A small group of Zerg would be easy to deal with by a modern military, but the fact that there are basically infinite of them and they're coming from space would mean that we'd simply get overwhelmed.

How many Zerg are assaulting? In what way?

Just a zerg base appears with a Hatchery, 8 drones, 8 mineral nodes and 2 geyser nodes?

Or an entire space-borne swarm of trillions of space traveling Zerg biomorhps suddenly pops out of a moon sized wormhole and begins to descend upon Earth releasing thousands of zerg fliers each? (mind you lore isn't even exactly clear on how Zerg do Interstellar space travel or how they even get off from a planet other than LOL SPACE ALIENS!)

If the former then we are fine, unless maybe is Serral is in control of the hive but even like that I wouldn't bet on him.

In the latter case, we are absolutely fucked like "GAME OVER MAN! GAME OVER!" super-duper fucked. Just launching every nuke imaginable and nuking the entire planet would likely be a better option than resisting, at least that will save most humanity from infestation by granting a merciful death.

But most current politicians and billionaires would likely just immediately join the Zerg willingly for thge smallest of chance that they be spared and then will even try to convince humanity that resistance is futile and being part of Zerg hivemind is our true destiny etc. and the tentacles are fine and we should totally trust them.

You are missing 2 things.

1) The zerg would be commanded by a hivemind (or a group of hivemind agents) that are capable of understanding the enemy and the enemy's capabilities, while also devising elaborate long term plans to combat them. And then telepathically controlling large groups of their creatures and commander them on an almost instant communication and feedback, no need for reporting confirmation or chance of false information and reacting to changing battlefield conditions is also almost immediate.

This would be everything but a rampaging herd of dumb animals.

2) Our entire real life military doctrine has been built to fight other humans, including other armies and countries. From the very foundation human enemies have been the basis of everything. Zerg would be a completely alien opponent that is not even from this planet so we have absolutely no data about them. They would not even be something like Earth-born animals we would not even have that little information on them and their capabilities and biology. We could only guesstimate that they are something similar since they use claws and walk on legs like bugs but we would have zero information about the extent of which bioform can do what. Let alone when being commanded with real intelligence.

Now depending if these Zerg already fought the Terran Dominion or not they could already be familiar with humans. But even if they never encountered humans yet they have seen many other planets and conquered numerous species that survived in hostile environments, some may have been intelligent civilizations like the Protoss, so the zerg will have afar greater experience and understanding in dealing with us then us dealing with them.

Besides we couldn't even win the notorious Emu wars...

I mean those siege tanks don't seem to be putting out any more firepower than a modern artillery piece. A world war 1 style army with literally 10s of thousands of artillery could put out orders of magnitude more ordnance than we see there. Not to mention just launch nukes. We got a lot of them
