What I learned from EU5 is that you can give players literally everything they ever fucking wanted and they will still complain. For a decade I listened to uncs on /gsg/ seethe about how EU4 was too much of a casual mana map painter and that paradox needed to make the game harder and more like Vicky to bring back the Trve fans. Then they did that and its still nothing but endless seething.

The worst part about the DLC train isn’t just the money, it’s that the DLC themselves bloat up and ruin the game on a long enough timeframe. The only good game they’ve made in the last ten years is Imperator, and they abandoned it (perhaps a blessing in disguise)

they listened the spergs on /gsg/ and the paradox forums that wanted meiou and taxes because they feel superior for playing an incredibly convoluted mod that they themselves only barely understand. Everyone that enjoyed playing EU games, especially mpfags just wanted the eu4 trade system that can flow in both directions, maybe an extra building or two, and some less mana abstraction without turning the game into an autistic economic calculation problem that needs to be studied at the end of every month tick.

sim chuds are just like that. They don't know what they really want, because their fantasy, what they wish for, is so diffuse, shapeless and clouded. What the most people want is a good game first. So for all the EU 1-4 chads, EU5 is a severe, but expected, disappointement.

The game has one big issue and some smaller issues. The big issue is, that expanding isn't fun and the gameplay loop sucks cock. It makes no sense that a huge empire is capped by how many chuds they have in their cabinet and can't core stuff any quicker than small countries. Coring should be done with a slider and costs (cash + manpower) should be directly connected to how much stuff you are integrating at once. Big, rich empires like the Turks should be able to core Egypt in like 10-20 years.
Also, war score cost is too high. The only real limiter on how much you can take should be some overextension penalty and coring costs. If you can actually occupy France fully in one war, as well as being able to cope with massive overextension, coring and antagonism, you should be able to annex France in one war. Huge conquest is satisfying and a fun end game goal. Instead, you fight a world war for half of Lombardy, which is fucking stupid and not fun at all.
Smaller issues include a lack of flavor and individuality for countries, autistic, pseudo deep fake economy on the level of artisans making tanks out of fruit, where you have to be an islamic merchant republic to make any money with trade at all and buildings are useless except if you stack production efficiency to the point where you can produce a fuckload of goods nobody even consumes for a profit.
Those wouldn't really be an issue if conquest was fun and if you could LARP properly, but you can't really therefore eu5 is currently shit if you don't have autism. My friends who play eu4 say eu5 lacks the spark that eu4 has, and I think that spark is a fun, arcadey gameplay loop like eu4 has
>>
>>2454833
>If you can actually occupy France fully in one war, as well as being able to cope with massive overextension, coring and antagonism, you should be able to annex France in one war.
Not even ww2 germany managed that but you're expecting 14th centyry monarchies to do it
>>
>>2453905
The game is nothing like Victoria 2. The way markets, buildings, estate and government funding interact with each other is disjointed and almost arbitrary. It feels like Johan just copy pasted the code from Eu4 into Imperator Rome and scaled the pops up.
>>
>>2455030
No I don't, but I'm saying war score cost shouldn't be the limiter. I'm saying you should collapse from revolts, colaitions and going bankrupt from coring costs.
>>If you can actually occupy France fully in one war, as well as being able to cope with massive overextension, coring and antagonism
>>
>>2453905
Why do so many talk about eu5 like johan did it on his spare time out of the goodness of his heart, for so much he loved paradox kind, instead of being a lead developer making a product competing both with products of other companies and older products of his own.
>>
>>2453905
I think the game would be a lot better if the start date was still 1444. Not enough happens in the 100 or so years prior to that and all the major events that did happen which setup all the fun from the 1444 start never follows that plan, so all the setup that makes the 1444-1821 timeline enjoyable never happens. So the game just goes nowhere forever. All it seems to do is make France or England a massive blob.
>>
>>2455732
True. 1337 start date shifts colonization firmly into mid-late game and adds the need for ck3 style levies (I fucking HATE levies). Also removes things that are necissary for the early modern paradigm to come about, like the Timurid Empire, Burgundy and its eventual inheritance, the rise of the Ottomans and the Polish Lithuanian commonwealth
>>
>>2455793
I think the people at tinto decided that the change from using levies to standing armies was a fundamental part of europe and never had second thoughts about how to actually implement it.
>>
>>2455732
>Not enough happens in the 100 or so years prior to that and all the major events
No it does. 100 years war, plague that wipes out a large part of Europe, rise of Ming, rise of Ottomans, disintegration of Golden horde. I'd make a case more happens in the century before 1444 than does in the one after it. EU5 is just terrible at simulating those things.
>>
>>2455819
100 years war was not relevant and the black death is a meme because it affects everyone around you aswell so it doesnt even matter
ottomans were still "rising" in 1444 and golden horde not done either
>>
>>2455819
>EU5 is just terrible at simulating those things.
Thats my point, the years between 1337 and 1444 had some major moments but it never plays out that way so the 1444 start is all scrambled and messed up, so the things that people like generally dont come close to happening. I haven't played for 2000 hours or anything, but in the ~200 i got i never once saw the Ottomans take out the Mamluks, or Russia ever really become anything like the AI reliably could in 4, I think i once saw the PLC form at a strong state. I never paid attention to it myself but have anons ever seen Ming form on time?

The tldr is the 107 years between the two start dates had too many things that needed to happen in a specific order to create the fun sandbox during 4's timeline.
>>

>I didn't want the game to run like shit.

>>
>>2454793
Pausing the game is good. Gives you time to focus on the immersion.
>>
>>2456300
Johan already built that into the game by making it crash frequently.
>>
Does anyone here also hate the cabinet mechanics? It's literally mana and doesn't make sense at all. Why shouldn't I be able to have a 20 people cabinet as some HRE chud in 1337? Why is there a magical barrier that prevents me from hiring more dudes to work for me? And why exactly does my entire administration and everything it does depend on these motherfuckers? Why do I need to tell Dr. Wilhelm Bratwurst von Cuntenstein to integrate Frankfurt for me? Wouldn't that be done by a nameless mass of bureaucrats, bailiffs and clergymen that would only really be capped by how much money you can spare and how well your governing institutions are equipped?
TL:DR cabinet = mana and it's not even fun or makes sense
>>
>>2457019
Easier to make an effective attention feedback loop if you make the consequences of decisions instant like with wizards..
>>
ill never understand why autists want this level of depth to a point where you need a shitty ai to automate large portions of the game. Ruins the whole part of the experience where you find efficient builds and learn what to make. You're just sitting there watching an AI crunch numbers that have no meaning whats the point
>>
>>2457492
somehow there are so many players who want EU to be something it never was. I blame all the new players coming in during EU4's lifespan, thinking grand strategy is some uber genre encompassing all and every detail of guiding a nation, while most of the games are whacky map painters.
When you go too far into simulation territory, it becomes less of a game. And simulating is better done by computers, so pdx made a game that is in parts better played by itself than by its players.
>>
>>2457019
I think they would be more fun if coring wasn't tied to it. They give you all these options to do with them but then make you lock the members down for years just to core a county.
>>
>>2457492
The stellar success of KCD1 and a few similar games psyoped a lot of people into thinking they wanted a realistic history game and not, you know, novel mechanics and a simple linear story for once.
>>
>>2453905
Honestly? We didn't know how good we had it
>>
The problem isn't that EU5 is a bad game or anything. It's just a bad EU game. They should have just called it Meiou & Taxes 2 and released it as a spin-off, cause that's what it is. I like it, but for different reasons than EU4.
>>
>>2459604

>>2453905
EU5 has a complicated simulationist economy like Vicky but it fails to replicate what makes Vicky 2 (with HPM of course) so comfy
>short time period packed with interesting historical events
>simulation which can capture the sense of rapid progess and interaction between technology, economy and politics and military development
>aesthetic and easily usable (once you are used to it) UI
>different game mechanics and priorities for Europe vs Americas vs Uncivs
>enough railroading to make historically plausible outcomes
>great power system that leads to interesting wars and challenges for the player
EU5 fails at every single point
>>
>>2464203
EUV is trying really hard to be Victoria most of the time. The problem is that it starts in the FUCKING MEDIEVAL AGES.
>>
Man EU5 feels so god damn sterile and i really despise the constant bipolar ass balancing.
A byzantine bureaucracy load of unreleated modifiers per dice roll and all they can think of is "x now stackwipes, x is now worthless."
Wars, piracy, diplomacy, trade, economy, statecraft - it all feels so arbitrary/unimpactful.
Was the inspiration for this to patch out as much gameplay as possible from EU4 and Imperator and replace it all with sliders and backend calculations ? A million mechanics and nothing feels impactful.
>>
>>2453905
Vic2 is fun
EU5 isn't
>>
>>2463338
EU3 is a farcry from a simulation. Instead of mana you had regenerating agentd, which mechanically is mana with a different name. Also sliderkino. EU3 was more sandboxy than any other EU, but that doesn't make it a sim.

EU4 + reworked dev system + population mechanic tied to manpower + more sensible military access and attrition meaning you can't go 50 provinces deep without holding the ones behind you.

That was literally all that was needed, instead we got cookie clicker where it's just perma number goes up and there's no difference between the countries because you don't have simple easy to understand national ideas.

It reminds me a lot of when people didn't like the MoP-SL talent trees in wow and so they wanted to go back to proper talent trees, only to end up doing the exact same thing; copy from wowhead or favourite streamer and just use a cookie cutter build. That's mana in the EU games, people say they don't want it and they want it different only for them to be faced with a system they are going to optimize anyway and it's essentially the same thing just devolved a little bit.
>>
>>2465252
It's impressive how they just can't seem to make a good game out ouf their ambition™ to produce a simulation. It's not the first time this approach failed miserably. They need to get real and accept that Vic 2 was an outlier, despite its further need for polish.
>>
>>2453905
As one of those "uncs" seething on /gsg/ I am actually quite happy with EU5. There's just a laundry list of minor problems that make the game really annoying to play at times, but honestly they're moving in the right direction. What it does desperately need for an EU game is:
>proper colonization/exploration mechanics that feel satisfying and rewarding
Caribbean sugar islands were obscene profitable for countries that managed to hold onto them. Spain got ridiculously wealthy from American gold and silver (before they bricked their own economy with inflation from it). The Dutch and Portuguese made huge profits from accessing the trade in India and China. But none of these are really effective ways to play the game. Sure you can turn some profit but the manufacturing side of things scales so fast that it ends up being a rounding error.
>1444/1453/1492 start date
It's too hard to railroad AI countries into their historical expansion paths without this so you rarely see any of the classic early modern powers that don't exist in 1337. Also, the idea of playing as a colonial-focused power like England or is very unappetizing because you have to spend the first 100 years jerking off, or go for crazy blobbing expansion routes in Europe.
>>
>>2465309
>England or
England or Portugal*
>>
>>2453905
It took EU5 to make us realise how good we had it with EU4. Most players including myself have returned to EU4 and haven't looked back.

>>
>>2465424
Could try that. I was thinking about that rough region anyway, considering something that could make the Khmer empire. But Malacca could be fun, too.
>>
>>2465433
It's a pretty fun region for naval shenanigans. Once you finally unite most of the islands under your banner you become pretty defendable against European powers. With a big enough navy you can just sink or drive them off.
>>
>>2465309
>they're moving in the right direction
kinda not enough, if you pay 60 bux + dlc tax, if you ask me.
Paraslop isn't a small indie dev anymore. We can demand certain standards from them and they should have some self-respect as creators and an ambition to deliver a polished, fully working product
>>
>>2465423
Define "fun" in eu5 for you, swimming through events and making use of whatever bonuses a tag may have? Otherwise you know they are all the same.
>>
>>2465290
Vicky's simulation is fun because the game loop (number go up) and historical reality (industrial revolution) are aligned. It works so well and influences so many of the other mechanics that the janky aspects are easily overlooked
EU5's time period doesn't have an easy teleological narrative, at least not one that applies to every nation at every period from 1337 to the 19th century. You could definitely create something like Vicky's economy and pops by focusing on trade and exploration as the driver for other developments (this is what EU should be, thematically) but the devs didn't have a focused vision like that
>>
If i dont have any interest in playing Byz there's no reason to get the phoenix DLC right. I dont know if that DLC adds anything for other countries i care about.

What I'd like to do:
>Start: Start as European country
>ASAP: Adopt some subsaharan african culture as my primary culture and convert to some african paganism
>End goal: turn as much of europe into africa culturally and convert it to african paganism
I think the best starting country is going to be Portugal, possible Holland - if you think there's another option, tell me.
What I don't know 'how' to achieve is: How do I get the conditions so I can adopt subsaharan african culture as primary (Either majority of population being that OR the subsaharan culture holding most wealth). Any ideas on that? Can you move the subsaharan african pops from overseas into mainland? Or maybe I should wipe out my european population through diseases and war?
The problem is that there are lot of small african cultures.
First I want to achieve the culture+faith change, then I can start thinking about the end goal.
See pic related I have chunk of Africa, 25% of my population is non-european, however any singular african country is at most 5% of my population.

1) They made the game too autistic. The reason Victoria 2's economy is more fun is because it's deep enough to where your actions in the game can affect the amount of goods on the world market, which is engaging and fun. But it's not so deep that it's got different types of fucking paper for no reason.
2) Nothing ever happens, which is the actual reason Victoria 3 also flopped. Too much focus was put into making the game as autistic as possible and not enough focus was put into making things happen. Contrast this with the mechanically shallow game HOI4 in which stuff happens all the time, or even Victoria 2 in which stuff happens even when campaigns aren't railroaded by mods.

Unironically you couldn’t be more wrong.
If they catered to YouTuber trash, then it would be ADHD, mission tree riddled bullshit with the game going at a gorillion years per minute since all the EU4 jewtubers just spam click the events and play at 5x speed to maximize free casus belli from their beloved mission trees.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA
>>
>>2449255
Haven't played it yet it but it seems like such an unbalanced mess, and its different mechanics don't blend well together. It's basically a $60 beta

I wouldn't even bother with it because they're still trying to figure out how to make it decent, and that could take years (if ever)

Wow, who could expected their game will be shit.

The acrual old guard is still playing EU3/Vicky 2/HoI3 (or DH, depending on the flavour). PDX simply fucked up by first nutruring the CK2/EU4 playerbase and then trying to be "hardcore" for them in their post-Imperator slop.
>>
>>2455059
I wouldn't be surprised if that's how it actually went
>>
>>2471496
Gold is not mana
Properly handled stability isn't mana (see - pre-EU4)
Legitimacy was a mistake AND mana
Prestige was originally just your final game score and should remained there

Mana is, well, mana, when its generation is almost or entirely disjoined from your performance and/or gained by RNG factor outside of player control. Therefore, your gold as income can't be mana, unless you fuck up game design badly (see: I:R)

EU5 is not simulationist. It's an incremental game just like EU4 was. In Vicky 2 for example money is useful but there's a limit to what you can do with it. With EU5 money is all powerful, it is fuel for unlimited growth
Paradox could have made some kino games by expanding the international competitive aspect of industry/economy, but instead all they ever do is make domestic economy into cookie clicker, over and over again

I swear to fucking god i dont know half the rules for who can join a war. France declares on me, they have no allies so its just them. But then Tunis and Morocco joining in makes a little sense since i rivaled them (But they dont rival me back, so i dont know why they're able to join). Naples joined cause they were rivaled to France and intervened. However i dont know how the Otto's got in since they were not rivaled to me or Naples, nor were either of us rivaling him. And i dont know how the fuck Kiev got involved. They're not in anyway diplomatically involved in anybody in this war on my side or not. And what makes it worse is there was never a popup when they joined so it can at least tell me why, like when Naples joined or when the emperor declares on you and drags in half of the HRE, even the ones hes not allied with. But with all 4 of those countries they just joined with zero explanation why. Make it make sense.

The problem with 1492 is that there are no variables for the New World. Spain and Portugal are already set up, the Dauphin won, England is stable, it has no flux. '44 and '53 work because you can still majorly change things.

Let's be honest and admit that EU5's only getting this much hate because it has no flavor. Not gonna pretend it doesn't have issues but Paradox fans wouldn't bring them up if EU5 had mission trees or unique gov mechanics.
>>
>>2491149
Agree, I love the bugs and love that devs can't decide what the fuck they want to do with their game and I love that I paid full price for an unfinished game and I love that absolutely ass of a DLC. Uma delicia/10
>>
>>2491149
“Lack of flavor” is only a complaint for low IQ people who can’t roleplay or use their imagination without the game holding their hand. Similar to how people used to be able to make up their own challenges and gimmick runs in games without having a fixed “achievement” for it. Mission trees were an absolute mistake and EU4 was made worse for their addition.
The problem with EU5 imo is that the devs don’t have a cohesive vision of the game and are just flailing around and throwing shit at the wall. It was made by autistic modders that fundamentally forgot that the EU series is supposed to be A Game with certain levels of abstraction. It is not supposed to be “lol Victoria but in the 1300s” and such systems are fundamentally anachronistic and inappropriate.
>>
>>2491179
You can't use the "roleplay" cop-out with EU5.
Crusader Kings (2 and 3) are examples of games that can reasonably have lack of flavor, because their roleplay potential makes up for it. Sure, you can play "optimally" and marry your heir to someone with massive claims, blob all over the world, and do a WC, but that isn't the point of the game. It's far more fun to play a lecherous old pervert, or a devoted family patriarch, or a scheming vassal, or all three at once, the game is literally what you make of it.

EU5 on the other hand has one designated playstyle, you mass urbanize, you build granary towns, you spam granaries, you make vassals, you annex the vassals, you blob. You quit in 1500 because you became the biggest nigger on the block and you're just mowing down the enemy's peasant stacks with your heavy cav regulars.

EU5 DOES have the potential to be a roleplaying game, but in order to do that they'd need to:
>remove the entire liberty desire and diplomatic capacity system so you could paint the map with puppets with impunity
>flesh out characters so they actually feel alive
>sort out the levy/regular dichotomy, especially with regards to heavy cav, so there isn't a "build to instantly win every war" unit
>get rid of the retarded passive assimilation/conversion, so your realms are actually supposed to be diverse instead of instantly assimilating to a mono-culture
>>
>>2491149
i hate eu5 not because it has no flavor, but because of its anti-blob mechanics
>>
>>2491189
>flesh out characters so they actually feel alive

I like the anti-blob mechanics, but their enforcement is extremely arbitrary.
For example, if I'm playing as Britain I can build a naval governor in, say, Naples (because it's the same continent) and blob over literally the entirety of Italy. (ahistorical)
But I can't build one in Dhaka and blob all over Bengal (historical)
Naval governors essentially now only have use to allow ahistorical and retarded blobbing, while curtailing the ability to blob realistically. It'd be cool if Portugal could have a naval governor in Brazil, the Netherlands could have a naval governor in Indonesia, and Spain could have a naval governor in Mexico, instead their only use is for retarded ahistorical blobbing with no historical precedent on the same continent.
Whoever designed the mechanic has no regard for the time period, enjoyment of the game, or history in general.

EU5 is the story of a brilliant game ruined by terrible design choices.
>>
>>2491193
I think that's due to how few events they have in the game.
They use the same MTTH pulse system as all other paradox games, where a random event will fire every so often.
If you have 100 events, you only have a 1:100 chance of the hunting accident event firing. If you have 10 events you have a 1:10 chance of it firing.
Same problem with colonization events, getting the mutt's mutters matter twice a year, every year.
>>
>>2491199
for me it's trying to play as muscovy
granted, i'm still a newb and don't know the optimal way of growing into russia without either lagging behind or destroying my economy with blobbing to "keep up"
not even sure if vassal swarm is what i should be doing
>>
>>2491264
They nerfed vassals hard so the sweaty metagamers couldn't abuse them, fucking them up for real use cases such as yours. Currently for Russia you're best using a mix of vassals and direct blobbing and integrating, because while vassals are still shit Russia is just so huge that you can't feasibly integrate it all yourself.
Next version they're supposed to be undoing some of the nerf they did, and making vassals' base annex cost lower, so a Russia run then should be more fun. You'll also be able to put sky high export tariffs on fur, which should be pretty fun, provided they don't fuck up the economy.

why are there no wiki nerds for this game? I know it's not as popular as eu4 or ck3 or whatever but there's surely people who would do it.
But you look for anything specific on the wiki and it's just not there.
How the fuck do levies work? Why do I have mailed knights but no noble cavalry? There's nothing anywhere in game or online that tells me what decides this. I ASSUME it's a european or catholic vs other cultures thing but I have NO way of knowing.
My unique age 1 unit isn't even in the recruitment page and I have no idea why. I'm hoping it's a mod problem and I'll try to mess around with it to see why but who fucking knows.
You try to find any of this specific information and you're more likely to find fucking pre-launch leaks from early access people than anything recent.
>>
>>2491316
figured it out.
Despite the Duchy of Athens getting an estate that allows them to recruit order units (crusader sergeants and such) they can't actually do this because they can't construct Order Strongholds which are required to recruit these because they're not a Military Order. At least you can fix this by conquering Rhodes which does have one.
You also can't recruit Catalan Crossbowmen without having the primary culture of location being accepted or primary, meaning you have to make Greek accepted to recruit Catalan Crossbowmen from them. Makes sense, of course.

It was the "automatically generated" shit they were trying to edit, which is supposed to scoop stuff directly from the game files to fill in the wiki, it fucked up, so some kind people fixed it FOR FREE and got banned for it.
No wonder no one uses that shithole wiki.

Sadly this leaves us in the position where if you want to know something you either:
1. Just know it.
2. Crawl through dozens of different discords and hope one of the troons there actually plays the game instead of just uses it to groom people.
3. Go fuck yourself and play a better game.
>>
>>2491345
oh, seriously? I saw one of those sections on the levies page trying to figure this out and wondered what the point was because it's been a year and it's not auto-generating shit.
That's a shame.
>>
>>2491345
WOuldn't the same also apply to CK3 and EU4 though?
Granted CK3 is pretty retardproof so you don't really need a wiki to learn 99% of what that game has to offer. I never found the EU4 wiki particularly helpful either, honestly reading reddit sperg posts about game mechanics was always more helpful unironically.
Regardless, I understand your frustration. I just wish I could find it in me to enjoy EU4, but honestly it's just not for me. CK3 I have put too much time into it to realize its still a unbalanced blobfest with shockingly little depth to it. Even in the role playing elements, which is what everyone in /ckg/ claims the simulation and strategy died for.
I guess there's Vicky 3 though, I own it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. People say its improved quite a lot since it's terrible launch. For what it's worth, I do enjoy the slower paced econ focuses gameplay of EU5, so I probably should give Vic a chance at some point.

I dislike how much of an ahistorical sandbox Victoria 3 is.
In (modded) Victoria 2 the game follows a nice little narrative, where the variables are recognizable and distinct. Oh cool, Russia won the Crimean war and made the Balkans into puppets. Wow, the CSA won the civil war, don't see that too often. Austria is getting KuK'd hard by Germany and Italy!
In Victoria 3 there is no railroading into events, Africa doesn't get colonized properly, Japan doesn't take Korea, the Balkans will never be vied over by Russia and Austria, it's just a complete blank slate sandbox. What I will say though is that the economic game is genuinely far more compelling than Victoria 2. Even if it is just line go up.

I don't know if I'm just a jaded oldfag or I just happened to get into grand strategy at the perfect time. Everything before I did seems like outdated sandbox trash (blobhemia in eu3), everything after I did (HoI4, Victoria 3, CK3) seems like arcade nonsense for zoomers wanting a dopamine fix through pressing green buttons, but when I started playing GSG (Victoria 2, HoI3, CK2) everything seemed right, games simulated history well and had complex mechanics (for the time) which was as good as CPUs back then could produce. There were no skill trees, focus trees, filling point bars, or retarded political shitflinging.
Community was better, mods were better, development was better, experience was better.

I have to go now, it's time for my back pain medication.

To salvage this wreck of a game set minimum revolting pops limits per province (based on size, soldiers and total pop formula) so 10 pops can flip out revolt start ahistorical world wars

Dont cap control increasing buildings, set an estate satisfaction penalty to control maxxing. Governors feel very gamey like civ vi. Max control Paris and St Petersburg historically were revolt magnets, make it so by implementing local satisfaction penalties for high control

Revolts are by far the worse experience in this game, 2 angry chinamen in Samara in 1400 would not cause world war, neither would 10 protestants you expelled drag you into an independence war vs your euro neighbor. Restore the option to ignore a call to arms like current day europeans do to trump

The usual economy and trade issues can be fixed by paradoxtards like in victoria, war and revolts however seem too much for them to handle
>>
>>2491371
Victoria 3 needs to be ahistorical because the devs are hardcore commies and they need for things to be fantastical for marxism to work.
Simple as.
>>
>>2491371
I actually don’t mind the focus on keeping things away from historical railroading (there NEEDS to be a civil war in 1860 or a world war in 1914). So as events/situations lead to some kind of conflict or event taking at some point, even if it is out of order or with differing parties.
>line go up
To be fair, that’s been the modus operandi for economic theory in the past 100 years or so, especially after the Us dropped the gold standard and ESPECIALLY after the 2008 recession. Unless you mean to say that they fail to simulate downturns/crashes/depressions in which case it’s a pretty major flaw in the Econ simulation.
Also, idk about you, but CK2 wasn’t this masterpiece of grand strategy as lot of people look back on it as. I know CK3 blows in a lot of ways, but just like with EU5, it gets tiring people looking back on the previous title with rose tinted glasses. CK2 got extremely ahistorical as well with its unstoppable Umayyad and Byzantine super blobs, and Religious Authority death spiraling for Catholics in the earlier start dates. It had certain triggers for historical stuff, but it wasn’t guaranteed to trigger, let along succeed (i.e rise of the fatimids).

When I say "railroading" I more mean "structural mechanisms to ensure plausible outcomes".
For example, an event firing on 1914.7.28 that triggers war between all the central powers and the entente is no bueno, but the inbuilt crisis and great war system that puts great powers in a diplomatic conflict against each other over some foolish thing in the balkans that can then become a great war if two or more great powers join on both sides is good "railroading", if you even want to term it that.
Compared to Victoria 3 where great wars simply don't exist, it's pure sandbox, there is no railroading either hard or soft, that's bad game design and completely fails at the "strategy" aspect that GSG are supposed to be about.
>Also, idk about you, but CK2 wasn’t this masterpiece of grand strategy as lot of people look back on it as.
No, I'm referring to the thematics more than anything. See pic related for an example of what I mean. Sure, it wasn't peak fiction or anything, but you could immerse yourself in the world. It didn't have stupid fucking fart events and skill trees that took you out of the experience. There was no "whoops, you haven't unlocked the 'know thyself' advance so you don't get weird ghost powers letting you know exactly when you're going to die!"

Also, as for ahistorical shit, I only ever played from 1066 or later, with absurd and magical shit events turned off, so the game was always fairly historical for me.

Anyone (or any great power in europe, I forgot) can intervene in italian wars by clicking a button in situation tab
Sometimes it leads to you being gangbanged by everyone in europe, rarely to goated moments
>>
>>2491713
Imo, the ideal and default setting for a historical strategy game should be that, without player intervention, history unfolds exactly like real life. The only aberrations should be from the player’s actions and the downstream effects of them.
>>
>>2491984
I sort of agree, but equally with hard railroading like that the AI can't adapt to the players changes.
Say for example you're playing Russia, you BTFO the Ottomans in the oriental crisis, that gets Britain and France mad at you. Then you annex Galicia-Lodmeria, that gets Austria and by extension Germany mad at you.
So in this timeline it makes no sense for WW1 to happen as it did, so the event that fires it in 1914.7.28 would then be immersion breaking, despite being historical.

I really think they cooked with the crisis and great war system in V2, it seems to work a lot more flawlessly and realistically than diplomatic plays in V3.

ah yes, the wonderful world of memegame2 “simulation” where pops don’t need roofs, streets, or sewers, because apparently every italian peasant is a self-sustaining hologram who can live in the Sahara without drinking water, and their only concern in life is whether they still have access to luxury toothpicks. Farmers don’t even farm they’re just wheat-shaped fountains, producing the same trickle of grain every single day, year-round, like some kind of eternal bread sprinkler, and every kernel vanishes into the great planetary food depot. Railroads spring from the ground fully formed like mushrooms, never breaking down, never needing engineers, fuel, or repairs, just click "build railroad" and congratulations you’ve just created an everlasting ghost train network that will boost the productivity of the work-from-home factory workers without burning a single lump of coal. You can even run a steel industry in an inland state far from coal and iron mining province because the Sky Vending Machine™ can simply just beam the inputs straight to the factory doorstep. And then there’s the military where armies don’t need horses, fodder, or logistics trains, just 0.15 worth of small arms and 0.10 canned food and voilà, instant Napoleonic Lego Brigade ready to fight through Siberian winters indefinitely as long as the global fridge doesn’t run out of sardines and the HQ doesn't stop teleporting reinforcements to the Front lines through Quantum Entanglement

in conclusion, memegame2 is less a 19th-century simulator and more a steampunk themepark where pops are quantum homunculi who require no shelter or sanitation, railways are perpetual-motion hyperspace conduits immune to entropy, grain fields behave like hydrogen fusion reactors, producing caloric output in perfect disregard for planetary axial tilt or seasonal variation, all glued together by the Cosmic Vending Machine™ that hurls all goods from the Sky to the consumers below without thermodynamic loss

"pops" in memegame2 are not even real. they do not drink fresh water, they do not require temperature, they don't need shelters, they never even commute to work, they simply teleport from their metaphysical home-slot to their metaphysical factory-slot through astral projection. they don't own homes, because housing doesn’t exist. there are no buildings, no slums, no overcrowding, no sanitation crises, hell there isn't even any difference between rural and urban life because neither actually exists. everyone simply lives inside a single magic square called "province" and that square produces grain EXACTLY the same amount of food in winter as in summer, at night, during droughts, at the South Pole, and probably on the moon.
farmers don’t till fields, miners don’t swing pickaxes, lumberjacks don't cut trees, they just stand there while the planet coughs up wheat, coal, iron and timber at a perfectly consistent rate per tick. there are no seasons, no droughts, no bad harvests, no holidays, no winter freezes, just an eternal conveyor belt of resources spewing out of the earth as if the entire world's soil is connected to a nuclear reactor.
they don't age, they never retire, a pop of 45,000 people is basically just one collective blob with a single opinion and one shared wallet. and they also don’t have families, they just spawn fully grown adult males whenever a single magical float value labeled "Birthrate" flips into the positive (lmao)
their religion and culture? also fake cosmetic effects. they don't determine institutions, taboos or intelligence and social disparities
and finally migration? also comedy. 10,000 Hungarians can teleport to Argentina without buying a single ticket, drinking a drop of water or packing a coat and yet they don’t arrive poor, sick or isolated, no, they just pop into existence already employed, already housed (in the void), already speaking the local language and instantly integrated like plug-an- play USB humans

GSGs are simultaneous turn based games, fool. They operate in discrete turns of 1 hour or 1 day and all players’ movements and actions are executed simultaneously with equal priority.

>have to actually learn to build my nation up without cheesing it with an early Promote Urbanization
How is that cheesing it? I feel that the issue has way more chance of appearing if you don't have urban locations which I think is fine, it is not guaranteed to appear. Only way I can imagine you can cheese it if it was possible to re-roll the parliamentary issues, which is not possible.

The problem for me is the early game for REALLY poor nations. Burgher parliamentary issues only appear in Estate Parliament. If you start with Council and don't have a single town to get more Burghers, you'll have to rely on Tax Base while the Nobles are strong and paying very little tax.

I feel like I have to do a land acknowledgement to EU4 players whenever I discuss EU5.
I started playing Paradox games back when they were good (HoI3, Victoria 2, CK2, EU3), then there came a wave of dogshit terrible zoomer dopamine blobber games (HoI4, Victoria 3, CK3, EU4). Aimed at appealing to the lowest common denominators, the dregs of humanity who would simply eat their mindless repetitive slop and then buy more DLC for it.
Now EU5 takes the games back to how they used to be, mechanically complex with pops, a UI that doesn't look like something from a mobile game, and something to actually do in the game other than blob, and the new wave of casuals from the inbetween times are mad as hell about it. They're used to mass appeal slop, and so are impotently seething about player numbers. They can't appreciate things like pops or trade routes or microing production efficiency because they never had to do that before, they only know map painting. Me trying to understand them is like trying to understand an animal's thoughts, but then the very question itself is wrong. Animals are incapable of thought, and the EU4 players are the same. They do their cheevos, they follow their content creators, the very idea of actually coming up with a fun playthrough themselves inspired by their love of history or the mechanics of the game is alien to them. They are less than animals, they are like insects, following only base instincts, in the same way ants forage for food these "people" do their Ulm WCs, get their cheevos, and then they go back to being completely brainless vapid automatons with no thought in their head. They have no life, they do not live, their bodies keep them alive but they lack the capacity for life too, they're just organs and flesh. I would pity them if they in their ignorance didn't malign me for being above them, instead thus I am filled with a rage and hatred against them for their malevolence towards those of us imbued with souls.

Imperator was engoodened through precisely the things that make EU5 good. EU5 is actually slowly reverting to what Imperator was at release now, with the addition of mana.
Imperator was a story of a game that was released with mana and thus bad, but became good through having the mana reduced.
EU5 is a story of a game that was released without mana and thus good, but is becoming bad through having the mana increased.

Vicky 2 singleplayer is extremely easy because the AI is braindead, but also the vanilla economy is broken and lots of shit like steel will just never be profitable. In vanilla vic2 and most mods value is created by RGOs and then siphoned away from the peasantry by tax to feed into industrial subsidies so your heavily unprofitable factories don't go bankrupt and can actually meet military and pop demands. It took 15 years of tinkering for multiplayer autists to actually balance the economy so that it kinda works.

Money in eu5 is actually even more powerful than in eu4 because in eu4 you eventually run out of buildings to make while in eu5 the exponential growth never ends.

For whatever reason they set colonial charter goals up to not be available if anybody else owns a location in the same province (even own subjects) lol

Delete this:

not = {

controller != scope:owner

under is_available in expand_subject and form colonial_nation. Personally I set the ai up to always release a new colonial nation and then colonial nations will merge among themselves under certain conditions.

>>
>The new part this time was the looking. Reading a profiler recording by hand is slow and error-prone. There are thousands of named scopes, they nest inside each other, and a recording of a few months contains millions of individual timings. Over the summer we built a tool that lets Claude, the AI assistant we use for coding, read these files directly. You drop in a recording and ask a plain question: which job got slower since the last recording, or where does the AI's hourly update actually spend its time. It reads the recording, reads the source code for the job in question, and answers with numbers and an explanation of what the code is doing.
>That combination of the recording and the code turned out to matter a great deal. A profiler can tell you that a particular cache refresh costs 800 milliseconds over three months. It cannot tell you that the refresh has a check meant to skip it when nothing changed, and that the check is being bypassed. Finding that requires reading the code with the numbers next to it. We found several of those.

I wanted to like the new beta patch but I don't. Political power is a mistake of a system and the loss of hour ticks isn't worth the game going faster. I felt like the game was getting better each patch until now. It was actually a 6/10 and I wanted the beta to push it to a 6.5/10. Maybe if they stopped coding the game with Claude they could optimize it without removing systems. But that would take talented and passionate individuals. I definitely don't see any passion looking at the AI generated art this game is filled with.

>>2501094
They have already admitted to using Claude for coding. After denying they use AI at all of course. If they're using AI for code they're surely using it for everything even art. All of the art in this game has that uncanny feeling of made by an AI and then cleaned up by a person. It looks kind of almost made by a person but not quite. Look at Mr. Coverman himself from OP. His hands don't look quite right. His grey pants look like they're his skin. His face is generic as hell. The people in the background look like clay golems too.

There was no reason for EU5 to have hourly ticks at all, other than “HOI4 has them”, and they represent a level of coordination and information that is deeply inappropriate for the game, which occurs in an era with horse-borne messengers as opposed to telegrams and radios.
Similarly, there’s no reason for many of EU5’s economic features other than “Victoria 3 has them”, despite being fundamentally inappropriate to apply industrial simulation elements to the 1300s.
Paradox’s issues are deep and spiritual. They’ve unironically lost the Mandate of Heaven, and are flailing about seemingly randomly because they no longer have a core vision of what it is they’re about, and why. They go beyond just Johan, or vibecoding, which is a superficial symptom, not a root cause.

You’re probably right. It’s just an odd phenomenon. Extreme aversion to thinking about things or engaging with ideas, pretending anyone with even mild criticism is an “EU4babby” and LARPing like an oldfag, when I know damn well they’re a zoomer who started the series, at the absolute earliest, with EU3.
You see a similar phenomenon over in RPGland with “heh, I’m a REAL fallout fan, I started the series with New Vegas, not like you secondaries”
The combination of projection and irony poisoning makes sincere discussion impossible, which is a bummer.

I'm kind of here
I'd rather read books or write my own than play a Paradox game at this point
the games just aren't very fun to be frank
I don't feel like the things I'm doing are making a material difference, I'm doing the obvious things and waiting as my core gameplay loop and that is not very fun
There's no flavor, no events I can remember to keep me occupied or busy (same as CKIII)

I really don't like Control
It's like EUIV estates, just adding shit to the game that isn't fun to micromanage and pay attention to constantly. Even in 1440 France building improvements in Aquitane definitely increased tax revenue a ton in real life it doesn't make sense it doesn't in a video game which is supposed to be easier than real life
Idk who they're catering to
Overseas penalty being added to EUIV after release reminds me of Control
Unavoidable and very unfun, gives you backwards incentives (why colonize anymore if you can't reap the benefits? Why develop your nation if control is so low you won't gain anything from it?)

Victoria 2 is basically just Victoria 1 with automation. I don't know why you guys always try to argue about a 17 year old game not being good to make the new games look better. We like it because it knew what to simulate and where to cut out bloat. Paradox has been really struggling to do this for a decade now and EU5 is a great example. All their games start out barebones early access tier and continually stuffed with crap and never with fun.

>>
>>2502293
>I really don't like Control
The issue I had with EU5 is almost everything they're doing is geared towards slowing down the player in early game like control and ring mana (it doesn't work going by reddit the new meta after ring mana is to quickly convert to Islam hand out privileges and convert back) rather than the main problem with the game that everyone bored after the first 100 years and starts a new campaign
>>
>>2502330
>no, their artists just suck
The early art had nonsese geometric figures and random stuff in there. I dont have the pics anymore but it's 100% AI.
>>
Control and proximity are good mechanics that are poorly implemented
Their existence also means cores should be reworked into claims and not provide anything other than a CB
Also court wizard assimilation and conversion spells should be heavily restricted (forcing assimilation should be a late game mechanic), and cause high amounts of unrest in the population.
Early game demographic changes should be based on forced expulsions and encouraging migration.

>>2502336
yeah they have the same "slow the player down" design philosophy in CKIII with their arbitrary time gates on shit like elective succession and other legal crap
not even making you tech it up or discover it or research it, just a hard locked time gate, it's so fucking gay lmao
It does the opposite, as now I play the game way less and have to play on higher speeds and be less connected to my characters as I literally spend less real life time with them before they die
Third on top of all this is less events of any meaning, I feel like literally nothing happens of interest. I can ignore basically any event, or just hover the options and do them and really has no effect.
In past games I at least read the events and considered my clicks but this is just speed through everything don't bother reading it's the same 4 events over and over like I'm playing a spreadsheet
It's all faggot grinding. The adventurer mode in CKIII is fun, but the optimal gameplay loop is as a criminal where you stack for that, travel for that, keep kidnapping valuable people to sack congenitals and cash and talent, etc.

>>2503337
this too also gay

I hate how the focus is put on the often fruitless pursuit of making the AI "more competent". The AI can already play with you to a good degree and an argument could be made that some level of stupidity is good for the narrative of the game as it is about the spirit of a nation and some moments of exceptionalism are nice. The actual focus needs to be much more on ensuring the AI actually does shit beyond late medieval politics. The game has so many good systems and a lot of decent content that could make the later eras great. But the AI never tries to do stuff like form global empires, exploit opportunities, and in general form logical results. The fact that they never arrive in Asia and the American colonies remain mostly a population sink leads to everything past the 15th century becoming increasingly lame and a lot of the content not even feeling meaningful. A world where Europe never becomes universal should be extremely rare in a game like this if not locked behind an ahistorical toggle. So much fun could be brought to the game by just putting in the weights and a bit of railroading to ensure you can see stuff like trade posts, the Spanish Philippines, European pressure on China, strategic wars over colonies, etc. I hate that we are going to have to wait until next year at the earliest to potentially see them attempt to fix this although I'm betting most of the focus is going to be on adding stupid conquistador events or something. I don't know why the actual focus of the period is almost never tended to, even mods rarely touch it. It isn't like the investment wouldn't be worth it as any statistic showing most games ending a century or two in would change if they made the later parts mean something.
>>
>>2503687
Everyone says they want AI with teeth until they actually get it. Like that patch they finally did turn up the heat and it basically made Holland unplayable because the entire game would be England and France running a train on you. Then they calmed it down to current levels.

As far as historical plausibility goes, I don't know if it's naïvety or retardation that they believe you can get realistic outcomes through mechanics alone. It's never been the case and never will be the case, you have to railroad the AI into doing shit. They're starting to accept this with stuff like forcing Muscovy to blob, rise of the Turks, giving China CBs to reunify, and now pushing for the Iberian wedding in 1.4, but it's not enough. The entire map basically needs to be coached what to do in this way.
Sandbox is only fun when the sandbox has defined borders keeping the changeable element in, otherwise you're just sitting in a pile of sand.
>>
>>2503693
It feels like most who push for sandbox just don't like railroading because they imagine poorly designed railroading that doesn't adapt to multiple situations and outcomes and forces something out of nowhere. But the current iterations in EU5 show it doesn't have to be that way. Most people who play these games want to play through all of the history. I'm sure if you looked into it, a shocking amount of players would probably be okay with runs that mostly end up historically. If the game was going to be completely sandbox, it would be designed to allow things to happen completely differently like an industrial revolution that could start centuries earlier or later and a general focus of letting the game's narrative follow systems that mirror our world but are able to completely diverge. But that isn't what nearly anyone would want and the game isn't designed in that way. Just like how AI that can't actually form an overseas alternative to the silkroad denies a lot of content surrounding the struggles and responses such a thing brought, AI that is just sandboxed denies most of what the player imagines doing in the later game. This leaves you, for instance, imagining building a stable maritime empire to contest Chinese trade with a rival, only to find you have Asia all to yourself and your navy just means you can blockade the entirety of Europe. Maybe a sandbox could really be pushed to have these situations emerge. But what would be the point of having the Flemish trade with an isolated Japan or have Ulm form an army with a state instead of just having it go most of the time to the historical nations at that point. You can always add options for players that would want something different like what HoI4 does. It feels like exhausting to see yet another glup shitto form an eternal medieval kingdom while I know full well every country other than mine will stagnate at some point with no drive for more. It is like East Asia simulator.
>>
I have literally never seen the Golden Horde collapse. I keep seeing screenshots of people whose Golden Horde collapsed, but mine never has. It's just constant "Jochid Rival Warlord"s that quickly resolve back into being the Golden Horde over and over again.
>>
>>2503718
I see it collapse after it has gone through multiple catastrophic civil wars and Ukraine has gotten big and large taking land from it. Then nothing comes of the scattered shit and neither Muscovy nor Poland ever try to attack Kyev no matter how weak it gets and the region in general remains a strange hugbox despite not always having the alliances to explain it.
>>
>>2503711
I don't know realistically how you'd railroad the European drive to trade with India though. colonization of the Americas works because it's all just uncolonized land, in any case it isn't (Mexico) it breaks and you have Aztecs surviving until the 19th century. I don't think the AI is capable of understanding logistics/naval range/attrition to pull it off, even if they were able to understand controlling spices was a good thing for them.
Short of just event giving England/Britain Bengal I don't see it happening.

This, I remember being pushed into playing Paradox games precisely because I started wanting to recreate history in Civ and was disappointed that it was too limited to do that, being more of a nationalism themed board game. I can imagine many have a similar story. You don't play a game that boasts the entire Earth as a map and a precise starting historical situation alongside the main content being events based off of history just to watch random shitholes splinter the world and keep it in a permanent medieval status quo.

>Give European countries an incentive to build trade posts along the coasts they explore except for Spain which didn't do that (I'm honestly not quite sure how colonial/trade/diplomatic range works and if it would prevent but the feature should be removed regardless as it doesn't do much nor is it historical)
>Have them prefer to route trade through paths they control and also be more aggressive towards those who threaten trade if they make a lot of money off of it
>Make ships more realistic with being able to be stocked with years' worth of food and act as floating battle platforms to allow them to project power overseas and threaten coastal shitholes (possibly even allow marines to emerge from ships taking some of the sailors out for any on land skirmishing but ships should also be able to effectively capture coastal locations)
>This also would give more stuff to give incentive to actually desire to quickly upgrade ships
>Add a few more diplomatic options, I'm really not sure why begging/paying others to join wars isn't already in the game when intervention is for instance
>The trade seeking would naturally create friction which would cause fighting which would make European powers eventually demand more concessions until they get landed and can start stationing garrisons that can fight the unevolved hordes
>Then a bunch of flavor content could be made around this
>Minor nations like those in Italy wouldn't join in most of the time simply due to not having the navies to do this
>Game could also benefit from a sort of trade logistics system beyond the sea tile control already present so not being able to defend your trade would mean you are at the mercy of more powerful nations and also could lead to more fun war tactics
I might have this added on to a mod I'm making with AI to try to see if I can make the AI reach Asia. It actually kind of reminds me of some of the stuff it suggested that I didn't think much of at the time.

A big problem is the Indians are never fragmented enough to do anything to/with. EU4 had the same problem. In real life when the Portuguese arrived in India they found a crumbling wreck of a kingdom (Calicut) with very little centralized authority. This meant when the Portuguese easily BTFO the Calicut fleet all the nominal tributaries of Calicut started tearing the state apart. Portugal allied with these, notably Cochin, and that's how they got their first trading posts in India. Something that can't be replicated in the game.

In the game when Portugal arrives in India the entire landmass is ruled by Vijayanagar, you can't get your fleet to India due to naval range, and even if you could India has the same naval tech as Portugal, even with historical institution spawn on.

India needs to be full of societies of pops that will start burning shit whenever their overlords lose izzat. Once Europeans get a foothold it should start an international organization or whatever that incentivizes any future strong Indian country into letting Europeans stay for trade reasons. Finally, if Europeans get cocky and screw up, there should be a Brahmin toe sucking option that lets them keep their trade posts at the cost of prestige and legitimacy (like the British did historically on occasion). It basically would create a system where European AI can sit around and occasionally try things.

You say this and I unironically believe part of the problem is that every tag is made fair to a degree to ensure they are playable (except for the Pacific Islanders). I was just doing an observer run to test if the first iteration of a mod changed anything about Portuguese colonial behavior. After wasting 2-3 hours to have my laptop chug along to the 1460s, Castile has colonized the Azores and they have otherwise just left the Muslims in Iberia after taking only one province from Granada. Then Morroco leads a war and they get raped so hard that they cede a bunch of locations to Granada, I ragequit. Part of this is the AI being an overly cautious faggot but it also is in part that wealth means next to nothing outside of unit and troop spam and a sandy shithole can easily just move huge armies over the sea and occupy 60% of the Iberian peninsula. Then, in this should be existential conflict, the AI will eagerly sign a peace deal even when it seemed to be making a comeback. The game both needs to better represent the disparity between regions and the pure racial hatred that would mean the Christian Iberians wouldn't diplomatically sign a civilized deal that handed over a large chunk of land to Muslims that they repeatedly opened gates of Toledo to even have occupy as much as they did. I don't know why cultural and religious relations aren't factored into AI behavior, they don't really seem meaningful at the moment. I also don't know why they'll let stuff get really bad and then waste a bunch of money to attempt a comeback only to sign a bad deal halfway through.

If they did this then they'd also need to make cultures not such a monumental thing centuries before nationalism becomes a thing. You should only really face much penalty before the age of revolutions if you are either culturally super different (like Muslims ruling Christians) or repeatedly fuck over their lands and lives. It would also make the age of revolutions more significant if you suddenly had to deal with that much more revolutions, it'd feel like you entered something modern. Saying this makes me think that they should also be more open to letting the game change more each era as it'd narratively work well.

imo it should just be interesting. You can change things but they should be interesting.
Hundred Years War? England winning it can be interesting.
Reformation? Sure, change which countries do it, that can be interesting.
The Ottomans never expanding out of Anatolia? That's boring. Places on the map ideally shouldn't be stagnant and boring the entire game, but they also shouldn't be retarded clusterfucks of map vomit or nonsensical borders. There's a balance. There's already mods that help with this like the Timur mod.
>>
>>2504132
but maybe you could change things up. Have some dynamism. Maybe the growing power out of that region isn't the Ottomans but a reviving Byzantium, or Serbia after a majorly successful Stefan Dusan.
They give the guy crazy stats and his own modifier about how ambitious he is and then he doesn't do jack shit except maybe one war to take most of his historical territory which I guess might be good enough
>>
>>2504132
>Reformation? Sure, change which countries do it, that can be interesting.
It just doesn't make sense to me for Iberia to have a strong reformation movement.
Catholicism was more linked to their identity than anything else, they'd just spent literal centuries reconquistaing their land from the Muslims, it doesn't make sense for them to say "you know the entire basis of our belief is wrong actually.", which is why they didn't entertain the reformation in real life.
>>
>>2504135
That's fair. Could make it much harder for Spain unless it's a player. But France or Austria for example among others
>>
Are there not game settings that explicitly let you choose between strictly historical/weighted/dynamic/random rules for everything? Do these just not actually do anything? I like a mix of historical congruity but with plausible alternative history playing out and I make the settings reflect that and it works well enough for me. I don’t see the same issues most people report.
>>
>>2504138
France definitely, but with Austria again you run into the problem that they derived their entire legitimacy from the Catholic church as HRE.
Story of the Reformation was really the story of who stood to benefit from disavowing Catholicism vs who didn't. This was never clearer than in the case of Anglicanism, where Henry VIII was fully in agreement with the church politically and personally until the second it didn't serve him, at which point he instantly stopped following it.
There's also the factor of personal autonomy of the people doing it. For example, many of the places and communities that embraced the reformation had much greater rights and wealth/literacy than those that did not. Backwards feudal shitholes were much less likely to have any exposure to the reformation than Western merchant based economies.
>>
>>2504142
I mean, I've already seen Bohemia give up the title of emperor to convert to Hussitism and fight half the empire, and a large percent of Austria historically became protestant.
>>
>>2504145
And for those reasons the Holy Roman Emperor should be prohibited from converting, in my opinion.
In the event all their pops convert to a heretical religion they should have to deal with that through rebellion. They shouldn't willingly change religions themselves.
