Depends on what you want, most think Necropolis with Gauldoth has the best story because MUH NON-EVIL NECROMANCER snowflake character.

Haven - Lysander's story is probably the most basic and babymode you can easily build any overpowred hero with him.

Stronghold - Waerjak is a whatever you can level him to so much you can solo the final map without an army.

Asylum - Tawni's story is probably the most interesting on its own but since you are playing pirate there are a lot of water maps which are just terribly designed.

The rest I don't remember.

Also iirc barbarian campaign was really short. Just three missions long. I don't know why. The connection to Heroes Chronicles in form of Tarnum was kinda neat tho.

The order campaign is about gathering refugees from the armageddon into a faction and defeating some local tyrant. Think Solmyr was working for him but defects.

Gathering Storm campaigns are just artifact hunts and then killing the big bad in the final one. Wings of War is everyone pushing towards the capital where secrets of immortality are. Gathering resources in early maps, dealing with the local defenders and then the big finish as free for all in the capital.

I'll never forgive this game for mixing up Necropolis and Inferno.

Anyone knows if there's any place with all the campaigns' text events stored or how to access them from the files of the game? That would be useful.

Gameplay wise Necro because Gauldoth has the Demonology which allows him to summon a lot of demonic units.

Elves and the Order are cool, the Knight is easy, and Barbarians and Pirates are the hardest.

Story wise? Probably Pirates and the Order.

then you open Homm2, 3, 5 or Olden Era

Do yourself a favor, this game is a clunky piece of shit with uncanny designs. Troops move in unpredictable ways on the battle map

The Half-Dead is great. My favorite necromancer story till this day. I liked all of the factions except might.

It's a better campaign than The Gathering Storms. The story is trash but the gameplay is quite goog. TGS had too much boring fights against neutral units at the ending.
