telling you to off yourself for your difference in opinion, to be fair I also still think there's a good game inside there somewhere. Firis herself is a very cute character with a unique backstory and motivations compared to other Atelier protagonists. I can see why people would really love it. But to go from the polished, simple fun of Sophie to the sprawling, poorly explained mess of Firis is incredibly jarring. It's like when you go from Yakuza 0 to Yakuza 1 Kiwami.
