What purpose does it serve? It has an extremely bland setting, an awful engine graphic and art style, mediocre writing, weird map design, iffy combat, and itbis crammed with absolutely awful crowdfunding shit. Why did the team even waste their time, was it just a scam to make a salary?
>>4071780It was basically just Sawyer (pbuh) wanting to make a version of Baldur's Gate, except that it was actually good.
>>4071780>What purpose does it serve? To make money for the developers?
I have roughly 110 hours in this game. Two playthroughs. Will do another one at some point. Love it, and yet another butthurt thread won't stop me from loving it.
>>4071780You had to be there. There was a 2nd CRPG renaissance and everyone was in an ecstatic mood. Getting the Black Isle boys back together for a baldurs gate ripoff seemed like a slam dunk.In retrospect, PoE was probably the least noteworthy of that wave of RPGs. Not an interesting failure or rousing success, it just plainly delivered on its goals. Even Sawyer said that PoE was his least ambitious work. The backers just wanted the dev team to play the hits.
>>4071780It was not that bad
>>4071780>Why was this game made?To cash in on Baldur's Gate nostalgia, any design quibble you can think of is born from that.
>>4071953>any design quibble you can think of is born from thatMusclewizardbros, our response??
Walking into the first town and being hit by the corpse tree was neat. Everything went downhill from there.
Its so bizarre to see the same people who constantly shit on PoE praise owlkek pathfinder games.
>>4072036agreed, pathfinders games were a tedious slog that I never finished, I could at least finish PoE

>>4072036Which one is better Pathfinder or Pillars?
>>4072036Because they have romances.Seek no further for any other answer. All anyone here cares about are romances.
>>4072048Pillars is much, much, much better.
>>4071780But enough about Pathfinder games
>>4071780kickstarter frenzy + nostalgia trend
>>4071780>Why did the team even waste their time, was it just a scam to make a salary?Once the game was released and the setting was sort of done, the rest of the time was spent observing and reading players to find any strategies they were using and trying to annoy them. Every comment on the obsidian forum, on an rpg forum, on social media, on reddit, or in a youtube comment that said "this class/item/spell is useful" they immediately set to work looking for a way to ruin it. And God help you... if you ever wrote something like "this class is fun", you were basically asking for a death sentence.
>>4071780I don't know what you mean, the games are pretty good, although admittedly the 2nd one's main story pacing and writing was much worse.
>>4072368This is fucking pathetic.
>>4071780>What purpose does it serve?it brought rpgs back from the dead
>>4072377That's because Sawyer is autistic retard who doesn't understand the concept of fun.No wonder Pillars are bland lifeless shit.
>>4071780they brought back the CRPG genre after it had been mostly replaced by ARPG slop. it was an ambitious move at the time, so I respect what they were going for. But the game sucked and wasn't as good as Baldur's Gate
>>4071780Pillars of Eternity is likely the worst game ever made. Any game that managed to spike the blood pressure of “Angry Joe” or a similar manchild grifter has more artistic value that this emetic affront to the medium.

>>4071972The system is pretty bad. The setting, companions and story is the interesting part. Total Iovara love, total Thaos soul obliteration.
>>4072048As an arch chud, I finished PoE and had a good time. I got like 75% though PoE2, and had kind of a bad time. Both had good visuals and fun class designs but PoE2 style of narrative reveal was awful, and the combat was poorly set up for rtwp. Poe1 still had simple enough classes that you did not have to pause every 3 seconds to issue commands / positioning - PoE2 didOwlcat games have all been abysmal dogshit in both writing and mechanics and encounter design. They are simply not worth playing.
>>4071780> an awful engine graphic and art styleWhy are you trying to force this retarded and complete contradiction to reality meme? Are you some tranime weirdo obsessed with lolis or something?
>>4079902>Poe1 still had simple enough classes that you did not have to pause every 3 seconds to issue commands / positioning - PoE2 didUse the scripting system for your companions. Surprisingly, it's very good.
>>4071780>mediocre writingThat is extremely generous. Also you forgot schizophrenic system. But people were REALLY hungry for classic BG-style RPGs back then. I fell for nostalgia myself but half-way through the game I realized it's a dogshit creatively bankrupt snoozefest and dropped it. Cipher class was pretty cool tho.
>>4079950Ehh, I know the solution is to simply lower the difficulty, but how the ai uses limited resources on rogue (especially near and game) and how it targets spells drives me insane. It’s hard to get the scripting / difficulty point where the one character I micro makes a difference and the battle isn’t just auto resolved.
Furthermore i think it has been time to update dungeon design from the “rooms and tunnels, pop a pod, alpha strike it, rest, repeat” that has been the mainstay of this genre for 30 years. Have the dungeon be one coherent whole, with runners, reinforcments, retreats, alarms, barricading, etc. isn’t it time for a bit more sophistication in encounter design?
>>4080154I had zero issues playing on POTD with upscaling as a rogue/fighter besides the superbosses. I suppose rogues and fighters are the most micro-heavy in a lot of ways due to their many positional abilities though, so I could see the experience being different if you were playing another class.
>>4080146>Cipher class was pretty cool tho.I've only played Cipher and found it really weird how it was the only class that had no limits on casts per day for spells. It entirely removed the system, basically. It felt overpowered as fuck.
I like it.Most of its faults are a result of doing what kickstarter trannies wanted. Initially Sawyer wanted to have less attribute checks and more skill checks, see deadfire, but kickstarter trannies said attribute checks are deep and the writers didn't understand what they're doing(hence might was interpreted as strength in writing).Another example is plot and writing itself. Obsidian strength throughout the years has been writing plots about things that are important on a political level of their respective worlds but not metaphysically important. Fallout New Vegas was all about political rivalry for important but still local resource hub. Kickstarter trannies would have none of this, they needed to make it deep and centred around souls and shit like planescrap:borement(gone home/the last of us of its time - look games can be matuuuure uuuuh) also make writing really flowery. They still did a decent job with what they were given to be honest. One thing they've nailed were the gods, far from being Jesus-split-apart they follow their own internal logic and agency and their idea of order goes beyond mortal pragmatism. Even with the great twist about them at the end the writers understood how a pantheon of deities should operate. My fav is Skaen because I'm an incel. Would worship irl 10/10.The RPG system underneath is solid, 2nd game is better, but it rests on the solid foundation of the first. The artstyle is nice and grounded, which I think works well. My big problem with a lot of fantasy aesthetic is that they go for just excessive ornamentation and overdesign of everything, here it's all very grounded and practical, a set of armour is an armour you can wear without stabbing yourself with a spike in some part of it accidentally. So yeah while I prefer the 2nd game for the much, much better character building the first is nothing to scoff at.
>>4081001Chanters are also not limited by casts per day
>>4071780it was a cynical cash grab, when you look at the original kickstarter page https://web.archive.org/web/20140222025055/https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity this is how it was advertised, they repeatedly claimed Avellone would have a major role in writing it but he wrote two PCs which maybe amounted to a couple of days of work considering how bland and bad they are https://x.com/ChrisAvellone/status/665327327300202496 https://x.com/ChrisAvellone/status/665036284235157504

>>4085522clearly a good decision for him desu
>>4072048King Maker has ntr so pillars wins by default
POE was a passable BG clone, but didn't come close to surpassing the BG series imo. But at least I managed to finish it unlike the dogshit pathfinder games
>>4071784RIP in peace
>>4085522The CEO had to micromanage him because at the time he was a depressed alcoholic whose parents were dying. That being said, PoE's writing was dogshit without him, the two characters he wrote are immediately apparent as being of a better vintage.
>>4071780The maps in this game are fucking fine art, jfc bait used to believable.
>>4089939I’m not a big fan of Pillars but it does look nice for what it is.
>>4088780He micromanages all their projects unless he's too busy. NWN2's terrible story was his idea. The writer of Dungeon Siege III said he had a more interesting story to tell but was forced to write that one. Tim Cain says he only agreed to direct The Outer Worlds if he promised not to second-guess his decisions, and he not only went back on that, he went behind his back and told a dev on the team to put something in the game Cain said he didn't want.
>>4071780It was my first CRPG and i liked it.
OP here, this thread inspired me to try it again. The unity character models are insanely bad, it was a terrible engine pick here same as it was for the Wasteland sequels.Art direction is all over the place, most of the characters and settings look realistic then you get cartoonish stuff like Spikey Badguy Fortress thrown inThe writing is all over the place, I feel like I can pick up bits of Avellone scattered among the trash but it's rare so I assume this is when he was being pushed out.I'll beat it this time, but I think my criticisms stand even if they're a bit harsh.
>>4086596>King Maker has ntr Hot. How do I access it?
>>4093618It doesn't. There's an option for a couple of different threeways. One with a pair of female tiefling twins, another with a male half-orc and a female half-elf.
>>4072048pathfinder is so retard that I can't even manage to make myself play for two hours.the first pillars is so so. I like turn based rpg. off course the retard game was not working great like that when I've first played the game. I think they have added this game mode after some time.anyway the pillars 2 is nice with all the pirates and the ship. better than 1
>>4095454>only 2 hoursPathfinder is really really good around the 30 hour mark. The problem is there's another 100 hours after that.
>>4071815>You had to be there.Unfortunately. The first classic high budget CRPG in God knows how long.Big names, old formula. And what a fucking disappointment it was. Big names mean nothing when they are just washed out managers with overblown ego (and genuien retards like Sawyer). The old formula of isometric RPG is worthless when the gameplay, locations and rules isn't worth much. And the fluff sucked really hard. Both the setting and the plot. It was just painfully bland and uninteresting. Reminded me of Neverwinter 2, the plot was written in a way that made you physically tired at some point.
>>4079902>Owlcat games have all been abysmal dogshit in both writing and mechanics and encounter design. They are simply not worth playing.Rogue Trader is pretty good. You should give it a try if you like RPGs or 40K.
>>4094058You can steal the elf away from the orc, he's befuddled over her switching to monogamy and choosing your character over him.
>>4092947Getting to the end of Act II, about to start the DLC.It's just a very sloopy game that could have been great if they hadn't canned Avellone and injected way too much kickstarter fanservice in place of content. The game is really low budget and I don't get why considering how successful the crowdfunding was. They clearly skinoednheaviky in the worldbuilding, there are multiole quests that were supposed to have multiple outcomes they never got to work. The disposition stuff is janky, and Inwoukd he extremely bored if I didn't turn my ebtire party into a arquebus and blunderbuss firing line.
>>4081001I am playing it right now as a Melee Wizard. It's the same as in old school RPGs. Wizards start weak, but when you gain few levels, they completely obliterate whole screen.Cipers need time to gain focus in order to cast ONE spell, but wizard can just cast non stop (until your WHOLE spellbook is empty. Good luck with that).I can not say this game is bad, but it certainly is weird.

>>4107550what is there to say? The classes, build crafting are a million times better, game is most fun on core, the writing in pillars is just exposition dump about literal whos all the time. I'll add that I'm talking about wrath of the righteous, because kingmaker is awful due to the shitty mini game, the loading screens and then garbage encounter design. also deadfire itemization is as good as wotr, so there's that. as a rule i despise when RPGs have this obsession with buff removal and it turns wizards into archers that shoot glowing VFX instead of arrows
people flail about the strenghts and flaws of this game (franchise) to no end, but the truth is they dropped the ball right at the start: they fumbled the settingit's fucking BORINGit's not even just the story/writing of what you're going through as the PC, the setting itself is so lifeless it's incredible they ever went with itThe settings "core mystery" is basically 42'd with the answer "The gods aren't *actually* real and there's no deeper mystery or fantasy lmao souljuice.".Who the fuck thought this was clever for a fantasy setting? It subverts itself so hard it might as well not even exist as a setting; now there's some subversion of expectations for you!You can shit on settings like forgotten realms for being shlocky YA magical realms, but at least they've got a spark of creativity in them instead of being some weird r/atheism "logical" settingwhich, again, is fucking stupid for fantasy. It's like deciding there'll be no sciencey stuff in a scifi setting since that'll subvert the expectations. It's not clever, it's not creative, it's doing a worn-out storytelling technique they were enamored with in 2010's just for the sake of doing it without any thought beyond that.Obsidian has always been at their best working off other people's ideas, their strenght has never been doing fully original creations.
>>4107555>Who the fuck thought this was clever for a fantasy setting?Californian leftist atheists
>>4107585dunking on people like them isn't really even fun anymore, if it ever waswhen you really stop and think about it basically every "great" fantasy setting, meaning they have at least one great story told in them, are in some way utterly ridiculous if you really start unraveling them and going "well, akshually, realistically and logically the giant eagles' tax policies..."suspension of disbelief is the glue that holds any fiction story together, and that goes doubly for fantasy since it applies to the very setting tooExplaining all the mystery out of a setting is so fucking stupid it's a well known joke trope by the way of "the answer is 42", or for an example that was actually done to kneecap the mysteries of a setting, fucking midichlorians in SW (this was later reeled back a lot though).Yeah people have different thresholds for suspeding their belief, but a big part of the fantasy genre kinda relies on you accepting all kinds on bullshit that basically rely on the explanation of "the gods/a wizard did it". When the setting actively makes you question its own validity by its core narrative choices it mainly only works if it's a satire/parody/comedy or some kind of one off "deconstruction" (which are usually shit to begin with).I'm now actively trying to think if there are "active" settings that hold onto being deconstructionist, usually it's a death sentence so I'm drawing a blank here.
>>4107600>suspension of disbelief is the glue that holds any fiction story together, and that goes doubly for fantasy since it applies to the very setting tooThis is what ruined BG3 for me. I went into the game excited and wanting to like it, and playing the game gradually destroyed my suspension of disbelief until I hated it and just wanted it to be over.
>>4107601>wanting to like itCompletely matches my experienceThe production quality itself is honestly generational, but they went so hard with the mocap acting and shit that after a while it started to feel like stumbling onto theater kids doing larp sessions...which is what it basically is.The itemization is also kinda annoying since it allows you to juggle so much skill stuff around it kinda becomes exhausting/unfun, unless you just give up and play closer to how one would on story mode.A lot of fantasy shit works much better on page, or as read text in a CRPG.But I can accept that the more casual crowd eats this shit up so in that sense it's an extremely successful product.
>>4107555The only two things of note about PoE's world are guns and that hobo dwarf's goddess being a whore. This whole world honestly could be reduced to a nondescript side quest village between Beregost and Nashkel.

All the crpgs that people regularly talk about here are very good. There's extremely harsh "fans" in this genre compared to most others. You don't get to truly mediocre crpgs until you talk about stuff like Torment: Tides of Numenera. Even Tyranny, which is much worse than PoE 1 and 2, is a Good rpg.
>>4108366Suspension of disbelief, diametrically opposed to modern day political activism such as lgbtq, minority and immigrant representation.Instantly takes me out of it, game is dogshit. You're dogshit
>>4072114Well. No.And not just in a "they're different" way. Pillars 1 is painfully minimalistic in terms of character customization and gameplay. It's got pretty maps and an interesting world and a good plot. But Kingmaker blows it out of the water in terms of scope and tactical complexity.Pillars 2 Deadfire is truly one of the best RPGs ever made, gorgeous maps, a dramatic improvement in character mechanics, far better environment interaction / navigation and a satisfying conclusion of the plot. It managed to provide catharsis completing the plot from the first game while still providing space and a direction for any future games in the setting. But it's blown out of the water by Wrath Of The Righteous in terms of build complexity, character customization and ultimately a far more complete and personalized plot. The player in Wrath is the center of the story in a way that the player in Deadfire absolutely is not. Deadfire's ending is absolutely and completely unaffected by anything you do as a player. In Wrath, by contrast, the player can literally refuse to play along and win by insisting upon doing things their own way.Pillars 1 did not age well. It's good... for the time period. It's better than BG1. It's not better than BG2. It's not better than Kingmaker. Deadfire aged very well. It's still a fantastic RPG. It's better than BG2 and Kingmaker. It's not better than Wrath.
>>4108581I'm sorry to hear that the schizo voices in your head are ruining your immersion. Have you considered taking meds?
>>4108654>1PF is build "complexity" and build complexity destroys tactics because you use the same thing every fight (which is going to be like 20 enemies of the same type for PKM specifically).Note I'm saying "complexity" because PF build "complexity" is just bloat you have to navigate to stay clear of the trap options, and that's not deepPoE is actually better in regards of tactical gameplay because unlike PKM it has what facilitates tactical gameplay, good map and encounter design
>>4108654>navigation and a satisfying conclusion of the plot.lol

>>4128391Wrath has even more combat than the first game.
Every now and then I think about going back and getting the last Achievement in this game. But I've spent so much time in it, I can't stand the idea of another playthrough. I only feel this way about Pillars of Eternity though. I've got just as many hours in Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder, Underrail, Shadowrun, Colony Ship and every other isometric RPG that's ever been made, but uniquely the thought of playing one more minute of Pillars makes me ill.I honestly don't know why.
>>4074848kek
What is so wrong with Pathfinder games? Never really played them
>>4128875The combat and the choice paralysis filter some people. Turn based chaff fights can be too lenghty and some enemies are annoying on purpose (like the tabletops), the games boils down a lot to being a numbers gameBut I still find it fun, game is a power fantasy through and through, and the build variety is quite nice if you don't have a mental illness which insists on playing in harder/"realistic" difficulties in a slav jank game. Modding scene is also pretty decentBoth game have tons of issues and the player models are very very ugly. But if you look past that you will have fun. I think that was made me dislike Pillars, it just..too grey and bland in comparison, even if fights were properly balanced in comparisonRogue Trader is still is their masterpiece, really like what they did with the combat there, my only grip is that Owlcat artists suck on drawing cute femmes
Playing Pillars is one of the only times I felt actually exhausted
>>4128875Kingmaker is pretty standard fare.Wrath runs into the problem of it being their second game where they decided to balance it like absolutely everyone will have played and mastered kingmaker. Basically where you could play kingmaker on core and be completely fine provided you had experience with 3rd edition D&D games, Wrath assumes you have preplanned builds and clairvoiance of most everything to come. Also a common complaint on wrath is the pacing is poor. The game takes far too long before you get to the actual meat which I have to agree with. In kingmaker you just go through act1 as a tutorial and then the entire game opens up. In wrath you get through act 1 just to get to the god awful crusade HoMM minigame that everyone hates and then have to get through all of act 2 before you even get to the more enjoyable part of the game.
>>4071784>except that it was actually good.was it?compared to Baldur's Gate
>>4129226>was it?>compared to Baldur's GatePillars is potentially the most aggressively mediocre RPG ever made. It's not bad, it's not great, it's just there. It has a handful of good ideas (no dump stats, all stats are useful to every class) that are marred by poor execution (muscle wizards, everyone but me dump stats anyway). And it was made by Californian leftoids who managed to subvert all the soul out of fantasy. It is, ironically, a hollowborn game.
>>4129243thanks.glad I never touched it over the years

>>4129243It is unbelievable how soulless it is. >>4129534>I don't mind muscle wizards. The problem is all the cope about "Noooo it's a METAPHOR it's just about SPIRITUAL strength" but every might check in the game is all "and then you BEND the FUCK out of those BITCHASS BARS with your GIANT MUSCLES". If you want to play a high-STR wizard that's fine, just be honest and own it.>Also I actually like the stats because everyone dumps resolve but the best conversation options are locked by resolve so it's a system that naturally segregates kino RPers and subhuman meta chasers.Yeah, or dumping CON is a popular choice as well it seems.I personally always make a custom party, and I give everyone a baseline of 10 in every stat, and two 18s in what I want them to be good at. Main character is generally a paladin with 18 str and 18 resolve. There's some quests which are not solvable to my satisfaction without high resolve, and I won't play without it.
>>4129779I wish games would go to either roll stats or find creative ways to heavily penalize dump stats.Dump con? You have to make rolls just to take basic actions without fainting.Dump int? Not only is your character illiterate, but now every bit of text in the game is just gibberish.
>>4129802That would make the game insuferrable though.
>>4072368>>4072377>>4072419lolI am playing this shit right now, and apparently they nerfed it because of ONE class (Barbarian), which has a passive AOE ability and it makes ALL weapons with special effects proc more often. For fuck's sake, just make it class specific item, which exclude Barbarians. But no, lets just nerf it and make it USELESS for literally every other class.Sawyer is a complete retard (and a cuck).
>>4129981>That would make the game insuferrable though.Don’t intentionally give your character retardedly low stats to cheese the game.
Shit, I had forgotten about the "no fun allowed" design philosophy and post release patching.
>>4130049They also just put out a patch after the game being “done” for like ten years, and it didn’t do anything important other than break modsTotal faggot devs
>>4130042By making all stat spreads feel the same?
>>4130053The Bethesda playbook.I had forgotten why I hated this game, because the graphics, music, and vibes are good. And the story being shit isn't enough to really hate it. I'm now reminded.
>>4130061If you think that “all stat spreads feel the same” except hideously imbalanced and silly gimmick builds, that’s a skill issue on your part, likely stemming some non-existent roleplaying ability and just looking at your characters as a set of numbers.
>>4130074Stats are a set of numbers. In a game. They are a game mechanic."Roleplaying" isn't a stat spread.
>>4130077>"Roleplaying" isn't a stat spread.Correct.
