In my experience it felt like a shitty pc game and I had to repair my weapons constantly and all this other tedious crap. I do put up with a lot of tedious crop from playing koei games for thousands of hours though. Maybe I should give it a 2nd chance. For what its worth I only played the original nes version.

How do you avoid dying if you start as a Shepherd in IV? The ground around your starting position is poison. Sure, if you die you end up teleported in front of Lord British, but I was wondering if there's another way to leave the ghost town without you keeling over.
