I've been playing through this recently, and I've recruited a few characters, passes on a few more for thematic/roleplaying reasons, and I find myself wondering, why bother? If everyone learns the same weapon skills, why bother recruiting more people when I already have a bunch that I can't be bothered to use? I'm assuming there is a mechanical reason to do so and I'm either forgetting something, or just too stupid to have noticed it.
ps Five minute wait time to open a thread on a dead board!? The fuck, 4Chan, it's like you don't even WANT people to be here.

You are playing this game completely wrong.

Thanks for saying nothing of value, I guess?
>>
>>4059337
why can't you be bothered to use some of the characters you have?

I am, that's my question. What is the point in recruiting more when I (seemingly) already have everything I need? New characters don't seem to bring anything to the table that my originals can't already do, so what is the reason for recruiting? I'm sure there is one, but I don't see it.

Different stat spread, old characters run out of LP, trying new characters and gearing their voice lines

Yeah you don't need all the characters the game throws at you, but variety is nice

It's an issue the comes with the sandbox nature of a lot of the saga games. You can essentially build any character you want in mostly any way you want, but you end up sacrificing unit individuality because of that, and they all just end up being customisable meat sacks. But the benefit is being able to build your units however you want which is fun.

Scarlet is closer to Unlimited than Romancing.

I just figured there would be something down the road, maybe a mechanic I haven't unlocked or something, that would make it so you want to collect em all. Seems like there should be unique skills tied to certain characters at least. I'm enjoying the game overall, the character building was enjoyable enough, and this doesn't ruin it or anything, but it does feel alittle weak.

They all have unique roles, though roles aren't make-or-break for a character

The idea is that you play without a guide and get a slightly different set of characters on each playthrough. Not completely (it's too easy to get, say, Mirane) but it adds some variety

Alright. Are the characters this interchangable in all Saga games? I've started a few, but the only other one I made much of a dent in was the Romancing Saga 2 remake, where they not only WERE, but you were actively FORCED to swap em out regularly.

Broadly, yes. SaGa tends to go for more free-form character building and giving you lots of characters so you can make whatever team you want, and that means less of a focus on making each character unique. I don't think any SaGa goes for unique skills on every character a la FFVI, for example. And LP usually means you're heavily encouraged/forced to switch characters out over the course of the game.

Players do form favorite parties (you can save parties in SSG if you have one you particularly like) but that's more of a function of player favoritism+who sparked what. There's no benefit to catching them all, and you could try to play through the game with a minimum of characters if you wanted. Might be a fun challenge run.

Excess characters can be sent off on "missions" in towns where they'll get materials passively while you do battles.

Depends. There are entries in which there are racial growth mechanics so your humans will be different from monsters that will be different from robots.

>If everyone learns the same weapon skills, why bother recruiting more people when I already have a bunch that I can't be bothered to use?
For starters because character stats are fixed and characters have specific proficiency growth patterns as well so characters are not at all interchangeable, Ogniana can't do the same things Taria can do, Kahn can't perform the same as Lewis and so on, characters come with unique roles and prelearned techs which actually does matter because in SSG you get learning malus for your techs every time you learn something, meaning some characters are inherently set up to learn some techs more easily than others.
Secondly, recruiting new characters leads to learning new formations as well as getting new equipment so again, you're always getting something out of it, the game is specifically structured so that getting the chance to recruit somebody in the first place is an inherent reward as getting into a specific quest route, in fact main story routes specifically lead to recruiting certain characters because those characters are also linked to other story events that occur later, e.g. Urpina can only recruit Adill in a certain story route that also leads to a certain ending.
The process of recruiting characters itself also leads to story and lore content that you'd miss otherwise, a basic example of this would be Kreiza's questline where you can recruit either her or Erreich and you get different story details depending on who you end up recruiting, Kreiza also can't be recruited if you already recruited Chichi and vice versa, different main characters can also get different story recruitment sections and some characters can't recruit certain people at all, Urpina is the only one who can recruit the Black Robed Figure but she also can't recruit the Armored Princess.

Lastly, there's a cheevo tied to recruiting everyone and all characters have unique ending postcards and lines including one for the last boss.

Which entries in this series have monster and robot party members? The only one I know of is SaGa Frontier, which, coincidentally, is the only SaGa game I played.

the original SaGas 1-3 also known as FF Legend in the US

At least it's not Emerald Woke

SaGa 1-2-3, Frontier and Emerald Beyond all have racial mechanics, SaGa 1 doesn't have mechs though, SaGa 2 was the game that introduced them.
Technically RS2 sorta qualifies but the nonhumans work like humans with a couple of unique gimmicks, there's no racial mechanics like the sci-fi entries, Emerald Beyond and SaGa 3 are notable because they have various other sub-races like cyborgs or vampires.
