How hot a take is it if I think I like the first one more than 4? I haven't played either extensively, but I immediately recognize that the way A Fantasy Harvest Moon plays exactly as it describes had a stronger resonance with me.

Personally I like RF4 a little bit more, but the RF3 port is way better than the RF4 one. They're both good though, and they're all pretty standalone so you don't need to worry about playing in order. RF3 also has twice as many bachelorettes for you to date than RF4, while RF4 has a much longer story.

Meanwhile, Fiersome is the one who's supposed to destroy everything after Venti's death. That's why he wakes up in 2 and tries to destroy everything. Because that's his job. Basically he was supposed to do it 1000 or so years ago (in Leon's original time) but never got the call because Venti never died. So the Earthmates send Kyle to put his ass back to sleep but he jobs and his kid has to finish Fiersome off.
Terrable is the one who is supposed to remake everything/put the runes back in the earth after Fiersome does his business, but since Fiersome is still asleep because Venti is still alive, he basically just sleeps until we wake him up in 1. In 1, the Sechs want that power for themselves because they've drained all of their runes and don't realize that it's part of a cycle and creating Grimoire/Terrable Jr isn't going to magically create runes out of nothing.
Aquaticus... Well, they never really say what the cockblock queen actually does except care about the Sharance Tree's flowers. Maybe that new comic will get into it.
But what I'm getting at is Venti herself is pretty convinced up until the very, very end of act 3 that her death is necessary and a good thing. And in terms of the natural rune cycle, she's probably right, but the Earthmates have decided that the natural rune cycle is unnecessary.
It ends up working for Azuma too, after all. And I assume the elf land also has a similar working arrangement, because they never mention calamities over there like Azuma had.

I liked the premise, replacing farming with building shit and actively improving the town with unlocking new mechanics and regions through honest labour rather than going through another set of maze-like caves (seriously though, anybody who thinks that this shit in RF4 was good is a retard, they should have at least tried to make them alike the Guardian dungeons) was a breath of fresh air and I simply love guns. I liked mechanics related to digging through ruins, finding logs from the time of the calamity that ended the old world hurt, in comparison with pretty happy and comfy overall feeling of the game. Just like Tides it left farming aside to focus on other gimmicks, this time around was town customization, combat, and more relationship focus with the bachelors/bachelorettes, it was never going to be on the same level of complexity as RF4. At least they didn't fuck it up by adding something retarded like runeys this time around.
What you should be worried about now is RF6, but it's being directed by Maekawa instead of Hashimoto so it will probably be better than RF5.

In retrospect RF4 isn't even as good as some people make it out to be. And I play the games in the genre (which pretty much until SDV was only HM/RF) for over 20 years now, it definitely was the peak of what DS platform had to offer and polished the mechanics to the point where everything had enough depth that autists can have time of their life fucking around with making weapons classifying as WMDs, but choice to base triggers for Town Events off RNG (most infamously the beginning of Act III which thanks to that I have never even reached, on my third playthrough on Special, where it is apparently simpler, I was too burnt out by the time I got through Floating Castle to go on) and lackluster area design beyond Act I make me like RF3 or spin-offs much more, despite being simpler, but overall much more well-rounded experiences that don't extend into infinity. Never been a fan of the autistic min-maxing and overall it seems like it is the main reason why RF4 is treated like some Holy Grail of the farm sims since the times of /rfhmg/. I will just say that replaying Frontier WITHOUT Runey cheat was way more pleasant for me than finishing Act I of RF4 in my latest playthrough. Could be also that I played it only once as opposed to three times I played RF4 and it was shitload of time ago, so despite knowing layout of Trampoli like the back of my hand, I didn't remember enough to be bored.

To be honest, RF5 was doomed to fail - I didn't expect it to be very good because there would be some growing pains that came from transitioning to full 3D, plus people would have unrealistic expectations despite it being a revived team after years of inactivity since Marvelous fucking died. XSEED being retarded at the time (maybe to this day, I don't really play any other weeb games) didn't help.either. GoA is a major improvement, even if the focus is a bit different, but if we would get RF6 with RF4/RF5 farming/crafting (if I remember correctly all systems were copied 1:1) and with GoA combat (although I would balance the bow a little bit because especially on PC shit is broken as fuck), relationship system and basing character development off personal questlines (and for the love of God, don't limit them only to marriage candidates again, one of the best things about the Oceans/ToD was giving those tiny storylines to all the villagers that unfolded as you leveled up their relationship level) we get a good game. Maybe not "beyond" because we cannot evn say what do we expect from it, but best to play it safe and take what works well. And expect kvetching at unavoidable playersexual marriage candidates. If they had worked on the engine in-house instead of outsourcing most of it, and the game didn't release full of bugs it would've dibe a lot better than it did, I played during the JP release and found it was pretty charming despite all the problems it had. Got a new longsword recipe and made it to switch backk off of the dual blades I found in Obsidian Mansion, but need to do some farming/grinding runs so Clorica stops getting 1-shot by high orcs and was wondering if spreading my weapon skill xp around would be better than going all-in on the weapon I prefer to use. Yes but only for the first levels as they're the easiest to level up, the bonuses are static so there's really no point on grinding them for too long. You should mostly focus on your main weapon (and one or two types of magic) (/https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/3ds/635388-rune-factory-4/faqs/74139)

Hell is a stat check, so rather than slowly leveling up through fighting you should focus on giving them better equipment instead. I honestly never bother with NPC companions during Act 1 because they'll probably keep getting one-shot until you start getting better crafting recipes. Tamed monsters' levels (and stats) on the other hand are area-specific, so as long as you keep cycling through them they'll carry you through most of the story.

Theyve been fine for me, but I just swapped out Forte for Clorica so she is way behind on xp. Amber has come in clutch multiple times already. Part of my current farm/grind is to get the mats to level up forge/craft at least to the point to where I can use all the new drops and stuff for upgrades. Fallen a bit behind on that.

Relationship levels go up to 100 pretty much just for bloating your game time, since level 10 is all you need to get hitched with a candidate. I don't really play 4 since going after Marge feels like cheating on my wife, but for GoA:
The no black void ones are really good.
Better villagers mod too since they're not really procedurally generated, you might as well skip the RNG.
Stonks (all items have unlimited stock at shops) is also good if you wanna get things done quicker.
There's also the interesting ones called Rustic Rune Factory mods that made characters look like they're from Oceans. kinda neat IMO.
