Firefly captured lightning in a bottle with Stronghold and Crusader, and everything since then has been garbage (with the possible exception of 2). Why is it apparently impossible for them to get it right again?
And why have no indie devs tried to fill the niche? There's a huge market for it.

Honestly ALL they need to do is just make Stronghold 1 but with more content. And I don't mean more missions and maps and the same shit as usual, do something that breaks the mold of "this could literally be made in the map editor 20 years ago". For example make more "factions", think how Crusader had Arab troops and some Arab buildings.
You could even make it somewhat exclusive to your lord selection, fuck, you could branch out and turn it into full blown Total War where you fight over Europe as specific countries with unique units and buildings but get to build cool castles and have fights that aren't just spearmanni lines vs spearmanni lines. Make it ambitious again, not just the same thing again but literally worse in every way. The other Strongholds didn't fail because they were trying to be more than S1, they failed because they tried, and succeeded, at being less than S1. Oh, and do large maps so the castles aren't five centimeters from each other. The Demo looks like they're fucking tiny and that second one makes me worry it's going to be "you are limited to building on specific fucking hills" like it's Warlords or wherever that stupid ass idea originated in.

Looks fine for an alpha, the bird eye view looks fine until you zoom in. Units and structures look like caricatures and the sliding on the ground walk animation is just horrendous.

No, they just did Stronghold 1 again without any new content.

Just because they decided to pick flat as fuck maps and suck at building aesthetically pleasing castles doesn't mean it's impossible within the Stronghold 1 framework. Crusader was honestly the biggest offender since they tried to make it "balanced" for multiplayer and gave everyone a flat as fuck plain to build on.
But sure, you could just make it so you can make variable height walls and you're already winning a lot in that department - I believe Stronghold already supported this to some degree, since there's no functional difference between Crusader's full and half walls and in terms of pathfinding and such people building custom maps have always used hills to manage wall height. IIRC if you put down a wall on a cliff it would even get a wall texture all the way to the bottom.
Aside from the castle in your picture not being on a grid so it's possible to have many different angles, not just 90 and 45 degree walls, there is nothing in it that would be impossible within Stronghold 1. It's just a castle on a hill.

Can be either new or added from later titles.

I'd like to see engineers rebuilding walls during sieges like in S2 where they have to carry stone blocks to the damaged/destroyed walls.
Of course repairs without enemies present could still be a simple build command.

Something new would be offensive stone logistics during sieges.
Catapults and trebuchets having finite ammo is nice. You can still create a doom stack that deals with any defense easily, but you can't use them to continuously bombard choke points.
What I'd add is a building of some kind which in a radius supplies siege engines with stones.
Each engine starts with 10 or 20 shots, but then has to move near the supply to restock.
The supply itself has a finite amount of ammo, which needs to be restocked by oxen.

So, building the siege engine in the field by engineers gives it initial ammo.
Then you have to build a siege supply depot, which starts out empty.
When it is built, oxen which are currently unoccupied carry stone from your stockpile to the depot.

This way the defender can raid the stone supply to hinder a siege and the attacker has to preemptively place the depot so it can be filled before the attack begins.

Honestly I think people just need to revisit all the games. I'm starting to think maybe the others aren't bad and that fans really are just retarded. But I've also never played anything but Crusader because I never had much interest in the series in general so I can't say to much. I just find it odd that there are all these games that apparently are garbage but they keep making them and people keep buying them.
