This game was blast few times i played it. story and setting was nice mix of dune, foundation, hyperion cantos, but after several completions of all 6 of chapters, i felt that gameplay wise, games felt very lacking? yes, has multiple ships that map to different factions and gameplay, variety still felt very shallow compared to FTL, Void War and other games in genre. So, while story was interesting, game as a whole feels like wasted potential.
It's just a worse FTL that adds lots of tedious text to try and make up for the lack of quality, despite the type of game not being suitable to it.
I played a little on my phone. Real-time RPS combat on a hex board just isn't it, what were they thinking?
compared to FTL and Void War, gameplay feels very shallow. weapon selection is kinda bare bones and majority of the weapons are there just to support squadrons, so you can't really play as guns focused ship. squadron selection is nice, but it feels like main part of gameplay focus. ship systems and different battleships are again, shallow at best. while ships give certain bonuses and maluses, it doesn't majorly change how you will play on 3/3 cluster as by that point, you'll be maxed out anyway. what i really liked in FTL and Void war, that give around 3 or 4 ship types per faction. in Crying suns, you get 1 ship per faction and 2-3 officers per faction, that, while cool as they give extra skill compared to generic officers feels like undercooked addon, as you use 1 officer and that officer is on "cooldown" for 5 next runs. it feels like it roguelite part added as afterthought after they figured out what kind of story they will tell, instead like FTL and Void War where roguelite is major gameplay focus and entire of game systems is built around it.
>>2455137i mean, yes novelty is that its a roguelite that has MAJOR focus on story, but its not enough for game to stay relevant.
>story-rich>roguelite
The atmosphere is good, the pixel art is passable and the soundtrack is neatthe gameplay itself is rather shallow and the story, the selling point of the game, is retarded and nihilist for no good reasona very mixed bag i'll tell you that
>>2454624>while story was interesting, game as a whole feels like wasted potential.Yes that's a good summary
>>2456659yes, I felt that if it had ATLEAST 2 ships per faction, it would help immensely for "roguelite" aspect. game as in, feels barely as roguelite as yes, each run has randomized events, but there are a lot of fixed story events that will happen no matter what, and "unlockable special officers" are cool, having to play 5 runs to use it again feels very disappointing.
>>2454624Could been good, not great, that's FTL already, but good in a different way if the devs actually committed to give it more polish and content instead of jumping ship
>>2458721yeah, I'm still mad that they did not added Telos ships, especially since telos tech and ship model was already fleshed out. and IIRC it was requested multiple times.
after completing every 6 chapters with every ship, i found that gameplay differences between ships was fun, and special officers play into it.>Excelsior (empire+) Class: generalist ship that allows you play anyway you want, you can focus on squadrons, weapons etc. special officers give either faster weapon recharge, stronger squadrons or shielding for ship, playing into "we can focus on any playstyle">Kaos Class (scrapper): swarmer ship with suicide drones, your drones are your weapon. special officer makes patched squadrons (and you can only have patched squadrons) better on start of the match, or quickly getting new drone when one of your suicide drones goes out.>Jericho Class (church): tough ship with focus on ship weapons, but limited capabilities in squadrons, but its irrevalent as squadrons are there to hold the line while you blast enemy ship with guns. special officers either allows you to have better squadron deployment field (working around your weakness in squadron combat) or enhancing status effects for weapons further (as ships tech gives more dps against debuffed units)>Geno Class (Akibara Sung) stealth fighters. hit hard but are fragile. special officer either enhances weapon heat, which with heat damage from ship tech means that enemy systems are usually overheated, or best expedition leader, which helps to work around expedition portion as ship has worst stats for it.>Hammer Class (Kosh Buendia) toughest ship, which focused on maintaining map control due to no friendly fire from weapons, while your drill frigates take care of enemy ship. special officer either allows ships hull to repair itself or attack adjacent enemies, playing into theme that Kosh-Buendia are tough.
>>2463632>Void Class (pirates) ship has rough start, but can be more customized compared to Excelsior, poor fuel mining though, so some of discounted scrap will be used to buy fuel. special officer either protects key systems during battle, or makes squadrons faster. >Kronos Class (Pragmah) plays into using squadrons special abilities to the fullest, special regenerating hull shield also makes chapters 2 and 3 very easy. special officers either make squadrons recharge abilities faster, or shutting down enemies weapon. >Horus Class (phalanx) squadron superiority ship, but poor choice for weapons, making it anti-jericho class. you'll be winning by micro managing squadrons and can forget about weapons, lol. special offers either make lone squadron tougher, or buffing grouped squadrons. I really like how special officers play into ships features and wished there was option of selected all faction specific officers for ship with trade off being that you get less spots for generic officers or something like that. Also wish there was variants, may be at least variant A and Variant B or something. so sad that devs abandoned/finished game as there are heaps and heaps of what they could've done. Also, its kind of annoying that your ships interior is always neon. it would be rad if interior colors changed depending of what ship class you chose.
I remember playing the game and dropping down the difficulty because of how boring the game was, and the story somehow got me interested so I wanted to see what happens
>>2463907while story was cool for a roguelite, it bothered me somewhat that from chapter 3 onwards, everyone seems to be aware that Master Node exists, even it was stated to be biggest kept secret in Imperium.
>>2454624the story and atmosphere were the only thing that got me going after a while and thats a death sentence for these gamesthe dev released a new game recently about battlestar gallactica which I enjoyed much more
>>2465243while i really like how they tried to transpose theme of BSG to scattered hopes, gave has even less variety than Crying Suns, and you need to do at least 12 runs to do secret true ending, while only having 4 type of fleets to chose from. and as per >>2463632>>2463640At least crying suns gives significantly different playstyle focus based on ship you pick. in scattered hopes, while different fleets somewhat encourage you to play differently, they usually end up feeling the same as your vipers do most of heavy lifting anyway. I know game is relatively fresh, so I hope they'll add more content or DLC before abandoning ship like they did with crying suns.
