I really want to go back and play Civ3 again for some reason. Is this a bad idea?
>>
>>2424341
You remember it being really good? Why not keep those memories as they are instead of challenging the nostalgia with reality?
>>
>>2424591
probably because he wants to play it, and also because realizing a game wasn't as good as you remembered it doesn't retroactively make your memories of it bad
>>
Civ III was a good game. I went back and played it recently because I was fairly young when I played it the first time and didn't understand a lot of the mechanics. For example I always built cities on plains and cut down ever single forest to make farms, then wondered why it took 40 turns to build anything.

Well, at least you sort of understood that mass-deforestation is how you win civ. Nature is the enemy. Especially jungles/rainforests.
>>
>>2424591
you know, maybe it wasn't so bad
better pop management, ICS (good), being able to bomb tile improvements, climate change are features that newer civs sorely miss
the combat system sucks ass though

depends on if you can get past how utterly awful the corruption mechanic was

Then just play it? Personally I love the way old Civs are, like easy to play but hard to master. And the historical maps are really cool, I like how so many units have a historical name attached to them. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but they make it feel so much more immersive.

doomstacks, ai plopping cities in that 2 small squares and fucking over everything...

Civ 3 is great. Has some annoying parts in it but so do all games in the series. It's aged fairly gracefully.

Be sure to get this exe mod that adds a bunch of QOL improvements, like preventing the AI from violating your borders with settler spam.
>>
>>2426249
you know you can do the same thing, right?
and have you tried bombing doomstacks?

its better than anything after V
In some ways, its better than IV and V
>>
>>2424591
It still holds up, I quite like it. I’ve always loved this one, played it on launch and still check it out once every year or so.
>>
>>2426249
People really exaggerate on doomstacks. I wasn’t a fan myself but they were just annoying, not broken.
>>
>>2424341
only if you're too lazy to fix up the UI on a modern machine, last I checked it was fucky I think with diplomacy or notices I forgot what
>>
>>2427297
get C3X districts too

>>
>>2424341
No. Play with a few friends if you can, I've had a few entertaining plays with mine just a few years ago.

I remember having to manage 30+ cities late game and my desire to play evaporates

The districts mod is part of C3X. You don't need to download anything separately, just enable it in the configuration file.

Skill issue. Why does everything need to be made easier?
>>2429603
Why would I want districts? The beauty of Civ3 is that it isn't a bloated mess like subsequent titles in the series
>>
The Heroes 3 and LotR mods are sick, the former in particular really transforms the game. but it's a pain in the ass switching between them. With civ4 thankfully you don't have to swap anything in and out

Well, I went and did it. Even got my first Regent win even if it was kind of a cheap one.

yes, the ai is playing poorly in a very annoying manner. it should play well instead.
