The demo is out. You can play through the first chapter, about 5hrs, and then transfer your save to the full version that comes out October 22.

I'm still on the fence about it.
It's adapted from the mobile game Brave Exvius. I've never played it, so I'm looking at youtube videos for comparisons.

Resonance starts with a new prologue, I think. During some kind of war between Machine and Mages. So it's got a Final Fantasy flare. Then it jumps 700 years into the future, I assume. And suddenly it feels like you're playing a Dragon Quest game.

The writing feels inconsistent. I know it's adapted from a mobile game so the world building will probably be very weak. I was about an 1.5hrs into the game thinking "they didn't put much thought into this, did they?"

they put plenty of thought into it. japs eat this shit up. there's a reason all the isekai anime have the same plot. they literally like generic fantasy worlds with a task from the king more than an actual plot. japs are more normgroids than us by a good margin

when hd2d was new and it was octopath traveler's "thing" i was okay with it but now that they're just absolutely overloading every 2d game they make with ugly ass blurs and depth of field and particle effects and ultra hd art alongside the 40x40 pixel characters i find it repulsive, so i'll probably skip

I'm currently playing Octopath 0 (same mobile status) and I'm thinking the exact same thing. Started off excellent, with actually more story depth than the first two games, which were crippled by their gimmick. But then came the enormous, impossible to ignore, plot holes (and I'm not someone who typically notices or even cares). And finally, just insanely dumb plot twists you'd see in the lowest tier of anime slop.
I'm not sure I've seen a JRPG story fall apart like this before. Are all mobile games like this?

Yeah, like the bad guys spew endless cryptic dialogue and can apparently can teleport to the next plot point, with no motivations or life to speak of.

>Are all mobile games like this?
there is exactly one mobile game with a good story and characters and it's heaven burns red. and even then it will filter 90% of players by how silly and stupid the main character acts at the beginning.

The end of Chapter 1 was weirdly cinematic. Like, it wanted a grand send off it didn't deserve.

I gave this game 3 tries and it didn’t stick with me. I was done by the end of my 2-3 hour play through, I reached the scientist boss in the cave then quit because I wasn’t having fun. The coolest part was the very beginning with the titty witch, but after that it just felt generic and whatever.

The game just doesn’t have this draw that other rpg games I’ve played had. People say that team asano worked on ff resonance, but I can’t find any sources online saying that. I loved octopath, I find that the hd-2d style looks the best there (except for the atrocious depth of field).

I’m not sold on the combat system, the stagger bar felt pretty boring, amd the overall feel was meh. Something about octopath’s boost and break system feels much better than this. I feel like square wants to bait people with nostalgia by having these other ff characters show up. I’m also getting tired of these games having multiverse crossover type stuff in them, I want these games to stand on their own, not have shit like “remember this character/thing from an older game??”.

I’m personally not buying this game on release, seeing how this was once a mobile game but now it’s ported to consoles with some additions and it starts to make a little more sense. I’ll just wait for the eventual octopath 3.

I like how literally every single asset in this image clashes. It looks photoshopped.
>>
>>4122257
It’s the character portraits that clash the scene the most, it’s also distracting and it takes attention away from the scene

A lot of narratives like to open up with bombastic set pieces to act as a hook and set up future plot threads.
Resonance has this shit pay off almost immediately since the crystal bitch saves Rain and the not judges are back to cause problems for whatever reason.
The hows and the whys will probably get explained later on but to say the the tutorial section is disconnected is dumb from what I've played.

It is definitely the worst aspect, but everything is wrong. The font and text, the backgrounds, the portraits. Note how in Octopath, the backgrounds specifically are designed to look like a voxel version of a Playstation 1 or SNES game or something, with low res texturing. The sprites don't look out of place in those games.

>Grandport Nobel Theif sidequest
"Witnesses saw him running towards Kobolo Ruins"

Who are these witnesses? The ruins are behind a mountain. Kobolo is an entirely different island connected by bridge, opposite of Grandport on Lanzelt.

I'm guessing the sidequest wasn't meant to be in Grandport at all. Since the original thief lived in Felicitas, with orphans. But maybe the writers couldn't decided where the the orphans lived?
Because Emma is also technically an orphan, living with her aunt in Felicitas too. Then again, her mother was an archeologist and just happened to be working at ruins at the time.

When they leave from Grandport at the end of chapter 1--why is Emma here? Does she live in Grandport now?

If you play JRPGs, you are a failed man. We need a board exclusively for failed men.

It's the kind of logistics I see in indie rpgs. How are the bad guys moving around? Are they teleporting? Do they have their own airships? Or what?

The player is constantly running into obstacles. Do the bad guys not have to deal with the same shit?

The evil scientist is like "Welp, time for me to head back to Dirnado." So you try to leave from Grandport to Dirnado too. But noooo. The sea is too rough.
>And the evil scientist and dark knights drowned in the ocean. The End
No. You go ask Siren to calm the seas. Siren does tell them that they shouldn't concern themselves with this. "No, really. If I help you I'll be helping them."

You try to rationally analyze a digital toy / e-pacifier made for preteens. It’s like looking at a Barbie doll and wondering why it has no pussy.

The target audience for this game is, at its oldest, middle school juniors, who don’t care about this shit.
>>
>>4122885
The game's audience isn't the same as some european journalist's that want to groom kids.
>>
>>4122855
Octopath makes an effort to have things look more cohesive. One time I was playing the game and noticed that a pillar in hikari’s throne room had a pixel dithering effect to indicate a gradient, they didn’t use a smooth gradient. I know, super specific example but it goes to show how in that game they care about the details but here they don’t.

Speaking of details, octopath’s path actions give npc’s a surprising amount of depth. The towns in ff resonance felt lifeless but in octopath, you can see the stories of the townspeople and buy stuff from them, even their possessions that you could take from them told a story.
>>
>>4122857
>>4122881
Its amazing how much effort you put into thinking about logistics but somehow the basic stuff managed to elude your magnificent mind.
Just bare with me for a second...
So we know that Rain and friends were busy dealing with Siren to sort the seas. Certainly, that would have given Emma enough time to get her stuff together to visit Grandport and see them off prior to their departure. Did you need the developers to spell out the exact details behind Emma's travel arrangements when she's a minor NPC that's used primarily to help contextualize the events of the mines?

And then, as Cloud and company are departing Junon, Marlene comes running down the docks, after hiking across the mountain on foot by herself. Guided by her ordinary intuition. Just to tell Cloud that he's a cool guy.

You're probably wondering how Emma survived? She couldn't even pick flowers outside without being attack by goblins. The answer is simple. She didn't.
She's a wraith now. So sad.

I'll just wait. I don't want to play 5 hour of a game then just stop for 2 weeks.
>>
>>4118887
if only more anime JRPGs had characters that looked like that (and playable and not relegated to an NPC) instead of every character looking like a samey bishounen.

nta, just played a couple hours in FFR and I'm liking FFR way way more than OT0. Without knowing anything else I would guess that people who worked closely on OT0 played their own game and immediately took all the feedback and fixed it by making a better game.

to compare:
FFR has more art; character sprites have 8 directions not 4 and more poses. Characters have more portrait art. It has three difficulty settings, which is huge for someone like me. The combat feels *way* better. The pacing is *way* cleaner. The characters and story appears way more fleshed out, not that OT0 even set a bar, but I did find myself actually wanting to push forward to see the next event. The vision (job?) system it uses is genuinely comfy and enticing. I get to make small choices that matter in nice ways. Locations are usually prettier.

Do I like FFR? I don't know. It really does feel like pixelslop. And the plot isn't deep. But the plot gives me strong FF5 vibes and not in a memberberry way (there's a ton of that but whatever)- I'm not a big fan of FF5 but I know some are. The pixelslop is really bothersome though, like they contrast with the environment weirdly- they just don't feel like a natural element; until sometimes they do because the environment works to match the sprites. It's -weird-

On some fundamental level these games are trying to cash in on the nostalgia of old 2D final fantasies but I get sort of bothered with the knowledge that there's an actual *library* of jrpgs of the 90s and early 2000s that have done the final fantasy JRPG formula deeper and richer than this. I'd say if one was deciding between yet another Four Job Fiesta just to scratch the itch of playing a 4 niggas in a row game, they could pick FFR and be satisfied. i think
>>
FFR is adapted from the mobile game, using some of the same assets. It's a brand new game that loosely follows the story of the first 'season' of FFBE but everything else is brand new from the ground up
OT0 is a remake of the mobile game to get rid of the gacha systems. It's still the same game as the mobile game was, just strung together differently and without the gacha elements.

There is a fundamental difference in the two, They're not just taking BE and stitching it together to make it playable on modern systems. For all intents and purposes it's a brand new game.
