Zoomer here. I really like older RPGs, some of my favorites being Wizardry VI and VII.
Now the thing is, I often hear about Ultima as well and one I hear the most about is VII.
I really like the style it has but I just have 1 worry with it and would want to hear more about it: is Ultima VII more so a "historic piece" game in the sense that it was amazing at the time but is nowadays a bland, generic RPG or is it a game that to this day feels unique and offers things other games don't?
Again I don't mean museum piece as an insult just to clarify, basically just asking if I will get something deep either from story/gameplay/world that has not been done since.

Nope. It's a museum piece. Maybe it'll get you some respect points from nerds, and we all know how important that is to our self-esteem.

Hard to put into words and this is all as an outsider, but to me some of the Ultima games seem like again they were marvels at the time but now are just barebones.
Interestingly though as you see I like the older Wizardry games, including V but that is because there is this really engaging gameplay loop and I love drawing the maps.
Idk how much Ultima offers fun combat, good map design etc. but even if VII still excels at one aspect even today I would give it a shot.

With RPGs I always wanna ask first cause they are bigger time sinks, if it was something like a Castlevania game would just give it a try.

Ultima VII is a good adventure game with a great story and an interesting world to explore that feels alive. It's also a sub-par RPG with poor combat, character progression and itemization.

>they are bigger time sinks
It has a fairly self-contained opening act (a murder investigation) that gives you a good idea of what the game is about. Try playing until you're allowed to leave the city of Trinsic, at least.

Eh. Ultima games are the grandfather of RPG, but they're very difficult to get into. You'll have more luck from U4 onward, maybe.
>>
>>4110926
Oh that actually sounds pretty good. Might give it a try soon then if that's the case.
It feels like sacrilege at this point having played so many older RPGs but not a single Ultima so I really wanna see how it is.
Also I guess a little off-topic, but since I hear about Ultima Underworld often too, would you say giving it a shot is worth it too? Every time I see the Ultima games VII and Underworld always capture my interest most from a visual standpoint.

>Ultima Underworld...giving it a shot is worth it too?
Definitely, just for being the granddaddy of first person 3D RPGs and a good dungeon crawl in its own right.
I recall it having very clumsy controls, though. I've read that "Ultima Underworld Portable" has mouselook + WASD, but I haven't tried it myself.

BTW, regarding Ultima VII, you'll probably want to play it through Exult.

The absolute state of modern men. 100 years ago, men used to charge machine gun nests.

I didn't watch any youtubers you insufferable faggot, I just look at shit that catches my interest by year of release.
Who the fuck even talks about Wizardry VI that much? If anything it gets shafted in favor of the kinda worse Wizardry VII and VIII in a lot of discussions.
Hell, a lot of the Japanese Wizardries get more proper discussion than it.

He's a baiting, spamming namefag. Don't bother engaging.

So you opened up a list of “games released per year” and looked them up one by one to see if you’re interested in them. You’re weird. That’s so weird and cringe. You can’t sit at our table. Can you like find another board to post at?

>>4111203
That screenshot contains multiple original, S-tier takes. You could post a hundred times a day for a hundred years, and you wouldn’t be able to produce something of similar quality.

Take your meds, unc. Shouldn’t you be getting married, buying a house and having children instead of posting on here?

Now, now, don't talk like that. Conservatives need authority figures to instruct them on traditionally correct and moral ideas. They are a very loyal people, like dogs.

100 years ago you would've been mincemeat
>>
Will I automatically like older Wizardry games if I only played and enjoyed 8?
>>
>>4111969
I have more respect for ulcer-ridden fentanyl addicts than for self-identified conservatives.

>>4111973
Today, failed men like you suffer a fate much worse than becoming minced meat in a war. You’re irrelevant, broke, no one respects you, and no good woman will ever fuck you, now and for the rest of your life. You have this in common with all /vrpg/ posters, it is truly the most subhuman of all men that reach this board. A hundred years ago, any man would have jumped on a German stick grenade to avoid swapping places with (You).

Thanks for saving me the trouble of reading all that.
