Yes. It makes the world more grounded, believable, and realistic. Even if it is covered from a folklore/mythological/religious perspective, it is weird that none of them ever touch the subject of race, gender, or sexuality despite a lot of irl religions making a clear cut stance on each of them. Abrahamic religions are more patriarchal and anti-lgbt whereas Buddhism is more egalitarian and open to non-heterosexual behaviours.

It is weird that people don't want racial/sexual/gender politics even though those politics are extremely important enough for countries to make laws in support or opposition to them. Their issue is that it takes a left-leaning stance, but game design favors those beliefs the most.

The games that cover it are more interesting than the games that don't, Arcanum and Fallout are perfect for it.

Got into this encounter where a pirate captain and his goons have surrounded his daughter and her lover and is going to cut off the hands of the lover or worse. You have the option of walking on by or getting involved. If you get involved the daughter pleads with her father to accept the love she has for her lover and in any decent game either the pirate captain would or would not and storm off. Not here, no. The game has to make you feel stupid. So the pirate captain says no, just because he got jumped by randos doesn't mean his feelings toward the lover have changed at all, he's going to come back one day and get his revenge on you guys for meddling. Your characters get to look stupid because they take exception with being called "meddlers" but the lover who you just saved from doom affirms that you meddled. The daughter even agrees with her father right after that it wouldn't make sense for him to change his mind just because you killed his subordinates and then your characters agree that it was likely a waste of time and that you should just bounce.

Just completely and utterly destroying the sense of glory one should get for trying to right a wrong. It's multiple slaps on the hand against the player, "How dare you care about this plot thread we laid out in front of you and get invested! Shame on you!"

The game is an elaborate emasculation ritual. The main character's main love interest doesn't love him back and is just using him and will never see him as a lover. The dude she was with before is bi and is currently in a gay relationship, so main character male doesn't get a girl but the LGBT dude gets 2. Then the dark magic warlock dude comes out as non-binary.


Like you look at the tin of the game and you think quirky, indie, anime pirate adventure and this isn't that. It is a political drama with some pirate themed elements with the pirate lead not being very pirate-y.

It's been a design trend I've been noticing in "current" RPGs. From something like in Quartet where there a dozens and dozens of doors that you cannot even interact with, they're just wall texture, to even something more mainstream like in DQ11 where we have this villain sacrificing competition at the arena to juice himself up and instead of punishing evil the villain just gets an immediate redemption.

The basic plot is that priest lady wants to avert a war and completely out of reasonable ideas takes the suggestion of either the hero or the rogue girl he's with to do the impossible and kidnap a princess of one of the nations with the potential to get into this war. Hero and thief girl go off to do just that. They infiltrate the castle, kidnap the princess, the princess starts aiding and abetting in her own kidnapping. This all culminates into our plucky adventurers returning to priest lady, but the princess's love interest steps in and nearly murders you all. His onslaught is stayed by the princess's plea to spare their lives because she is starting to believe there are nefarious forces at work due to being exposed to the hero and his companion during this whole kidnapping thing.

In spite of the princess's love interest having any legitimate reason to spare you or even consider that these rumors are true... he just stops and lets her go galavanting with hero and co.

The plot stretches out much further than this, but it was at this time I was getting pretty pissed off with the game. I'm trying to figure out how to make my own game one day and so I kept going on trying to see what was working with the plot and what wasn't working and eventually I got too frustrated and put the game down.

That's his entire role in Noctis' life; to be that one friend who's a bit of a hardass when you really need to get your shit together. The problem was that Noctis' shit was pretty much together. He was still doing what he was supposed to be doing. He was greiving the death of his fiancee, but not to the point that he was inconsolable or dysfunctional. FM2 has you aiding a local mafia organization in order to destabilize a local independence movement and you even kill the protagonist from the first game in an optional side mission, where he is depicted as a bloodthirsty terrorist retard.

It's hard to care about the story and the combat system is too bad for me to ignore it. An SRPG where the skills are RNG and they try to "solve" the problem with infinite mid-mission saves. It's anti-strategy.

Okay, so I beat the game, did all the sidequests, beat the 4 superbosses, and saw the statues in the back of Telindra. I admit the game's plot was better than I thought. In that first playthrough I was about 5 minutes away from the pirate attack of Angelico when I quit--so I didn't get a chance to speak to Brooke there in Angelico 4 years ago. I just saw Aden say he was more of a "genderless lichspawn" let that burn into my eyeballs for about 2 to 5 minutes and just saved and turned the game off.

I was all like, "Why? Why am I bothering?"

I'm not really interested in a sequel to the game. The plot basically played all it's cards, but I am glad I did finish it.

I liked it. I enjoy Symphonia, Vesperia, Phantasia, and Abyss. I didn't like Zestiria or Berseria much.

I thought Arise had a likeable protagonist that has the same traditionally-masculine and go-getter attitude as the guys from the games I said I liked. In terms of "social commentary", Arise is also fairly straight-forward. There's a slave class trying to rise up and you help them. There's a twist revealed later about the main dude's backstory (which is in some ways fairly obvious), that complicates it somewhat, but it overall just sticks to the theme. Didn't ever play the DLC.

It was my first Tales game and I'd say it's alright.

Music and visuals are great. Very good looking environment and special effects, in a braindead, flashy pictures sort of way.
Combat is above average. The control scheme is awkward, but you get used to it. Bunch of fun moves and the playable characters have distinct styles. But lack of enemy variety really drags it down.
Story and characters are functional but have nothing really standing out. The most noteworthy thing is that one of the slave lords tries to be a good ruler to his people and lets go of power to join your party. But it's all very surface level, even with the timeskip expansion story. You will see every twist coming miles ahead.

A lot of systems are just not really there, but only fakes of those systems? You can collect outfits for characters, but those are just palette swaps of story outfits. There's different weapons and armor, but they're just numerical upgrades with different elements. But you're so restricted in how you acquire them that there's just one linear upgrade after fixed story checkpoints. Consequently exploration sucks because the game has nothing for you to find.
Endgame content exists but it was too boring for me to try. It's the usual fair where the game ends around lvl 40 and then there is one single new boss every 15 levels or so and you're expected to get there somehow.

The have what looks like simple cosmetic DLCs for swimsuits and whatnot that actually contain new skills, that was bullshit.

That impressed me. I bought the game thinking I would just do a quick playthrough, but I ended up really getting into it and learning how to play all the characters, did the side content. Switching between characters on the fly helped keep the combat fresh. Exceptionally good game.
