Zoomer here, I've gotten like 3 hours into final fantasy vii and it's boring as shit, the turn based combat is press 1 button to win and the story is one dimensional nonsense for kids. I have to make Cloud crossdress for some fucking reason. At least the music is good.Does the game get any better or is it just overrated slop?
>>4110929Son come downstairs, dinner's ready!
>>4110929>pre 2000 jrpgYeah it's sloppity sloop
>>4110929>Does the game get any betterNo. All the fun is in the 5 hour long action setpiece movie set in the beautifully rendered dieselpunk dystopia on disc 1. After you leave Midgar, the plot loses velocity and you meander around a visually unmemorable world. Combat and character building on the PS1 mainline FFs never become really engaging.>or is it just overrated slop?It is somewhat overrated and has become a sacred cow, but parts of the story are pretty good, namely the protagonist twist. The plot was pretty revolutionary at the time. You might want to try out FF9 and the PS2/PS3 FFs. FF9 is the best PS1 FF game with the story maintaining high velocity for 20 hours instead of 5, though it has the same combat issue. The PS2 and PS3 FFs have more engaging combat (not character building though), but they have some pacing issues. If you want really engaging combat and character building, then you will want to either check out the latter Trails games (Trails of Cold Steel and Kuro arc) or Tactics games like FFTA2.
>>411101510/10 bait. Pay attention kids, this is how you do it
>>4110929>Zoomer hereYou must be 18 to post here
>>4110929>I've gotten like 3 hours into final fantasy viiwatching a let's-play doesn't count as playing the game.

>>4110960>>4111015then why does /v/ praise it like its the best jrpg of all time?
>>4113678>why do millennials worship their childhood thingsIt's a mystery
>>4113678it's legitimately in the top 10 by just about every metric, and from there it just comes down to personal taste.
>>4113678You know how 2000s and 2010s movie journalists would all have the same lists of Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, Forest Gump, etc? Or how RPGcodex has the same lists of Planescape, Fallout, Arcanum, Deus Ex, etc? Similarly for JRPG fans who grew up in the 2000s, FF6, FF7, Xenogears, and Crhono Trigger has been canonized in their list and became a sacred cow for them. And then you have people regurgitating that list who might not have actually played that game, played it to get cred, or don't want to get dogpiled or criticized for saying that they didn't like it or it didn't appeal to them.4chan - especially modern 4chan - is not a great board for discussions. A lot of quality people who made effortposts got filtered out. You will find higher quality discussions on forums.
>>4113678This whole thread is excruciatingly retarded.
>>4113678VII is the kind of thing where, while it may not be the absolute #1 10/10 RPG it's made out to be, it's such a solid and well realized overall experience in a way that's genuinely rare, to the point that I'd be seriously suspect of any JRPG list that *didn't* have it in the top 10 at least, since it would feel extremely hipster to just leave it out despite all of its good to great qualities and general lack of outright flaws. It's a significantly richer game than something like, say, Chrono Trigger for example.
>>4113686FF7 doesn't respect the players time and the unskippable FMVs were trash even at the time. Not to mention the loading times for every single combat encounter.FF games peaked at 5, 6 was ok.
>>4113839>FF games peaked at 5you were doing good until you said this.
>>4110929Since you're admittedly young, here's some wisdom for you, kid: You should be saying shit like that after you've beaten the game. Otherwise, you might end up making an ass out of yourself for opening your mouth whenyou know nothing, Jon Snow
>>4110929>>4114114Seriously though, it's not the best thing ever. We didn't have much to choose from back in the day, in terms of entertainment. But the fact that the devs decided to make a game that's fairly understandable by the end of it all, still beatable by children ages 10 and above, and etc. etc. speaks volumes as to how/why they were able to become massively successful and how/why there are so many fans of this what you kids call "slop" nowadays.Games like this can also work as sort of like a comfort food type of game where after you've beaten the game and have familiarized yourself with everything that's going to happen or where/what you need to go/do, you can just relax and easily play through it without it being something that occupies your mind the whole day, especially when you have work/school/life to worry about.
