Just how ahead of the curve/curb is Kawazu?
>>4123365Probably behind given that he has not made a new game that is not a remake or a mobile spinoff in over a decade.
>>4123374Emerald Beyond tho?
>>4123365romasaga 2 snes puts 99% of jrpgs that came out after it to absolute shame so
>>4123490I'll take your word for it even though I downloaded that game on my Switch 2 last week
>>4123374>>4123451Even Scarlet Grace is "only" a decade old, not over, two great games, it's not a ton of output, but that's more than Final Fantasy can claim in the last decade
>>4123365Many modern aspects of JRPGs like symbol encounters, learning techniques mid-battle, and menu-based world map navigation can be directly attributed to SaGa. I believe it is also the only series where different races have unique growth mechanics, like monsters eating monster meat, robots gaining stats from equipment, and espers pioneering the signature stat growth of the series.I was also going to say "monsters as party members" but MT and Wizardry 4 already did that.
>>4124282I wish more games had unique growth aspects per each character in a smaller party. I fucking loved the OG Wild Arms 1 for this. Rudy had his ARMs to find and upgrade, Jack got inspiration from various events (some were even optional and required exploration), and Cecilia had both her magic grid to learn spells in any order (well, split into two tiers rather, with you getting the better spells later), but also Mystic letting you cast spells from items and certain equipment. The latter was great because it meant you could hold onto some of your older gear and it would still have use. Furthermore, Mystic could even fill the gaps for some spells on her grid, letting you readjust which spells you choose to actively unlock while locking spells you can just use Mystic for the same effect.
>>4124282>MT and Wizardry 4 already did thatOubliette did that a decade earlier already: you could purchase charmed monsters as hirelings to accompany them into dungeons and fight. The game also features spells to charm existing enemies or summon allied monsters.Avatar (1979) even has MT's monster recruitment mechanic more or less: randomly encountered monsters could join your party if the party leader had sufficient charisma. But yeah, SaGa was still incredibly influential in that part, I am fairly certain Pokemon wouldn't have been a thing if it hadn't been for SaGa 1 on the GameBoy, and I am not sure Mon RPGs could've become that popular without Pokemon. In general, gaming history is not documented well enough and a lot popular games get way too much credit for things they have not invented. The frivolous Pokemon patents show just how far these companies go with the stolen valor all thanks to nostalgiafags and awful game journos letting them
