Zoomer here, I've gotten like 3 hours into final fantasy vii and it's boring as shit, the turn based combat is press 1 button to win and the story is one dimensional nonsense for kids. I have to make Cloud crossdress for some fucking reason. At least the music is good.
Does the game get any better or is it just overrated slop?

>Does the game get any better
No. All the fun is in the 5 hour long action setpiece movie set in the beautifully rendered dieselpunk dystopia on disc 1. After you leave Midgar, the plot loses velocity and you meander around a visually unmemorable world. Combat and character building on the PS1 mainline FFs never become really engaging.

>or is it just overrated slop?
It is somewhat overrated and has become a sacred cow, but parts of the story are pretty good, namely the protagonist twist. The plot was pretty revolutionary at the time.

You might want to try out FF9 and the PS2/PS3 FFs. FF9 is the best PS1 FF game with the story maintaining high velocity for 20 hours instead of 5, though it has the same combat issue. The PS2 and PS3 FFs have more engaging combat (not character building though), but they have some pacing issues.

If you want really engaging combat and character building, then you will want to either check out the latter Trails games (Trails of Cold Steel and Kuro arc) or Tactics games like FFTA2.

You know how 2000s and 2010s movie journalists would all have the same lists of Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, Forest Gump, etc? Or how RPGcodex has the same lists of Planescape, Fallout, Arcanum, Deus Ex, etc? Similarly for JRPG fans who grew up in the 2000s, FF6, FF7, Xenogears, and Crhono Trigger has been canonized in their list and became a sacred cow for them. And then you have people regurgitating that list who might not have actually played that game, played it to get cred, or don't want to get dogpiled or criticized for saying that they didn't like it or it didn't appeal to them.

4chan - especially modern 4chan - is not a great board for discussions. A lot of quality people who made effortposts got filtered out. You will find higher quality discussions on forums.

VII is the kind of thing where, while it may not be the absolute #1 10/10 RPG it's made out to be, it's such a solid and well realized overall experience in a way that's genuinely rare, to the point that I'd be seriously suspect of any JRPG list that *didn't* have it in the top 10 at least, since it would feel extremely hipster to just leave it out despite all of its good to great qualities and general lack of outright flaws.

It's a significantly richer game than something like, say, Chrono Trigger for example.
>>
>>4113686
FF7 doesn't respect the players time and the unskippable FMVs were trash even at the time. Not to mention the loading times for every single combat encounter.

FF games peaked at 5, 6 was ok.

Since you're admittedly young, here's some wisdom for you, kid: You should be saying shit like that after you've beaten the game. Otherwise, you might end up making an ass out of yourself for opening your mouth when
you know nothing, Jon Snow
>>
>>4110929
>>4114114
Seriously though, it's not the best thing ever. We didn't have much to choose from back in the day, in terms of entertainment.
But the fact that the devs decided to make a game that's fairly understandable by the end of it all, still beatable by children ages 10 and above, and etc. etc. speaks volumes as to how/why they were able to become massively successful and how/why there are so many fans of this what you kids call "slop" nowadays.

Games like this can also work as sort of like a comfort food type of game where after you've beaten the game and have familiarized yourself with everything that's going to happen or where/what you need to go/do, you can just relax and easily play through it without it being something that occupies your mind the whole day, especially when you have work/school/life to worry about.

The thing is, if y'all played Final Fantasy VI before VII, you wouldn't be saying what your'e saying. Yes, the crossdressing part is weird. I kept wondering the whole time there why we couldn't just bust in through the front door and beat everyone up like we did in the other previous stages.
But it's kinda like Star Wars, you know. if you watched the original unedited version of Episode 4 for the first time today, you'd see how slow and boring it was, the fight scene between Darth Vader and Obi-wan was the worst thing ever, heck, you'd even be convinced that you're retarded since it's super well-received and a super successful billion-dollar film franchise yet it didn't look like a movie that could beat The Green Lantern in terms of movie ratings.
The point is, that there wasn't anything like it at the time. There's an attempt at making the game replayable with the materia system, there's an effort put in to make this long journey worth it by the end, it's just that you have to finish it before you'd see that.
>>
>>4110929
It sucks until you get out of Midgar into the open world at the end of Disc 1.

some girl who probably never played an RPG was buying a handful of playstation games, i guess she never had a console, this was back at the turn of the millenium when this was believable. anyway she saw this harry potter lookin kid and asked me what game was good. i told her to buy final fantasy vii.
i'd like to think she played through the whole thing cursing and when she got to the end she felt tremendous pride.

no, all of the fun shit gets flattened by the big pizza EXCEPT all of the faggots who miraculously live to torture you with gay bullshit in golden tel aviv. sephiroth convinces cloud to murder aerith and then fucks off into a volcano or some shit waiting for you to fuck him into oblivion using knights of the round + healing combo. it all gets retconned for the most dogshit cgi movie of all time known as final fantasy 7 hd remake.

I'm aware, but 8 is generally considered superior to 7. I'm also aware that stating this directly would ruffle people’s feathers, which is why I limited the claim to its era instead of calling it one of greatest of all time. It leaves people room to cope.
>>
>>4119360
>8 is generally considered superior to 7. I'm also aware that stating this directly would ruffle people’s feathers
I have never heard a single person claim this
And if it were “generally” believed, it wouldn’t be a controversial statement
You contradict yourself
>>
>>4119379
>it wouldn’t be a controversial statement
You forget people idolize and struggle to accept that an inferior product has superiorities. 7 is also afford protection by virtue of its commercial success by reviewers who don't want to back an "unpopular opinion". It's the same shit you see where 'professional' reviewers idolize a studio and insist its products are perfect only for them to flop when they reach the commercial market. People talk shit to save face.

Let me be clear FF7 is a better game than FF8, but 8 does have the superior soundtrack. And I say soundtrack as a whole, not song before you start gibbering muh-wun-win-angeru - angel it's an!
>>
>>4119360
>but 8 is generally considered superior to 7
but the thing is, this is just wrong. certainly there are a few people that think 8 has the better soundtrack, but it's definitely not the majority opinion.
>>
>>4119419
Ranking FF soundtracks between 6 and 9 is basically retarded. Anyone may have their preference or nitpick a thing or two here and there but all of them are S-tier works. Some might include 4 and 5 in that list also.
>>
>>4119712
4 is excellent, but has kind of shrill samples.
5 and 6 both suffer from the inordinate amount of time you'll be hearing certain subpar tracks, like the annoying 5 town theme or the Zozo theme in 6. 5 has very good samples though, and sounds amazing with a subwoofer.
>>
>>4119726
There's no problem with 4s samples.
And there's lot more to a soundtrack than the audio quality. Uematsu is far more notable for his composition than the synthesizer sampling. Personally I don't like the trumpets in 5 but I'm not going to pretend like that invalidates the entire soundtrack.
>>
>>4119758
It doesn't, I'm just saying 5's very clean samples elevate it in my opinion. 4 is the best of the SNES soundtracks in my opinion, but the quality is lower in parts. The high notes on the battle theme kind of hurt my ears when the volume is cranked up.
My favorite soundtrack in the series is 7, and I think it legitimately has worse samples in places than 5 and 6, so I definitely don't think it matters all that much.
>>
>>4119800
>I think it legitimately has worse samples in places than 5 and 6
It's not as bad as that over-compressed nonsense that is 9.

Because it's one of the best JRPGs of all time?
What kind of stupid ass question is this
>Why does /v/ praise one of the best JRPGs of all time as if it's one of the best JRPGs of all time?

I've cleared literal hundreds of JRPGs in my 38 years of worthless life on this planet - practically any and every JRPG that isn't some obscure-as-fuck-JP-only title. FF7 is easily in the top 10.

FFVII is the perfect example of a game that was great for its time and its demographic. You have to put yourself in the frame of mind of a young boy during a summer vacation in the late 90s to really appreciate it. I've been playing it recently and have thought to myself that it would have been amazing if I had played it when I was a kid. The Midgar section in particular is well-paced and is a good early example of a game that feels like a movie in a good way. The early story does a good job of making you want to know what happens next.
That being said, there are a lot of drawbacks to the game. The dialogue and characterization is painfully simple, in part due to the translation and the lack of space. The tight pacing and interesting setting in the first act give way to an empty open world where you walk around slowly fighting battles against trash mobs every three steps or so before going to a town and doing a quest that feels like a distraction. The "great story" is cool if you've never read an actual book. The menus are terrible and clunky. The slow attack animations are cool the first time and tedious every time after that. ATB combat is cancer that combines the worst of real-time and turn-based systems; only someone with a combination of ADHD and Down Syndrome could truly enjoy it. I can easily see myself loving this game as a kid, but as an adult, a lot of it feels like tedious busywork. It was an important game for its time; the fact that other games have surpassed it shouldn't be counted against it.

I'm tired of reading this bullshit. Looking down at vidya because it's not "high art" is how we got to the point that if a game isn't more like a movie, then it's not worth the praise.
There's plenty of books that have hilariously bad stories and even from well regarded authors like Stephen King or Michael Moorcock.

FF7 has a great story and iconic characters. I'm not going to pretend that it's below the likes of iconic pulp stories like Conan or The Godfather just because of it's medium.

agreed. FF7 legitimately has a better story than 95% of books I have read. Better pacing, better foreshadowing, better execution and delivery.
