Do you like political, social, and/or racial commentary in your jrpgs?
>>4061146Yes, as long as it's not about the current thing, superficial hamfisted propaganda
>>4061146As long as it's not based on unresolved current events and is respecting the nuance and complexity of what it parallels, I'm completely fine with it.
>>4061159You mean like a 20 year old game predicting todays issues? OR A today-old game touching issues that have been "current" for 20 years or longer?
>>4061146No not from anything at least in the past decade after the 2015 shitshow.
>>4061203>2015 shitshow*googling 2015 rpgs*Not sure what you're referring to.
>>4061146Only as general subtext and in a context relevant to the fictional world, story and situation. For example i take no issue with FFVII vague notions regarding protecting the planet, preserving nature and overall anti corporation thing. But ok, that´s a full fantasy setting, let´s say you are playing a historical game, in that case i´d accept the addressing of the time period problematics but i wouldn´t accept a revisionist take on them. If devs choose controversial issues they need to be able to take the heat rather than cowardly force their vision of things on the players. That may be acceptable on television (ill advice as it may be) as a passive medium but games are interactive.
Generally the games that have "political, social, and/or racial commentary" are misrepresenting the issues to promote evil. So it usually detracts from their games. But in theory it could be done well and make a game better.
If it's well written, sure.
>>4061271define "evil"
>>4061238FF15 wasn't even out yet then. I vaguely remember "discourse" about the mental health of people that build their identity around a disability. Asking someone with depression to appreciate a sentiment is like tossing a ball to someone with a broken arm and expecting them to toss it back. It might not be impossible, but they probably don't want to play.
>>4061238If you're talking about GG that was more like 2013/2014. Also calm down faggot
>>4061146>political, social, and/or racial ideasYes>political, social, and/or racial commentaryNoI like political intrigue and realistic societal developments in my warring space empires. I like my medieval fantasy races to have history and conflicts with each other.I do not like having blatant 2020-era American gender/grumpf/race politics metaphors in my fiction where such things do not naturally fit and take me out of the experience with the author's one-sided preaching.
if its well written (aka not written by Amerimutts) then yes
>>4061146Yes. It makes the world more grounded, believable, and realistic. Even if it is covered from a folklore/mythological/religious perspective, it is weird that none of them ever touch the subject of race, gender, or sexuality despite a lot of irl religions making a clear cut stance on each of them. Abrahamic religions are more patriarchal and anti-lgbt whereas Buddhism is more egalitarian and open to non-heterosexual behaviours. It is weird that people don't want racial/sexual/gender politics even though those politics are extremely important enough for countries to make laws in support or opposition to them. Their issue is that it takes a left-leaning stance, but game design favors those beliefs the most. The games that cover it are more interesting than the games that don't, Arcanum and Fallout are perfect for it.
>>4061146I think it's pretty impossible to have a story without those.
>>4061146I thought I didn't care until I played Rise of the Third Power.Got into this encounter where a pirate captain and his goons have surrounded his daughter and her lover and is going to cut off the hands of the lover or worse. You have the option of walking on by or getting involved. If you get involved the daughter pleads with her father to accept the love she has for her lover and in any decent game either the pirate captain would or would not and storm off. Not here, no. The game has to make you feel stupid. So the pirate captain says no, just because he got jumped by randos doesn't mean his feelings toward the lover have changed at all, he's going to come back one day and get his revenge on you guys for meddling. Your characters get to look stupid because they take exception with being called "meddlers" but the lover who you just saved from doom affirms that you meddled. The daughter even agrees with her father right after that it wouldn't make sense for him to change his mind just because you killed his subordinates and then your characters agree that it was likely a waste of time and that you should just bounce.Just completely and utterly destroying the sense of glory one should get for trying to right a wrong. It's multiple slaps on the hand against the player, "How dare you care about this plot thread we laid out in front of you and get invested! Shame on you!"The game is an elaborate emasculation ritual. The main character's main love interest doesn't love him back and is just using him and will never see him as a lover. The dude she was with before is bi and is currently in a gay relationship, so main character male doesn't get a girl but the LGBT dude gets 2. Then the dark magic warlock dude comes out as non-binary.Like you look at the tin of the game and you think quirky, indie, anime pirate adventure and this isn't that. It is a political drama with some pirate themed elements with the pirate lead not being very pirate-y.
>>4061878it seems random, but sailors invented a language called polari. and it was a gay language that was used to communicate with other queers.
>>4061277NTA.So basically the epsteiners are kidnapping children, having sexual deviancy with children, harvesting adrenochrome from the children, eating the children, disposing the physical evidence of their awful deeds, and all in the name of Baal. These people own practically everything and are the reason why Clinton, Bush Jr. Obama, Trump pt. 1, Biden, and Trump pt. 2 have been complicit, and frankly Trump wouldn't even be able to get credit for the Epstein Files released because he called it a "democrat hoax" and helped the charge to get rid of Greene and Massie. So that just goes to show much power this cabal has. They are the primary reason why people are sick. Humans are hyper obligate carnivores, the anthropology is pretty firm on the fact that humans are apex predators. The epsteiners know this, and they don't want a healthy population to challenge them and so they flood the news and nutritional epidemiology with noise that tries to convince people to eat more fruits and vegetables to their detriment.(And that's not to say that a plant can't be medicine or can't address a nutritional deficiency or insufficiency in a pinch, after all the mammoths went extinct and humans have been improvising ever since.)They're also the reason why you crave the bad food that everyone agrees as bad. Even something as banal as white bread is designed with bliss points in mind. You become addicted to bliss points and now real food has to compete with food that is about as nutritious as a piece of cardboard, your instincts on what food is "good" and what food is "poison" is fucked due to these bliss points.(cont.)
>>4061277They're the reason why everyone is hyper-medicated. They cause all this disease and malaise which creates a bunch of symptoms that they can sell you petrochemicals to "fix," but there is no pill that fixes diabetes. The only fix for diabetes is to stop pouring so much damn sugar down the gullet. But, hey, if someone's foot is going gangrene that's a surgery! Cha-ching! Oh, and since we're not going to give diabetics the proper advice to cut out dietary carbs, they'll need more insulin, not human insulin mind you it's not potent enough, but lab insulin that's more potent to drive that blood sugar down and this is a income stream because to keep enduring this situation as it stands requires more alien insulin, for each meal even, and people gotta eat. There's even the whole Federal Reserve scheme where over the generations the cartel gets all the assets and valuables and gives you and your descendants fake-y fake paper money in exchange. Your parents were able to afford a single family home, but the goal here is for them to have all the assets, not you. And of course if your parents want all the equity that they've built up in the house... they can't sell to you, you don't have the money for it. They have to sell it to a corporation that's being run by the cabal and so they get fake-y fake money, the asset is taken and in cabal control, and unless someone gets really lucky? Wins the lotto? That asset stays an asset of the cabal, and even if someone does get lucky? Well, eventually they're going to die and that asset is going to be up for grabs for the cabal to take in exchange for some fake-y fake money probably to some descendant. We'll all own nothing. We'll all be "happy," or else. And I could go on.Just not stop lies, chicanery, and system rigging.
>>4061888So the main character is... like an ex-pirate. He's either straight or bi, and that's because he has that whole unrequited love, emasculation ritual, going on with the main love interest which is some priest lady.I guess now's the time to mention that all the characters are inspired off of World of Warcraft classes, so the main character is an ex-pirate but has a rage bar. Don't know if "priest lady" is so much a "priest" but she has shields and shit much like Power Word: Shield from WoW, so "priest." Not a pirate.Priest lady's prior main squeeze? He's a paladin. Not a pirate.Non-binary warlock is like a WoW warlock, only more of a homunculus I guess. Also not a pirate.

>>4061899>So basically the epsteiners are kidnapping children, having sexual deviancy with children, harvesting adrenochrome from the children, eating the children, disposing the physical evidence of their awful deeds, and all in the name of Baal. All of this is baseless accusations btw. Not a single thing you have said is proven or even evidenced, it is all talk from yellow journalism scam artists who tell you to take their word for it. The entire "Epstein" story is made up to distract you from real things happening in the real world, like your treasury being looted harder than ever, your resources being poisoned or snatched up and hoarded, and your freedoms being stripped line by line out of the law.
>>4062090>All of this is baseless accusations btwTick tock. Tick tock.

>>4061277I define it as: Needlessly destructive and selfish behavior that causes measurable harm to others, providing no benefit to society or community.>>4061244>vagueThere was nothing vague about it.
>>4061278This chapter was so gay. I get what they were trying to do, but they completely fucked it up. It was also way too easy for the game to think you were leaving Ignis behind, and Gladio constantly, sarcastically nagging you just made it even more unintentionally frustrating, and thus hard to take his retarded criticisms of Noctis seriously.
>>4061878>stick your nose into someone else's business>kill some people you have no personal beef with for the sake of someone you literally just bumped into>it goes poorly, you fixed nothing, and you get called out for itThat actually sounds about right. Also, how does it have anything to do with "current thing"?>Just completely and utterly destroying the sense of glory one should get for trying to right a wrong. You're not supposed to play video games for a "sense of glory". Kind of pathetic.>he's going to come back one day and get his revenge on you guys for meddling. Sounds like you may have triggered a sidequest encounter later on? Dunno why you're so mad about any of this, or how it pertains to this thread.
>>4061906It's funny that after decades and decades of media where "the hero gets the girl" has just been the standard, as soon as you get a game where the hero doesn't get the girl, it's an "emasculation ritual". You're not supposed to be this transparent about living through fictional characters, bro. You have a mental illness.
>>4062208>That actually sounds about right. If it were real life, but it isn't. And if this game were about real life, then the main character's suicide mission plan to abduct the princess would've met a quick and painful end.>Also, how does it have anything to do with "current thing"?It's been a design trend I've been noticing in "current" RPGs. From something like in Quartet where there a dozens and dozens of doors that you cannot even interact with, they're just wall texture, to even something more mainstream like in DQ11 where we have this villain sacrificing competition at the arena to juice himself up and instead of punishing evil the villain just gets an immediate redemption. So many bizarre design decisions.>You're not supposed to play video games for a "sense of glory". Kind of pathetic. It doesn't matter whether you're consciously cognizant of it or it's just hitting your subconsciousness, which it sounds like you're the latter, but yes it is.In these grand adventures, yes you are supposed to get a sense of glory.>Sounds like you may have triggered a sidequest encounter later on?Perhaps, but the dialogue does so much work undermining the investment into it, it would be way too little way too late.>Dunno why you're so mad about any of this, or how it pertains to this thread.Because in better crafted games that aren't nearly as concerned with hostile design will have someone like Link barge into someone's house, smash all the pots, get all the loot, and nobody complained about it. It was fun. These "current" RPGs don't even let you interact with the door, let alone give you a token, "It's locked," message and if they allowed you to just barge in and smash something, they'd probably have your characters arrested, meanwhile the main plot constitutes high treason to the crown and should carry immediate execution which just doesn't happen. And then you do a sidequest for fun and the suck out all the fun of it.That's how it pertains.
>>4062221No, it's not an emasculation ritual because the hero simply doesn't get the girl. Don't get me wrong, a feature of these narratives build on warrior male myth story structure is getting the girl, but it's not expressly necessary. What makes it an emasculation ritual is not only is the hero not getting the girl, but the girl is just using the main character meanwhile LGBT guy already got the girl, hit it and quit it, and is now with some other guy.>You're not supposed to be this transparent about living through fictional characters, bro. What are you talking about? The entire point of sitting down to enjoy a narrative is to go on a thrill ride. After all, this isn't free propaganda being handed to us to consume, these are being sold on the market for money. These people are expecting us to pay to "endure the drudgery" of fighting all these monsters, risking life and limb, all this crazy shit which, if you thought about it, really should come off more like a bunch of chores, but they don't.But they can easily start becoming chores if the thrill is killed.>You have a mental illness.Or you're just a midwit.
>>4062090>All of this is baseless accusations btw.The basis is the epstein files.
>>4062310None of this is in the "files" that have been confirmed to be real.
>>4062320You said that the accusations were "baseless," and that is factually incorrect, there is a base.Do we have absolute proof? No, and that's the funny thing about conspiracies: Seldom does it pan out like MK Ultra or the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments where the conspirators get revealed and the conspiracies confirmed as having happened 100%. That's because conspirators usually don't want to come clean. So if we had to wait until we had absolute proof for every conspiracy to even entertain the possibility of conspirators conspiring? Well then that puts us in a very shit situation where the conspirators doing whatever heinous shit get carte blanche until the day, if the day ever comes, we get that absolute evidence to put an end to it. This means that the conspirators get to do the maximum amount of damage to their victims before anything happens.

>>4061906Pirate isn't a hat, an eyepatch and a peg leg.Pirate is how you earn your money.Just because you use the power of god and anime, or even brute strength like a barbarian, to do it, doesn't mean you can't also be a pirate if you mainly steal wealth from others. It's like somali pirates. They all engage in piracy, but they utilize diverse classes like machete, assault rifle or even the occasional RPG to do it.
>>4062439>Pirate isn't a hat, an eyepatch and a peg leg.>Pirate is how you earn your money.>Just because you use the power of god and anime, or even brute strength like a barbarian, to do it, doesn't mean you can't also be a pirate if you mainly steal wealth from others.Yes, anon, we all know about how trope subversion works and that just because somebody initially looks like a pirate doesn't mean they're a pirate. We also know that just because somebody doesn't look like a pirate doesn't mean they aren't a pirate. We also know that there is an element of time to this in which case a person can eventually grow to become a pirate or someone else can step away from being a pirate.... none of that has anything to do with anything, anon. This anon, >>4061888, here is making the argument that the reason why the paladin LGBT character and warlock non-binary character are in the game is because of polari and a hidden language between LGBT sailors. To be honest that is quite fascinating, and I'm glad anon mentioned it.The fact remains that the paladin and warlock aren't pirates. They're not sailors either so it really doesn't counter what I was saying.Much like you're not countering much of what I'm saying either.>It's like somali pirates.>They all engage in piracy, but they utilize diverse classes like machete, assault rifle or even the occasional RPG to do it.I'd totally be down for a somali pirate RPG. That sounds neat.ROT3P isn't that.
>>4062491Maybe they're pirating magic? While others need to pray to a deity or follow an oath to use their holy powers, they instead download the powers illegally from the cloud? You wouldn't download a SMITE.Except the paladin would and does. But no one should.Fuck Hi-Rez for killing Tribes: Ascend.
>>4062500>Maybe they're pirating magic?... well... no.The basic plot is that priest lady wants to avert a war and completely out of reasonable ideas takes the suggestion of either the hero or the rogue girl he's with to do the impossible and kidnap a princess of one of the nations with the potential to get into this war. Hero and thief girl go off to do just that. They infiltrate the castle, kidnap the princess, the princess starts aiding and abetting in her own kidnapping. This all culminates into our plucky adventurers returning to priest lady, but the princess's love interest steps in and nearly murders you all. His onslaught is stayed by the princess's plea to spare their lives because she is starting to believe there are nefarious forces at work due to being exposed to the hero and his companion during this whole kidnapping thing. In spite of the princess's love interest having any legitimate reason to spare you or even consider that these rumors are true... he just stops and lets her go galavanting with hero and co.The plot stretches out much further than this, but it was at this time I was getting pretty pissed off with the game. I'm trying to figure out how to make my own game one day and so I kept going on trying to see what was working with the plot and what wasn't working and eventually I got too frustrated and put the game down.

>>4061244This. Arcanum takes place in the industrial revolution, and the industrial revolution was unironically one of the most racist periods in human history because it gave us scientific racism which made it so we had about 50 new ways to discriminate. And all of that is on display in Arcanum because it's trying to be period-accurate.

>>4062291>responding specifically to every point>>>/r/eddit>>4064927I think you missed the point. Gladio was supposed to be showing tough love. That's his entire role in Noctis' life; to be that one friend who's a bit of a hardass when you really need to get your shit together. The problem was that Noctis' shit was pretty much together. He was still doing what he was supposed to be doing. He was greiving the death of his fiancee, but not to the point that he was inconsolable or dysfunctional. It just came off as Gladio being salty that Noctis has actual emotions, while simultaneously being more emotional than Noctis. It was a concept completely fumbled by bad direction. Gladio wasn't actually supposed to seem "retarded".When the whole plot of a game is how your friends support you, making your friends seem like retarded hypocrites is bad, actually.

>>4065465This is why I can't play Tales. The message of literally every Tales game is "don't be racist" and all I can picture is a Namco office that is 100% Japanese producing this. The artificiality of it is off the charts.
>>4061146Tales of Symphonia has an anti-racism message but it's not that well-written so if you take a deeper look at it doesn't really hold up, but also it was written as a prequel to Tales of Phantasia and in Tales of Phantasia all the racism that Lloyd "stopped" in Tales of Symphonia is still alive, so it looks like Lloyd failed. The "race" that people are discriminating against are not even a real race, it's half-elves, and both the humans and the elves hate the half-elves. And you think this is about how love between different races can conquer everything or some shit but in reality every race mixer you meet is a fucking loony. The pope has an half-elf daughter and he fucking hates half-elves more than anyone else, while Genis and Raine's mother went fucking schizo and is cherishing a doll of her daughter instead of her actual daughter. The half-elves of course are actually mostly evil, kidnapping and enslaving humans. The humans and the elves also hate each other but they happily live separately from each other and don't interact, so it's still peaceful between them. In the ending the majority of the half-elves literally leave on another planet and things are peaceful (half-elves are tolerated because there's barely any of them left, elves still leave isolated.)In Tales of Phantasia the elves are still living in isolation and the half-elves are still being discriminated against. Not only that but the half-elves who left for their own planet waged a war against each other and the war was so terrible that it depleted all their planet's mana, so one of them comes back to the other planet (the one with humans and elves) to get some mana from them, and he ends up causing another war and he's the main villain of the game.Around half-elves, watch yourselves.
>>4065974the racism is even dumber because iirc there are no elves in Sylvarant at all. So you have this entire world that is racist against "half-elves" but no one has ever seen an elf ever and apparently no one questions how half elves can even exist. Also Raine and Genis claim to be elves to hide their real race and blend in but they would be the only elves anyone has ever met.
>>4065944I agree with you that there should be hard legal accountability of some form in deep fakes that are used to cause damages against another person.Unfortunately, that's bare minimum not happening any time soon and is likely never to happen because the same Baal worshipers that are busy harvesting adrenochrome from children are the ones trying to set all this crap up in the first instance. I mean, crap man, if they can fill a guy's hard drive with CP to find an excuse to lock someone up for life, they're absolutely going to use gens to destroy peoples' lives--probably starting with the most vocal dissidents.... we're in for some really dark times to come, and there seems to be no breaks on the shitshow. >>4065974I understand why humans don't like them, because it's terrifying to see your daughter stay young as you grow old and thus is a reminder of your mortality, but I don't remember why elves don't like them, if a reason is ever said.
>>4067186They see them as possessing impure blood, also because of what Mithos did back in the day.
>>4065974Half-elves aren't discriminated against by humans in Phantasia, they blend into human society pretty seamlessly and people seem to forget this but Dhaos being a half-elf was meant to be a twist in the story.
>>4067228Mithos is a half elf. Kratos was the only human companion.
>>4067186Because half-evles are better at using magic, making the elves jealous and calls them impure to hide their seeth.
>>4065974I'm amazed someone can misread the game so much. The game is very explicit in how the racism developed>Elves hold a 4000 year old grudge over half-elves because a handful of them betrayed the world>They also kinda hate humans for being power hungry fucks and think it's best to just ignore them>Many humans hate both elves and especially half-elves by being indoctrinated since childhood (see Zelos) and because they're just different (pope)>Half-elves hold incredible resentment towards both groups for being hated for no reason (Genis), so they lash back out againIt's actually a pretty good example of racism bad, because it shows you how the hate is generated and hard to overcome since people going against it are seen as exception. There's way worse out there. Like fucking Arise preaching racism bad after 300 years of slavery lmaoBut yes, Phantasia showing that the hate is still going, especially for the fuckhead elves of Heimdall, is hilarious. >>4061146I'm fine with them being in games in general. I just saw Aden say he was more of a "genderless lichspawn" let that burn into my eyeballs for about 2 to 5 minutes and just saved and turned the game off.I was all like, "Why? Why am I bothering?"I'm not really interested in a sequel to the game. The plot basically played all it's cards, but I am glad I did finish it.Thanks guys for pushing me to complete something.
>>4061146Only if they aren't crap like Arise
>>4061146Yeah, all art is political in a sense, but vidya doesn't need to be hamfisted with its messaging all the time. gamers can handle subtly and nuance
>>4061146Hold on, is snake eyes racist for white people because they have open eyes like a snake? Or is it like snake-kin racism
>>4081888Snake eyes are "race traitors". They report other slaves to their masters as secret police.I wouldn't compare it to a real world race beyond "crabs in a bucket". Everyone holding each other down so nobody can thrive. Nobody prospers because everyone is out to exploit everyone else.
>>4065304based
>>4082182Crabs, you see that behavior. But snakes?
>>4061146almost every Tales game has a message about racism in some way, but it never feels egregious or out of place in the world
>>4061146Yes of course, that's essentially what sci-fi and fantasy were invented for.
>>4082182>They report other slaves to their masters as secret police.>I wouldn't compare it to a real world raceIs soviet russian a race?
>>4061146Is Tales of Arise any good?
>>4084210Most talesfags hate it. I thought it was pretty good. The DLC is dogshit though.
>>4084217I don't usually like Tales games because of the writing. What do they not like about it?
>>4084228I honestly don't remember any specifics, just "Characters bad" "Combat bad" "Story bad" and the one specific I do remember is "No multiplayer".
>>4061244Fantastic post.
What's next for the series?
>>4084210Yes
>>4084228the combat is a departure from the last 20 years of 3D Tales combat, and Bamco were open about the fact that it started as a unique IP and the project was changed to a Tales game halfway throughMost of the complaints about the second part are retarded, the characters and general writing are on par with the average Tales game
>>4084210I liked it. I enjoy Symphonia, Vesperia, Phantasia, and Abyss. I didn't like Zestiria or Berseria much.I thought Arise had a likeable protagonist that has the same traditionally-masculine and go-getter attitude as the guys from the games I said I liked. In terms of "social commentary", Arise is also fairly straight-forward. There's a slave class trying to rise up and you help them. There's a twist revealed later about the main dude's backstory (which is in some ways fairly obvious), that complicates it somewhat, but it overall just sticks to the theme. Didn't ever play the DLC.
>>4061146>If it's an old jrpg:No, because it's most likely a case of trannyslation.>If it's new jrpg:No, because it's obviously funded by BlackRock.
>>4084210It was my first Tales game and I'd say it's alright.Music and visuals are great. Very good looking environment and special effects, in a braindead, flashy pictures sort of way.Combat is above average. The control scheme is awkward, but you get used to it. Bunch of fun moves and the playable characters have distinct styles. But lack of enemy variety really drags it down. Story and characters are functional but have nothing really standing out. The most noteworthy thing is that one of the slave lords tries to be a good ruler to his people and lets go of power to join your party. But it's all very surface level, even with the timeskip expansion story. You will see every twist coming miles ahead.A lot of systems are just not really there, but only fakes of those systems? You can collect outfits for characters, but those are just palette swaps of story outfits. There's different weapons and armor, but they're just numerical upgrades with different elements. But you're so restricted in how you acquire them that there's just one linear upgrade after fixed story checkpoints. Consequently exploration sucks because the game has nothing for you to find.Endgame content exists but it was too boring for me to try. It's the usual fair where the game ends around lvl 40 and then there is one single new boss every 15 levels or so and you're expected to get there somehow. The have what looks like simple cosmetic DLCs for swimsuits and whatnot that actually contain new skills, that was bullshit.
>>4087704>Bunch of fun moves and the playable characters have distinct styles. That impressed me. I bought the game thinking I would just do a quick playthrough, but I ended up really getting into it and learning how to play all the characters, did the side content. Switching between characters on the fly helped keep the combat fresh. Exceptionally good game.
>>4065951This, sometimes it's okay to be a racist prick if the person who fucked your people over so hard they can't stand up anymore and the legitimate answer is to smash their shit before they go and no, it's not secretly being subverted
