Playing like the devs intentedPrev: >>2403915
Is the campaign worth playing?
>>2428386Why are you posting pictures taken by phone?
>>2428396Which one?
>>2428396I only ever played the Khmer one and it was pretty fun. I tried Joan of Arc and it was so fucking boring. The game just isn't for me.
>>2428415You tell me. I only care about the economic management side of the game.
When is my irrelevant shithole being added
>>2428410its a picture of a high res CRT running the gamehow im supposed to show it with a screenshoot?
>>2428510no anon you're right, your unique european country with rich history and beautiful architecture and soldiers is a shitholewhat we REALLY need right now is a 10th variation of chink, wetback or african
>>2428557>its a picture of a high res CRTI didn't notice it. Frankly, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference even if you were lying.
>>2428568>beautiful soldiersyeah i fucked up. shit on me, i'll get ya next time
>>2428568literally the whole fanbase of the game complained about 3K because they made 3 entires "new" civs based on kingdoms that barely lasted 30-40 years and were irrelevantguess fucking what? every single european kingdom that doesnt fit that description ALREADY IS IN THE GAMEso seriously, i dont know what the fuck you guys expect more to add from Europe, that isnt "split into these very niche specific shortlived towns" or isnt just the same civilization but from a 400 hundreds years earlier / later
>>2428396Most of them is worth playingBurgundian, Lithuanian and Polish campaigns are all excellent
>>2428396The missions feel pretty hit or miss, id like em more if they had more variety.
>>2428720We shouldn't split, we should re-merge
>>2428396Pretty much every one, except for Tariq, is worth playing (which is a shame because he's a neat guy)
>>2428720Swiss Confederation (Helvetians) have the same relevance as Bohemians Some Slcaveni (Croatians, Serbs, Albanians) umbrella would be neat to spleet up the "Slavs" umbrella and fill the gaps in the west Balkans (unless you consider the Bulgarians as filling their umbrella)On that topic, differentiating between Slavs and Rus would be good, since we've gotten more Slavic politics since The Forgotten. I guess that's why people want Vlachs tooBut that's the most I get get out of europe without being any extraneous bloat. I don't see any value in spleeting the AoK euros, they're pretty good umbrellas (with Goths being any backwards barbarian), and there are plenty of dumb, redudant requests that can't be solved with adding a unique regional/unit variant over a UU and brand new civPersians should get Central Asian architecture and Byzantines, Armenians, Georgians, and Bulgarians a shared set as well
>>2428396I only play single player. I've played the majority of campaignsKotyan Khan, Ivaylo, Grand Dukes, Le Loi, Algirdas and Kestutis, Jadwiga, El Cid, Barbarossa, Francisco de Almeida, Tamerlane, Genghis Khan, Tamar, Thoros II, Rajendra, The Hautevilles are my personal favorites so far. Amazing story, characters, very fun scenarios. Kotyan Khan is THE standard imo of how to do a AoE campaign.Attila the Hun, Vlad Dracula, Pachacuti, Joan of Arc, Saladin, Tariq ibn Ziyad, Prithviraj, Sundjata, Devapala, Pachacuti, Suryavarman I, Yodit, Edward Longshanks, Jan Zizka, Saladin, are enjoyable campaigns, the story might be engaging, but the scenarios aren't very fun, or one or two scenarios are boring to play.Gajah Mada, Bari, Sforza, Alaric were boring to play, only finished because i am a completionist.THe story sucks, the scenarios suck. Sforza stars out ok, then it gets boring fast. Alaric is just a grind all the time, besides the siege of Rome it sucks ass. The rest i haven't played yetI ahve also completed all Historical Battles and Victors & Vanquished scenarios, but i woudl have to do a separate ranking
i do wonder if handcannoneers will ever get (another) buff like they have in the past? maybe someday.
They truly fumbled AoE 4. Why set another game in medieval times? They should've made AoE 4 set in 1800 until the dawn of ww1
>>2429007not only that, but they made it ugly and with heat seeking arrows. Why compete with the GOAT, Business people are retarded, they remake good games and fail because they can't compete with the artistry, but they ignore great concepts that were implemented poorly because they only look at numbers.God I have such utter contempt for the ruling classes incompetence.
>>2428949honestly rather this than the splitfaggotry from here
just beat moderate CPU for the first time
>>2428720>>2429022Hey screw you man, aoe4 as a sequel to aoe2 should and would have worked if they hadn't made the game atrocious to look at. A lot of people want aoe2 without the bloat (in terms of civs and mechanics) and I'm sure no one would mind civs who are actually different. What people didn't want was reskinned aom units and mechanics and matrix aesthetics and retarded looking units, in terms of both design and graphics. Half of the time the units look like plastic. The other half, like plushies
>>2428720Yeah sure, splitting civs suck and irrelevant civs suck, but if that's the case we should be done with adding civs altogether. You can't seriously say that the game needed 10 different American civs. Can't say that it's fine to have 5 Indians all riding a different type of camel, but also that it's not a problem for an entire slab of continent across 1000 years to just be "Slavs". That HRE should only have 1 civ which barely represents them properly. All the different houses of knightly Franks fighting each other, and there's only one civ to represent them with a fucking viking axeman as their unique unit. Same for the Brits.
So...nobody will challenge Hera?Fucking hell, back when Viper was winning anything, Hera rising up was awesome, but enough is enough. Are we goign to have to wait for Hera to reach his 30's and lsoe his agility with the keybaord and mouse for others to start winning the big tournaments as well?
>>2429122Congrats on completing the tutorial
>>2429181he got challenged in the last 2 tournaments
https://poal.me/3supoFinal /aoeg/ spleet poll. After this, we can no longer discuss new civs
>>2429232Enough with the new civs, and the 3 kingdoms should be single player only. They seem extremely overpowered too, i saw Hera destroying 7 noobs with Wei Make more campaigns, every civ deserves a campaign.
ARE AOE 1 3 OR 4 PLAYABLE TODYA!? WORTH PLAY TIME SPENT?
>>2429274>1 Only if Vietnamese>3No>4 Yeah
>>2429313>3>NoEarly modern warfarebros...
>>2429274Yes, AoE 3 DE looks amazing. And thr campaign is awesome.I don't knwo if the latest dlc's are any good, because i never bought it.
>>2429505saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar
>>2429270>Make more campaigns, every civ deserves a campaign.Agreed. I still can't believe there's no Japanese campaign.
>>2428720>every single european kingdom that doesnt fit that description ALREADY IS IN THE GAMEno?
>>2429270>They seem extremely overpowered tooNah, a catapult galley (but china) being stronger than a galleon armed with cannons is perfectly normal.
Spiffinghaters??? Our response???
>>2429566This was the expected result, red phosphoru cheese is +500 elo, the other teams should have told their low elo legends to just cheese for some points
>>2429566If Hera decides to host another tournament then people are just going to double down on phosphoru strat. This reminds me how I was briefly arguing with some retard 2 weeks ago about it and he said he doesn't believe in the concept of elo inflation.
>>2429274aoe3 is playable and worth it
>>2429270>every civ deserves a campaign.Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Turks, Vikings, and debatably Celts, Magyars, and Slavs that don't have a campaign.
All version of aoe2 are clearly the superior entries of the franchise
>>2429645Correct, as well as the Jurchens and Khitans. OG theories were that 3 Kingdoms was going to be an East Asia megapack to involve their stories but it all went to Rot3KThe Puru and Thracians as well, if you count Chronicles, but Alexander had only room for one mission each
If we are lucky microsoft is cancelling the next aoe2 dlc
>having alot of fun with aoe4, finally found a game i can keep playing instead of hoping from singleplayer to singleplayer.>4k hours, steadily getting better at the game>suddenly after a patch, i start getting this weird error that half of my matches, randomly it wont let me move at all or make units, i can only use the chat and ping until the game "kicks me out">sent a ticket for the problem, and reported the problem on the official discord in hope for a fix.>got the automated mail equivalent of "did you try disconnecting and reconnecting your modem?>hoping for a patch to fix it, and asked my isp to check the connection>ISP fixed an issue, and patch fixed another issue, next match went well.>rest a bit, then i start another game>same problem as before, despite the fixes.Guess all good things come to an end, thanks devs for that nice patch. Guess ill have to play Company of Heroes now
>>2429673>Jurchens and KhitansAll the Three Kingdoms civs don't get a campaign? Well that's fucking lame.>>2429645I guess it's worth mentioning that Vikings get a whopping six scenarios between V&V and BotC. A lot of them are really gimmicky and/or have scenario-specific mechanics, and they're pretty samey, but it's something.
>>2428867I can agree with Helvetians, Sclaveni, and Vlachs and renaming Slavs to Rus/Ruthenians. I guess I'd only add renaming Italians to Lombards. But anything more than that is really unnecessary like a Celt/Italian split or adding Basque or Finns or something. That said devs are lazy fucks and making new civs or civ updates shouldn't take this long.>>2428568You give racism a bad name by being so retarded
Order of the Dragon
>>2429904>You give racism a bad name by being so retardedOh yeah? Why?
>is there any game where you don't want to build 2 houses and go to sheep. is there any other potential opening strategy, does it reward any type of skill, mechanical or knowledge based?no, it's just a standard opener which does nothing other than delaying the fun aspect of the game- except for gimmick civs >is there any game where you don't lure boars? is there any alternative way to gather food at that time, is there a cost of opportunity associated with it, does it reward any type of skill?not really, unless you consider garrisoning a skill- notwithstanding having your boar cheesed by the opponent. >is there any game where you don't look for your other sheep? is there something better your scout could be doing, is there a cost of opportunity, does it reward any type of skill?yes, you could send your scout to the enemy instead to prepare an attack, risking not only losing your sheep but the entire game by deciding to more or less all-in. cheese strat>is there any game where you don't chase after deer to send them to your base? is there something better your scout could be doing, is there a cost of opportunity, does it reward any type of skill?yes, you sacrifice knowledge of the map to gain more easy food.>should any of these be kept in the game?1. no, and the arbitrary order in which sheep are butchered is an antiquated and annoying mechanic 2. no. too much luck involved and simply put a time waster. only there's not much else you could be doing while waiting for vils to come out so it's just an artificial way to keep the player busy while progressing through dark age3. probably not. again, luck is too big a factor, even pros miss sheep sometimes4. maybe, it's a decision you have to make at least, even though, again, too much luck is involved and the mechanic rarely works intuitivelyI guess what I'm saying is that I wish aoe4 weren't shit so I could be playing that instead
>>2429940aoe4 was made for people like you, go play that
>>2429941like i said i would, but it's shit
>Just realized that we did get a game that revisited the ancient history period>It was Age of Empires OnlineHa-ha... damnit.
Yea. I saw the promotional picture on the left and thought that it's the greatest piece of art I've seen in vidya since forever. Great colors and theme. So I download the game to see if I'd like it and this is what I'm greeted with. Your wonder is a goofy ass warcraft 3 farm on a play-dough podium. And those landsknecht, you fucking KNOW they finger each other. What an ugly game. I haven't built a wonder since I was a kid, a thought arose in my head when I finished it of the Romans' hundred day celebration after Trajan's conquest of Dacia. When my villagers went to literal sleep in celebration after having built a three bedroom apartment I felt their reaction was appropriate.Civs for this feel?
>>2430506Isnt AoE3 the only one with good building proportions and size compared to units? My main problem with that wonder is that it is a star fortress, yet used as a wonder instead of a keep.
>>2430527Proportions are the least of my worries. The big issues for me are the textures, the colors and the UI. This game is made for the cognitively disabled and I'm not trying to be funny, before the game even starts it brings up a handicap menu with text to speech, narration, colorblind mode etc, so I can understand pure yellow being 90% of a unit's model in case a blind man wants to tell apart his knights from the opponent's. Even the UI makes sense if maybe a bit challenging to follow for the epileptic audience, but what possessed them to make every surface in the game look like plastic?AoE3 is a beautiful game, yeah, shame about the game
>>2430506>Mongols' wonder in IV is a statue made in 2008This is what I get for mocking the giant tent
>>2429594I don't understand why everyone is using magyars. hera said it's because cavalry uus are easier to use, but wouldn't spanish be better?
>>2431211Magyar uu is so strong because it's like a knight that is half price, it's more about the cost and stats of the unit. Also conqs are trickier because they are weaker against ranged units and require more micro to get value out of
>>2430550next time be a good boy and swallow your hut-on-a-hill without fussing

life is suffering for yamatobros first he got robbed now just plain fucked
looks like a trend is emerging where the meta focused rts pros smash their phosphoru rushing counterpartsI'm taking this as a good sign for my boy uThermal, he's a regular play kinda guy
>>2431673I mean they are rts pros, constant vil production alone will yield a huge advantage vs cheese, never mind other fundamentals. Add to that that coaches will specifically train people against those strats and that the cheesers will never know how to adapt and it's gg from the get-go.Which is unfortunate. Yamato was robbed by undead in w3 and was too busy now to practice properly, my nigga deserved more. At least he'll be back on commentary.
>>2430527Yeah and it's a great example why going for correct proportions is fucking retarded. It looks awful in the game and isn't practical.Games should be approximations of reality tailored to coolness and gameplay, not theoretical replicas.
>>2431623>>2431680I think day9 is a wildcard in this tournament. he has good mechanics but barely any game knowledge.
>>2431698it's unfortunately definitely grubby who's gonna win. I say unfortunately because not only is it boring to have yet another RTS veteran/ multi-time champion win, but the "bromance" between hera and him is just tiring at this pointI'm excited to see how deathnote's gonna perform. I haven't been following his progress but I enjoyed watching his coaching for the warcraft tournament
holy shit this king game

>>2431211The price was changed to 35 food 45 gold, it has 80 HP, 10 attack and 2 pierce armor. Food is expensive to buy and takes a while to set up, magyar huszar is easier to spam than knights and conquistadors
how the fuck did spiffing brit win so much on the ranked ladder lmao
>>2431877Could've had someone play for him, I don't think he played that much. He's been a poser and a scumbag for a long time and glad to see more people recognize that.
>>2431877Maybe he practiced a lot offline or something?
>>24318771100s are shit and red phosphoru strats aren't as common at low elo.>>2431880All you do is drop a castle make magyar huszar, any inbred retard can do that
Fuck, day9 vs grubby is so much fun
W3 is a lot more fun to watch than this
Can't wait for this tournament to get phospheru strats nerfed again so we can go back to an even more stale arabia meta of wall and skirm mirror matches.
>>2431877I watched the Hera vid and he(brit) said that around 900-1100 you can just walk up and drop a castle on your opponent and they quit if you play during the right time of day.
>>2432009How the fuck would you even nerf phos strat at this point? increase food to go up cost? Increase castle cost/build time? I'm down for nerfing house HP.
>>2429921Because experiencing and learning about other people's history is fun and all this talk about mud huts and whatever is not only inaccurate but degenerate because you're making race no more than a tool to shallow materialistic ends. Get beyond victorian era faggotry and learn what proper racism is.
>>2429855Unironically post your problem on Reddit someone will know what to do
I don't use twitch chat so can someone post this link for me tomorrow when day9 is playing?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dqYxpxegrk
>>2429131aoe4's main problem is buildings are not wallsthe consequence is cav cav cav and endless whack a mole
>>2431703I think uThermal will take itGrubby is good, but Thermy is a SC2 elite with serious skills AND has practiced AOE2 before. The only reason we haven't seen more of him up until now is because he ran the ladder race entirely alone, no coaching from anyone
>>2432107what the fuck was the dev's problem with building walls?
>>2432054just nerf the problem UUs, be it with stats, cost, or training time
>>2432009I dont think it will, if anything its proven how weak the strat is in the hands of inexperienced players
>>2432146They already did that. The chariot thingies, organ guns and hussite wagons all got nerfed because of redphos.
>>2432169and as we all know it is physically imopssible to change the stats of a unit if you've already done it once before
>>2432137I'm convinced it was a way for them to do away with mechanics they considered too complex for new players and bad for the game, quick walling in this case. I guess they also wanted to showcase the units' abilities to climb on walls and have players make use of that
>>2432074>all this talk about mud huts and whatever is not only inaccurate but degenerate .Care to guess exactly what the Malian wonder is?>no more than a tool to shallow materialistic endsThere's one word you don't understand and then there's an entire structure which you can't grasp. I'm not sure what goal you're implying I seek to achieve. A materialistic one??Anyway yea I'd say races are "material" since it's genes which make us different, and tanginble things, I don't think they have lesser souls or anything. But my point which I'm sure was obvious was that fundamentally AOE2 is a game about medieval Europe; knights, plate, swords, shields and castles, and the devs ignoring Western knightly civs to bring you 5 different flavors of Indians is an overt insult, slap, spitting, taunting of the player who dares like Europe
>>2432107But actual walls are super cheap so you can still wall you just can't quick wall
>>2428949The Mbutu, they get big spears. The Ngumbu, they throw spears further. The Mdik, they can convert their own villagers to food. The...etc.
>>2432237they didn't use those ideas for the SA civs so it's probably never happening

>>2433134it's funny how nonsensical this post is outside of aoe2 context. Imagine your dad reading this shit
>>2428386>Want to finally buy AoE2 DE to play online 1v1 for the first time since ages.>so many expansions, so expensive>no deluxe edition or something that compiles the essentials into one thing and so you still have to buy either a package with shit you don't need or each dlc individually, $100s of dollars AUD for a remaster of a game from 1999, albeit with interesting DLC (though some old timers do complain about them - I kinda like new OP civs that are broken as fuck because that's interesting to work around having done LAN with khmer civs with friends/senpai on HD)>now thinking about passing on the idea of playing AoE2 againNot easy to find dlcs on steam, they need to fix that and make clear what expansions have been added which are crucial to playing 1v1 online and compile them into one special edition and reduce the price. The situation with dlc in the game is so insane it's putting me off AoE2, which is absurd because new content should be a boon and the devs worked pretty well on them imo.Oh and captureage and shit being so protective of IP shit is also killing things for me, but it's probably not nearly as bad as most other games and it's not even close to how bad microshit gets with squeezing out an audience for shekels. Also having similar issues with Age of Myth retold, which looks good with new shit, but has so much shit now (although new voices suck and I don't really like the avatars for characters).>>2428510I saw they finally divided "Indians" into real empires that existed there which are interesting and cool as fuck. Took them too long to do that and considering MS probably uses jeet devs that's kinda funny it took that long.I'm shocked indians aren't more obsessed with the game though. Same with Chinese players. It's very neutral and stoic politically unlike the pozzed AoE4 which is just wrong on so much bullshit. That said, if it gets more and more civs it could turn things around. Having like 8 when it came out was fucking hilarious.
>>2433154My god I can't imagine how fucking schizoid AoE2 players would sound towards younger audiencies when relating in-game context out loud
>>2429131>Hey screw you man, aoe4 as a sequel to aoe2 should and would have worked if they hadn't made the game atrocious to look at.It could still work if they make it cheaper both price wise and specs wise.Devs assume far too much for performance nowadays and it really narrows their audience. But I like that they're still adding civs. I don't like that they're pulling a paradox interactive with it though. Just add it to the main game. The main game should get cheaper over time right? Well this is an excuse to not do that.>there's more content so we kept the price stable!Instead they INCREASE the price, force prices with DLC and shut down competing open networks so you HAVE to buy the game to use the servers and online content. AoE2 originally was one of the best games for NOT doing this and they've kinda shat all over that with DE. AoE4 is in the same boat. Not good. Especially when LoL and DotA players are just starting to pick it up because they're noticing the unusual strats emerging for 1v1 and group games online with AoE2. 4 is still struggling to get an audience, but it's definitely better than AoE3 on release which was outdated for it's time already (because Total War did what it was doing better), slow and just boring.
>>2429505I still have the boxed gold editions and dlcs of AoE3.I think I played them once and went "this was a waste of money" back in the Windows Vista era.I went back to AoE 1 and 2 gold editions. AoE1 is stupidly underrated as a game btw. It did something AoE 2 didn't do for me as a kid and I liked the antiquity gameplay of AoE1 more than the medieval gameplay of AoE2. AoE1 DE was garbage. It didn't fix enough bugs and instead made more while updating art poorly. AoE2 DE looks much much better though.Mythology got kinda raped too. I don't like the art at all in it. Looks shit. But if it improves the gameplay (because myth always had kinda slow, boring gameplay but a LOT of potential with unique creatures - though I don't like the Titans, they sucked and needed to be weaker).
>>2433190Apparently the younger audience exists and is still growing and that makes sense because I was like a toddler when this game came out and my sister wasn't born or something. Her bf if 4 years younger than her and also plays it. The historical aspect always brings people back to it. It's also gritty as hell for an rts. Blizzard warcraft/starcraft games always felt glowy and fluffy to me so I didn't like them. Diablo 1/2 was ok looking, but not an rts. Dawn of War was better though and Stronghold was interesting too, though far too buggy. What I find interesting is how little the intelligence/subversion/spies/camo aspects of the original Red Alert aren't implemented in AoE2 DE. It's not like they didn't have this in medieval warfare. Things like spies and assassins that used guerilla tactics were a thing then and that's what made medieval warfare more interesting that antiquity warfare - it was the dawn of guerilla warfare. Most people think that's a 20th century invention. The vikings, huns, goths, mongols disagree. Early guerilla tactics arguably destroyed Rome.
>>2433189DE includes all up through Rajas of India/up to Return of Rome. The base price was updated so that it is now the DE: Definitive edition, with LotW, DotD, and RoI included. Sure, they could make new packages for new players, like a Chronicles bundle, RoR bundle, or Age2 focus bundle (MR, 3K, V&V, tLC) but Age2 is a cashcow and they'll milk the DLC. That DE only went up $15 instead of the $30 I paid for those first 3 expansions is fair in retrospect. At least it ain't a Paradox game
>>2433154How about those Turkish BBCs eh? Real effective in the Arena
Why is it so hard for them to implement controlling the camera with the middle mouse button like in EVERY rts ever?

water is wet
>>2433201>it's definitely better than AoE3 on release which was outdated for it's time already (because Total War did what it was doing better)lmao what is this schizo opinion total war isn't even a rts

>>2433189>Not easy to find dlcs on steamclick on the bundle.>make clear what expansions have been added which are crucial to playing 1v1 online and compile them into one special edition and reduce the priceThere are 0 dlcs crucial to playing 1v1. >>2433201>It could still work if they make it cheaper both price wise and specs wise. The game needs a visual overhaul yesterday. Everything from the projections when you build something, to the lightning strike rally point, to the plastic smooth textures of everything, to the offensive elevations which read more like camera lens malfunctions than actual hills, to perhaps most importantly, the design of the units and buildings themselves. There are some gameplay design choices which I personally dislike, such as bonuses like inspiration, or unit abilities, but I'm sure most players would rather have those integrated in a few unique civs rather than 50 civs only differentiated by tech trees. Same as the sweaty nerd deer leashing and quickwallingWIth regards to the price, it's whatever. The game is on sale something like every other month. Why does AoE 1 have reputation of being a mediocre game and overall people recommend skipping it?Shouldn't I play it before installing AoE 2 so I didn't break the ladder of the series?
>>2436294>mediocrewhat kind of retarded imbecile told you that?aoe1 is fun and the only reason to "skip" it is to play RoR which is basically the same thing in a better engine
>>2436294aoe1 is just aoe2 but worse, that's why you can skip it
>>2436294Kid me started with AoE I and ended up with the idea that catapults were still the anti-building siege weapon in AoE II, it ended in disaster.
>>2436294If you want you can play it, it's okay. Two just adds an enormous amount of QoL, the amount RTS games advanced between the few years between the titles was significant. Kinda similar to the jump between WC 2 and 3 in terms of controls.
>>2436294AoE1 is more fun because upgrades are much more meaningful.Centurions can one shot villagers when fully upgradeda Cavalry raid is devastating in early Bronze ageEverything is far more aggressive.RoR is the best though, as having formations, shift-clicking and garissons does wonders to the game.
>>2436294What's the point of AoE1 when RoR does everything better?
>>2436294The original AoE has many of the pains of early RTS and how it controls. How it plays isn't actually too dissimilar, but it's also broken enough that even the Vietnamese need to house rule it, and this is their SC1.AoE II controls a lot better, both rushes and defenses are actually worth a fuck, and also doesn't make all cavalry archer equivalents break the game like a publisher breaking game studios.
>>2436294you should play aoe1 before aoe2 just so that you don't go into aoe1 with knowledge of all the qol features that aoe2 addedlike units marching in formation or being able to walk on top of farms

Yet again I dreamed that I was playing AOE2. I was playing as Croatians and they had a unit called Paladin, but he was infantry. He had an aura I think but I don't remember what it did. Each fight was epic and units were organized in battalions and not chaotically dodging archer micro arrows like ants. The bases were beautifull rather than being 80$ farm with stables scattered around beyond the palisades. I woke up to a shit world where a game like that exists but unfortunately it's not aoe2, but 4, which is a shit game. I want to go back to sleep.

>>2438817aoe4 pro play is so stagnant and tiredi tried to be engaged with it but the meta moves at a glacial pace because all the pros are basically washed up sc2 players who just want to do the same thing over and over againlike the new civ which came out and they all completely shit on it without even really experimentingthey might as well remove all units besides knights
>>2432137In the first year of the game, walls were stronger, cheaper, and faster to build. This made the game much slower as economies were made unraidable. The current cavalry-palisade meta is an overcorrection of this. They quickly eliminated quick walling, but they also made walls gradually more expensive and have lesser health.>>2432107They just need to bring back cheaper walls. Increased construction time is already an economic nerf. Cav meta is much better than the archer, infantry, and siege metas we used to have.
>>2438469Nigga just came here and killed my Age III early Trench Infantry deck before it even had the chance to exist.
>>2438923>they might as well remove all units besides knightsit's usually horsemen but that's because most civs don't have age 2 knights, looks like mobility is best yeah.Currently watching a MAA vs MAA game in the grand final though
>>2438951didn't they design the game from the start so you couldn't make building walls?
>>2438999I don't know what concept they were planning at first but from the trailers it's clear that buildings weren't meant to be barriers from an early stage in development. It would be cool if they reintroduced that in a later civ, like Italians or some other high-urban density civ. But many cultures didn't pack buildings like that 800-1600AD.
>>2438923Not much different to aoe2 pros
>>2438951Same problem in AoE2. Walls are too weak, especially pre-castle so everyone just house walls. It's fucking stupid. Also towers nerfed into the ground because plebs can't handle tower rushes.

I'm playing through Chronicles right now, and while I'm a sucker for the antiquity setting, it's overall pretty mid. Too many of the missions is stuck playing defensively and too with infantry; both of which I hate.
>>2438951We are not in a cav meta retard, we are in a wall and skirm meta. Maybe cav is the meta at your shitter 1200 elo ranked games but at decent elo it's wall and skirm mirror matches every game.

>>2439356And yes, the only reason I like the older ones so much more is nostalgia.
>>2439245AoE2 is at its peak when playing defensively
>>2439265based retard
>>2438989Mobility is king in aoe4 because >>2438951 walling is terrible and buildings are not walls. Infantry tends to be bad in most games outside of niche cases with ranged + cav usually being best but in aoe4 is it really bad since maa aren't really even economical.Siege meta was absolutely miserable but I really wish the game had more structure and less running around like a hunnic horde trying to rape villagers. My pet idea is that some buildings should function as walls but not all of them. Basically, military buildings would connect with walls to make walling easier but houses, mills, etc would not to create a kind of halfway house between aoe2 walling and what we have now. I don't like quick walling as a mechanic but aoe4 is so horribly unstructured.

>Did they broke something in AoE III recently?the game must be surprised someone is playing
There was an aoe3???
AoE 3 is a good game, and the campaign design is especially good. Much better than aoe2 aok/tc
AoE3 is a famously disappointing gameMight actually be primarily remarkable for its predecessor reawakening to completely outshine it from ~2019 onwards.
>>2440233yes but Hera hasnt ruined it yet
>>2440256>campaign designI fully believe AoE3 would've been at least decent if it had AoE2 style campaigns instead of that bullshit family story shit with made up factions.>>2440260This. Even decades later it's still so shit. A big shame because it looks cool and the soundtrack is absurdly good. I keep listening to it while working because it's best to consume it outside of the game, sadly. Not only it's kinda ass in many ways like home cities, cards, neutral camps, tiny maps, no resource dropoffs, weird upgrades, no conversions, annoying mechanics, unnatural unit types/dmg, but it is also very broken for melee units. Charging cavalry always slows down before engaging, infantry sloooowly throwing fire at buildings is unclimatic and even though cannons are cool they sometimes deal no damage and behave strangely.
AoE3 is an AoM sequel with a historical skin, not a follow up to AoE2. And it's perfectly good as such. If they had properly communicated that it would had been much better received.
>>2440368>No no you see we INTENTIONALLY made it mediocre, if only they understood this

Medieval Age of Empires was a mistake. The age system was clearly designed with the ancient ages in mind (Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age). The ages in all other Age games after the first one (and in Chronicles) are trying to fit the cylinder into the square hole.
>>2440909Yeah AoE2 turned out to be such a disaster, what a mistake

>>2441185That's the snaring effect, and yeah it's micro garbageHuntables are so good, it's impressive. I think the African farms that are 3-1 (rather than everyone else's 10-1) strike a better kind of balance in comparison to other titlesThe Iroquois and Lakota are fine for classification, it's the Aztecs and Inca who fuck things up. It's part of the problem of the game covering both the 16th and 17th explorations but also the long 18th century so you have the full range of differing tech experiences. If they unified unit types (ala Age2) better as "euro triangle" "meso/south triangle" and "american indian triangle" and played with those types because a Musketeer, Tomhawk, and Jaguar Warrior are all "heavy infantry" who can fulfil the same role in different ways

QUESTION:Do you find building mills for hunting animals bothersome? I would love to have to see designated building such as "hunting lodge" which would be designed for hunting / gathering / fishing.I don't want to turn it into AoE1 storage pit which defeats the purpose of AoE2 eco buildings.>just git gud with handling gaia units It feels like more of exploit turned into meta playing. Luring boars with quickwalling is one things, then there is using scout to push deers. And now building wall line to exploit chicken pathfinding.
>>2443253I find it so stupid I often just send vills to gather deer in groups that can carry all the food back. Like 3 or 4 depending on wheelbarrow.

>>2443253Wouldn't that be just as bothersome as building mills? Unless it was a reduced/free cost, it would just be the same issueUnless you're thinking of some kind of Age3 granary that attracts Hunt to it, reducing the need for pushing/luring, that'd be a worthwhile addition
>>2443258I just want to reduce lure mechanics, because right in order to stay up on the pace with top players:- luring boat with villager, w/o loom and using quickwall/scout to block getting hit- using garrison switching to increase DPS on boars- using scout to push deers closer to TC- building wall to funnel chickensWhile doing this stuff is admirable show of micromanaging it feels bad on paper.>>2443926Yeah, 50 wood, i.e. half of mill cost. It would at least be less frustrating to build it in the middle of blackforest for 3-4 boars OR building it around chickens.Any bonuses nicely seen, or maybe the other way around. Without this building there is a penalty for gathering meat. Just taking guesses. Anything but luring to TC.
>>2443939I think boar luring is integral to the game and feels quite natural to do, you can pull it off in many different ways without needing extra micro like garisoning or palisades. But deer luring feels awful, takes away scout time and half of the time just flat out doesn't work.

Do AoE2 player like how micro dependent the game is? As someone that's not super into AoE2, but likes rts in general, watching something like that game 2 between Hera and Liereyy, where they're just playing a micro minigame with units that oneshot each other for 20 minutes feels super grating.
>>2444348it's only micro dependent at the highest level. macro consistency and understanding matchups are king.
>>2443253>Do you find building mills for hunting animals bothersome? No.>It feels like more of exploit turned into meta playing.Luring animals is not an exploit>Luring boars with quickwalling is one thingsI will concede this one> then there is using scout to push deers. How the fuck would you consider this an exploit is beyond me> And now building wall line to exploit chicken pathfinding.Yeah that one is retarded
>>2444380>How the fuck would you consider this an exploit is beyond meHow the fuck is it not? It would be one thing if the scout killed the deer and then could transport the corpse back. Standing behind an ai and tediously guiding it towards the direction you want is obviously not intended and only became standard due to minmax weenies abusing it over a period of literal decades. Deer are obviously not supposed to be pushable, just look at how they freak out and run back to their starting point if you push them near a treeline.
>>2444380>> then there is using scout to push deers.>How the fuck would you consider this an exploit is beyond meMy understanding is the gaia AI wants deer to run away from humans which is understandable.Casual scenario- Villager goes for hunting- when deer detects that some player is close OR gets hurt it runs away- when there is no danger for a longer time it WALKS back to original respawn (it actually ignores danger detection)Experienced player scenario:- scout cav moves selects the angle of approach (north, west...)- move towards deer- deer runs away as player intended, such as TC / mill- repeat again at it gets close enough to TC / mill- the only "penalty" for player is slow and scout cav does not trigger deer again, thus deer WALKS back to original respawn>>2444396It's especially funny, when the pushing is triggered more than five consecutive times. Kudos for micro, but this is just poking fun at devs.Let's not forget that devs decided to finally change critera for expiring the meat. If they change some ancient rules regarding that, then why not go for more?Don't get me started at fishboom now... Another story.
>>2444400Fishboom is mostly just the devs failing to anticipate minmaxers again. Being able to effectively make food villagers while your TC is already running or aging up is incredibly strong. To fix fish boom I would just make fish traps take up a 4x4 space like farms do. Probably wouldn't fix it entirely but it would stop retarded shit like fishing on black forest.

>>2444571All jokes about enshitification streets, is there a decomp for Genie/AoE2 out there? There's openage, but I swear there was a decomp out there. I might have to check my drives because I think I downloaded it. But my drives are so disorganised with hoarded crap because I'm panic downloading as much shit as I can off the internet before it goes full "you must get permission from the AI to do this" mode. Don't say that won't happen, corporations have been pushing this for decades and now they think they've finally got it (they don't, it's going to be a disaster). From memory, even Altman complained about how people used his tech... I don't even.>guy that made the AI complains to users that want to turn it into shodan that it just cannot do that and they're gonna kill people at this rateclown world.
>I can't believe that they are THAT incompetentI wonder what he thinks now in this hellhole of a world we live in now.
>dig into it further>there's post by actual old devs trying to figure it outOh dear god.How the fuck was DE even made?Did they just port things to a different engine or something? Why does this happen so often?
Why did they change this? Just so they could stop hackers or something? It's absurd to think that their strategy for security here is "limit the modification ability of the game" when that was it's attraction and literally part of what sold HD for me. I guess I now have to hack it in very illegal ways now to get around this, just to click a unit I want when a cutscene is enforcing triggers that prevent me doing so.Although there might be some mods that do it on github, but I have a feeling it could get me banned from my account (at which point, the game is a scam and my money has been stolen, all because you couldn't be bothered building more robust code in other ways to work around issues with things like pvp cheating). Man remember when pvp hacking meant malcolmreynolds trolling and not "trying to win money in a competition"? I think professional sports and esports just ruins every game they are based on over time. It's just pure greed (sometimes desperation) that drives that shit. Money is just a toxin to anything people make nowadays.
Recently got aoe on steam, played frequently when I was a kid. Tried out some skirmishes against AI but all the maps just seem gimmicky. Am I missing something or is there no random map gen with normal features?
what do you mean "normal features"
>>2444997you want arabia
>>2444997Continental
standard dark age start but players get 10 town centres and 199 villagers y/n?
What is this phenomenon of shitters maining the Chinese? Like you will see these Chinese players that absolutely fail at the start ending up like 3-4 vills behind but insist that they have they have mastered the Chinese start. You see players like this in low elo or posting on reddit all the time.
>>2445225I mean why not at this point
>>2445225villager nothingy/n
>>2445296Do you know where I can go to find out about coding scenarios or whatever you need to do stuff like this?>>2445300that would just be a huge vil fight if there are no resources on the map, which could be fun but I was thinking more about seeing a game develop from max pop instead of min pop
>>2445326No idea, at most I've fucked around with the editor to see which units beat which
Pop limit should be 75.It's way more challenging to play than just spamming 100+ villagers.
>>2445225I feel like the Spanish would be OP here.
>>2445618You suck with 100+ villagers and you'll suck with 75 pop. Shut the fuck up.
>>2445605For me it was setting up elaborate duels between hero units and making cool looking cities
>>2445619The huns would be able to start deleting vils and making military as soon as they get the wood for a barracks, which would probably make them top tier as wellFlemish militia would be a sight to behold as well
>>2445789I guess the answer to Flemish militia would be to just villdrush the opponent, but I don't know what a proper answer to Huns would be. They wouldn't even have to delete vils, just send meatwaves against you.
>>2445618Isn't 75 the original popcap of AOE2?
>>2446302Yes, it's what the campaigns all have/had in AoK.
Bayinnaung campaign is awesome! Especially the last scenario, claning the entire map, so the kang can do his spiritual tour before dying kek
>>2445618yes, 75 is really challenging. I have been playing the original campaigns on return of rome, and it forces me to send villagers forward, build production buildings and towers.Even the Aztec campaign was really hard to play, just the pop limit being 100 or 125 against spanish.
>>244561875 is interesting but 25 turns the game into a city builder. Not necessarily a bad tradeoff
>>2445326villager nothing but they're boars with 25hp and 100 meat each
>>2429940So, play empire wars? What's the problem
why isn't "Supremacy" called "Guerilla"
>SupremacyDon't use that word. It's one of my triggers ever since the Hera vs ACCM 7 hour long game in that Chinese tourney
I love hand cannonersAnd I love shooting civilians
>>2448825>And I love shooting civiliansWowowowoeow
>>2448825>Jeetmaster is evolvingNice. Vaginagar era of aoe2g will be brilliant
>>2448772because Guerillas are known for killing people, not tearing down cities
>>2448909Good to see you're still dedicated to your job, shitposter-kun
>>2448825im glad you love handcannoneers too :)
you won't believe me, but I literally just saw a villager moonwalk
>>2449677I misread that as moorwalk
So I caved and gave Bill Gates my money. While I dislike the chronicles campaigns being so linear and having these random units that should just be trainable for civs, I have to admit the 6 civs in chronicles are pretty dope and I like what's going on there. That's kinda what AoE1 DE needed to be because AoE1 really needed changes. That said, AoE1 had cool Helepolis strats and scorpions are shit in both AoE2 and chronicles (with their equiv). Also, they need some work with making these civs usable with other AoE2 civs. They're far too dominant because of unit type mismatches. There's nothing to counter some units.
>>2449677If it wasn't for the birb going forwards still I wouldn't believe you.Yeah the games getting some bad graphical bugs now.I wonder if patchers have access to source.
>>2448825I like gunpowder in AoE2, but playing AoE1 and Chronicles reminded me why I still returned to AoE1 as a kid and why my boxes of AoE3 have been dormant for a decades now.
>Can't mod anything without signing your soul to several different things every time you mod, that way you can get banned when you add reasonable things>such as a mod to give you a TOGGLE to flatten all objects like trees and buildings or to TOGGLE an overlay that shows the quirks of the terrain (like if it's considered water or whatever).Sierra had this down in 1999, why can't these devs do this in 2026?These shouldn't need to be modded in. They should be base game along with an expandable minimap you can click and drag. I'm starting to get scared the devs for DE don't actually have access to the source material. Apparently Chronicles was made by a modding community, so that kinda confirms that suspicion.
>>2449907>Apparently Chronicles was made by a modding communityYou know the devs for AoE2 DE are just the HD modders right?
>>2449918Yep. I still don't know if they have access to the source code though. Reddit seems to think all sorts of shit, though even posts by devs were inconclusive and shy on it. I know MS is a bitch for this shit.
