FF5 or Chrono Trigger
Treasure of the Rudras
Chrono Trigger was just ahead of its time. The other SNES RPGs were really clunky. Especially in terms of movement, the feel weird and sluggish.
>>4125171It’s definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Just a high-quality and polished package overall.
>>4125171What are you even talking about? In your typically SNES game, you hit the directional movement pad, and your character instantly moves one square, with no input lag.
>>4125212Lmao, that’s like saying all platformers and metroidvania feel the same.
>>4125171How many JRPGs are there where you can move through time/dimensions/whatever and do things that affect other areas? Chrono Trigger wasn't just ahead of its time but its near unique even today, which is crazy to think about.

>>4126358Nice to see Lufia 1 get some love. There's a charming odd one I have fondness for call Paladin's Quest (Lennus).
>>4124993the 7th saga
Romancing SaGa 2 easily. If it has to be official in English then it'll be Chrono Trigger.
Breath of Fire 2 Secret of ManaFF5Chrono TriggerEarthbound
>>4126174any game trying to do something similar would just be called a chrono trigger knock-off, or compared unfairly to it.
Final Fantasy IV (2) & Final Fantasy 6 (3)Chrono TriggerSecret of Mana
>>4126174Havent played it myself but isn't Radiant Historia all about time travel and its really interwoven? I've just heard people really praise it.
>>4126914Adding of course that its not a SNES JRPG, but a JRPG anyway.
FF5Live A LiveCTI've never been that big on SMRPG, I always liked PM1 more
>>4124993it's a tough one, I'm stuck between SMRPG and Chrono Trigger. though I haven't played some of the more niche titles like any of the Quintet titles, the Lufias or Breath of Fires before 3.
Romancing SaGa 2Final Fantasy 6Earthbound>>4125151That game has some great battle themes.>>4126358Uncharted Waters: New Horizons deserves more recognition. It's probably my favorite of the various Pirates!-ish games.>>4126503I wish it was better executed in some ways, but I like the game's aesthetics, and it has some cool unique features. More RPGs could stand to have some things that make playthroughs unpredictable, like how the rival apprentices work in 7th Saga.>>4126914It's a decent game, but I found Radiant Historia's implementation of time travel kind of disappointing. There are basically just two timelines that you jump between whenever you encounter an obstacle. It's pretty different from how Chrono Trigger's time travel provides an array of explorable environments/settings.

>>4124993I've heard good things about Chrono Trigger, so I got it on Steam. DS version was far too expensive and difficult to come by from a reliable source.
>>4126127No, he's just saying you don't get tile-based movement systems.
>>4125212Chrono Trigger, in the area maps, feels much more granular and precise than a simple discrete grid square tile map, in contrast to something like FF4/5/6 which are clearly just square tiles (which is what Chrono Trigger’s world map movement also feels like)
>>4127884Yes? Pressing one button to move your character one tile is the opposite of clunky or sluggish or "weird". What is he even saying?
>>4127888I’m not the anon who made the original claim, and while It doesn’t bother me since I played them decades ago, but yes, I see his point in that most SNES era square tile movement does feel a bit clunky. I wouldn’t call it “input lag” since that’s something different but there is an animation as you walk from square to square, and it is sectioned off into large discrete increments.Chrono Trigger feels more responsive since it’s more granular, you can run, and there’s diagonal movement.I dunno man go play SNES Chrono Trigger back to back with SNES FF4 and if you think they feel identical in terms of responsiveness and smoothness then I dunno what to tell you
>>4126580The real problem is that console RPGs abstracted at the level of Chrono Trigger died out. CT worked because you don't need to be autistic about the time travel rules. You can just follow the rule of cool and mostly treat the different time periods as different worlds, linking them through time where it's convenient for the game. In 5th gen and onward, higher verisimilitude and elaborate metaphysics got more popular.
>>4127905No, it doesn't feel clunky. You feel that way no one else does.
>>4127905And I get your point, it's not completely wrong that CT has more granular movement, you are just absurdly overstating it's coming off retarded.
>>4127936>you are just absurdly overstating it's coming off retarded.Feel free to quote the “absurd overstating”, friend. I’m simply pointing out that the games do perceptibly play differently.Like I said, fire up your SNES emulator and go run around in Chrono Trigger then go run around in FF4. It’s plain as day.
>>4127939Yeah, they are different. But that's not what "clunky" and "sluggish" means. "Clunky" means the controls don't do what you want them to do and "sluggish" means either input lag or eaten inputs.
>>4127941>that's not what "clunky" and "sluggish" means. "Clunky" means the controls don't do what you want them to do and "sluggish" means either input lag or eaten inputsI have neither the time nor inclination to continue to argue against one idiot's autistic headcanon that prevents him from having a mutually-intelligible friendly conversation about an old game. Last (you).I just fired up the emulator and attempted the same movements in Chrono Trigger and FF4 (FF2, really, for the pedants).Press "up" and then quickly "left", for the net vector-sum of moving one square up and one square left:Chrono Trigger just works, FF4 eats the "left" movement because it's still in the "up" animationPress "up left down right" rapidly, to walk in a circular pattern:Chrono Trigger just works, FF4 ends up eating one or two of the movements due to animations, either moving "up down" or "up left right"Does that sound like the controls don't do what you want them to do and eaten inputs to you? It sure does to me.
>>4127832I have the DS version but I hate playing on the small screen. I guess I should sell it.
>>4127951Faggot, nobody's disputing your pedantic autism about the movement systems, just correctly addressing your terrible choice of terms. And instead of taking the critique gracefully you are doubling down on stupid.FF4 is a tile-based game. The world is built with tiles. Everything the player needs to interact with is aligned with the tile grid. This means that implementing a pixel-resolution movement system would be BAD DESIGN. It would be clunky and awkward because you'd get stuck on things and it would be less clear where you should be standing to check for interactions. To account for this problem, CT zooms in the world, meaning there's a whole lot less worldspace visible on the screen at any given time, than in any Final Fantasy. CT is a gorgeous game, but feels small compared to its actual peer RPGs. FF6 has a much larger world, despite coming out a year earlier on a smaller cart.FF4 is also 1991. Not contemporary with Chrono Trigger at all. CT is closer to FF7 than FF4 on the timeline. CT is an impressive game aesthetically, no doubt, but it's in line with what anyone would have expected from a high-end SNES game in 1995.The difference between a tile-based movement system and a free movement system should never be described as "clunky" vs "not clunky." They are just different and have different purposes.
no one tell him that Chrono Trigger also very obviously has everything in the world, including all interactable objects like chests, explicitly laid out on a grid of square tiles, and that in order to interact with them, one must stand on an adjacent tile and properly face the objectalso no one tell him that FF6 has the same movement system as FF4, where inputting a directional movement while locked into an animation moving from square to square means that the new input is ignored and lost, like anyone reading this thread can go test this themselves in 30 seconds
>>4126914I'm playing Adventures of Elliot now which is also time traveling. Unclear if it's particularly interwoven though. More like A Link to the Past style so far.
>>4124993FFVIChrono TriggerFFIV and FFVLufia 2Super Mario RPGLive A LiveRomancing SaGa 2 and 3 (haven't played 1 yet)Secret of Mana and EvermoreEarthboundThere's a lot of great ones. My absolute favorites though are Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger.
>>4128116Uh oh melty. Point was already made that CT zooms in the world to make interactions easier. Not all are clearly on the grid. (Eg sparkling tabs on the ground)Chysalis has 8 direction movement, predates most of these games. But sucks. Doesn't feel any better to play than Legend of Zelda, which is 4d movement. LoZ uses a clever auto-snapping system to avoid the issues with getting stuck on things. And yes, you still get stuck on shit in Chrono Trigger, because of the movement system. Fire up an emulator and see for yourself. It's not too bad on the whole, for reasons already mentioned (zoomed- in world, simple environments to navigate with few obstacles). Sometimes it's made to be part of the gameplay, where it's presented as a challenge to sneak by enemies without triggering combat. This just isn't relevant in Final Fantasy games with the more strict tile grid design. FFMQ, for example.
>>4128418>Fire up an emulator and see for yourselfLmao. Full circle.Serious question: do you even remember what the original context of this argument was, or are you doing the 4chins flailing thing where you’re just reflexively arguing like an animal, to the point that you don’t even remember what the goalposts were originally?
>>4126174>do things that affect other areasLike what.
While on other platforms, there will be more variation and debate as to what the top is, on SNES is quite straightforward and not a very interesting discussion.Final Fantasy 5Final Fantasy 4Final Fantasy 6
I haven’t visited /vrpg/ in a while. But is this normal? Like the original post was just an attempt to have a fun discussion about SNES RPGs. What’s with the retarded discussion of Chrono Trigger’s movement system lol? A turn-based RPG of all things. Were the people above just trolling + samefagging? If that’s true, get a life. And like what’s to argue anyways. I’ve played the SNES classics, Chrono Trigger, Lufia, Star Ocean, the FFs. And Chrono Trigger definitely has better movement. The others feel clunky and sluggish.
>>4128589>A turn-based RPG of all thingsIt's not turn-based.
>>4128589>I haven’t visited /vrpg/ in a while. But is this normal?Stupid people wanting to aggressively argue about trivial things they’re wrong about, instead of having a friendly discussion? Yes, quite normal here, I’m afraid.
>>4124993FFIV-VI and OP's pic related are the games I actually beat on SNES; I never finished Lufia II, part of that is my family was poor so I could only rent games as a kid on the weekend and part of that was the puzzles in that game can go fuck themselves. but i remember it being good.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt3XpBqhEyA
