What are some games which blur the line of an RPG, or use blatant RPG mechanics in a style of game that is not typical of the genre?

Pic related. The poster child for a hybrid genre.

I just wanna say that I really love the Hickman's and Weis' Death Gate Cycle. I'm not saying it's the peak of their fiction (that would probably be Dragonlance), but many of its ideas would be peeled by other RPGs. In particular, the Protheans in ME1 having their systems fail while trying to outlast the Reapers is strikingly close to the Sartans having their stasis fail in Chalice when trying to prevent Serpents from escaping Chelestra. It was the thing that introduced me to (real) fantasy.
