Wanna share a little known RPG you loved with others? Post about obscure RPGs here so others can discover them!

My submission is CHRONICLES OF RADIA WAR on Famicom.

Tecmo dropped this fucking banger in '91 and it got left behind in Japan because the West was transitioning to 16-bit. A English localization was actually almost finished before it was scrapped. It abandons turn-based battle for real-time action combat with zero random encounters. You actually see enemies on the field, walk up, and beat their ass. You get a full 4-man party with on-the-fly tactical AI commands—tell your party to back off, focus fire, or heal while you tear shit up.

The late-era Tecmo anime cutscenes done ala Ninja Gaiden look incredible for 8-bit hardware and the story actually has momentum. Check out this cool anime TV commercial from Japan:

Is it perfect? No. The difficulty drops off a cliff in the second half, the gear customization is pretty basic, and the fan translation is a little rough around the edges. But the pacing is fast as hell and it puts many western-released NES RPGs to shame.

Get the fully patched English ROM here:

This game looks like garbage, but I can appreciate the fact that it is also complete shit.

Definetively heard of Radia before but never bothered looking up, it does sounds fun to play tho
One that might not be really that obscure since people have played it quite a bit on YouTube but still pretty niche and relatively unknown is G.o.D. (Growth or Devolution)
Its a rather wacky scifi jrpg about a group of characters awakening to pyschic powers in a post-apocalyptic modern-day world, it gets weird fast and I love it for it

Only the PS1 Saiyuki will ever be "it" for me in terms of video games that seek to tell and put their own spin on Journey to the West.

idea no hi
kind of glad it'll never be translated because westoids would hate it for its clunky equipment system and its handful of transphobic moments

Can we please not have another thread derailed by off-topic debate about trannies?

Would the totally unoriginal "crossdress to gain access to gender-exclusive areas" thing really cause so much of a fuss? Sure, the game is pretty crass, but the sexism is depicted as strictly negative. There's more to take offense with when Judd slaps the shit out of his girlfriend than in the entire warring same-sex cities arc.

>presented with an objective truth
>mind instantly goes to male sex acts
Makes sense that only a closeted fag could enjoy this unplayable shit. Kill yourself, nigger.

Zzboyd games, all of them.
They pay homage to the classic SNES era with some modern QoL updates, like making the grindy combat completely voluntary
Breath of Death 7 is a DQ1 homage, basically a tech demo, but it's fun and funny and only about 2 hours long.
Cthulu Saves the World, the title alone tells you everything you need to know, and it's based around FF4/6 style play. Also has a sequel called Cthulu Saves Christmas.
Cosmic Star Heroine is sort of Chrono Trigger-meets-Phantasy Star hybrid, a really unique combat system that is enjoyable once you get used to it.
The lastest is What Madness Lies Beneath, which is "What if Shakespear wrote Sailor Moon fanfic?" and it's fucking awesome.

Each game is bigger than the last, and they're dirt cheap. No I'm not the dev or anything, I'll happily plug these games for free, I've played the hell out of each of them. CSH and What Madness Lies Beneath have a surprising amount of depth to them.

Zzboyd is not a obscure dev, his games even has a fan translations onto my language.

>No I'm not the dev or anything
Well i hope soo. Shilling your games on such a dead-ass board is a really pathetic activity.
>>
Speaking of shills, is anyone remember that guy who tried to advertise his snes/nes-styled jrpg out there? Never had a spare time to play it and didn't bother to remember the name, but I'm in a mood for some retroslop right now.
>>
>>4078003
Hi Robert Boyd, no I'm not playing your shitty games.
Don't you post regularly on resetera? Go shill there.

>>

some various retroslop I have seen shilled on here, either overtly or covertly by devs:
the secret of varonis
dream warrior
scarmonde
I want to say false skies was too but I am less sure
shilled frequently enough that I suspect the dev is doing it:
skald
every zeboyd game

I own a boxed copy of Corum III, the only boxed commercial RPG ever made for BeOS. It's Korean and no, they never did Corum or Corum II into English. It's not that much fun. But I was running BeOS back in the day so I bought it.

Seconding these games. They're older than a lot of current posters, even.

Then again, that was awhile back
