Hi guys, new to Hearts of Iron III. I have some experience in CKII, CKIII, and Imperator, but this is the first time I've played HoI. I'm enjoying my campaign so far, but I'm at something of a standstill and not sure how to proceed. I've managed to stall the German offensive here, and there hasn't been a major battle in eight months or so. They can't attack into my positions along the river but I also can't really attack into them. It would make my life a lot easier if Germany had declared war on Belgium, but Belgium are still neutral for now. Italy and Japan are also uninvolved in the war, but Italy is slowly adding soldiers to my southern border. What do you advise I should be doing here?

trying out ck3. so, coming from ck2, because this game doesnt have crimean goths and because i want to see what this game has to offer over its predecessor i decided to go all the way and start as a custom landless adventurer - an asatru goth, also a little bit of a self-insert with the traits, humble traits and stats but not too humble.the plan for this campaign is to travel to italy asap and conquer some land, then swear fealty to the eastern roman empire. and the long-term plan is to conquer all of italy as vassal of the eastern roman empire to let the ai emperor restore rome. and eventually revolt against rome and break free and create a gothic western roman empire, maybe hellenised gothics.no clue how feasible this is with ck3 mechanics, ill just find out

I don't get some parts of this game.Why does urbanization reduce the size of non-food/organic materials NGOs? I get why it would reduce food and organic NGOs. Both urban sprawl being built over arable land, environmental destruction and a general legal and economic move away from farming and gathering, but why would building a town/city/megalopolis on an iron producing proving reduce your ability to mine iron, for instance? It seems like the meta is to build a bunch of towns and cities on the food producing provinces and to leave non-food producing provinces rural, which seems to me like the opposite of how it should work. At the very least, mine RGOs shouldn't be reduced by urbanization.Also, it seems to heavily favor capital economies over traditional feudal economies. That's appropriate in Victoria, because that's the time period when industrial capitalism completely overtook feudalism and agrarian economies as an economic system, but in the Early Modern period, which is when EU takes place, this really shouldn't be so stark. In fact, in the very beginning when the game is still in the Middle Ages, the feudal economy should be straight up better than the capital economy, with capital economies only really starting to take off with the discovery of the New World and the age of colonialism. I really don't see why a land-locked country with no New World colonies like Hungary, Bohemia or Austria should be city-maxxing and trade-maxxing over developing their rural RGOs.

Continuing the war, here is the current situation on the front : The wargoal has been sieged however the Ottomans sent an overwhelming force down into upper Egypt and won a few large battles, prompting me to recruit an extra 20k men. Our allies and a small force of Nubians have rolled over Arabia and are currently putting pressure on the Turks in Mesopotamia, which should relieve the main front somewhat. On a more positive note the Ottomans are already at 0 manpower coming off their invasions of Ajam and Qara Qoyonlu, our losses are replaceable and we should be able to wear them down through attrition and continuous fighting
I've also spent a considerable amount of mil mana recruiting generals and finally got at least one decent candidate. I'm currently using Central African warriors and should really have switched to West African before the war to maximize defensive bonuses but at least this offers us some flexibility in choosing our battles

i don't like enacting the mana privileges they make keeping estates loyal difficult because they increase their influence but lower their loyalty. much better to enact the privileges that give you money, prestige and combat bonuses and as you approach the governing cap you slot in the +100 govcap privileges +1 mana is really not that important since you'll have more mana than you can spend with inno/espy/offensive
Mana privileges are good early game but fall off later, loyalty should never be an issue if you're issuing monopolies, using supremacy of the crown for free diets + loyalty or the 2 privilegews for clergy/nobility that give more loyalty than influence (fort defense bonus and dev cost iirc). Most privileges are situationally useful the actually useless privliges are things like the gov cost reduction for centers of trade or the one that increases all power costs for a -0.1 yearly inflation
loyalty is only ever a broblem in the early game bt mana is eternal
loyalty should never be a problem bro unless your country has specific disaster for estate loyalty like mali. it's also far better to have estates with 100 influence (extreme example) and 60 equilibrium than 30 influence but 40 equilibrium for the bonuses you get alone never mind the fact that plenty of gov reforms/ideas/etc that give loyalty
