The best ARPG on the market, Grim Dawn. No more /v/ threads are allowed.
>>
It's definitely in the top three, with Diablo and Diablo II. Certainly the best one in the last couple of decades.
>>

It's getting banned from /v/ now?

Last thread got autosaged and I got a warning for "making generals".
>>
>>4061647
Well that's fucking retarded when it's a new release getting active support. Not like the threads were going to last so long naturally.

Anyways I got an entire ice king set dropped from a single session while trying to farm for something else. Time to ruin my Chaos Werewolf.

Oh no the horror

Anyone else just steering clear of Loxmere when doing Valbury?
This bastard constantly one- or twoshots my grenade chucker.
Whenever I encounter him escape is top priority.
I'll dash through a horde of enemies, elites and other bosses just to get away from him.

4-player coop and Diablo-2-hell-sized dungeons in normal mode.

thats so depressing considering how boring this grindslop gets
you need to be clinically retarded to not be sick of it within 30 minutes.
>>
I want to like grim dawn but the active skills are just so boring compared to Path of Exile 1. Monster infrequents are such an excellent concept, I love items in the game, but there aren't any characters I want to play.

The problem with Grimdank is the same problem all isometric arpgs face: they need to fucking slow the combat down and make different skills have different tactical uses so that there's a reason to give a fuck about positioning, resource management and decisions. Encounters need to be meaningful, not numerous. They need to be tactical, not spammy. They need to be positional, not mindless. They need to be distinct, not just identical mooks zombie-walking toward you constantly. Skills / abilities need to work differently and have different use cases, there should not just be one best spell that you bind to your right mouse button and you only spam that one button.
Arpgfags just don't want to hear this.

We need a Dark Souls of ARPGs.
No Rest For The Wicked goes into that direction, but from what I've seen, it goes too much into that direction.

I guess the best way would be twin stick controls. Then directional combat (as in attacks from different direction behave differently) with bigger enemies having actual weakspots you need to exploit.
Maybe the body part armor and damage system of Phoenix Point, where instead of trying to just beat your way through the enemies health pool you instead can damage and disable individual body parts for a permanent debuff on the boss.
Something simple would be disabling the legs, where the enemy now moves slower, maybe can't use leap and dash attacks any more, and receives bigger damage from ground effects like fire or poison pools.
Slow the action way down. Movement can stay fast and snappy but make the game more about using different skills for different situations.
Like, enemy has a weak spot behind him?
As a fighter you just get in there, circle the enemy and attack him from behind.
A caster on the other hand would need to use delayed spells or spells that are triggered by other mechanism, to hit the enemy in the back.

I like Grim Dawn and the gameplay, but I still dislike that kind of gameplay where you choose 2 or 3 skills, buff them as much as possible and then spam them in every situation.

Dark Souls is the ultimate example of hyper-focusing on the single most powerful attack available to you. Defense consists of just spamming the same retarded-looking dodge roll and there's absolutely no other interaction the game even allows. The Souls / Bloodborne / Elden Ring games are very seriously among the absolute worst video games ever made of any genre. Ever.
I'm stone cold serious. Those games fucking suck. Fucking Pong literally has more nuanced gameplay.

When someone talks about "The Dark Souls of X" they don't usually mean the gameplay, but the pacing and scale.

Far fewer but harder enemies, slower fights, more about positioning and resource/stamina management.

Move away from Dynasty Warriors towards Dark Souls to arrive at Nioh.
But no one says "The Nioh of X".

It's the opposite, whenever I play Grim Dawn I'm reminded that PoE is faster, has higher enemy counts, has many one button builds that are viable etc. Grim Dawn has a lot of good points like gear and not having purposeful annoyances to sell microtransactions but PoE's gameplay is just better

Shadows: Awakening is what you want.
>>
>>4062688
Dynasty Warriors was best when you had to pay attention to the tactical map a bit and not just spam one button till musou.

I'd like an arpg with more going on than spam, like exploration and conversations too. Honestly D4 isn't that bad in this regard but it still becomes repetitive too. Group co-op and classes, something not completely casual to have fun in but not as sweaty as an mmo or korean grinder arpg.

>Defense consists of just spamming the same retarded-looking dodge roll and there's absolutely no other interaction the game even allows
Usually you're better off just running out of the way. People just spam the dodge roll because they're retards.

>When someone talks about "The Dark Souls of X" they don't usually mean the gameplay, but the pacing and scale.
So.... they actually don't like the gameplay, then. They want a novel.
Novels are not games. They are not games, I don't know how to say it any more simply than that, I'm sort of actually flabbergasted here. Like. If you don't like video games, that's ok, dude. Just don't play video games. Read a book. Oh my fucking god. There are so many books. Go read them.
But for people to gush over FecesSoft like that is, on the one hand, great for me because at least they announce themselves so I can just instantly avoid them. They don't even wait. Those games are just the first and only things they ever talk about. But on the other hand, since they're such rabid morons and easily manipulated by marketing, they have become a strong influence on video game design due to sheer market share.

Just like how free-to-play-with-mtx mobile games have a huge influence. Is fucking CANDY CRUSH a great example of video game design?

What's the difference between a Skinner Box... and literally anything you might do for joy? I'm sure people here have seen that meme of the crowd of geriatrics just mindlessly tapping the button on the gambling machines in the casino... We have to ask ourselves if THAT is the pinnacle of game design.

What's the point of games? What's the point of art? Because if it's just to lure as many rubes as possible to pay as much money as possible... why even bother with the pretense of any of the rest? Why are we here pretending there is such a thing as quality or beauty or meaning at fucking all??
