What purpose does it serve? It has an extremely bland setting, an awful engine graphic and art style, mediocre writing, weird map design, iffy combat, and itbis crammed with absolutely awful crowdfunding shit.

Why did the team even waste their time, was it just a scam to make a salary?

It was basically just Sawyer (pbuh) wanting to make a version of Baldur's Gate, except that it was actually good.
>>

>What purpose does it serve?
To make money for the developers?

I have roughly 110 hours in this game. Two playthroughs. Will do another one at some point. Love it, and yet another butthurt thread won't stop me from loving it.

You had to be there. There was a 2nd CRPG renaissance and everyone was in an ecstatic mood. Getting the Black Isle boys back together for a baldurs gate ripoff seemed like a slam dunk.

In retrospect, PoE was probably the least noteworthy of that wave of RPGs. Not an interesting failure or rousing success, it just plainly delivered on its goals. Even Sawyer said that PoE was his least ambitious work. The backers just wanted the dev team to play the hits.

It was not that bad

>Why was this game made?
To cash in on Baldur's Gate nostalgia, any design quibble you can think of is born from that.

Musclewizardbros, our response??

Walking into the first town and being hit by the corpse tree was neat. Everything went downhill from there.
>>
Its so bizarre to see the same people who constantly shit on PoE praise owlkek pathfinder games.
>>
>>4072036
agreed, pathfinders games were a tedious slog that I never finished, I could at least finish PoE

Number of times they were mentioned previously in this thread: 0

Which one is better Pathfinder or Pillars?
>>
>>4072036
Because they have romances.
Seek no further for any other answer. All anyone here cares about are romances.
>>
>>4072048
Pillars is much, much, much better.
>>
>>4071780
But enough about Pathfinder games
>>
>>4071780
kickstarter frenzy + nostalgia trend

Once the game was released and the setting was sort of done, the rest of the time was spent observing and reading players to find any strategies they were using and trying to annoy them. Every comment on the obsidian forum, on an rpg forum, on social media, on reddit, or in a youtube comment that said "this class/item/spell is useful" they immediately set to work looking for a way to ruin it. And God help you... if you ever wrote something like "this class is fun", you were basically asking for a death sentence.

>>4071780
I don't know what you mean, the games are pretty good, although admittedly the 2nd one's main story pacing and writing was much worse.
>>
>>4072368
This is fucking pathetic.
>>
>>4071780
>What purpose does it serve?
it brought rpgs back from the dead
>>
>>4072377

That's because Sawyer is autistic retard who doesn't understand the concept of fun.

No wonder Pillars are bland lifeless shit.
>>
>>4071780
they brought back the CRPG genre after it had been mostly replaced by ARPG slop. it was an ambitious move at the time, so I respect what they were going for. But the game sucked and wasn't as good as Baldur's Gate
