How is Solium Infernum? You never hear anyone talk about it when 4X games are discussed.
Far too cerebral for the map painters of this board.
>>2448382Pretty dead as far as I know, with AI that is not great. Has appeal of something like dominions where you can play async with some people. Pretty RNG heavy and frustrating to play because you can get really fucked up by luck, or just everyone deciding to dogpile you. Strategies aren't created equal, takes a while to figure out what works really well and what doesn't. Snowbally near the end, with little hope of clawing back from getting beaten down. Despite all the negativity in the last sentences, it's still a pretty unique game that's worth a try.
>>2448382i remember trying to get into early access and dev poll was asking me about non-binary shit so noped the fuck out lol
>>2448382cards
>>2448382It’s a card game, which is automatically cancer. The original is also better.
>>2448382It's an interesting game. I started with the original (released 2009) this year, and play both the original and 2024 remake. They differ in certain gameplay aspects, with certain things left out (like avatar customization) or made worse (praetor duels) in the remake but there is a few additions I like too.>>2448434>Pretty RNG heavyThe combat itself is very deterministic, there is no randomness to it. The selection of items for sale is randomized but open and equally accessible to all players. You could make an argument that ritual success rate is heavily skewed towards resistance but overall I don't get your complain about randomness. >just everyone deciding to dogpile youBalance of power, duh. In other news, you can communicate with people via diplomacy. If you prefer not to engage with anyone else verbally, that's on you.>Snowbally near the end, with little hope of clawing back from getting beaten down.Kinda yes and no. There is a lot of factors from the resources available, tactical situation etc. I won one of the my games effectively in the last few turns when everyone else dropped out/got eliminated by the player who excommunicated himself and went on a massacring spree. Until that point I was the weakest, struggled a lot, and apparently I was paid no attention. Right then I bought the Gorgon (one of the titan units). Since he was second in turn order after me every single turn (being excommunicated, he can't assume regency and the right of the turn priority), he had no way to act before my 3-movement titan, and I went straight for his stronghold. He couldn't resupply his forces (again, he had no access to the bazaar due to excommunication), and apparently didn't expect much from me given how shit I was over the course of the game until that point.>>2448482>It’s a card gameKinda yes and no. It's not at all like MtG. The original developer's first game, Armageddon Empires, is actually much closer to traditional card games.
>>2448382I have no idea but it blended with Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars for me.
>>2448491Looks interesting. But the credit is due when it's due - Vic Davis did it first way back in 2009.
>>2448382I wish it was supported with a proper expansion. They just released one piece of DLC.
>>2448777They're finishing the free Pinnacle to the Pit update. It's currently in open beta test.
AARs for original Solium Infernum:https://waltoriouswritesaboutgames.com/2017/07/09/the-complete-hell-or-high-water/
>>2448382It's literally retard repellent, hence why no signal through gamer communities.
Anyone here except me joined the devs' discord?
>>2448791and it's out of the beta
>>2448382I like Armageddon Empires more. Not that I played SI much beyond like launching for several mins and having a look around and the idea is fun but the fact I actually played AE must mean I liked it way more. And the way AE rolls the dice is very GOOD.
>>2458255>I like Armageddon Empires more. It's neater than SI in some aspects. Too bad it doesn't have mp.
>>2458255bruh
>>2458255The main issue about both classic SI and AE is that they run on an absolutely dogshit engine that makes even a simple card game feel sluggish. They're interesting games but they're just not fun to play because of this.
>>2461788If you mean that dice rolls take forever in AE then the steam forums say it's a problem of players needing to manually download some Windows libraries or whatever and then the dice will roll fine and fast.>>2461692Amazing, I know.>>2460704>Too bad it doesn't have mpTrue.
>>2448382the artwork in the original is betteri wish there were more games out there that carry the themesa proper sequel to this which i would love to see is one where, after battling it out with the other demon lords, the winner has all the other demons fall into ranks where they assist in infiltrating the physical/spiritual realm of mankind and slowly infecting the world with stuff like witchcraft and blood sacrifices, war and 1-world-government in attempts to set up the antichrist through technologymeanwhile there's the side of heaven which has their angels fighting to disentangle this by fighting the demonssomething like crusader kings 3 comes to mind when i imagine this
>>2463960>the artwork in the original is betterFellow man of taste.Btw the original SI community is living, and has a a discord channel at almost 600 people. I'm hosting two mp games at the moment. If you're curious, I may email you the discord link to the community (I can't post it there lest it be harvested by spam bots). My mail is o r i e n t a l i s t a @ proton dot me(without spaces).
>>2463960>the artwork in the original is betterlol no. It has its charm but technically current SI art is way better in almost everything. the old praetor art is shit, for instance>>2448382I personally like it but i don't have the patience.
>>2464214>the old praetor art is shit, for instanceLol. Lmao. Vaguely humanoid figures with lots of spikes coming out aren't a good design. There is fewer praetors in nu-SI, yet somehow they are less distinguishable and memorable. A lot of them just blend together because of how unimaginative they are.Funny how you think that Barlowe's art you posted somehow defends your case, since the OSI designs' grotesque and somewhat mocking nature is much more in line wit his style, like these Dark Stalkers, or, well, OSI praetors. >>2464044
>>2464451>Funny how you think that Barlowe's art you posted somehow defends your casedidn't post it to "defend my case", I just think it's cool
>>2464823>I just think it's coolVerily so.
>>2464975a collab with Barlowe by SI developers would be rad>new legions, events, praetors and places of power with his Hell art>new Archfiend: SargatanasI know it isn't happening ever but it would be incredible. I still don't understand why the game doesn't allow modding, or at least Steam doesn't support it
i tried it and didn't like it. 55 turns feels both gruelling and constraining. you are racing for economical snowballing in fairly scripted and obvious ways. half the mechanics seem meant as a way to exacerbate a lead and the other half randomly say "fuck you" with nothing you can do about it. bazaar means the first player with the right money for a combo or good legions always wins at combat and the rest get trash. seems very unbalanced in general. singleplayer is trivial afterthought and multiplayer seems like it would be very unfun, except for two-three rounds with inexperienced friends to laugh at the bullshit, but it's too expensive and slow to learn for that. also the game drops one fps every five minutes even if nothing's happening until it's below ten.
game is absolutely goated, but the developer collapsed from like 80 people into two people when their other projects failed (armello money ran out, starship cruise anime game got cancelled). i wish this game had a stronger life because I think it is top tier on every count (fuck the dude up top saying the AI is bad - it's some of the best in any 4X game), but it's a LOT to get into and lacks a dedicated fanbase to adequately hype your friends into playing. not because the game is bad, but because everyone is a fucking smoothbrain these days.
>BarloweI feel like the dude's just repeating himself now.
>>2467536Explain yourself.
>>2467533i don't know what you mean by good. you're going to curbstomp it and win by miles in your very first game, as you're learning, and there's no more to it after that. maybe it's sophisticated and well made but it sucks at actually playing and its existence contributes basically nothing to the game.
Where can I find Six Gun Saga and The Occult Chronicles? It's like they've never existed
>>2467533>armelloman, that game looked fun but after 5-6 matches it falls off hard
>>2464044how do you make the games? I mean how do you manage to create the games and run them and suchI tried the original game some years ago when the first new about the remake appeared on the internet and I liked it enough. I might play again if I can play asynchronously with other real folks
>>2474082https://soliuminfernum.miraheze.org/wiki/Multiplayer_GuideLooks intimidating to set up but it's really easy. Takes under a minute to process a turn once it's all set up.Btw I linked Discord in the mail. Maybe I should post an image with a temporary invite. >>2471190Unfortunately, I can only offer demos from the official site.https://soliuminfernum.miraheze.org/wiki/Cryptic_Comet
>>2474118played a couple of games against 4 AI and won two, I guess i still remember how to play. It's fun but would be much better with actual peoplecan you gain aditional actions by increasing your chars attributes? I know you can in currten SI, but I only maganed to do it in og game by capturing the palace of the lake of fire and through relics
>>2474654> It's fun but would be much better with actual peopleI can OG or nu-game.>can you gain aditional actions by increasing your chars attributes?Same way by increasing your powers. Except it the remake it's all powers give one extra order at level 4, while in OSI you only get it at level 4 Destruction, Deceit, and Prophecy, and level 5 of Wrath. You can see what powers do in the power tab, in the manual or wiki.
>>2475889it would be OG for me. As much as I like the remake I'm not willing to spend money on it right now, got some other stuff to care about>You can see what powers do in the power tab, in the manual or wikitrue, I realized that some days ago. Kinda op that charisma also gives extra orders on nu SIalso wanted to ask, is it possible to mod the original? Just curious
>>2477893>Kinda op that charisma also gives extra orders on nu SIIn nu-SI the tribute quality is affected by whatever is your highest power. You don't necessarily have to level up Charisma, although due to its pricing, it's still the easiest choice.>also wanted to ask, is it possible to mod the original? Just curiousYeah, absolutely. I did a little mod - a test of sorts - and uploaded to GitHub. I've described the process in more detail in Discord that I linked in the mail.https://github.com/elyyhwh/solium-infernum-2009-mod/tree/TESTI'm preoccupied now with fixing a few bugs from OG before going any further into this.
