Not a single new or update about the combat. The most boring, tedious and slow combat ever.I wish it could become a Chivalry-like where your moves MATTER and there are dismemberments, but if it's not possible, at least a heavy deep update that makes it FUN to play.>SWTOR wants to be a WoW-killer>has the worst combat ever, tab-target>it's even slower than WoW's>WoW at least keeps updating it, SWTOR is been the same since 2011>EA acts surprised when it didn't triumph over WoW >combat is 97% of gameplay>the other 3% is some cool story-decision, options that don't matter, cashslop, speed to missions but too slow and some other meh stuff>you can't even flight like in WoWAlso, still it's NOT an open-world, unlike WoW.
Why are you surprised? This game has been on life support for years and no one but the most hardcore Star Wars fans cares. It's confined to the same pit of mediocrity that all MMO's eventually end up.
>>4079272They killed SWG for this, at least, we should get something good, fun to play, it's not too much to ask for.
I think you might be misunderstanding what this game really is. It is not the best foot forward for multi-player star wars. Neither Disney nor EA think that. It is an old attempt to chase the at the time trendy mmo genre and it was clear within a year that they fucked up. Its been allowed to operate for over a decade now on a skeleton crew because it prints money without much effort. They are never going to invest heavy development time or technology in this game again. If a studio has a great idea for a multi-player star wars game, EA will greenlight its development rather than waste any time trying to bring SWTOR up to par. SWTOR has always had immense technical challenges because of the shitty, jury-rigged engine they chose to use so starting over again would be cheaper and easier anyway. And it will probably look more like Destiny or Helldivers because that's what actually popular these days. MMOs are dead. Expect nothing from this game but more of what they've been doing, and expect that to dwindle as well.
>>4079355>so starting over again would be cheaper and easier anyway. If I remember correctly, the devs said they will move the game to a better engine, if they finally do it, I want a good deep remake for the combat.Another thing I truly hate and I forgot to write it in OP, the awful millennial writing, it gives me Borderlands vibes which I hate>be me, playing imperial agent>my boss, Keeper, has manners>I do the same since 'manners maketh the man'>my (not wanted) companion Kaliyo Djannis disapproves for some reasonOk, bitch, you are anarchist and all that retarded stuff, it doesn't mean you have to be an asshole every time there is a conversation. I wish you could kill the companions you dislike whenever you want.
>>4079265You should visit /swgg/ on /vm/.
>>4079265It's the only Star Wars game where I can play old republic era sith, not cringy rule of two sith or fallen to the dark side jedincel. Also, only SW game where you can play sith purebloods. So no matter what you will say, it ends up best SW game for me. Yeah, an mmo. Says more about shitty series that SW is and that fans want their trooper and jedi slop.
>>4079965Dude, I think you misunderstood the thread, I don't want this game to fail, I want it to show the true potential of the Old Republic era.>the only Star Wars game where I can play old republic era sith, not cringy rule of two sith or fallen to the dark side jedincel. Also, only SW game where you can play sith purebloods.THIS.Also, the politics in this game actually make sense (except the Zakuul arc), are cool and interesting, something than the 9 films were not able to do. And this is why I dislike the Zakuul arc:>retcons the previous peace treaty between the Republic and the Reich>previously the treaty was a masterpiece of Sith diplomacy (the own game tells you that), with the Eternal Throne exp. its devs can't stop telling you how bad it was and how the Sith could have done it better;>Zakuul, finally an interesting third party that breaks the awful manichean duality Republic vs Reich, ends up in nothing>the Eternal Fleet, YOU become its leader just to be wipeout 5 seconds later and nothing happens, no attempt of rebuilding itStar Wars MUST STOP retconning its cool things by turning them into lameslop.
>>4079265so what is the new SWTOR expansion? what's the selling point? are they doing a story thing? is it gonna be more third-faction gay shit like kotfe?
>>4080291Why did you get the third-faction thing?
>>4079265This game was being propped up by whales a decade ago, how the fuck is it still going?Lana is wife material btw
>>4080739Idk. I prefer Watcher-Two, she is literally (genetically) the perfect girl.
>>4079265Their last few "expansions" have been ass because they started copying the GW2 formula aka splitting them into chunks released over a long period of time. Some interesting stuff in 8.0, though.
If you play swtor without much cynism (hard after 25+) then it's a 9/10.There's enough base game content to play for an entire year, maybe three if you wanna do all classes up to Makeb + various events.Writing, stories, characters, companions and even the romance options, especially on Imperial side show that someone gave a fuck.Treat it like a game made by passionate people in a garage with a piece-of-shit engine because normalfags want>muh graphicsBut if you don't like star wars, or mmos, or that they killed SWG for this, it's a 5/10 game.if you really hate tab combat, it's a 4/10.>>4079355thanks for saying what I was trying to say in a quicker fashion>>4079607I fucking love that Keeper mirrors your behaviour. >>4080291>is it gonna be more third-faction gay shit like kotfe? They kind of dug their graves with that stuff. How else would they effectively destroy the 3rd faction and bring back the original Republic vs Empire? Their best bet is to do 2 types of story. One would be your generic Empire vs Republic, with minimal Alliance 3rd wheeling bullshit. And the 2nd type of story would be the Alliance exploring/solving cosmic horrors and old sith/jedi civilizations in deep space. Away from all the Empire and Republic politics. Sort of like Indiana Jones, in space.
I know this board is slow, but this feels like a thread that could have been from more than 10 years ago
>>4083981There's no more new MMOs or any hype around new MMOs anymore, so people are coming back to the few that remained and survived. Also, SWTOR is actually a nice game ever since you can freely do the story and have zero reason to grind through for experience, it's a fun and lore/story heavy RPG. One of the few /v/idya worlds you can immerse yourself with, if you are not a 25+ year old, completely jaded individual.
>>4084005>have zero reason to grind through for experience, You forget about the slow walk / speed / mount simulator (this last two are slow too), and the constant go-and-return in every single mission. >it's a fun and lore/story heavy RPG."""Fun""" if you somehow forget about all the boredom, which it's 99% of your time playing the game, in between of those funny seconds. >if you are not a 25+ year old, completely jaded individual.Well, it's joever for me, then.
>>4084005I would be surprised if even these supposedly fresh-faced, ever-joyful and unblemished under-25's could enjoy the basic gameplay these days. I'm an unc who played it at launch and for its time, the moment to moment gameplay was acceptable. These days it strikes me as ridiculously tedious. Sure, the bioware dialogue wheel is fun enough, but its always darth so-and-so sending you to pick up a macguffin from an enormous warehouse full of hundreds of generic minions that you slaughter effortlessly. Compared to current day looter shooters that have filled the mmo niche, it's pretty unengaging. Maybe if you're literally 12 and have very little experience with online games or just video games in general. That would also help with being engaged with the writing which can be very ho-hum. Especially the planetary stories which are monotonous "stop the/acquire the doomsday weapon(s)" every time. I think this game is just for hardcore star wars addicts these days. If you just can't get enough you will find a lot to sink into here. If you liked mostly kotor and don't otherwise care deeply for star wars the game is mildly disappointing, but admittedly it still has some of that old shine. Korriban still has my love.
>>4083981SWTOR (and other SW games) had a general on /vg/ for years, now it's on /vm/.
>>4085513>I think this game is just for hardcore star wars addicts these daysI watched the prequels/origunal movies years ago and liked them. Then, I heard about a Mass Effect style game set in Star Wars and thought that was cool. Then I played KOTOR 1 and 2 and fell in love with the philosophies ingrained into the writing, especially in the 2nd game. This made me like SWTOR even more. I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore addict, but, basically, I got pushed into playing the MMO due to the really good RPGs. I believe I would share the same fate if Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 ever got a story heavy spiritual sequel in MMO form.
>>4085513>>4079265I enjoyed SWG but let's not pretend it didn't have its flaws, no actual content for one. This game has a lot of the older non woke bioware and pre-disney star wars preserved in amber still. It's also an mmo that didn't flanderize and disneytize (ironic) all of its own property, at least for the classic storylines. I'm amazed that things like leia bikini, slave girls and shock collars still exist there. So the original stories still feel like an immersive world to wander around in, which is something, the engine was improved, and you can do two builds on one character now and mix most classes you want with only force or tech classes having to match a force or tech story which rounds out some interesting RP choices.Their decade + of system and grinds and voice work miraculously add up to something engaging with such as the starship mode (something mmos and even single player rpgs never got right including mass effect itself, owlcat, and Pillars 2)Broadsword seems willing to address a core problem: most of it is too easy, so at least they have the right mindset for mmos. I think they were part of the DAOC crew at one point? It still feels like an RPG due to the incredible story density and length of the single player modes, even if the gearing and build choices are fairly shallow...still more depth in two classes and a companion choice along with a few skill nodes than many. There's little else I can casually play with my friends like this and still grind alone when I want that feels like an RPG not a woke fest or empty korean theme or minecraft builder. Not into waiting the rest of my life for the disappointment that will be "classic +" quote air quotes quote unquote either.I'm not a hardcore star wars fan as I can't stand what the prequels did much less disney but at least I can find some fun there that isn't completely cringy, since if you're an RPG fan it's hard not to love KOTOR.
>>4080089I see. I misunderstood you. Well, it's an mmo, so it has plenty of problems, I would much rather it was singleplayer, but it is what it is.
I'll consider coming back when they remove the area-based level locks. I didn't spend all that time finding the holocrons to have all my stats gutted just because I did a few sidequests
>>4098162They are adding some sort of difficultly selection or something, but I have not read the patches.
>>4079265Few question SWTOR is free but I'm guessing there's a catch to it so what is it?My actually question though is KOTOR instead. How exactly does Armor Dex Bonus work? Does it only work for defense? Does it outright give you more Dex? I get quite a few mixed answers searching and most of them is on KOTOR 2 and I can't tell if what mechanics changed between the two if any
>>4080089>The last gasps of KOTOR and tru-Bioware.>Star Wars MUST STOP retconning its cool things by turning them into lameslop.Battle was lost long ago, you're defending a corpse fren. A beautiful corpse, but a corpse nonetheless.Even if Broadsword were 100% the most hardcore EU enjoyers/KOTOR defenders there ever were, and willing to really do what it would take what could they even do in the face of Disney and EA license holding overlord? If they were truly artitsts EA would take all those wonderful and empty environment maps, model assets, and use the voice work to train up AI and a build a new engine a la wow forever with actual engaging combat, real open world, integrated ships and space, and more reasons to craft and full dialogue all kinds of new content. But that would require greenlight of an actual budget, and furthermore handing that budget to people that actually cared about KOTOR, RPGs, and video games. Instead it will go to some liberal arts major middle manager type dev using sweet baby inc. as a consultant bossing around 30 million dollars worth of art asset producers for more social justice agitprop. Again. And if TOR is deemed to be stealing too much market share from their shiny new Disney toy, the plug will be pulled on TOR completely.EA and Disney are not comprised of artists anymore, they are licensing gatekeepers and financiers, and that's it. There is no Star Wars there's just a collection of committee decisions leading to purple lightsabers, midichlorians and other failed marketing attempts collected into an ugly dogmatic edifice nearly totally obscuring some stories that were good once, long ago in a galaxy far far away.
>>4099093As F2P you get limited to 2 characters and can only make them a human or cyborg (which makes no difference but cosmetic, but it's still fewer creation options) and you get limited in how much money you can hold at once. Used to be you could buy one of those 30 day pre-paid subscription cards and then continually access all the important stuff after that, but good luck finding any place that still has those.
>>4099307You only need to pay for a month to get permanent access to all the expansion content released up to that point. If you don't care about that, just dropping $5 on cartel coins upgrades you to preferred status from that point forward. The free to play experience has been pretty generous for a while, but in one of the upcoming patches they plan to significantly increase the xp/credit requirements for the convenience feature unlocks so that ride's going to be a bit diminished soon.
I want to play it f2p as the kotor 3 experience. What I'm wondering about is, can I use one of my real e-mails without ea samming me once I quite after finishing 1-2 stories or should I make a new one? Also what class has the best story line and is the least frustrating for solo play?
>>4105033You should at least subscribe to it one, so that when sub runs out you still get preffered status.
>>4105033Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight both have good stories. Your mileage may vary on combat depending on whether you go for the dual wielding specialization or the tank specialization, but I enjoyed itSith Inquisitor has fun combat if you go for the Sorceror specialization and just spam lightning powers but the story is shitImperial Agent is usually held up as the other really good storyline, though both of the combat specializations are kind of weird. Didn't make it too far in that one before my sub expired
>>4105033Stealth classes are generally considered to be the least frustrating since you can skip the hordes of enemies that are too frequently placed between objectives in this game, that means shadow/assassin or operative/scoundrel. No class is really bad at solo play because of your access to companions who can tank or heal for you. So stealth is the only real boost in leveling convenience. Classes are separated from story these days so you can be an assassin and play the warrior storyline for example. As far as stories go, imperial agent and sith warrior top most people's lists and I concur. I personally find every republic story very boring and flat besides smuggler, which just doesn't take itself seriously at all. Actually got a few genuine laughs out of me playing that one. Inquisitor is the only empire story that fails more than it succeeds, and bounty hunter just doesn't have a strong dramatic pull. But it makes up for it by selling the fantasy of an elite mercenary and having some great companions, and notably one everyone really hates. The original class stories are the best content in swtor so it's up to you if you wanna keep playing after that. But it should be noted that the later expansions do a really poor job of making the tech classes feel relevant. Unfortunately, it becomes all about force wizards as time goes on.
>>4105033As >>4109618 says take stealth so you don't have to deal with having to fight every group of enemies they put in your path, but it's not necessarily a good idea to skip everything. A lot of quests will have a bonus objective of killing x number of enemies that you can naturally meet playing it normally, it's practically free xp/credits.When it comes to your combat style, the game defaults you to damage over time for a reason. With multiple damage over time abilities ticking down at once, it's like having an extra character around doing damage. The original class stories have been tuned really easy. If you just do the class stories and the planetary arcs you can coast through the entire thing. Doing additional sidequests beyond those will give you more levels than you need, and each planet also has a level cap to keep your character from overleveling the content. That might be beneficial if you want to skip a later planetary arc if you don't like it, plus those extra quests do give you more credits which are nice to have as a new player who doesn't have a bank full of unused credits from previous characters. As far as email goes, I haven't received any EA spam yet.
>>4099307I'm pretty sure F2Ps can also make Zabrak characters.>>4105033The Jedi Knight class story is "supposed" to be KoTOR 3, but obviously don't get into it with that expectation. I think it's also meant to follow up on a Drew Karpyshyn book or some shit. It's the story with the highest stakes, on par with Sith Warrior, but it's not the most interesting in my opinion. There doesn't seem to be much love for Sith Inquisitor in this thread but I liked it a lot as a counterpart to SW. It's a lot more personal.Jedi Consular is a snoozefest, Smuggler is a clownfest, Trooper is surprisingly good if you're into the military aspect, Bounty Hunter was kind of forgettable. Imp Agent is pretty interesting. >>4109629Given that you mostly fight large groups of weak mobs in solo play, DoT can draw out fights more than necessary. When I played a few years ago I found Sorcery to be the smoothest spec for solo play because of burst damage, combos and AoE attacks.
>>4109613>but the story is shitNah.

>>4110734>Hey if you pretend to be me you can be the head of a secret club where everyone thinks you're the coolest kid EVARIt's pretty bad tbqhwyfam
I've played for 50 hours now and I have to say the worst part isn't the overkill on weak mobs and not even the long travel distances by itself but the constant back and forth for one line of dialog. It's just too much. Also not being able to save and load drives me nuts, I will only see this one version of the Sith Warrior and it's companions. Zero chance I play all that again just to see what happens if I do X different or take companion Y instead of Z with me. Some questions>Once I finish the class story everything after is the same no matter what class I play as?>What happens when I reach max f2p level? Do I just stop leveling up or won't I be able to play with that character?>Is romance adding a lot to the companions story? If so who gets the most extra content for thr SW?

>>4114540If you care enough to do it, Sith Warrior is probably the class that benefits most from two playthroughs for dark and light side. Completely changes the tone and motivations. Also, are you using fast travel and mounts?>Once I finish the class story everything after is the same no matter what class I play as?SWTOR suffers from being an MMO in this aspect. Yes, you're involved in galaxy-shaping events but in the end everything stays the same because there are other players in the game.>What happens when I reach max f2p level? Do I just stop leveling up or won't I be able to play with that character? You stop leveling but you can still play. The levels you get are more than enough for the content you have access to. I remember playing in like 2014 and getting stuck on Nar Shaddaa because I couldn't get any more levels lel>Is romance adding a lot to the companions story? If so who gets the most extra content for thr SW?You're playing the right class for that. Both Vette and Jaesa have great romance stories and they add a lot to their character.
>>4114540>the constant back and forth for one line of dialog.Pay the fast travel cost, it's ultimately trivial.

>>4114579I wonder how Claude or any other advanced "AI" could help into reshape and revive the MMORPG genre, and see an explosion of creativity and freedom for the player.
>>4117412How'd you imagine that? Having AIs taking the place of real players in dead MMOs, or using AI to spontaneously shape the world according to the player's whims?
>>4117412No because MMORPG problem is in large part a community one. You cannot revive that old sense of community anymore because the people are not the same.
This >>4117690 anon speaks the truth. 90's to mid 00's MMOs worked because they were a much better (read: entertaining) alternative to php forums or IRC for socializing online. Nowadays all the various social media platforms and other offerings on the internet cater to online "socialization" needs much more efficiently (and with way more variety). Also the most autistic players have too much access to data mining, hacking, modding and number crunching, which only serves to kill enjoyment (especially for others) of most of the actual game parts of the MMOs themselves. Lastly, the overall gaming culture has evolved (and keeps evolving) more and more towards fragmentation and audience specialization, so it only gets harder to get a lot of people to stick to a particular thing, unless it's literally LCD tier, which means whoever actually manages to make the MMO nowadays is almost certainly in it only to milk the players for with maximum efficiency, or they won't ever be able to get it to an acceptable state in the first place.
>>4117758Yeah I'm sure the point has been made before but there wasn't as much of an average mmo player back in the day. You had your pvp guys, your hardcore raiders, literal children playing with their families, casual altaholics, random lonely women who liked rping or doing community events, etc. It really was a village. These days mmo players are all the same kind of speed running content consumer because every other niche has a dedicated sub genre that caters to them with much more focus. MMO developers used to very much be obsessed with building actual virtual worlds. Their experiments were largely primitive but the feeling was there, and it successfully captured a variety of people. That's gone now. The development costs are too high so what MMOs remain manufacture a very specific type of skinner box for an extremely proficient and nitpicky audience. SWTOR's role in all of this was mid-decline. Bioware tried something new by mixing in a lot of their single player RPG DNA but this was always an awkward fit. It really doesn't make much sense that it's an MMO. It probably would have been better as some kind of live service lobby type of game where you queue for story missions. The actual persistent game world is an artifact from what was at the time a marketable genre. We might get something like an MMO again that casts a wide net, but it'll probably have to involve some kind of new and amazing technology like how MMOs took advantage of the Internet. AI could potentially be such a technology. Maybe by playing a kind of dungeon master role so we actually get a reactive online world. But current AI capabilities don't inspire confidence, and the general public is growing increasingly hostile to the whole industry.
