>>2441101>inaccurate flat thureos shields for Romescuta where not like that.
>>2441142idk, thats how their historians chose to interpret it for the polybian romans>VI.23 > [1] The next in seniority called hastati [*ἁστάτοις / hastatois*] are ordered to wear a complete panoply [*πανοπλίαν / panoplian*]. [2] The Roman panoply consists firstly of an oblong shield [*θυρεός / thureos*], the convex surface which measures two and a half feet in width and four feet in length, the thickness at the rim being a palm's breadth, [3] It is made of two planks glued together, the outer surface being then covered first with canvas and then with calf-skin. [4] Its upper and lower rims are strengthened by an iron edging which protects it from descending blows and from injury when rested on the ground. [5] It has an iron boss fixed to it which turns aside the more formidable blows of stones, pikes, and heavy missiles in general. >[15] but those who are rated above 10.000 drachmas wear instead of the breastplate [καρδιοφύλακος / kardiophylakos] a coat of chain-mail [ἁλυσιδωτοὺς περιτίθενται θώρακας / alysidotous peritithentai thorakas]. [16] The principes [πρίγκιπας / prinkipas] and triarii [τριαρίους / triarious] are armed in the same manner except that instead of the pila [ὑσσῶν / hysson] the triarii [τριάριοι / triarioi] carry spears [δόρατα / dorata].
>>2441211>>2441142although the shields they have for the romans does seem to be more fat than the slim ones seen on the heavy reformed greek infantry.
>>2440578As a big bronzaboo I'd say they pass a layman's sniff test but there is stuff which is not authentic to the period, either because it's very clearly drawing from a later period (Assyrian/Babylonian stuff) or there's just not the material on hand (Thracians, Trojans). I may be wrong but I don't remember anything that felt glaringly out of place like Troy2004 dudes or anything. When I looked at the units my issue was more too much bronze and not enough rawhide for scales or shields and such. It's the equivalent of having Romans running around with iron-faced iron-rimmed iron-backed shields. For my project I'm trying to curtail the natural bias to 'fun unit design' over 'tedious unit placement' by holding myself to implementing the actual code for Assyria, Babylonia and Elam in a lump sum once I have the VMDs done for their units. Since I have to re-do the unit stats entirely it feels more efficient to do it all in a lump group rather than piecemeal. I did do a draft run of it and, assuming I have it right (looking at the amazon mod for a frame of reference to see what he had to add for a brand new unit table wise) it's not AS bad as I was worried, but it's still spreadsheet hell. Unit cards wre also fun to make, as I felt like since you look at them more often than the actual VMD on the battlefield it makes more sense to make them look fancier. I'm missing some like Assyria's sappers and I have to double check if Assyria's earlier chariots had a shieldman, but Row 1-2 are Assyria 3 up to the armored slinger is Babylonia, then the last 5 are Elam.
