How come there are no other games like Mount & Blade?
Kingdom-managers where you roam on the map, encounter characters and bandits en route, and witness a village being burned down.
Compare it to CK3, where you can move on the map, but everything is still extremely capital-focused, and when you make trips, you are essentially doing them in a void, meaning you don't come across other characters in the same province, only random events.
>>
If you stretch the definition a bit beyond medieval kingdoms, there are plenty of living world map roamers. Mount & Blade was inspired by Sid Meier's Pirates in that regard. We've had threads before on "pirates-likes", idk why no one has invented a better term for them yet. Kenshi is another obvious one.
>>
starsector and battle brothers are the only other ones I can think of atm
>>
>>2382489
Closest I can imagine right now is Urtuk which is pretty good on it's own but fights are turn based.
>>
>>2382520
wait you can have a kingdom in BB?
>>
>>2382489
I just don't like battles or Warband.
They take very long, and rewards are very low. At best, you capture an enemy lord, but even that doesn't really matter.
But I really moving on the map, recruiting troops, forcing caravans to pay toll, raiding villages.

>Kingdom-managers where you roam on the map, encounter characters and bandits en route, and witness a village being burned down.
I don't remember individual characters but Port Royale fits this. You have your own "economic" empire.

I thought the genre was privateer-like?

actually it's buccaneer-like

Thanks anon, I heard this term before but misremembered it and it has been bugging me ever since.
>>

There were lots of attempted rip offs that failed. The most direct clones I remember were Veil of Crows and Insurgency, both abandoned vaporware.
The only ones that succeeded were the ones copying the multiplayer battle gameplay only (no overmap/RPG elements).

The reason they failed is because Warband already existed. Even Bannerlord couldn't live up to it.
>>
>>2382489
End of History is very much based on it, with more focus on NPCs doing their own shit, aging and dying in the meantime. It's also a janky as hell early access game.

it's a unique flicked of turkchud genius and cannot be mimicked by lesser races

I have been thinking of making a game like warband but without combat.
But every time I start to plan it out, I stop, because I realize the battles are the glue that keeps the game fun. And if that is removed, it needs another aspect.
Then I start thinking how shallow the game is beyond the military actions.
>>
>>2382489
My hot take is that the main character is the faction.
In Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout the world is the main character.
I think War Sails DLC for Bannerlord tries to do some faction management with perk encounters, but I would have liked to be able to pick specialty units like Triari or Sword sisters the can be trained ie a deeper mercenary path.
I am smitten with the idea of a Fallout NW were I help Davison and his nightkin roam the wasteland. Or I help a group of Vipers or Jackals do raider things. Or I run a faction of robots from a workshop.
I cannot afford the Fallout branding so I will make the game adventures in a cyberpunk world instead of adventures in a post apocalyptic California.

I can't get over the idea of "What would you do if ..."
you ran a group of NCR or Legion deserters and had to react to the war?
you had a group of power armor capable raiders reacting to a war surviving at the fringes?
you had a group of chem pushing caravaners reacting to a hostile world?
you had to keep a gang of bikers going through the post nuclear war world?
you have to keep your group of tribals going somehow?

S&Box comes out on the 28th my plan is to learn C# and make a game that will have fun combat and have customized factions like HOI 4 OWB, where the faction story is the main story.

The world will be cyberpunk, it will be a sister world to Judge Dredd universe, or at least Judge Dredd will fit into it via special encounter like in Fallout Tactics.

>How come there are no other games like Mount & Blade?

It's going to take me 3 years at best to do this. If I win the lotto I will make a game with the money. Kenshi 2 will likely release before I can finish. Oh well maybe the ideas will make a good mod for it. I am really tired sorry for typos.

>Kenshi is another obvious one.
Kenshi's world is completely static and absolutely nothing happens in it without the player input, and the player input itself is extremely limited. All you can do is kill some named NPCs to make a couple villages flip faction ownership.

There is also Total Conflict Resistance although its EA as well

are we talking about the same sector? you know, the one on the star? the one that has space ships destroying each other in space and letting space ship debris all over space?

someone should make a mount and blade style game where you're a businessguy who travels around the land doing odd jobs, then starting businesses, and eventually becoming the CEO

looking at bannerlord, it seems the game is too complicated to make that even they themselves can't recreate warband's soul.
>>
>>2382489
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 does this as well. Time flows like a paradox game, and battles are similar to Total War but with about one extra layer of abstraction. Basically Mount and Blade but with moment to moment gameplay that feels more like Crusader Kings. It’s a little bit more more speed, feels very similar in tone to Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

>>2382512
Yeah Pirates is great, but I think Mount and Blade is a bit better. I definitely appreciate how much more forgiving Pirates is compared to most other strategy games.
>>
>>2390695
>feels very similar in tone to Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
What do people mean by this?
I mean, LOGH itself was very clearly inspired by ROTK (book). But I have seen people refer call Stelaris "similar in tone to LOGH".

Starsector
>>
>>2388902
Stronghold.

There's also a mod called Player Hideout which is much more simple if the only thing you want is a place to save your stuff and Bros.
>>
I've sampled each of Bannerlord, Starsector, and Battle Brothers for 100 hours, and Battle Brothers ended up being the only game that became more interesting over time instead of getting more boring. The tactical part of both Bannerlord and and Starsector isn't very interesting and at the end of the day, the only reason to play either of those games is for the rape mods, which is fine if that's what you're in to, but this is Video Games/Strategy and not Video Games/Rape.
>>
It's a little gauche to call Noldor Twilight Knight spam rape in current year, but then again, this IS 4chan.

As an officer, it opens up a lot of gameplay options like forming professional and personal rivalries against other officers, overseeing the professional development of your subordinates and leveraging patronage networks to form voting blocs and foment power within your faction, regularly engaging in heated debates (with fairly in depth gameplay mechanics to support this) about battle tactics and logistics management, receiving orders and having the autonomy to decide how to carry them out / ignore them / be a total overachiever, and having to choose between continuing to fight for your former leader’s dumb ass son when he dies or switching sides for something better. In short, it has the exact granularity of scope as LOGH. Zoom out one level, and you have Crusader Kings, zoom in one level and you have Command and Conquer.

I never played Stellaris so I can’t speak to that
>>
>>2394658
Rape was part of Medieval warfare. And pirates would definitely rape.
>>
looking for a specific warband mod (may have been prophesy of pendor but not too sure), the only things i remember about it is that it was in a fantasy world and one quest had you discover an abandonded castle/settlement that was previously hidden and make it your home base (i think there was also some flavour text on how it was destiny or smth) Any help pls?

I wish it was anything like M&B:W. In reality you never see diplomacy change over time, factions take over and lose settlements, faction leaders move their asses out of their home leading armies and potentially getting captured (and escaping).
>>2382520
>starsector
With nex I guess it gets closer to M&B:W. Vanilla has very little to do with it. Planets don't change factions and faction leaders never leave their homes.

The thing that made Warband work was seeing the NPCs leading their own bands out there in the field, fighting their own wars and pursuing their own objectives regardless of what you do.
You could sit down without doing anything and witness two factions at peace with each other suddenly declare war, then one king musters his nobles and leads an army, they win a battle against the other kingdom and then start a siege, but ohshit the siege goes badly and the king from the first kingdom ends up captured.
That's a story right there. All fully dynamic.

Kenshi and Starsector don't do this because they are player-focused games in which you are meant to be able to experience everything in a single playthrough. This wouldn't be possible if, for example the UC killed the Phoenix, so now you can't do it, or if you wanted to join the Persean League but Kazeron got randomly satbombed by the Luddic Church.
Mind you, out of these three games I think M&B:W is the worst, actually. The idea is just brilliant but the execution suffers a lot due to how shallow diplomacy and combat really is.

there is a mod that does this for starsector.

how would (you) improve diplomacy and combat?
i think the combat is great. the greatest even.

It would be if actually lead to somewhere.
Capture of monarchs is completely trivial, same as capturing but bit more money.
You'd capture the monarch would lord queen consort, becoming regent, trying to collect ransom money with extra taxes on vassals, and maybe that triggers some of the lords revolt and declare for the claimant.
