What the OP says. I absolutely love the Aegean Region, but I feel like in most games/mods, Greece is either already OP (Byzantium) or too weak to really do much (Victoria 2).
What are some good games or mods that let me unify the Greeks without it being trivial or impossible?

Victoria 2's alt history mod "Throne of Lorraine" has Greece mostly taken over by the Ottomans and Venetians, but Athens remains sovereign and is actually fairly well placed to reclaim Greece (Athens starts out with really good literacy and possibly other buffs, and the Venice AI struggles with moving troops around, so it's not too hard to recover the Venetian parts of Greece and then use the inertia of your tech advantage, as well as increased numbers, to reclaim the rest of Greece from the Ottomans, or if they've declined enough, to get yourself to GP status and then diplomatically coerce them into giving you your clay). Additionally, there's a lot higher Greek population in western Anatolia in that mod so it's much easier to build Greece up once you've liberated it.

for antiquity, Hegemony Gold (philip campaign is kino), and Field of Glory Empires (diadochi era, or DLC lets you play early classical period start)

I also recommend this.

Gates of the Bosphorus for Vicky 3 is really rewarding and not too OP

RIR mod for Rome: Total War Remastered. It has the most extensive depiction of the Greek world in a strategy game pretty much ever.

I enjoy playing as Despotate of Epirus in Crusaders KIngs 2 with the recent post-Fourth Crusade date. Plenty of times I've had war wages against me but I've felt like a weakling doomed to fall. I'm using HIP mod btw.

imperium Universalis was alright. but I guess at this point modded imperator mogs it?

Yeah and despite owning that much territory, you still only have like 2 million Greek POPs by the endgame and Athens only has a population of like 300,000 POPs. And because Greece is divided into so many small provinces, while already having low population, you will barely have any population growth throughout the game.

There's Slitherine's Spartan. I remember it being decent. If you know 2002 Legion, it's basically a sequel to that game. Especial cool is that there is this big map of Greek region and you can play as whatever nation and each has it own victory objective (for example Rodos has to build Colossus, although I think most nations have more basic "own X towns"). It's a bit of Total War kind of game where build up cities and move armies on the global map and fight in battles in a separate battle mode. Although one thing you might get used to is how you don't control your troops in battle. You set formations and movement of your troops in the planing stage but after the battle start you can only play horn for retreat or boost morale once per battle. It suppose to imitate how in real life ancient general didn't have much ability to pass orders in the middle of battle.
There's also a stand-alone expansion to the game, Gates of Troy. It seems to mostly add new scenarios and couple new units, but if you're going for Spartan, it might be better to go with this expansion instead since they're treated as separated things. Especial since you still get the big Greece map but with added option to play as Romans or Persians.

https://wc3maps.com/map/437788/Greece_v1.8r
this is the ultimate greece experience
12 players, historical factions, naval warfare
its one of the goat maps, sadly it never got turned into its own game unlike lesser maps
>>

yeah great map, probably the best of the diplomacy style maps. maybe we even played together back in the day. what other maps were you into? I think I played pretty much all of the "strategy" style maps, especially the spawn-based ones.
>Version 1.8r released Jun 06, 2026
holy someone's still updating and presumably playing this?
>>
>>2450453
according to the site it got hosted 76 in 2026 so its basically dead
that specific version even only got hosted 3 times
so yea some people cordinate and host games over discord but even they are mostly ghost towns and deserted
DAOW, LTA, LTF, the game of thrones ap, so many lotr maps and esspecially i liked helms deep
they barely get hosted
sometimes a new map gets dropped like Glory of the Horde and develops a following. it was such a fun concept, of 4v4v4 with a bunch 1v1 in it. but its also is dead noawadays...
>>
>>2450464
also sad that 24 player support was only added right before reforged
there is like one map, war in the plaguelands, that use its and its such a chaotic shitfest

>Glory of the Horde
kino map, also very rare example of a really interesting warcraft alt history setting. the map maker Panther Anthro did some other good maps too, Conflict for Sereg'Dor was an OC fantasy setting that also had multi-faction conflict that was pretty fun.
>>2450466
yeah it's really depressing how badly the Reforged release fucked the entire custom map scene. the game could have kept sustaining niche communities if absolutely nothing was done besides 24 player support and the battle.net maintenance updates, but nublizz had to ruin it all.
War in the Plaguelands 24 player does sound completely bananas, even the 12 player WiP map felt very crowded.

i liked the cold war scenario that had a bunch of pop up historical event messages. one of them was a beatles quote about how they more popular than jesus. played it back around 2007
>>
>>2450494
damn I don't remember any historical cold war maps specifically, sounds fun. I do remember Alternate Future which had the Soviet Union and US, along with a bunch of regional bloc factions like the African Union and Latin American union and shit. I remember in later versions you could colonize the moon, though I think my games would always end way before that due to laggers and ragequitters.

yes, Invictus is amazing

Imperiums: Greek Wars is a pretty fun 4x/gsg hybrid. Has a bunch of campaigns, but the main one is focused on the rise of Macedon. There are loads of city states you can play as though.
