Vyse is the best JRPG protagonist.
He was kind of a hothead, especially in the C route, also this is now a Tactic Ogre thread

>>4066282>entire character is localizer fanfiction>in a game where the entire story is localizer fanfictionYou don't even know what kind of a character Vyse is.
>>4066350>localizer fanfictionThat's every localized game though.
>>4066282Truth
>>4066282Someday we'll get that perfect SoA version with Gamecube additions, and the Dreamcast soundtrack.Right? And yes Vyse is the perfect protagonist.
>>4066282I honestly don't know how he didn't rape Fina when he had her cornered on his own ship in the middle of the sky with no escape. He's a better man than me I guess.
>>4066558He’s the kind of guy who gets two marshmallows.Unlike your plastic-poisoned brain.
I fucking kneel, Vyse is a chadI played Skies of Arcadia a few years back and I was blown away by the qualityVyse walked so Rex could pick up where he left off
>>4066350>zoomer weebs still seething
>>4066350>entire character is localizer fanfictionAmazing that people still say this. The japanese script was combed over, if anything the localization was overly literal and seemed to almost refuse to take liberties.
>>4075737>the localization was overly literal and seemed to almost refuse to take liberties. As it should be.
>>4075741To me being literal or not is less important than actually following directorial intent. FFXII does not have a literal translation in the slightest, it's super flowery. But it's also how Matsuno explicitly wanted it to sound in English, down to shit like the Occuria speaking in iambic tetrameter for all their lines, with the rogue Venat speaking in iambic pentameter (which I must say, was probably an absolute BITCH for the localizers to do, rewriting every line to fit that rhythmic structure)
>>4066410>>4075029>>4075737>>4075741>>4075747Uh huh
>>4075758You may not like it, but that’s what peak translation performance looks like
>>4066282He's pretty good. His biggest flaw, though, is that he has no flaws. He's got all the persistence and passion of a generic, silent protagonist, but without actually being silent. He's a complete, unchanging archetype from the very start of the game to the very end. I'm not saying those things can't be hallmarks of a good character, but it does make him feel a bit shallow by comparison, even to some of his own party members. For my money, I'd lobby for Bartz from FF5. He's got that same sort of eternally optimistic "never say die" attitude, but he has fears and vulnerabilities he works through to become a better hero and better family to his friends by the end of the game. He's suffered loss, and we've seen how it affected him, and then we see how he recovers from it. It makes him a much more compelling character, imo.
>>4075758Yeah you probably should look into that, they didn't literally throw away and make up an entirely new script, he is straight up lying when saying that, It's still like 95% the same and you can tell that with a machine-translated japanese version, what they actually did was a lot of ad libbing instead of being direct, but it's still following the same story with the same characters....mostly. Vyse is actually really similar to how he is in japanese, but Aika was almost completely changed as a character in english and before she was seen as very generic.
I'd have to give it to Stocke personally.
>>4077108>falling for the baitanon either doesn't know or doesn't care about the truth. Localization is just an eternal "flavor of the month" for video game discourse, and there's basically nothing else to shitpost about when it comes to Skies of Arcadia, so faggots and retards have latched onto "muh localizer fanfiction"
>>4076024Its a very modern and pretentious idea that the only good character is one with 'development', who needs to learn and change by the end of the story. Vyse calls back to classic pulp heroes like Conan who are unchanging and their 'flaws' are not something that the story needs to fix but rather add flavor to the situations they are in, which are the real point of the story. Complete characters, or "archetypes" are just as valid and enjoyable.
>>4079464>Vyse calls back to classic pulp heroes like Conan who are unchanging and their 'flaws' are not something that the story needs to fix but rather add flavor to the situations they are inExcept that doesn't apply to Vyse at all. My complaint wasn't that Vyse didn't change; in fact I even stated myself that's a valid character archetype. If he'd had some kind of "flaw" that added "flavor" to the situations he was in, then yeah, that would have made him more interesting. It's too bad they didn't do that, though.
>>4080166Not every character needs a flaw. You're too used to subversive media.
>>4080603Nta but is pretty much all storytelling going back to the ancient world "subversive media"? The hero undone by his fatal flaw that will inevitably bring about his downfall but is so inexorably tied to who he is that he stops being him without it, is a staple of Greek tragedies. Hell Gilgamesh, the first real hero, is destroyed by his own arrogance.Just be honest and admit you like when characters act cool instead of intellectualizing about a subject you know hilariously little of.
>>4080603It’s a midwit approach to writing.
>>4080875>>4080882Ideal heroes have existed since the beginning of time. What was Perseus' flaw? What was Beowulf's flaw? What were Arthur and Galahad's flaws?
>>4080906>What was Perseus' flaw?Arguably being overly impulsive and rash, which is what gets him into the job of killing Medusa in the first place. But it's minor, Perseus doesn't really have major flaws. He did kill his grandpa (by complete accident), and felt shame over it. Which isn't really a flaw, but it's something more than Perseus having no internal issues.>Beowulf's?Excessive pride leading to him dying by attempting to face the dragon alone, leaving his nation vulnerable without him. He's overwhelmingly virtuous, but you can certainly read his final decision that way. Especially considering King Hrothgar warns him earlier >Do not give way to pride>For a brief while your strength is in bloom>but it fades quickly; and soon there will follow>illness or the sword to lay you low >Arthur and Galahad's flaws?Galahad is basically the perfect knight, so you'd have to stretch it to claim anything. Even then, it would be some variation of "too perfect" or "too detached." But that's not a flaw in the story itself.King Arthur though had flaws and made a fair number of errors when it came to managing his knights and kingdom. He handled the affair between Lancelot and Guinevere poorly, which ultimately tore the kingdom apart. He was overly trusting of Lancelot and Mordred, repeatedly deceived by Morgan le Fay, things like that.Either way, I'm just nitpicking your point. Idealized heroes without major flaws exist and can be good characters. The difference might be in showing those ideal heroes sticking to their virtuous nature despite pressure to betray it. Even Christ was tempted in the desert.
>>4066282Respectfully disagree.
>>4081013>Even Christ was tempted in the desert.Satan tried to tempt him, but Jesus just told him to buzz off. That isn't really pressure.
>>4080906this nigga seriously asked what Arthur's flaw was when his downfall was brought about by the EXACT same problem his dad had: he quite literally could not keep it in his pants to save his life
>>4081188You're thinking of Lancelot. Arthur's only flaw was listening to Mordred, which is barely a flaw.
>>4081203No Arthur had a problem with getting his dick wet too. You're also forgetting you know, how Mordred came to be>inb4 he was bewitched!
>>4081208Mordred was Arthur's nephew in the original myths, him being his son was only in the later versions of the story.
>>4066283I still can’t get over the fact that the best/canon ending requires you to massacre a bunch of civilians for a false flag op
>>4081594Days without anti-Semitism on /vrpg/: 0
>>4081522>him being his son was only in the later versions of the story.Yeah you know what else was? Fucking Lancelot, so using Lancelot at all in conversation, as we have, means we're accepting Chrétien de Troyes' version of the story as effectively the definitive one.
>>4081680how is the term "false flag" anti-Semitism?Its like saying "motivated" and being branded as a DMC fan
>>4080603>Not every character needs a flaw.Never said they did. But Vyse's problem is that his lack of flaws makes him seem boring compared to his own supporting cast, simply because he's not written very well. Yes, you COULD write a good character with no flaws. But sadly, that's not Vyse.Damn you guys are dumb.>>4081093This is a real patrician choice, right here.
>>4085485>But Vyse's problem is that his lack of flaws makes him seem boring compared to his own supporting cast, simply because he's not written very well.He is written well, he's a hero who overcomes any obstacles in his way. Even when his pirate fort is destroyed he just shrugs and says "No big deal, we'll just build another one." He has a confident, cheerful personality without being an overconfident idiot like some JRPG protagonists. If Vyse was a mopey faggot with flaws the game would be worse for it, it's like giving Conan the Barbarian flaws, it would ruin what makes him fun.
>>4080875>The hero undone by his fatal flaw that will inevitably bring about his downfall but is so inexorably tied to who he is that he stops being him without it, is a staple of Greek tragedies. That's why the archetype is called "tragic hero", numbnuts. Not all heroes are supposed to be like that.
>>4085505>it's like giving Conan the Barbarian flaws...but he has flaws. He's hotheaded, his amoral pragmatism means he often makes morally bad choices that bite him down the line, he has this tendency to suddenly break down into melancholic fits about nature, etc. Have you ever read the actual Howard books or did you just see the movie?

>>4094616And yet time and again he screws himself over in some way due to how he views everything as transactional and how he's actually quite greedy>gets locked in a cosmic horror trap in The Tower of the Elephant due to his greed and only gets out because he (temporarily) learns to help someone else for its own sake>is betrayed and ends up with nothing to show for it at the end in The Black Stranger because he keeps double-crossing people>nearly dies in The Frost-Giant's Daughter because he wants to rape a chickConan becomes a beloved king BECAUSE in later books he realized the way he used to act kept fucking him over and wasn't the way someone who has responsibility should conduct himself. Beyond the Black River lets him see where endless pragmatism gets you as he watches a civilization be destroyed which allows him to understand that self-interest only gets you so far and you have to tame your worse aspects.
>>4096737The XCEED translation is great, bro. Would you rather have the endless "ha ha" we got in comparable moments from Cold Steel? I get not wanting modern localizer BS, but I feel like, in this case, XCEED improved on the original script's shortcomings, to the point the characterization got back-ported into Falcom's later games.
>>4097372>nearly dies in The Frost-Giant's Daughter because he wants to rape a chickHe was obviously being mind-controlled by the goddess so her brothers could ambush him.
>>4096640>the character that westoids only like because xsneed turned her into a quirk chungus>best protaglol, lmao even
>>4097933Quit LARPing, you know you've been a fan of something that's been localized or translated. It's justifiable to hate on the MODERN groups doing it, but XCEED isn't one of those groups.
>>4097933says the westoid
>>4098688Xsneed is exactly the kind of group that deserves to be hated because they've been doing shitty rewrites and butchering of the original scripts before modern localizers and translators did>>4098739>no uKWAB
>>4098739You weren't supposed to point that out
>>4099114There was no butchery. They elevated the existing script, and made something that people care about. Just because it's not a machine translation doesn't mean it's some kind of affront to God.Would you rather have 50+ instances of "What?!?" in the script?
>>4099398>They changed the original script and intent and that made it better chud!
>>4099398>Would you rather have 50+ instances of "What?!?" in the script? What you say?
>>4099415>>4099428They didn't change the intent of the script. The only major change that was made was to replace repetitive instances of interjection dialogue (that would translate as "What?" Or "Huh?") with other, more context-specific responses.Unironically, the fact they stopped doing that with the Cold Steel Tetrology lead to one of the biggest complaints about Rean as a character: his repetitive, flat responses to what other characters were saying.
>>4094564I mean the 3-way ending is kind of implied as-is, if anything a modern choose-your-romance would have diminished it. The protagonist is Vyse, not (you) and Vyse is a gigachad who pulls 2 girls at once
